Minutes before he knocked on the door to go to school.

Then my dad said, "Daughter..."

and because of the lysergic scene,

I changed it from "Luiz Sérgio" to "Luisérgico"

and I formed a band called "Lisergia."

TUTTI FRUTTI GUITAR PLAYER

I already had Lee Marcucci with me.

We had a meeting at Rita's place, in Vila Mariana,

where she lived with her parents.

We took some acoustic guitars and started playing with her

the songs we had, the things we knew.

She said, "I like it, because there's a good base here."

I said, "Cool, so let's start a band: Tutti Frutti."

And that's how it started.

Rita started to be happy.

I think that's when Rita found her rhythm.

She fell into the four by four, the cadence of rock and roll.

We spent almost two months rehearsing every day.

Then we played the first night,

Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

It was fun, it wasn't an obligation.

We were doing what we wanted, it was our dream,

the dream of our lives.

We recorded an album with material we had,

but I don't know why Philips didn't release it,

and that album was shelved.

The record label and the censorship banned it.

CENSORSHIP DIVISION FOR PUBLIC ENTERTAINMENT

When I did all this research,

I found more than 300 documents citing Rita.

I am impressed by the amount of censorship.

"Gente Fina é Outra Coisa" would be the first single,

so the first CD had already been banned by the dictatorship.

And their conclusion is, "The lyrics have an anarchic connotation

and its release could lead to social and family breakdown.

The song lyrics are absolutely not suitable for approval."

Rita wanted the album to come out, she thought it was nice,

the record label was too prudish,

she got pissed off and...

She ended up breaking some things there.

She goes in there with Tim Maia, who was also pissed off with them,

and Midani, who was the CEO, wouldn't see them,

so they go into his room, without him there

and destroy the entire room.

In 1974,

the Rita and Tutti Frutti concert went to Rio de Janeiro,

and was on for more two or three months.

We already had... The gay movement was already quite big,

they were our fans.

Rita really won over this audience,

with her stance, her asexual thing on stage,

the David Bowie vibe and so on.

Then, there's a scene up ahead with a record label telling her,

"You need to dress like a girl,

She got pissed, told everyone to fuck off,

and then her contract with Philips ended.

Because Rita changed record labels

and the record label wanted her at the front,

It was that incredible album, Fruto Proibido.

which included a song by Rita.

Rita traveled to Europe

and we took care of the mixing of the album.

And she ended up not liking how the album turned out.

She complained.

I think that bothered Rita a little.

Not that the album is bad. The album went well.

It's curious, here in the autograph she gave me,

she wrote, "I like 'Coisas da Vida',"

because she doesn't like the rest of the album.

"Coisas da Vida," a song that Rita showed me on the piano

at her mother's house.

She said, "I'm writing this song."

She herself speaks of this song with a certain pride

in having written it on the piano.

Someone told the police she had drugs in her house,

they found some drugs there and arrested Rita.

They went to my house after arresting her.

The police went to my room, I went out and saw Rita with my father.

Then we went to the street.

When we got to the street there was a police van, a huge car,

the FBI went there, like, a rock singer from Brazil

maybe accused of international trafficking.

RITA LEE IN FEMALE PRISON

It was a very shocking event.

It was a strange, wrong thing.

They planted evidence, they did.

They were there, like, "Found it."

We were always very worried about the police, drugs and all,

because we were living this terror, you know?

It was a full dictatorship,

so no one knew exactly what could happen.

I was released, we were held there for two days and then we left.

And Rita stayed.

But the causes are not these.

JOURNALIST

They are more political, if you notice.

During the Mutantes era,

a Rita fan was shot dead by an officer inside the show.

And there was a shot...

ASSEMBLY DESPISES POLICE VIOLENCE

And that human tide moved away

and, from the stage, I saw the body of a boy in the venue.

And around that time, a lady came

and said to her it was her son who died,

and the police said he was causing a mess outside the show.

She said all I had to do

to bring justice to her son, who loved me and all,

was to go to court and testify,

saying that I saw her son's body inside the venue.

"Dear Rita, look deep into my son's eyes

and see the sadness of a grieving and suffering mother.

Tell me the truth,

it was for you that he died, wasn't it?

But it's not your fault.

and God will reward you for the truth."

So I went to the courthouse,

"Where was the body?" "Inside the venue."

Days later, weeks later,

I was arrested.

It is believed that this was

one of the reasons why the police at the time

developed a certain antipathy, a grudge against Rita.

I was pregnant with Beto, we were married,

Roberto was still in Rio, playing with Ney.

We were rehearsing and Virgínia called me

and told me that Rita had been arrested.

I immediately got on a bus and came to São Paulo.

THREE WEEKS BEFORE RITA'S PASSING

"I didn't know you were coming to São Paulo on Sunday,

that's why I didn't put your name on the visitors list.

And besides, I look awful, imagine that.

I wouldn't even let you see me like that.

I don't know what's going to happen to me anymore,

because everyone who comes in tells me the story in a different way.

I'm already getting used to the idea of having my son in prison.

I want you to know that I don't intend to cling to you

or demand anything from you.

Besides everything, you're my best friend

and I'll never forget that.

Please take care of you, okay?"

But there is a whole context in this letter

that is transported to the present day.

It's a farewell letter.

RITA LEE IS STAYING IN PRISON

A YEAR OF HOUSE ARREST, RITA LEE'S CONVICTION

Rita was tried and sentenced to one year,

but then it became one year in a semi-open regime.

So, when Rita got out of prison, we went to live with her parents,

because her house had been completely destroyed by the police.

It started out in a very difficult financial situation.

She spent all her money on a lawyer, it was very complicated.

No money, no money, no money.

Then, for a short period of time,

they stayed in a very small apartment and Beto was born.

She focused

on motherhood.

And Roberto at that time, something I think is very important,

he comes in as a structure, of course, as a life partner,

husband, father of her son and all,

and also a business structure.

But I said it was not possible that she...

That she was in such a deplorable financial situation.

And then he also started as a manager at Refestança,

Rita's concert with Gilberto Gil.

Tutti Frutti and Banda do Gil.

We sang and played in several places in Brazil.

Gil was very kind to her,

the helping hand she needed at that time.

It was very difficult for her to be accepted,

And I think that Gil's arrival helped a lot.

But none of the shows were recorded.

We only recorded at Maracanãzinho,

which had a large audience, whatever.

A mistake.

There is a certain swing, a movement,

At a certain point, one of the fins fell onto the stage.

The show at Maracanãzinho was packed, really packed.

And at a certain time, the stage collapsed.

With the collapse of the stage in Rio, Refestança also ended.

After Refestança, Rita releases with Babilônia,

which would be Rita's last album

with Rita Lee and Tutti Frutti on the cover.

Babilônia was recorded...

It is from 1978, already produced by Guto Graça Melo.

But it was still the Rita...

For example, there was "Miss Brasil 2000,"

Roberto was working on this album.

I was taking care of the business side,

putting on shows, all that stuff.

The keyboard player left the band, I played the keyboard.

Then I joined and started playing too.

of rock and disco.

When the album came out,

the band saw it only said "Rita Lee" on the cover,

it didn't say "Rita Lee and Tutti Frutti,"

which was what we thought we were doing.

They hanged the Gardens of Babylon

Rita was recruited by the label, not Tutti Frutti,

but Rita Lee and Tutti Frutti didn't formally exist,

and they wanted to have "flight autonomy."

It was the beginning of separating Rita Lee as a solo artist

and there is no band anymore.

so he ended up registering the name Tutti Frutti in his name.

Rita was... She didn't forgive him.

The band remained with us.

And this band came to be called Cães e Gatos.

From the moment Roberto joined, Rita began to have huge success.

During the time Rita was pregnant with João,

we started playing, playing, playing.

I was huge, I recorded with the guitar up here.

Rita has two sisters.

The oldest, Mary, and the middle sister, Virgínia.

The girls loved Mary, Mary was like a guru.

So I got home, called my mom, and gave her this message.

As soon as I hung up, the hospital called me.

She was already gone.

She already had health problems, she was taking some medication,

and she was a drinker.

She ended up being hospitalized and never left the hospital,

she didn't resist.

I think it was the first major encounter with death

that Rita had in her life, and it was quite disruptive.

It was the loss of a piece

of the whole family.

But soon after, Rita became pregnant with Antônio.

She always stops everything, as she always says,

the moment of pregnancy is always sacred.

While Rita was pregnant with Antônio,

we wrote and started recording Saúde.

I'm fed up with all the gossip

I want to be healthier

The album Saúde has a strong connection with a time

when we wanted to get very healthy

in order to have a healthy child.

All I know is that I'll take Better care of myself

And Antônio was born alongside

the release of Saúde.

So, on August 6, 1981,

the same day my mother was born,

the same day the bomb went off in Hiroshima,

and the same day Andy Warhol was born.

So, a day full of events of maximum magnitude.

While I'm alive, with all my grace

I still might make a lot of people happy

I was born in 1981,

it already had that maximum frequency, that was always my reality,

I don't remember at any time doing something in a public place

with other people, and it being a normal experience.

You and Roberto convey the image of a healthy family.

How do you achieve this? How do your children view your music?

The kids love it. Rock is kid's business.

It's pretty obvious, no?

And Roberto and I share everything,

all the business of taking care of the house,

the music thing and taking care of the kids at the same time.

The dictatorship had its eyes on Rita.

Every time Rita became more successful, their eyes turned to Rita.

Rita was the composer whose lyrics

were most vetoed by censors.

Saúde was Rita's album that had the most banned songs.

If you see in this document, it is a general document,

they only managed to release three from here.

-"Favorita..." -Unbelievable.

"Galinhagem," which became "Tititi,"

and "Afrodite," which became "Banho de Espuma."

The themes we talked about were not so political,

but more about habits and customs.

"We examined the aforementioned lyrics

and found they contain vulgar terms,

phrases with malicious and coarse connotations,

as well as insinuations of sexual relations."

They were lyrics that spoke of love,

that spoke of passion, that spoke of sex.

It sounds more like motel music.
