actually have survived

eye-watering injuries

'So Guz and I have headed
to the studio...

..and with help from engineer Zoe...

..we'll be recreating the booby traps
from Home Alone,

to find out just how dangerous
they really are.'

all the traps in Home Alone,

in real life, get through that house,

and catch that smug little brat,

It's just occurred to me, I mean,

we could die doing this.

We could die doing all... Brooker got
to go to Chicago and meet the cast.

This is, without doubt,
the best job I've ever had.

In fact, I think it's the best
Christmas present I've ever had.

I have been obsessed with Home Alone
ever since I was a kid,

and I'm still obsessed with it now.

I spent five days last year building
a McCallister house out of Lego.

I've got an artwork of the house
in my living room.

And every day, the alarm on my phone
is the music from Home Alone.

Literally, I wake up every day
thinking of the film,

because it gives me so much joy.
I love it so much.

And now, I'm fulfilling a life's
ambition by flying out to the States

to visit some of the iconic
locations,

meet some of the people involved
in making the film,

and learn a little bit more
about the stunts and traps

Guz and James are going to be doing
back in the studio.

I've had an absolute result.

Right, we've figured out what stunts
we're going to do from the film.Yes.

Now we've got to figure out
how to best them

so we can get that little brat,
Kevin.

I want to mash that kid up.

But here's the thing.

You and I aren't scientists
or engineers.

We don't know how to make
any of that safe.That's true.

So look who we brought in.

So we need to test each trap,

find out what damage
it would do in real life,

figure out how science
can help us survive it,

then test it out for real
at the end of the show.

The fact you even want to try them,
is slightly foolhardy.

To do these as you would see them
in the film,

is incredibly dangerous.

How dangerous, scale of one to ten?

Ooh-hoo!Surprisingly, a nappy
is not only incredibly absorbent,

it contains a polymer
that when supersaturated,

is also fire-retardant.

If I cut the inside in here open,

so that's cotton mixed with
sodium polyacrylate,

which is this stuff.

So this white powder will absorb
up to 300 times its own weight,

in water.
Ah!

I'll just scatter a bit into here.

So you could make a suit
essentially out of nappies,

and that would give you
a layer of protection.

How good a layer of protection?

Professional stunt performers
don't wear nappies,

but they do use the same material
to protect themselves.

And they use it in a jelly form,

so this is the same stuff,
just pulverised down.

That's going to be your base layer
of protection.

Like, Guz's kids who wear nappies,

would they be safe then
from fire and stuff?No, James.

Don't try this at home.

Even if it is wet?Well, only
in the area where the nappy is.

Theoretically, if I covered the kids
head to toe with wet nappies...

Theoretically, yeah.

In practice, please don't set fire
to your children.

Don't do that, that's dangerous.
A blanket of nappies.

Or as a beard net?Yeah.
You can really massage that in.

Over the skin, hair...

I recommend a combination
of factors.

You want the gel as your base layer,

and then over the top,
the silicone hood,

which is the stunt artist's
best friend when it comes to fire.

it starts again,

and it's on TV again
and they're showing it on a loop.

What is it you think about the film

that makes it so, you know... has
given it such a long-lasting impact?

My performance.

It's brilliant!

But to me, the key, that's always
been the kid empowerment,

the kid's gonna take on scary people

When kids watch it they go,

And the parents love it, to see
their kids feel empowered like that.

I remember when me and my brothers
were younger, we watched it,

we used to make little plans and lay
out Micro Machines under the window.

We were so desperate to get burgled,

it was going to be a hoot.You were
gonna do it, you were gonna win.

As an adult, you know,
as I kind of watch it now,

you do realise that actually,
it's quite violent, what Kevin does.

Very violent, you know, and some
of it's kind of sadistic, too.

Kevin was a sadist.

I mean, if you look at what he did
to Harry and me,

he puts his head on fire,
he smashes us in the face,

I'm attacked by spiders...

'They brought the tarantula
on the set.'

He says, "I'm just gonna
put the thing on your face."

Watched it the other day,
and the tarantula actually...

Stunt men are the heroes
of the movie.

I mean, of the comedy part
of that movie,

they were just... took it to
a whole, whole another level.

It was not funny to watch,
it was scary to watch.

And that was the least of it.
The paint can thing,

I mean, I think they had it rigged

where, like,
they had a safety harness.

These guys go up, you know, were up
five, six stairs or something.

They're supposed to jump back
and they have a rig on 'em,

but the camera could see the rig.

There's no special effects
in the movie.

Like, there's no CGI, it's all live,
it's all on the camera.

So those two guys...

..they're up five steps,
the paint can comes,

they jump backwards...

..and land on their backs...
(SHRIEKS)

..like, smash!

And you just go, "Oh my God,
are you OK?" It really does hurt.

I mean, it's not just,
"Oh, that would hurt."

It really did hurt THEM.
Yeah.

I was fine,
which was the important part.

No, it's crazy that...
It was crazy to watch.

by watching stunt men doing it,

how on earth is James
going to survive it for real?'

I'd actually prefer to face
the blowtorch,

because you can be burnt
and very quickly put it out.

But straight-on paint can
to the face,

we're talking brain damage.

I'm glad you're doing this one.
Now I'm worried why this is here.

This is a ballistic gel head
that's made from an agar-agar jelly,

so it's vegan,
but it's a very dense jelly

used to simulate the human body
in crash test scenarios.

I don't think the vegan thing

comforts me at the minute.
I mean, you know...

That's more solid than it looked.

And this face doesn't even have,
like, a jawbone or teeth,

or a nose to be broken.
I quite like my nose.

head is a definite representation

of James' actual face?

ALEX: 'It's crazy to think
the stunts in Home Alone

were all done for real.
None of that CGI business.

So I'm getting the scoop from
one of the heroes involved.

It's Joe Pesci's stuntman

and innovator of the now infamous
Home Alone fall, Troy Brown.'

Troy, thank you for joining me today.

First things first,

Home Alone has become well-known
for its brutality in the stunts.

What did you think when you first saw

some of what they had planned
for you?

For me to make, you know,
comedy funny,

you have to do physical stuff.

So you know, we tried to do...
It was all for real.

You try to hit the ground
as hard as you can.

It's always funny seeing
someone get hurt.(LAUGHS)

In terms of the stunts
in the first film,

if you can kind of talk me through...
Mm.

The first one was the blowtorch
to the head. How did that work out?

They had a special cap
they'd blow the heat on,

and that's more of a visual effect.

But on the second Home Alone,
when we did the blowtorch,

they lit my head on fire.
I did real fire,

where I did a handstand
in the toilet...Yeah.

..and put it out.
That was real fire.

The stunts in the film are so iconic.

But the one that stands out
above all the rest,

is the Home Alone fall. Um...

Please can you talk us through
what the Home Alone fall is,

and how it's done?

Basically, it's just landing flat
on your back

without twisting
or putting an arm out.

You basically just plant one foot
and push off as hard as you can

and get your feet above your head
so you become flat,

and make sure you have your chin
tucked so you don't hit your head.

And then after Home Alone,
it really got my career going

as far as I got called for
every stair fall,

getting hit by cars
and physical stuff.Yeah.

The stunts and the falls,

they're a big part of why
I think it's had that longevity.

Talking of falls, a lot of
the stunts was Dan Stern.

Cos he's super-athletic.

Yeah, he did a lot of the stuff
like getting hit with the iron.

Of course, what was hilarious
in the second one

was where he was getting
electrocuted.Yeah! (CHUCKLES)

I mean, that was funny
just watching it, you know?

Oooh!

Would you do any of these stunts
again now?

I'm not, you know...
I'm old and fat now,

so it wouldn't look as good,
but yeah!(CHUCKLES)

And this is the big question.

You and Joe had so much chemistry
on the film.

Where did that come from?

We were classic characters
in a certain way.

He's the short, tough Jimmy Cagney,
you know, and I was the goof.

It's uh, Laurel and Hardy, you know,
the contrasting characters.

Their friendship was fun,
the movie was fun.

The silliness, we both approached it
in our own way, you know.

It was comfortable with each of us.

And the chemistry kinda clicked.

I heard somewhere that on set,

Joe genuinely wanted Macaulay Culkin
to be intimidated by him.

(CHUCKLES)Would he kind of act
to intimidate him?

Joe wanted everybody
to be intimidated by him!

That wasn't just an act,
that was everybody.

Joe, yeah, I think Joe did have
a bit of that, like...

he wanted Mac to be scared of him.

Again, I think he wanted
everybody...

and he still is scary.

You've done so much in your career,
so many films, so many TV shows.

But is Home Alone a thing that,
kind of, people talk to you...

Oh, yeah.
..the most about?

Yeah, people are crazy about it.
I've had people come up to me,

with tattoos of myself on them.

Like, people have me tattooed on
different parts of their body,

and say, "Hey, Marv!"

And Wet Bandits, you know,
the Wet Bandits, or Marv,

but the Wet Bandit really hung on
as, uh...

It resonated with people, I guess.

Is that, kind of, the weirdest kind
of fan obsession thing you've seen?

Yeah. I mean, that can't get
any weirder.

Like, you don't know me, and...

and you took the effort
to permanently tattoo my face

onto your body. That blows my mind.

Again, like,
I've learned to embrace it

as opposed to thinking
it's too weird.

If people wanna go off on their
own journeys, on Home Alone,

and just be obsessed by it,
I think that's beautiful now.

I don't think I've ever been
this excited in my entire life.

First up, it's the big one,
the McCallister house.

To me, this house
epitomises Christmas,

and a 30-year dream of visiting it
is about to come true.

This is amazing.

'The McCallisters' house has always
seemed a magical place to me.

I always wondered what Kevin's
parents did, to be able to afford it.

Now, I've been told I can't bring
the crew to film here,

so I've had to ditch the cameras
and go mobile.'

Let me have a look, oh my God!

I'm coming up to it now.

I can't believe this.

Oh man, I'm actually stood outside
the McCallister house.

I can't believe it,
I can't believe I'm here.

Honestly, I've loved this house
and wanted to visit this house,

ever since I was, like, six.

This is unbelievable! I might as well
give you some facts, ain't I?

'Only the living room and hallway
were used in the film.

The rest of the rooms
were actually a studio set.

The amazing treehouse was built
especially for the film.

They knocked it down again
straight after filming.

It's become an unbelievably popular
tourist spot,

with dozens of superfans like me
turning up,

to get their photo taken outside.

It was bought in 2012
for $1.6 million,

an absolute bargain considering
it was listed at 2.4 million.'

I can't believe I'm here.

I've got to use the hand to the face.

Something that reminds us of what it
felt like to have Christmas as a kid,

I've been obsessed with this film
ever since I first saw it,

when I was six years old, and I love
it even more now that I'm 38.

And to come here, meet some of the
cast and see where it was filmed,

hasn't only been a career highlight,

I think it's been a life highlight,
