a traditional and old Irish song.

Sang beautifully by the elegant,
eloquent Loah.

And I know there'd be nobody more
perfect than Loah to open

this gorgeous show tonight.

We are gathered here together in
Dublin in Saint Steven's Church,

We called it the Pepper Cannister,
to celebrate our love of music,

our poetry, our storytelling,
our spoken word.

And celebrate everything,
not just a Christian Christmas

but an inclusive Christmas.
We have celebrated this time for

thousands of years.

And I want to encapture the true
spirit of this time

in all its simplicity,
in all its glory.

It's really a time of community,
of caring and sharing

and looking after those of
the community that need it most.

One thing that Grafton Street in
Dublin is synonymous with

is the Christmas Eve busk,

where some of our greatest musicians
join together

to raise spirits, raise awareness

and raise much needed funds for
the Simon Community.

Now, the main man responsible for
the Christmas Eve busk

is my gorgeous friend. He's the most
amazing songwriter,

singer, actor, new daddy

and has the most glorious spirit of
almost anyone I've ever known.

He's true heart, he's gonna reach
into your chest and

pull your heart out any minute.

And he's going to be joined here
with- Glen, I'd like you to

introduce the song and who's singing
it with you.

Thanks Imelda. Well, I'm gonna sing
a song of mine called High Hope.

And I remember seeing Paddy Finnigan
here next to me

I remember seeing him busking
a song of mine,

Falling Slowly on Grafton Street,
about two years ago.

I was going through a really rough
part of my life when I was busking

around the side of
Steven's grand shopping centre.

I was singing Falling Slowly,
and a woman was recordin' me

And during the whole thing she came
up and threw money into my case.

I was knocked out by his version

because it was just so much better
than my own.

And I was like, wow, you know when
you see a busker

and you're just like,
that is amazing

and we went up and spoke for
a second

and amazing, I hadn't seen him
since. I spotted him in

the audience and so, I asked him
does he know this song,

and he said he sung it today.
The serendipity is here so...

We'll try singing it together.

To be quite frank, drink and drugs
kinda took over my life.

I've been playing music in pubs
and different settings

on Grafton Street, Hender Street

as long as I can remember since when
I was 16, 17. Kind of got lost

in the madness of it a little bit,
you know, lost my way.

On the 28th December last year
I decided to go get help.

A fellow reached out to me and he
got me in with the Simon Community

and they've been a massive help
in my life.

It's given me a chance to kind of,
express who I really am

without the medium of music. So I'm
not hiding behind any ego and stuff

that I would've been doing
in the past.

for 12 years so I've played

that song about 100 times,
but I've never played it like that

something I needed coming up to

Christmas too cos it's gonna be hard
one this year

for a lot of people
out there.

Welcome back to the Pepper Cannister
here in Dublin

I'm so honoured to have John Shane

with us tonight. And you will know
from the Dubliners,

we love the Dubliners, and we know
he's an amazing musician,

and amazing composer, and he's
a fine Lordsmith.

He's going to perform his poem,
Winter. But firstly,

he's going to play the Marina Waltz.

It's a modern day classic here
and we all know it well.

And he's joined on fiddle by Ceol,
his daughter,

By Queeva and Seamus

And Coleman on the harp.

You're gonna enjoy this.

Winter coming in across
the fields,

long shadows creeping
stubbled ground.

Harvest home, barns bulging full,

In dormant mood,
the year is turning round.

Livestock from the cold
are gathering in;

horse unharnessed;

stable-bound for rest;

Chewing the cud in vacant mood,
the cows;

In straw-strewn byre,
the warmth of bovine breath.

Winter's landscape artist
in the wind;

Busy wrapping white the idle yard.

Perched upon a bough,
a twitch of red;

A robin posing for a Christmas card.

Evening closing in,
the lamp is lit;

Children to the fire
are drawing near;

Leaning to the talk of
stock and seed;

Learning how to save another year.

At this time,

we long for those who are no longer
with us more than ever.

So I would like to pay tribute
to all of those

especially the older generations,
who seem to bring

the gorgeous Hollywood glamour
to Christmas.

And sing the songs from Nat King
Cole and Bing Crosby and...

Frank Sinatra,
to all of our Christmases.

Did you have that? We all had that.

My first song's actually a Judy
Garlen song,

taught to me by my mother.

By our late mammy. And I want to
sing this for her,

and for all of those
that we miss tonight.

One side of the potato-pits
was white with frost.

How wonderful that was,
how wonderful!

And when we put our ears to
the paling-post,

The music that came out was magical.

The light between the ricks of hay
and straw

was a hole in Heaven's

An apple tree with its
December-glinting fruit we saw.

O you, Eve,

were the world that tempted me

to eat the knowledge
that grew in clay

and death the germ within it!

Now and then I can remember
something

of the gay Garden
that was childhood’s.

Again. The tracks of cattle to
a drinking-place,

a green stone lying
sideways in a ditch,

or any common sight,
the transfigured face

of a beauty that the world
did not touch.

My father played the melodion

outside at our gate;

there were stars in the morning east

and they danced to his music.

Across the wild bogs
his melodion called

to Lennons and Callans.

As I pulled on my trousers
in a hurry

I knew some
strange thing had happened.

Outside in the cow-house my mother
made the music of milking;

the light of her stable-lamp
was a star

and the frost of Bethlehem made it
twinkle.

Where stones throw from
Grafton Street

Reglam road, The Canal Bank Walk

that Patrick Kavanagh wrote
so beautifully about.

But his childhood hometown was never
far from his heart.

for beautifully reciting

his Christmas poem,

Tony Clabby.

And he's going to recite for us his
gorgeous poem,

Awakening. Instead of bedtime
stories, dad read us

beautiful literature and poetry.
He's a great poet so this is

The Awakening

Racing, rushing,

running, pushing.

Hurrying, scurrying,

can’t stop worrying.
My eyes are fixed,

my mind is set
Things out there I must get

Pressures on,
the sweat is dripping

Oh my God, where is the time
slipping?

Bumped old lady pushing trolley

Excuse me, very very sorry

Must keep going, cant hang

The things I want will be sold out

Crowds converging, is there

Stepping swiftly past a gate

Saw bulging bundle just too late

I felt ashamed at what I
found

For I had thought so much of me

The likes of him I did not see

That was amazing, dad.
He's brilliant, isn't he?

I didn't lick it off the stones now,

Um, this next band, they're from

my hometown, my heart town.

The Liberties, inner city Dublin.

I discovered them only recently

and I was adamant and joyful
that they said yes

to being on this show tonight.

Glen the spirit tonight,

the busking, Christmas spirit,

the spirit has risen. It's rising.

But you and your support of this
busk and the Simon Community,

I know you've spoken about it before
but just give us a sprinkling more.

Well I used to volunteer at Simon
when I was 16.

Uh, 15 actually. I lied about
my age.

And I'd go into North Buckingham
street and work the late shift

with my friend Jimmy.

And I was always drawn.

Again, it's probably because I'd
experienced a little bit

in my own life. But I was always
drawn to the ones at the edge...

of life. The ones who were kind
of... kind of free of the...

you know, almost kind of free of
everything.

And the downside of that is that you
have nowhere to go.

If you stand still long enough on
any street in the world,

in any major city, on any major
shopping street in any major city,

everyone in that country will pass
you by at one point.

And Grafton street kind of had that
thing, you stood there long enough

and everyone went by. People who
were visiting Ireland,

people who were living in Ireland.
The whole country came by.

And at Christmas it's almost like
that's on steroids because

everyone's rushing to get their last
bit of shopping in.

And everyone's up on the big city
to buy their shopping.

So you get to meet a lot of people.
I got to know the shop lifters,

I got to know the pick pockets,
I got to know the ladies

who worked the hotels, I got to know
the drug squad.

And it was just because I was always
watching people passing.

Your sense, your radar goes up. You
tune into things that

you never thought you would. So, uh.

# Hanging out with the street people

they've got it down #

It was that kind of thing, you were
part of the street-Community.

And the flower sellers, they'd look
out for you and

the Hari Krishnas and watch me
sweets there at the Hari Krishna

and we'd mind their books. People
would bring their prams

and we'd mind their kids while they
went into the shops.

So we're standing there with our
guitars and some woman has left

her two kids in a pram and we were
just minding them.

(LAUGHS)
It was wonderful.

Cos you're the solid. You're the
thing that's actually

stuck on the street. You're the
thing that people can depend on

for a moment.Magic.
Magical times, yeah.

One of my favourite songs of yours
is Bird of Sorrow.

Which I believe we're going to...
