[NARRATOR] The Zentraedi forces have

once again attacked the space cruiser,

this time in the vicinity of Bird Island.

All the Veritech squadrons are mobilized,

and a tremendous aerial dogfight occurs.

Rick Hunter survives a direct hit

by bailing out of his plane

but now lies wounded in the water.

Within hours, he is picked up

and transported to the base hospital,

where he is placed under observation.

[ROBOTIC VOICE] Lieutenant Rick Hunter.

Multiple lacerations, concussion, and minor fractures

causing temporary encephalographic irregularities.

No internal damage. We will continue to monitor.

Probable symptoms of delirium.

[CROWD murmuring]

[ANNOUNCER] Ladies and gentlemen,

we will be starting momentarily.

Thank you for your patience.

although delirium appears to be continuing.

[MAN] She's all set to go, buddy.

Well, I can finally fly this thing.

[RICK] Ready? Here we go.

[MAN on radio] Rick. You are cleared for takeoff

on runway TL-24.

Good luck.

[RICK] Enemy laser bombardment! Gotta get out of here!

[screaming]

[LISA on radio] Come in, VT-10! Come in, VT-10!

We're receiving no identifying signal from you!

Why have you put your transponder on stop?

- -Respond! - -Yes, ma'am. Hmm?

I don't know anything about a signal, you old lady!

Pardon me?

Did you call me an old lady?

Who's flying that plane? Is there a civilian up there?

Ahh!

- -Ohh, ohh, ohh! - -[LISA] VT-10,

switch to Guardian mode or you'll be shot down!

Attempt to land immediately!

Ohh! [grunts]

[KIM on PA system] Attention, please!

We are now auctioning the flight suit

formerly worn by Rick Hunter.

Mr. Hunter was forced to turn in the suit

after being removed from the rubble of four buildings

accidentally included in his flight plan.

Publicly humiliated! Argh.

Boy!

[MINMEI] Rick, help!

Please, Rick, come and save me!

Well... there's no choice.

I'll have to get help from my big brother.

[RICK] So the next thing I knew,

they were pulling me out of the plane

or what was left of it

and screaming about how I was going to have

to pay for all the damages. Can you believe it?

So if I read you right,

the only reason you applied to be a pilot

in the first place was so you could go rescue Minmei!

- -Well, then, whoops. - -[RICK] Hmm?

[FOKKER] Good morning, Lieutenant Commander.

I think what she's saying is she expected a salute.

[MAN on PA system] VT-24,

you are now being lifted onto the flight deck.

You will be cleared for takeoff in approximately two minutes,

along with the rest of your squadron.

A reminder, 24:

"Operation Minmei" is classified strictly

as a rescue retrieval.

Under no circumstances should you be attempting

to engage the enemy.

Our monitors register alien fleet activity

in quadrant four.

Prepare for takeoff on my orders,

beginning now.

[MAN on radio] VT-24, approaching alien warship.

[ROBOTIC VOICE] Respiration and heartbeat steady.

[MAN on radio] VT-24, you are off our scanners.

Please respond on channel 7X.

- -What is going on? - -[MAN] VT-24, please come in.

Repeat, you are off our screens.

Please respond if you are able.

Here I am. I was temporarily disabled.

[LISA] Listen up, Corporal Hunter, this is important!

You were confined to quarters.

If you go out now, I won't care

if they shoot you down again.

And you're still going out to save that girl Minmei?

Then I no longer accept responsibility for your actions.

His Veritech has been destroyed, but Corporal Hunter bailed out,

and he's going back there again.

[overlapping conversations]

[ROBOTIC VOICE] Body temperature increasing.

[RICK] Whenever I fly, I get shot down,

but now I can save her with this magic bicycle!

[KIM on PA system] Attention! Corporal Rick Hunter

was shot down this morning

while attempting to fly a bicycle!

Rick, we'll help.

You can't do it alone and besides,

we've been waiting for an excuse to deal with aliens

of this type.

Yeah, we know a way they can be tripped up.

Just leave everything to us.

Ohhh.

[LISA] Why don't we get started right now?

[RICK] I really didn't think you people liked me.

Enough to risk your lives helping me out, I mean.

I guess I was wrong.

I've been sort of wondering, though,

- -[ALIEN SOLDIER] Hey! - -[LISA] Huh?

[MAX] They spotted us! Maybe I can outrun him!

[BEN] Can't you go any faster?

Max, switch modes!

[MAX] Gotta change back into a Guardian!

[glass shatters]

[RICK] Max, shut the door!

[MAX] I don't think I can reach it. Nuh-uh.

[RICK] Gotta get the door shut!

We've got to get out! This thing's gonna blow up!

- -Where can we go? - -[LISA] Rick.

- -What is it? - -We've got to move fast!

The only safe place is the airlock!

[ALL gasp]

[LISA] Let's try down here, I think I see a passageway!

[RICK] I do too. I think it's over this way.

She has a pretty voice,

but we'd better get moving if we're going to save her.

Yes, Commander, but this is the most dangerous part of the job.

you'll want the use of your fighter.

It's the only way you'll get out of here alive.

[RICK] Right. Thank you, Commander.

[LISA] Hurry! We'll see you back on the ship!

[MAN] Corporal Hunter, you're risking your life!

Hang on tight now, 'cause we're gonna be taking off!

We're too slow! Won't they catch us?

Not if we get rid of some dead weight.

[RICK] Now I punch in autopilot.

And here we go!

[MINMEI screams]

[ROBOTIC VOICE] Observation hour 10.

Lieutenant Hunter still unconscious.

Low grade fever.

Encephalogram remains disturbed.

[BOTH grunt]

[RICK] I'm not familiar with the part of the ship.

Oh look, where's that light coming from?

[RICK] I don't know. Let's go check it out!

- -Hey, I'll race ya there! - -Okay.

I bet I make it through that doorway before you.

[RICK] There, I did it! I beat ya. Ha ha!

- -Ohh! - -Look! Maybe we can climb up!

- -Yep. - -Yeah! Come on!

[MINMEI grunting]

Help me up.

- -Here you go. - -[IMINMEI] Thanks.

I'm going to find out what's back here.

[RICK] Hmm. A bunch of giants must have built this ship!

Everything in it is so enormous!

Reminds me of that monster.

[growling]

[gasps] Wait up!

[RICK] Look at all those ships!

There must be millions of them!

Well, how can we ever resist them?

It's frightening!

[LISA] Uh, it's a huge battle.

[LISA] All battles look pretty from a distance

until they surround you.

Where do you think they came from?

I think I invented them in my nightmares.

[ROBOTIC VOICE] Swelling reduced

along temporal lobe.

Vital signs stable.

Disturbed dream state continues.

[RICK] Now then, if I can just get this pipe loose,

we'll have water.

[RICK] There's your shower, milady.

[MINMEI] This is wonderful!

Whoever thought I'd be able to get a shower here?!

[humming]

- -Rick! - -[RICK gasps]

[RICK] Uh, I brought you some fresh clothes from the plane.

[MINMEI] It's been a long time since we've been alone together.

It's been over a year since you were chosen

Miss Macross and became a star.

Nothing's been right since then.

It seems like you're more interested

in your fans than your friends.

no permanent damage to nervous system.

[PHOTOGRAPHER] And again...

to take our picture for the newspapers.

- -l hate them. - -It's okay.

Once the pictures are published, we'll be able to get married.

Well, that's terrific! Every time I start

to talk about something serious,

she goes and falls asleep on me. Hah!

[RICK] It is nice to have her all to myself for a while,

without a lot of other people trying to get in the way.

I wonder if she'll pay more attention to me

now that I've rescued her?

I guess I'll have to wait until we get home

to find that out.

[MINMEI] Rick, how long will we have to live in this tent?

[RICK] Only for two weeks.

After that, the people at the base

will notice we're missing, and they'll start sending out

search teams to find us.

Ha ha. I rescued you,

and now they'll have to rescue us.

[MINMEI] But what if they don't find us? Will we die here?

[RICK] They'll find us, don't worry.

[moaning]
