Tonight, a nation is on edge

as protests have emerged across the country,

calling for the arrest of the four officers

involved in Mr. Floyd's death,

in which one of them had their knee pressed on his neck

for a total of eight minutes and 46 seconds.

The FBI is now investigating

as protesters nationwide call for the arrest

of the four officers

and the end of police brutality

as the global coronavirus pandemic continues

with no end in sight.

This just in, local organizers

are marching towards the State House,

against a 9:00 PM curfew.

The mayor has urged for calm,

as fears of looting and fringe elements interfered

with local officials' efforts

to restore order in the city.

Standing in solidarity is important,

but the next steps are even more important.

How do we really become allies to our brothers and sisters?

Shortly after George Floyd's unfortunate death,

and I was pretty emotional about it.

And oftentimes when that happens, I pick up a camera

and that's how I released my emotions.

At that point, we were doing a remote learning class

with my advanced students

and I decided to open the project up to them as well

and ask them if they wanted to team up with me.

So we literally have our subjects voice their emotions

and opinions about the current events of this world

by overlaying their audio with their portraits.

You see the person's face and you hear their voice,

and hear the statement that they say.

I think I need love to breathe.

I need justice to breathe.

I need to breathe

to be here for my sisters and my mother.

Mama, I need to breathe.

I need equity to breathe.

I think it's really important for people

to be able to share their voice.

Often, the voice that they do share isn't always heard

so I thought really important to have our voices heard.

Each and every one of us must speak up

in the face of injustice.

I think that we are tired,

and systematic oppression is real,

and we're tired of it, we're tired.

There is power in the Black dollar.

There's power in Black lives, period.

Deprivation, we can't breathe.

"Deprivation" is a really meaningful piece to me.

I wrote it two years ago

and unfortunately it still stands how it feels

to live the Black experience

and I got really angry and I just started writing.

Over the last two weeks,

we've heard and we've seen the suffering of Black people.

What we have in our state

and across this country is a public safety issue

and that means that the public should be able to speak

to the public safety issue.

If we pay their salaries,

we've got to be involved in how money's gonna be.

We need to come to acknowledgment

and we need to start investing in Black lives.

At this point, we have no choice.

This is your opportunity.

it took me 32 years to I guess become woke.

For me, it was just seeing what happened to George Floyd

and just seeing the amount of people

that came together from all different places

From that day, I've just put my everything

fighting against social injustices,

giving back to my community any way that I can.

I'm ashamed that it took me so long,

but like I'm glad that I'm here.

I like to add a little extra color to these things.

I'm queer as hell and my Philly flag just came in,

so I'm excited to finally fly it.

Those two extra stripes are important.

I'm not here representing anyone, just myself.

We're all here for our own reasons, but united in the cause.

Not tolerating bigotry, not tolerating intolerance.

Love and hope.

But what is hope without action?

I am a Researcher who focuses on civil rights issues,

especially around racial injustice and neighborhoods,

neighborhoods for children.

In terms of what has me on the street today,

it was the culmination, these horrible events,

and the need to be able to do something public

and something with our community.

So it's not like it's a big thing

that people come from all over the city,

obviously wanna try to do our little part.

The Vietnam protester with a green on it.

And I was like, "Oh my God, that's like",

"how do I still have that 45 years later?"

You know, it's crazy.

Can't be police, it means justice for all.

Justice for all.

Enough is enough, that's all.

I think it's really important to bring this

to a small town like Norwell.

I mean, I do my best to be the best ally I can be

for the Black Lives Matter moment.

As a person of color,

I will never understand the specific struggles

of Black people, but as person of color to a degree,

I wanna be here to support the Black community.

That's really important to me.

So I prepared to long speech for today.

My speech is directed toward anyone who lives here,

and doesn't believe in the statement Black Lives Matter.

I've been called the N word three times

during my attendance at Norwell High School.

I'm 14 and I've had to come to terms

with the possibility of my death.

And while I may not be Black, as an Asian American,

I know what it's like to endure discrimination,

to be silently judged and be treated differently

because of the color of my skin.

Now, it's not a reflection of the students

of Norwell High,

nor is it a reflection of the city as a whole,

but what it is, is a reflection

of the system this country is built on.

Police officers who can shoot a harmless Black person

because they feel threatened by the color of their skin.

No child should be afraid

of losing their life riding in a car, walking in the mall.

That my skin makes me different than other people.

And history repeats itself far too often

for us to just blindly hope for a better future

without fighting for it ourselves.

At points, I've had to distance myself from my friends

because I was sick of being made fun of for the way

that I got nervous around police cars.

But our purpose now is to go beyond words

and break the vicious cycle of minorities being beaten,

imprisoned and murdered so the next generation can grow

and be better than we were.

And we still have a long way to go

towards making our country truly great.

We need action.

And the choice is ours to make.

Because words won't ensure my safety.

Because at the end of the day,

they could take off that uniform.

I can't scrub this off.

We have a long way to go when our kids

and our kids' kids will be forever grateful

for this world that we built for them,

or they'll be destined

to fight the battles we can never finish.

America won't be the land of the free

and the home of the brave until every single one of us

is granted the most basic rights of all,

the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

Nothing is enough until we get real change.

I was birthed just as any other from the womb of my mother,

but before that, I hunger to know,

how did I get here on the shores full of snow?

My son, Usaamah Rahim, was murdered by the Boston Police

and the FBI on June 2nd, 2015.

My son was Terrance Coleman from the Boston South End.

I called for the ambulance, but the police came.

I said, "I didn't call for you all."

I'm standing next to my son.

Behind us is at the first floor of the door to go out.

The EMS said, "Terrance, you gotta go to the hospital."

He said, "No, I don't wanna go."

I said, "Terrance, just go to get checked,"

'cause he has asthma.

Next thing you know,

the two officers, burst in.

They knocked me and my son down

and all I heard was two shots.

And I get up, I'm yelling,

"What part of the body you shoot my son

over and over again?"

Then said, "We finally got him out the way.

We did a good job and we ain't gotta worry

about him anymore."

It's a damn shame.

You can't call 911 for help.

You dial 911, you know they're never gonna come back.

I called for help.

I didn't call for them to come kill my child.

I'm gonna keep fighting for justice for all.

Eurie was a fabric of the community

and when everything happened and he lost his life,

the Cambridge community lost a big part of that spirit.

It was a dark day when that police officer

in Framingham took Eurie from us.

So in his memory and in his honor, we continue to fight.

I knew Eurie Stamps Sr. very well.

I grew up with his children.

I tell people all the time,

"Racism is never gonna disappear, right?

But if you don't hold people accountable,

it'll start to shrink."

So I think that this is the beginning of a movement

to do some good.

I was a journalist in Framingham when this happened.

I was outraged about it and I said so in the paper

and suddenly I started getting more reaction from people

because people saying things

and understanding things in new ways,

and there's a new generation that's pushing new ideas,

and I just think that's awesome.

I was a cop in the city of Cambridge for 35 years.

You see this big Black dude about 6'4", 270,

and they were scared.

And when that gun went on Eurie's head,

that finger was supposed to be outside the trigger.

All I'm saying is that cop shouldn't be working

and lets get justice for Eurie, you guys.

So imagine sitting in your house in Framingham

and all of a sudden, you hear this ruckus outside your door.

SWAT team entering the house, looking for a culprit

that wasn't there and was not even deemed dangerous.

He was not just a victim, he was a man.

He was a man who was very well loved in two communities.

Paul Duncan said it was an accident,

and it's not an accident,

and he's not getting away with it.

That's right!

We gather here in this square to recommit ourselves

to a country that will in fact not just demand justice,

but will bring it,

but that change and that demand happens with all of you.

for our church.
