Original subtitles

What time does the competition start?

Uh... the doors open at 3:00, and the thing starts at 3:30.

It's already 3:20!

Crap! It's almost time!

Don't worry about it!

I'm up fourth anyway.

What?!

That's cutting it close!

Main Hall - Information

We're here! Just in time!

I got us programs.

Hey, thanks.

No. 11 was last year's Honorable Mention, huh?

What about the Audience Award?

I wonder if she'll be able to play well.

It looks like Mr. Kazama will be leading the judging panel.

It'll be a good chance to catch his eye.

It's like we're in a different dimension. Everyone here's like a celebrity.

I guess it's always this tense before any kind of competition.

It's starting to make me nervous!

You're not even competing.

Bye.

I gotta head this way.

O-Oh...

It's nothing.

This is your institution.

Organized by the Towa Music Competition Executive Committee

Second Annual Towa Music Competition

Second Annual Towa Music Competition

Violin - Junior High Division

Weird. It's smaller than I thought it'd be.

What were you expecting, a stadium?

I haven't felt this kind of atmosphere since the last time I came to cheer you on back in sixth grade.

The stale air.

The smell of dust.

We can grab those seats over there.

Hey, isn't that Arima?

It's Arima!

You mean Arima the pianist?

He's all grown up now.

Wasn't he the youngest winner of the Saiki Competition?

I thought he went abroad, though.

What's he doing at a violin competition?

Yo!

Check out the former child star!

The classical world sure is a small one.

You kept me in the dark on purpose, didn't you?

You knew we were gonna go see her perform!

Well...

If I'd told you beforehand, you wouldn't have shown up.

That's why I wanted to hide it from you so bad.

Is the piano really nothing but a painful memory to you now?

We will now begin the violinists' preliminary round of the Towa Music Competition, Junior High Division.

Beethoven's Violin Sonata No. 9.

The Kreutzer.

Huh? He's already asleep?!

It's been a while since I last heard a live performance.

For some reason...

I'm really starting to get goosebumps.

No one told me they were gonna play the same song over and over.

Well, it is the set piece.

And aren't you the one who dragged me here?

Still, it's a pretty big turnout, isn't it? I'm a little surprised.

This is a new major national competition that's starting to get some attention.

The sponsors are kinda strange.

Normally, the set piece in a preliminary round would be a Bach or Paganini number, played solo,

Towa Hall Information Board

but here, every performance features an accompanist.

That's pretty rare.

The winner gets the opportunity to play a Guarneri owned by the sponsors in a future recital.

Guarneri? Paganini?

He's off.

Is it just me, or does he stink?

You got this.

You got this!

Ooyama Kazuhiro \hUmena Junior High

He had quite a strong opening, but he wound up making a few mistakes.

Is he one of Mr. Satou's students?

No wonder, then.

His bowing became erratic midway through.

Guess he panicked.

Still, he's in superb company.

Chief

Judge

It's a bit raw, but the talent is certainly there.

Fine performances so far.

I couldn't agree more, Mr. Kazama!

Well, it got interesting after he messed up.

Without any more surprises, I might fall asleep.

Now then, who's next?

Hey! Kao's up next!

Hey, Watari! Wake up!

Crap, I messed up.

Kao, you look beautiful! You're the pride of Japan!

This is pretty nerve-racking.

Will my music...

reach them?

Elohim, Essaim. Elohim, Essaim.

Please give me your blessing.

So cute!

Is this...

This is the same song, right?

No question. It's the set piece, the Kreutzer.

But...

This is blasphemy!

Both the tempo and the dynamics are all over the place!

She's even ignoring the pianist and going off on her own!

She might as well be picking a fight with the composer!

It's the Kreutzer, all right, but this isn't Beethoven's anymore.

This piece...

She's made it entirely her own.

She's volatile, her personality sucks, and she leaves a terrible first impression.

And yet...

Kao, you're gorgeous!

Kaori, you're the best!

Okay, now that was stunning.

An overwhelming personality who refuses to obediently follow the composer.

Though I'm sure it's not Mr. Kazama's cup of tea.

During a serious competition, no less!

What she has is on another level.

Miyazono Kaori

Sumitani Junior High

Piano: Sakakibara Satomi

Past Accolades: N/A

How on earth is this girl not famous?

This is amazing! They're still buzzing about her!

It feels like we're at a concert!

You think she'll win?

What? Well...

It's a shame, though. A crying shame indeed.

This is a competition, after all.

She won't even place, much less win.

Too many deductions.

You don't get any points for neglecting the score.

But why? You saw how everyone loved it!

It could happen if this were a recital, but not in a competition.

But I'm sure that's not what she was after.

How can she seem so passionate while performing?

There will now be a 15-minute intermission.

Wasn't the fourth performer awesome?

Is that even allowed?

You mean Miyazono Kaori, right?

I've got her name down.

I'm already a fan!

Talk about a huge impact!

She's so cute!

Wow, Kao's the talk of the town!

She was pretty cool, to be fair.

It really was like being at a concert.

She was the only one I could stay awake for.

I can't believe you fell asleep right off the bat.

Well, I couldn't help it!

Uh... um...

U-Um... Here...

These flowers are for you.

We were so moved!

Wow, they're so pretty! Thanks!

Oh, Ms. Miyazono.

We'll be posting the results half an hour after the panel has finalized the scores.

Oh, don't worry about me.

Huh?

I don't really care about that stuff.

It's meaningless unless you come in first.

Kao!

Tsubaki!

Gotta go. Thanks for the flowers!

Sure!

And so the violinist, fresh off her performance,

comes running to meet the one who's been waiting for her.

She weaves through the crowd,

flowers in her arms.

It's like something out of a movie.

That was awesome! You were so cute!

Thanks!

I'm totally speechless!

Hey there, Friend A.

Oh, one sec.

Sure.

Hey!

What'd you think?

Huh? M-Me?

Pretty incredible, right?

W-Well...

Did you... like it?

Uh... It wasn't bad...

I've never seen anyone get flowers after a prelim.

And you don't even know them, do you?

It's not like they'd planned to give you flowers,

so for them to rush out and buy you some after hearing you play...

It must've been an unforgettable day.

That's the kind of performance you gave.

I'll take that as a yes!

Like something out of a movie.

Although I only played Friend A.

We will now be posting the names of the qualifying contestants.

All right! I see my name!

Huh? No. 8 didn't make it?

There's my name!

I'm gonna take a picture.

Music Room

Huh? Watari?

Man, you nearly gave me a heart attack.

You weren't in the nurse's office, so I came to find you, and here you are passed out on the floor!

I thought you were pushing up daisies!

Arima?!

Use this to ice the spot where you got clobbered.

Thanks.

So what's up with you ditching class and screaming bloody murder?

Nothing, really. I just had to clear my head.

Well, you seem pretty off today.

Even more spaced out than usual.

Oh, I get it.

You were thinking about a girl you like, weren't you?

Wh-Where'd that come from?

That pretty much defines the idle thoughts of adolescence, man.

Kaori must've caught you at the right time.

She was really cute up there, so I get it.

Like hell she did! Besides...

She's...

You're a supporting character.

Kao...

She likes you, Watari.

There's no way she'd ever go for me.

But that's not gonna change how you feel.

It's only natural for the girl you're crushing on to be in love with someone else.

Since she's in love, she sparkles in your eyes.

That's what makes love so irrational.

I'm starting to understand why you're such a chick magnet.

You know it. Everybody wants a piece!

But no girl sees me like that.

No way.

The girl will let you know if you've got a chance or not.

You give good advice, man.

I know, right?

Watari, you bastard!

You made Keiko cry again, didn't you?!

Ch-Chill out!

What do you mean, "chill out"?!

I was gonna ditch practice to go home with her today!

I've been neglecting her for a while, so...

I take that back. You're actually pretty awful.

Watari's right.

I'm not myself today.

I've gotta get out of here.

Before I know it,

set against a horizon of crimson clouds,

I hear that refrain against the dark curtain of my eyelids.

Over and over,

again and again.

And every time, my heart...

Everything my mother etched in me just fades away.

I want to hear it again, and yet I don't.

Just one more time.

I want to see her again,

and yet I don't.

There's a name for what I'm feeling, but I can't quite put my finger on it.

How do you describe this kind of thing in words?

Friend A.

You appear in the midst of spring.

She's wearing our school uniform.

So she really is a student here!

Stare

Stare

Stare

Stare

Stare

Stare

Stare

Stare

Stare

Stare

Stare

Wh-What are you staring at?

Stare

Stare

Stare

Stare

Stare

Stare

Stare

Stare

Stare

Stare

You were gonna sneak another creepshot, weren't you? Pervert!

I wouldn't, and I wasn't.

Liar! You're gonna spread it all over the Internet!

Seriously, I won't!

On second thought, it'll only make me explode in popularity anyway.

Someone's overconfident...

Anyway, where's Watari?

Watari?

I wanted to surprise him, so I've been lying in wait.

I was gonna ditch practice to go home with Keiko today!

Think he'll be here soon?

Nah, no sign of him at all.

Watari's...

I think he's still at practice.

Gotcha.

Then maybe I'll go take a peek at the soccer team.

What?!

It's just that they've got their summer tournament coming up, so I don't know if you should barge in on practice...

Yeah! It's probably not a good idea.

Watari's pretty nervous about it...

You've got a point.

He'd probably hate me for interrupting him.

Then I'm appointing you to take his place.
