Light, sound and electricity special.
Oi, oi! 'Ello, sunshines!
It's your favourite ball of fiery gas.
I'm here to gas on
about light energy, like you get from yours truly,
sound energy, like my beautiful voice you're hearing right now,
and electricity, the kind of electric energy you get
when you plug something in or use batteries.
Ugh, typical! The batteries are dead.
How am I going to see now?
Oh, yeah! I'm the sun!
I don't need no torch or electricity.
But you lot love it.
You've been obsessed with it for centuries.
Boom!
Checking out some mad science from the past, innit.
Man's in Italy, my bredren,
Alessandro Volta, the guy that volts is named after, innit.
The ting that you use to measure electricity, guys.
That's this guy, bruv. Nuff respect in the ends.
My man has figured out how you can create electricity
between two metals.
So, he's got himself a copper disc and a lickle piece of cardboard,
soaked that in salty water, innit,
put that with the copper disc and add a zinc disc
to make electric sandwich fam, aight.
Stack these sandwiches up.
The bigger your stack, the more powerful the electricity. Rah!
Volta calls this a voltaic pile.
It's like an old-school battery, fam.
It's bare easy to make,
and my guy Volta is about to test the electricity
of his voltaic pile on himself.
Yo, is this safe?
Who knows?
Oh, don't try this mad ting at home, yeah.
Otherwise, it's gonna mess you up, innit.
Um... Oh!
Obviously, the electrical current pass through Alessandro.
That's why man got shocked, innit.
It works! Fact, cuz. Stick a fork in him. Man's done!
No medium rare. Hey, you OK?
I might not do that again.
No. That's real, you know. Big Danny.
Hey! What's good, bro? Big Manny. What's going on, my science bro?
Let me tell you something, yeah?
This science from the past is a mad ting still.
That's facts. Mm. Is my man OK, though?
Yeah. My man's just asleep, man. It's calm, man.
Are you sure? Yeah, don't worry about it. It's all good.
Anyway, you know what time it is.
BOTH: Still!
All right, come on, let's bounce, man. Let's roll, man.
MAN CRIES OUT
Oh, sorry, brother.
Greetings! It's your main ma'am, Queen Victoria, here,
with all the latest Victorian technology and machines.
STOMACH RUMBLES
Hark! I can hear them whirring,
clunking and squeaking away right now.
No, sorry - that's me actually, ma'am.
I had your curry leftovers for brekkie.
HE FARTS
Oh! Put a cork in it, Seepage.
Welcome to Gadget Ma'am.
HE FARTS
Oh! Sorry.
There have been some amazing scientific ideas during my reign,
and here is just one of them.
Seepage! Oh, sorry.
Check it - electric light. My crib, Osborne House,
here on the Isle of Wight,
was one of the first buildings to be wired with electricity.
After all, you can't do THIS with a candle.
SHE CLICKS FINGERS
Seepage! Oh! Sorry, ma'am.
On again.
Off again.
On again.
Off again.
On again. Off again. On again. Off.
Oh, dear! Looks like I need to get my wiring checked.
Luckily, I look good in any light. WEAKLY: Help...me.
We have electricity on my planet, Plarp, too, your madge.
In fact, we've had the whole planet programmed to voice commands.
So, when I say, "Off"... What's up, baby?
And when I say, "On", boom!
Say what you like about electricity but since we've had it,
we've been better off.
No, I didn't mean that one. On!
I hate it when that happens. I get really cheesed off.
On!
You have to be really careful with electricity, don't you?
Right, I'm off.
Aaargh!
Evil plan 79 - magnetic malevolence.
Tremble at my new creation,
the Electromagnet of Doom.
HE LAUGHS EVILLY
MILD CHEERING
I said tremble, Agent Goody.
Never, Dr Climbing Frame. It's Big Brain,
and you WILL tremble, for this is an electromagnet,
which means it's only magnetic when it's turned on using electricity.
And it's so big it'll attract magnetic objects from far away,
objects like - oh, I don't know - every warship in the world.
Ooh, and just think of all the gold and silver it'll attract.
No, Elaine, it's a magnet,
so it doesn't attract non-magnetic metals like gold and silver.
Oh, so, no platinum or titanium or tin, lead.
They're all non-magnetic metals.
Thank you for pointing out the limitations
of my new favourite machine, Elaine.
I'm totally cool with you doing that.
Oh, no! I can explain.
Doc, I didn't mean anything...
Take a walk with me, Elaine. Don't worry.
I'm not cross.
I just need you to have a big old wave in front of my Death Laser Bot.
OK, then. Hello.
LAZER FIRES
So sad. I don't think I'll ever get over her death.
Now, where were we? You were about to turn on your giant electromagnet.
Actually, I wasn't, because that would be super-unsafe
and I've learned my lessons from last time.
Yeah, that tank came through the wall fast.
Indeed. And shush, Ricky.
But that incident led to my new metal safety helmets,
complete with built-in ear defenders.
How fetching. Jealous!
So, we're going to evacuate everyone apart from you, Agent Goody,
before we turn the magnet on and you will die.
What did he say? "Turn the magnet on." OK.
No, wait! Don't turn... Argh!
COMPUTER: Magnet on. No, turn it off!
I can't reach.
METAL safety helmets, you said? Oh, no!
Agh! The magnet got my helmet!
Not wearing a helmet is a clear health and safety breach.
Take a walk with me, Ricky.
Argh!
Curse my protective, magnetic steel underpants!
What? The magnet has activated your laser bot!
Thanks for stating the obvious, Ricky. That's very useful.
Oh, you're kidding me!
Thanks, Doctor Slow Lane.
For the first time with magnets, I can see the attraction. Oh!
Don't worry, Doc. I've got to the magnet control.
COMPUTER: Magnet power increased.
I think I've turned the dial the wrong way.
You think? Er, Doctor Big Brain, with my helmet gone,
I can turn it off. Then why haven't you?
Oh, take yourself for a walk, Ricky.
I need someone to test my human box maker.
No, wait. What are you doing?
Turn the magnet off before you leave!
RICKY SCREAMS
I never liked him.
EVIL LAUGHTER
We have power.
IGOR SNIFFS
Hmm?
Igor! There's no time to rest.
Turn on the machine and give my creation life!
Open the circuit!
Um, Doctor? What is it?
The circuit is already open,
which means the machine is off. Pff, nonsense!
Everyone knows open means on.
No-one shouted, "Open sesame", expecting a door to close.
If you take the middle two letters out of "open,"
you literally get "on."
Now, open the circuit and bring my creation to life!
HE CACKLES EVILLY
Yeah, but look - electricity can only travel around a circuit
if all the parts are connected.
When you open the switch, it creates a gap between the wires,
and that's why, when the machine is off, it's called an open circuit
and when we close the circuit, like so,
the electricity flows and your creation comes to life.
Stop talking nonsense and open the circuit!
But, Doctor... Do it!
The monster isn't moving.
You've clearly built the circuit wrong!
I haven't. Look what happens when I close the circuit.
MONSTER GIBBERS
You are jealous of the monster.
You don't want him to come alive!
But he IS alive.
Huh? No, he's not. Bah!
It's YOUR fault. Every time I close the circuit, he comes alive
and every time I open it, he collapses again.
Look - open, close, open, close, open, close.
Igor! I command you to leave the weird science
to the weird scientists.
Hello.
HE GASPS
It's alive!
Speak to me, my beautiful monster.
Tell me of your hopes and dreams.
Speak! Can you stop messing with the switch?
It's giving me a headache. Oh, um, Igor, if you could, er...
Yeah. Thank you very much.
So, you were saying closed circuit is on?
Yeah.
Hmm.
Ugh!
Elegance, class, style.
The true power of nature has been harnessed
to create this elegant watch.
Potato.
Po-ta-to.
Make time for the potato - nature's power cell.
Raw potato power, created by adding zinc...
Zinc. We call that the anode.
..which reacts with acid in the watch's
barely noticeable potato power cell
and winds up becoming negatively charged.
Negatively charged.
Add copper... Copper.
We call that the cathode.
..which becomes positively charged and positively elegant.
Just add wires to complete an electrical circuit
and you'll never be late again.
You've got a potato battery, creating electricity,
creating style, creating potato power.
Potato power. Elegant, earthy, exquisite
baked with cheese and beans.
It's time to use the power of nature
and use the power of the potato.
Pour homme. Pour femme.
Potato.
Hey, babes. Queen of the Dinosaurs here - your gal, T-rex.
So I guess we all know electricity is a type of energy.
But guess what, babes? So is...
..SOOOOOUND! Eek!
Hee! Gets them every time.
For centuries, trying to understand how sound energy moves around
and gets into our ears has totally fascinated brainboxes
like Leonardo da Vinci,
the brilliant artist who painted the Mona Lisa.
Ha-ha!
PFFRT!
Oh, Terry, I hope you're going to clean this up.
It's not doing my skin any favours.
BELL RINGS
How does that sound, Freddie?
DISTANT: What was that? I can't hear you!
Da Vinci?
Oh, here comes Karen.
Haven't you got a nice, quiet painting to be getting on with?
That is too loud. Or maybe it's too quiet.
No, it's definitely too loud.
Or maybe it's definitely too quiet.
It depends on where you're standing.
BELL RINGS LOUDLY
Please stop.
How did that sound, Freddie?
I can't hear you.
I can just hear a fairly quiet bell and an angry lady.
You see? A fairly quiet bell. Yeah, but it's not quiet, is it?
It's just quiet to him because he's much further away.
Yes, but why? I'm conducting an experiment
to see how noise travels through different materials.
Like, um, air.
HE BLOWS
Urgh!
Sorry. Prawns.
Look, watch closely.
BELL RINGS
Ah!
The bell vibrates, which makes the air around it vibrate,
and then the vibrations travel through here. Ow!
It's the vibrations you're actually hearing.
Mamma mia, that's a lot of wax. Surprised you can hear anything.
Haven't we finished yet? Not yet, Freddie!
I can't hear you!
Bang once for yes, twice for no.
Er...
SHE SIGHS
BELL RINGS TWICE
Was that twice?
BELL RINGS ONCE
Thank you!
If he could hear it as loud as I can hear it,
he wouldn't keep asking you to bang it.
That's what's so fascinating!
You see, I have discovered that vibrations,
as they travel through the air, begin to spread out.
So something that sounds loud here...
BELL RINGS
..sounds quiet over there!
Isn't that right, Freddie? What?
OK, so if I travelled much further away -
upstairs in my house, for example -
this racket would be much quieter?
Bingo! You got it at last.
Fine. I'll do that, then.
Fine. Go do that, then.
OK, Freddie, go even further.
We'll see if it gets quieter. OK!
Hey, da Vinci. I'm upstairs.
And is it a bit quieter up there? BELL RINGS
No, but come a bit closer. All right...
Yeah, that's better.
Oh!
SHE LAUGHS
Mm.
Freddie, I need a towel. What?
I'm Barry Loud! And I'm Michaela Explosion!
Welcome to the...
This is the show where we rank...
..by how loud it is.
AIRHORN HONKS
We measure everything in decibels,
which is the standard unit for measuring...
ALARM BLARES
Oh, it's basically how loud something is.
So let's start our countdown.
In at ten decibels,
it's the sound of your own breathing.
ALARM BLARES
SOFT EXHALATION
BOTH: Ooh!
Love that!
Next, jumping up one place to 20 decibels,
it's a whisper.
QUIETLY: Please don't film me.
ALARM BLARES
Oh! Lolololol!
Weirdly, even though 20 decibels looks like
it's just ten decibels more than ten decibels, it's actually...
..which is...
And in at 60dB,
it's the volume of a normal conversation.
Oh, she's... She's gone. She's there! There!
Why are you following me?
We're having a normal conversation. This is not normal!
Next in our countdown, up at 70 decibels -
that's ten decibels more than a normal conversation -
it's the sound of an alarm clock!
ALARM RINGS
Argh!
That's way louder than a normal conversation!
How is that only ten decibels more?
Well, it's like we said, the decibel scale is weird -
a ten decibel increase is...
Will you please stop following me?
FARTING
Oh!
And in at 80 decibels, it's the sound of a fart.
Hey...
ALARM BLARES
I...I wouldn't say that was at 80.
The average fart is...
..than normal conversation.
Urgh, that just reached me. Ugh!
PNEUMATIC DRILL CLATTERS
And in at 100 decibels is a pneumatic drill!
ALARM BLARES
It's so loud! Thanks!
Next in the countdown...
..a non-mover at 120 decibels...
..it's...a...thunderclap!
THUNDER CRACKS
What even is this show?!
But a new entry, in at 129 decibels,
is the Guinness World Record holder for an individual scream -
teaching assistant Jill Drake. Oh, hello.
SHE SCREAMS Argh!
Well, that's all we've got time for this week. Tune in next week,
when hopefully your ears will have recovered.
SHE SCREAMS, THUNDER CRACKS
Coming soon to a wall near you...
I am The Shadow!
Whenever something blocks the light, I'll be there.
You can see me but you can't catch me.
The Shadow comes in many sizes.
When I move closer to the light, I grow larger.
Mwahahaha!
When I move further away from the light, I become...
SQUEAKILY: ..smaller. ..harder to spot.
And if there are two light sources,
there will be two The Shadows - double trouble!
Look, I can even make cool animals with my hands.
It's a crocodile! Roar!
"Wow, The Shadow's so cool. I wish he was my boyfriend."
Oh, sorry, croc, The Shadow isn't looking to date right now,
for he is married to...justice!
Nothing can defeat The Shadow... DOOR OPENS
..except... Why haven't you got the big light on? Mum-ah!
Do you want anything washing? I'm putting a load on.
Mum, I'm doing my The Shadow monologue.
Oh, sorry, love.
DOOR CLOSES
Nothing can defeat The Shadow except...
HE TUTS
Hang on.
SWITCH CLICKS
Nothing can defeat The Shadow,
except if there is light and nothing to block it.
For then there can be no shadow.
Mum, please!
Sorry, I just really think I should wash those pants.
Fine!
Um....are you wearing...?
The Shadow wears two pairs of pants.
Er, and...underneath the trousers? Fine, three. Good.
Shut the light off, please, Mum. Can you tidy your room?
You can't just hide everything in the shadows.
SWITCH CLICKS, DOOR CLOSES
That's what she thinks. For I am The Shadow.
And I wear three pairs of pants.
Although currently just two.
Oh. Hey. It's me, Planet Earth.
I'm just catching some rays from the Sun over there.
It's kind of my thing.
I like to rotate every 24 hours,
make sure the rays get everywhere. Keeps me nice and toasty.
Oh, and it keeps everything on my surface alive,
including you guys.
The Sun is actually our nearest star,
and it's a really, really long way away.
150 million kilometres.
It's so far that sunlight takes eight minutes to reach me.
But how long do you think it takes light from
the nearest star after the Sun to reach me?
Is it...
A, four hours,
B, four days,
or C, four years?
Any guesses?
The answer is...
C, four years!
Well, it's four years, two months, two weeks and six days, to be exact.
The star, Proxima Centauri,
is over 40 trillion kilometres away.
That's a four with 13 noughts after it.
Space distances like that are so huge,
we measure them in how long it takes the light to travel across them.
So, we say that it's 4.25 light years away.
OK, back to getting some rays.
Ah...
I'm Sir Isaac Newton.
I'm at something called a theme park,
and this is science at speed.
I love parks.
They're quiet, peaceful places where one can rest,
relax and contemplate the final mysteries of...
SCREAMING
What was that?
Today on Science at Speed...
And I shall be telling you all about my light prisms.
These are objects, usually made of glass,
that have a very interesting effect on light.
Let's do this.
Actually, maybe I... I want to get off now.
No? Fine. Now, don't look at the sun,
but if you were to look at the sun,
then it would appear to be white.
I discovered that if you shine white light through a prism,
it splits the light into lots of different colours!
HE SHRIEKS
I proved that white light is made
of different colours of the rainbow.
HE SCREAMS
We call this rainbow of light the visible spectrum of light!
HE CONTINUES SCREAMING
There are other types of light,
but these are invisible...
Why is it dark?!
HE LAUGHS
..these are invisible to human beings.
Ultraviolet light, X-rays,
microwaves! Ha-ha!
They are all part of what's called the electromagnetic spectrum!
Oh, thank goodness we're back.
Well, I think it's about time that I showed you
some of my actual light prisms, don't you?
Oh, no. They must have fallen out and...
Oh, don't say I have to do this again.
Wow, so there's light, sound and electricity.
So much amazing energy stuff
that I need to lie down and relax my nergals.
IT FARTS
Oh, pardon. Heh-heh...
Relaxed them a bit too much there.
Time for some music now.
So put your tentacles up,
and close 75% of your eyes,
cos Sir Isaac Newton's back with an illuminating song about light
and that electromagnetic spectrum he was just screaming about.
Eh... Huh?
What do you mean you don't have tentacles?
Weird.
They're coming out of your phone They can travel through walls
It's a radiowave Sending TV and calls
Next are microwaves And they're cooking my tea
And the fact they do that was found out accidentally
They're coming out of the fire and coming out of the sun
An infrared ray feels hot But you cannot see one
Also out of the sun It's so dazzling and white
You should all know this one It is visible light
Now, what do we call this now?
Do you know?
The electromagnetic spectrum
All the light we know
Radio Microwave is next, you know
Then infrared That's heat to me
Visible light that we can see
Ultraviolet tans our skin
X-rays let us see within
Gamma rays will blow your minds
They're all the light kinds
And now ultraviolet light It's a part of sunshine
We've known UV makes you tan since 1889
It's coming out of the sun And it's burning my skin
I'm applying sun cream So ultraviolet won't win
Through your skin and your flesh We can fire X-rays
But they're stopped by the bones Your insides on display
Gamma rays are light too But a dangerous kind
If you get up too close They'll leave damage behind
Now, what do we call this, now?
Do you know?
The electromagnetic spectrum
All the light we know
Radio Microwave is next, you know
Then infrared That's heat to me
Visible light that we can see
Ultraviolet tans our skin
X-rays let us see within
Gamma rays will blow your minds
They're all the light kinds. #
Oh!
God, I actually hit him. I actually hit him. We're good.
We're good, yeah. I didn't...I didn't.
I stopped acting then cos I was worried. Sorry.
Weird and gross stuff you now know
Hope you enjoyed
