There is an
island in the North Atlantic

where people have
been looking for

an incredible treasure
for more than 200 years.

So far, they have
found a stone slab

with strange
symbols carved into it,

man-made workings that
date to medieval times,

and a lead cross whose
origin may be connected

to the Knights Templar.

To date, six men have died

trying to solve the mystery.

And according to legend,
one more will have to die

before the treasure
can be found.

Yeah.

A brisk but bright
fall day has begun on Oak Island

for brothers Rick and
Marty Lagina and their team.

And in
the fabled Money Pit area,

they have just broken ground

on a new
seven-foot-diameter steel shaft

in the hopes of finally
solving a 230-year-old mystery.

Our best guess is that
the treasure ended up

200 feet under
that spot right there

- and... - Which kind
of lines up with TB-1.

- Yeah, very much so.
- Yeah. - Yeah.

Over the past two months,

the team has excavated four
identical shafts in this area...

where previous groundwater
testing has revealed

high traces of gold and
silver deep underground.

These include one that
was affectionately dubbed

True Believer or TB-1...

where they unearthed
potential evidence

of the legendary
Chappell Vault...

a seven-foot-high,
concrete-covered box

that was first reported
by Frederick Blair

and his drill operator
William Chappell back in 1897.

Hey. Stop! It's caving.

However, as
TB-1 reached a depth of 160 feet,

the earth beneath and around
the shaft suddenly caved in.

This has led the team to believe

that more than 100 cubic yards
of earth and the possible vault

fell deeper into the
so-called solution channel,

a naturally occurring
void in the bedrock

more than 200 feet underground.

You guys think
we'll make it in time?

I know we're
running out of time.

Yeah, we're in good
shape where we are now.

Now,

after making repairs to
stabilize the Money Pit area,

representatives from ROC
Equipment and SB Canada

are digging The
One Thing, or TOT-1,

less than ten feet
to the south of TB-1.

In the next few days,

they hope to enter
the solution channel

and retrieve the valuables

before the oncoming
winter forces the team

to suspend their search
operations until next spring.

The solution channel
itself is a massive feature.

I mean, plenty big
enough to have accepted

whatever fell out
of the Money Pit.

It's plenty big enough to have
swallowed up any treasure.

So TOT-1 is
designed to dig deeper,

where this treasure
might have fallen to,

and we're very excited about it.

We're running out of time.

This will be the last
can in the Money Pit.

I think everybody is crossing
their fingers and their toes.

large stone foundation

near the shoreline...

a foundation

that archaeologist
Laird Niven believes

may not only be connected

to activity in the
original Money Pit

but might have been
used as a campsite

by numerous
groups prior to 1795.

We're excited about this button

that was found here
on Lot 5. I mean,

- we were just in Malta. We saw some carvings.
- Yeah.

We were investigating
a prison on Gozo.

And in that prison, we saw
carved on the wall a-a symbol

that's similar.

And we're excited about
this potential connection.

Two weeks ago, Alex,

his uncle Rick, and other
members of the team

traveled to Malta in order
to research the theory

that the medieval order
of the Knights Templar

and a related group known
as the Knights of Malta

were connected to
the Oak Island mystery.

There they saw numerous carvings

that match symbols which
have been found over the years

on Oak Island...

including one that nearly
matched the design of a button

recently unearthed
in this feature on Lot 5.

Any troweling that
needs to be done

- or soil that needs to be sifted, we're...
- Yeah. Yeah.

The artifacts,
directly and indirectly,

connect Lot 5 to
the Knights Templar

and the Knights of Malta.

Why?

That's what we're
trying to find out.

that could help prove
just who may be connected

Well, as we close
in on the end of the season,

I see we have a very
good group here. We got...

almost all the main players.

Rick, Marty and their
business partner Craig Tester

are meeting with
members of the team

in the museum regarding
another potentially key location

that may hold answers
to the treasure mystery,

the triangle-shaped swamp.

We've done a
lot of work in the...

in the swamp over the years.

And, you know, how do you
connect this spot to that spot?

What features might be
associated with other features?

And I just wanted to
try to see if there was

any connective tissue.

In recent
years, the Oak Island team

has discovered numerous man-made
structures throughout the swamp

such as a massive
stone-paved feature

that geoscientist
Dr. Ian Spooner

has carbon-dated to
approximately 1200 AD;

the so-called Eye of the Swamp,

which may date to 1680;

and a stone road in
the southeast corner

that may have also been
created in the 17th century.

However, this year, the team

has uncovered
wooden survey stakes

that lined sections of a
mysterious cobblestone pathway

all through the brackish bog

and an empty brick and
slate vault-like feature

in the northern region,

a vault which matched an
image in a 19th century book

that researcher John
Edwards believes

may offer evidence that
both the Knights Templar

and the Knights of Malta

buried priceless religious
artifacts on Oak Island

between the 12th
and 17th centuries.

I had to task Steve
with all the C-14 tests

so we can sit around and have
a comprehensive understanding

of what's been done
in the swamp to date.

Now, surveyor Steve Guptill

has compiled the
scientific test results

from wood and organic
materials in these features

in an effort to help determine
when they were made

and just who may
have created them.

The way I'm gonna start
this, I have lots of printouts.

So I went through all
the C-14, the dendro.

I added as many as I could.

When we look at
things like the cobble path,

we found really definitive
context, like a pile of stones

and a cut stake underneath it.

And so we know

that that cut stake was a survey
stake that was used to make

the structure, and then we
have 13 of those that we dated.

Let's start at the cobble path.

We've got 600
feet of cobble path

with multiple survey stakes.

Dates are 1650,
maybe into the 1700.

Multiple dates, overlapping.

We have the Eye,

which is in the north
end of the swamp.

That also dates 1630 to 1680.

And now the north end of
the swamp, we have the vault.

It goes back to as far as
the late 1600 time period.

Those dates fit
with the Knights of Malta.

We know that they
were here in the 1630s.

- Is that correct?
- Correct.

Wow. Those dates are

very surprising.

That's stunning.

We can connect the
work in the swamp

potentially to the
Knights of Malta.

I think that's
comfortably in-in range.

In the Oak Island Museum,

surveyor Steve Guptill

and geoscientist Dr. Ian Spooner

have just presented
scientific data suggesting

that numerous structures
in the swamp were created

in the 17th century

and may support the theory

that the Knights of Malta buried
sacred treasures on Oak Island.

Maybe the Money Pit

was originally built by
the Knights Templar.

I'm wondering if maybe
in the 1600 to early 1700s,

the Knights of Malta
were finishing up

some of the work that
the Templars had started.

Or following up.

And it's not

out of the range
of possibilities.

- No, it's not. - No.
- So Rick asked me

to do one final thing and
that was to try and figure out

the big boulders that are
out there in the north end

- of the swamp.
- Yeah.

There's even more big
boulders down there.

Four weeks ago, after uncovering

more sections of the
cobblestone pathway

in the northernmost
region of the swamp...

here, here, here, here...

Rick and members
of the team discovered

a possibly man-made
formation of large boulders.

I think you have a seawall.

This is how you'd
close this swamp off.

A feature that
may be related to a timbered wall

that the late treasure hunter
Fred Nolan reportedly uncovered

in the late 1960s

and believed was used
to create the swamp.

It's potentially 14 feet long.

And that's
what your father said.

Roughly four-fourteen feet long.

And, curiously,

while using ground-penetrating
radar in this area,

the team was astonished
to find an anomaly

that matched Fred's description.

Mixed within those
smaller boulders,

we had the survey stakes,

or the support stakes.

We dated some of the stakes.

It dates very consistently...

late 1600, early 1700s.

We did a few scans

north of that seawall that
Steve was talking about.

So if you look up
on the screen...

there's that blue
anomaly that's elongated.

I think it could be a really
interesting potential hit.

It would be nice
if it's Fred's wall.

I think if that is a wall,

it will represent original work.

- It's worth digging.
- Now, that

I can't agree with more.

It's...
always time to dig.

If this wall clearly
had a purpose

and if that purpose was
manipulating the swamp

to protect something,

that would be a
incredible piece of data.

There are things yet to dig
in the north end of the swamp.

Maybe there are more of these
subterranean swamp vaults.

Nobody would like more than me

to dig up something
really significant.

And I always want to dig, so...

We're still
bringing out good grabs.

As the excavation of TOT-1

continues in the
Money Pit area...

So, Steve and I marked our spot

right in the middle
of what we think

may be the wall,
based on the OKM data.

- Okay.
- Rick, Craig,

and other members of the team

prepare to unearth the potential
14-foot-long structure or object

in the northernmost
region of the swamp.

Can you tell how deep it is?

- It's roughly four to five feet.
- Okay.

If it's there,
we're gonna find it.

I have

very simple hopes

for digging at this anomaly.

I want to find the wall.

And I would love nothing better

to find wood in the
ground at this location.

What's that thing, right...

It might be a
plank. Do you see that?

- I'll just take a little bit off right there.
- Yeah.

There's wood.

Wood?

Uncovered where
the team detected

a possible buried structure?

If so, could it be
part of the wall

that Fred Nolan
believed is buried here?

My thought would be

to dig this hole deeper

and see what we find.

as it heads deeper
towards the solution channel

There's a lot of wood
coming up out of the hole.

There's a ton of it, my friend.

We're chewing through the
side of the Chappell Shaft.

In 1931,

Melbourne Chappell,
along with his father William

and treasure hunter
Frederick Blair,

constructed a 157-foot
shaft in the Money Pit

in a bold but
unsuccessful attempt

to retrieve the believed vault

that William and Frederick
had discovered in 1897.

If we have to push it
or chase it to, 215,

we've got all the
caisson material here

we need to do that.

The fact that the team believes

they're digging through
the Chappell Shaft

is an encouraging sign.

But now the burning question is,

once TOT-1 descends
below 200 feet,

will it encounter
the legendary vault?

Upon reaching
a depth of over 140 feet

in the TOT-1 shaft,

the Oak Island team
may have just discovered

an important clue...

- You can see that there's clearly some adze work here.

A wooden dowel
bearing adze markings,

which was a kind of
pre-18th century cutting tool.

Could that mean that this dowel

was part of the
original Money Pit?

And if so, does it suggest

that the team could be on target

to locate the legendary
Chappell Vault

more than 50 feet deeper below?

I see

some round stuff up there, too.

I don't know. You
know, let's have a look.

is just an odd piece of wood.

It feels a lot harder.

Some of the wood
that's coming out

from TOT-1 looks older in
the sense that it's pegged

with a dowel rather than
using metal fasteners.

And that's an older technique.

So that's a good sign.

the Oak Island mystery,

not by any stretch
of the imagination.

We probably have explored,

less than 30% of
the bog in its entirety.

of all the things that
have been found in 30%,

what remains to be
found in the other 70%?

the metal plate, I think.

of Chappell, it has to be.

A large metal plate?

While attempting to
retrieve the treasure in 1931,

Melbourne Chappell
braced the bottom

of the so-called Chappell Shaft

with a four-foot-tall
metal shoe, or shield,

to prevent flooding
and cave-ins.

Now that the team
has reached the bottom

of the 1931 searcher shaft,

and because they
will advance TOT-1

more than 200 feet deep
into the solution channel,

any new materials that
they bring to the surface

could be related to
the original Money Pit.

You dream of that coming
out with a half-broken chest.

Yeah, absolutely.

We know the Money Pit collapsed.

We know it went somewhere.

And in the case of Chappell,

we know they
believed their own story.

They drilled into the famous
so-called Chappell Vault.

it should be somewhere
below the Chappell Shaft.

Maybe we're on the verge
of finding the treasure.

have just made a potentially
important discovery.

You could see
the striations in it.

Look at that. That's
some old iron there.

Yeah, it is.

'Cause we're below
the Chappell Shaft.

Yeah. Exactly.

a really old tool, mate.

I bet that's like an old pickax.

A possible
fragment of a handwrought pickax?

Found at a depth of
over 160 feet in TOT-1?

What a sweet find.

In 2019,

while excavating a shaft

less than five feet
to the northeast

known as RF-1...

It's an old
pickax. A broken pickax.

The Oak Island team

recovered part
of a similar pickax.

That's something, man.

And just two weeks ago,

while visiting Malta...

It's just absolutely incredible.

Where the team was
shown a vast network

of 16th century
underground tunnels

with features that matched
the reported original design

of the Money Pit...

This was found below

145 feet in the ground.

Historian Matthew Balzan

suggested that these
exact kinds of tools

were used by the
Knights of Malta.

This is the beginning.

Yeah, I'll just

Is it possible

have just discovered
another ancient tunneling tool

that may help the team identify

who was behind the
Oak Island mystery?

This came out
of what we're calling

The One Thing.

They are
eager to have him examine

the believed pickax that
was found one day ago

in the TOT-1 spoils.

We have sought to
find irrefutable proof

of men working in
the Money Pit at depth,

and lo and behold,
this item comes out.

The interesting thing about

this artifact is the depth.

It was really deep.

Okay.

Well, it's a fairly,
chunky, piece.

Broken off from some other piece

that extended this way.

A-Also, if you look at
it, you'll see the grains,

and the grains are starting
to fold on the end here.

And when you beat
onto it repeatedly,

they do start to fold
up in a nice pattern-like.

So this was repeatedly
banged onto something.

That something, could you infer

that it was stone
versus metal, or not?

Yes, it was definitely stone.

- Definitely stone.
- Rocks. Hard ground, whatever.

Emma, do you
have a scan on this?

Yeah.

So, this is actually
a cross section

of that iron piece.

So, there was, like, a crack.

Okay.

So, it is a tool.

It could be part of a pickax.

A very heavy, old pickax.

There would have been
something coming out this way,

'cause it broke off.

The only time I see
primitive mining tools

that were this
shape and this size...

was from the 1500s.

- So, it was a tool

It's a digging tool.

In the Oak Island laboratory,

blacksmithing
expert Carmen Legge

has just shared his
assessment that the pickax

recovered from more
than 160 feet deep

in the TOT-1 shaft

could predate the
discovery of the Money Pit

by nearly three centuries.

So, based on the composition,

we got potassium,

we got phosphorous,
sulfur, magnesium.

So, based on the
impurities I'm seeing here,

these are indicative of,
I'd say, between 1500s

and 1700s as well.

Wow. So, it's way
before the story

of the Money Pit.

1790s.

Absolutely.

This represents
something very early,

a tool such as this
having been used in rock.

The dates seem to line
up with the Knights of Malta

having a presence
in Nova Scotia.

It's all possibly
confirming that this location

for the TOT-1 caisson is
an area of original work.

This could be a very
important connection

that needs to be followed up on.

I think we may be

close to treasure.

Has the team
found a tool that was used

in an operation to hide
something of great value

in the original Money Pit?

If so, might it represent
another critical clue

that may connect
the Knights of Malta

and priceless
religious treasures

to the Oak Island mystery?

I mean, my big takeaway
from that is the amount of work,

the amount of
abuse that that took.

So, that really speaks
to how much labor it took

to do whatever it is
they were doing, so...

get into the solution channel

and everything opens
up and it gets a lot easier.

the so-called solution channel,

a massive natural
void in the bedrock

where the team hopes to recover
a vast cache of untold riches.

Right in the center of it
is a big chunk of gypsum.

That is a chunk of wood.

The fact that the wood

could be very old.

probably 185 feet.

There is no evidence
that people were working

at this level long ago. None.

And I believe that
we are in the area

of the original Money Pit.

circle is real.

Basically, what we have here

is a natural cavity down
there... it's effectively a cave.

They're not, like,
a perfect hole,

they don't match that canister.

So we're hung up on that.

So, beneath this
ledge, we're gonna have

some potential collapse material
and some potential treasure.

from reaching the
bottom of the cavity

is going with the airlift.

process will blast high volumes

down the TOT-1 shaft

and into the solution channel

This will force tons of water,

sediment and possible
objects up to the surface.

That's our cave, that's
our repository, potentially.

Start airlifting.

We believe we
can scour the bottom

and whatever's down
there will come to surface.

At this point in time,

we are singularly
focused on one thing:

retrieval of treasure.
