every natural instinct
a man has, 24 hours a day.

First, they force you

that doesn't fit most of the time.

Then they start you to killin',

even when your heart
tells you it's wrong.

Then they make you take orders

from a fellow that you
don't like very much,

and you don't think he knows
any more than you do.

Then you sleep on a hard
bed at night,

and you ride a harder horse
by day.

Now, who likes
that kind of a job?

Nobody.

But a soldier...

he does it anyway.

Why?

Because the one thing that...

makes the bumps and the lumps
a little bit easier for him.

Because of pride.

Pride that goes
with doing his duty,

that goes with making
a sacrifice,

that goes with protecting
his country's honor.

It gives him something that makes
the hair stand up on the back of his neck

when he sees that flag floating
out over the parade ground

'cause he knows he's helping
to keep it there.

By golly, it's a miserable,

nasty kind of a life sometimes,

but if you're a soldier,
you do it.
