SEAGULLS CALL

HE MOANS Stop it.

Oh, come on. No, stop.

I have to go. No, you don't.

Come on. Oh, grow up!

HE SCOFFS

SHE SIGHS

DOOR OPENS, CLOSES

SHE PANTS

MOBILE RINGS

SHE SIGHS

You've already said this.

'Hello, gorgeous. How you doing?'

Tell me you've booked your tickets, or I'm bloody well hunting you down.

Time we met face to face.

'I'm sorry, but the person you called is not available.'

CAR LOCK CHIRPS

'Not long now, though.'

I'll let you go.

'See you soon.' OK.

SHE WHIMPERS, SOBS

YELLING: No, please! Open up, you scumbag!

Sorry to bother you, but we've got two guests

saying some woman's kicking off outside the Fairmont Suite.

Mr Simmons.

SHE SOBS

CAR LOCK CHIRPS

Mr Simmons?

ENGINE STARTS

It's the manager, is everything all right?

I'm letting myself in, Mr Simmons. LOCK BEEPS

Mr Simmons?

THEY GASP

CAMERA FLASH

Room was booked in the name of Travis Simmons.

Staff say he's been a regular this past six months,

every couple of weeks.

Always the same suite, always paid in cash.

No sign of a murder weapon.

It looks like the coffee table did most of the damage.

And we've got two witnesses saying they saw a woman,

maybe late 30s, brown hair,

shouting and screaming in the hallway.

There are cameras in the lobby and in the lifts.

Pull the tapes.

See when this woman arrived, when she left.

Do we have any ID? No, nothing at all.

And there was some cash in his trouser pockets.

And there's this.

It looks like a burner to me.

OK, let's get that to Digital Forensics.

I wanna know who he was talking to.

HE SIGHS

And get a positive ID on Mr Simmons here.

Let's find out who he was.

'Hey, darling, it's me again.

'Look, I just wanted to say, I'm so lucky to have met someone like you.

'You're my soulmate, you know that?'

SHE SOBS

SHE SIGHS LIGHTLY

You're sure you're gonna be... It's.. It's OK.

I'm ready.

SHE INHALES STEADILY, EXHALES SLOWLY

Well, in that case, I've got you a possible murder victim.

Male, 30s, head trauma.

Found in a hotel room last night, no ID.

That's... very thoughtful of you (!)

You OK?

Ari?

What you got there? Ah!

Oh, nothing. Erm, just work.

And I'd better be going, I'm short-staffed again.

All right.

HORN BEEPS

Er, you might wanna consider a different parking spot.

Might wanna consider minding your own business.

All right, listen up, please.

As you know, we have our new team member joining us today. Hi.

DC Vee Wilde.

Impressive track record, and I'm very happy to welcome her on board.

Bella, I would like you to work with Vee, help her get settled in.

Be my pleasure.

OK. Travis Simmons. What have we got so far?

Ah, more than we thought we would.

It seems like two women visited Travis last night.

So, say hello to Woman A.

Green coat, red hair, shoulder-bag.

6:04pm, she enters the hotel with Travis Simmons.

We've got them on the lobby cameras coming out of the lift

and heading towards the Fairmont Suite.

She stays in there with Travis for... more than two hours.

Then she leaves at 8:17pm.

She goes into the lift...

..across the lobby...

and here she is in the street, walking away.

Now, this is where it gets weird.

Three minutes later, she changes her mind, comes back.

Except this time, the lobby cameras don't pick her up.

And she doesn't use the lifts.

Takes the stairs? Yeah, looks like it.

I mean, there's no CCTV in the stairwell or the corridors.

And... I think she knows that.

Mm. Yeah, this feels deliberate.

Like she's trying not to be seen this time.

Well, say hello to Woman B.

Brown hair, denim jacket.

She enters the hotel at 8:31pm, and up she goes to the third floor.

And this is where the disturbance happened?

Yeah, look here.

So, Mr and Mrs Tanner come out of the lift

and see her hammering on Travis's door, swearing up a storm.

They go back downstairs and let the duty manager know.

While they're doing that, Woman B leaves.

Lift to the ground floor, and out through the lobby.

Then at 8:38pm, we have the duty manager arriving.

At which point, Travis is dead.

Woman A, where's she now?

Well, she's not in the room when the duty manager goes in.

And we haven't got her leaving the hotel.

She's vanished.

I checked, and there's a fire exit at the bottom of the stairwell

that goes into a side street.

She must've gone out that way.

So, according to this timeline, they both have a window of opportunity?

So... Travis Simmons.

Er, several hits for that name, but there's nothing that matches up.

Maybe it's an alias - burner phone, cash for the room...

Maybe Travis was having himself an affair and wanted to keep it quiet.

Nick, get Digital Forensics to hurry on the burner phone.

The sooner we find out who this Travis Simmons really is,

the sooner this is going to start making sense.

All right. Thanks, everyone.

So, what are we looking for?

Well, I've got this.

What you could do is file and tag the crime scene evidence.

Do you want me to... organise the paperclips and...

sort the rubber bands by size while I'm at it?

Well, the devil's in the detail. Everything matters.

CHUCKLING: OK. Wax on, wax off. Whatever.

NOTIFICATION PINGS

I think I might have something. Let's hear it.

I was going through the evidence, er, that I was tagging,

that the search team found in the hotel room.

And they found a hotel room key in our guy's trouser pocket.

But it's for a different hotel. The Brighton Central.

Nice catch.

Nick, Travis Simmons' real name is Toby Seward.

He's a manager for a Levinson Logistics.

Can you get me his home address? Thanks.

Front desk says he was in Brighton on business.

Business? So, Levinson puts him up here on the company tab,

but Toby splashes his own cash

on a seafront suite for a special lady friend.

And he's done it before. Been going on for six months or so.

Long enough for a wife to find out...

..and maybe do something about it.

Mm.

POLICE RADIO CHATTER

What's happened here? Someone really went to town.

Did you run the plates?

Yes, Sir. It's registered to a Toby Seward.

We need to find out exactly when this happened.

Someone vandalises his car on the same night that he's killed.

PHONE BUZZES

Nick, what've you got?

So, Toby Seward's home address is in London.

He's married. His wife's name is Charlotte. Two kids.

And when I called his house, I got the babysitter,

because his wife is visiting Brighton.

'We're checking on the place that she's staying.'

SHE COUGHS

SHE SOBS

NICK: The only number in Toby's burner phone

belongs to an Emily Harton.

Turns out she works at the same company as him.

Managed to get her photo from their website.

That's Woman A from the CCTV.

Yeah, and she's visiting Brighton on business, just like Toby.

I've got a hotel reservation in her name, but she's not there.

I want someone at the hotel waiting for her.

No-one slips through the net, OK? Guys?

Er, I've been running plates

on all vehicles near the Lenore Hotel last night,

and Charlotte Seward's car was parked nearby.

So Toby's wife is our Woman B.

SHE INHALES SHARPLY

No, I was just there, and the car is gone, so...

'There's no record of that...' No, I...

Good afternoon. 'Those spaces are reserved for CID.'

Well, I am CID, so what's the problem with parking in CID spaces?

Vee? 'Was your permit displayed?'

What permit? Vee!

Thank you.

We're all conscious of increased

organised criminal gang activity in Brighton recently.

Now, in response to this,

the Chief is authorising the creation of a new OCG taskforce.

We will be creating a dedicated database

into which we will log all OCG activity.

Glenn, I want you across that.

Nick, you will be logging known players,

building up association charts

so that we can connect any new faces with the existing framework.

Any sniff of an organised crime element, and it comes to my desk.

Understood? Thank you.

Sir.

You know how stretched we are right now...

Upstairs have said that this is a priority, and they...

They're not exactly happy.

So... we're just gonna have to make space.

Look...

SOFTLY: The incident at the stadium, the situation with Sandy,

it's a lot on your plate.

If you feel the need to step back, then...

I don't feel the need.

Good. I'm just...

..concerned for your wellbeing.

I'm fine. Thanks.

All right, then.

He looked cheerful. Mm.

He's concerned for my wellbeing, apparently.

GLENN CHUCKLES Well, makes a nice change.

Tell me you've got good news. Actually, I do.

We have just picked up Toby's wife.

Cause of death was blunt trauma to the head.

There are some small signs of a struggle before that.

But we also found hair samples from two sources different to Mr Seward.

Waiting on DNA from those.

It's not the reaction I expected.

SOFTLY: Yeah.

She's in shock.

Tears come later.

I-I followed him.

I wanted him to know he was caught. I was...

CLEARS HER THROAT ..angry.

Oh, we can't afford a new kitchen, and it turns out the reason why

is Toby's blowing all his money on suites at the Lenore, so...

You waited outside the hotel for Emily Harton to leave?

I sat in the car, and I waited for her to leave.

And then I went up, and I lost it. I...

SHE INHALES SHAKILY

I banged on his door and shouted at him.

And when he opened the door...? He didn't.

And at first, I thought he was hiding in there.

You know, too scared to face the music. But then...

I don't know, I...

..I started to think maybe he'd done a runner.

Or maybe he'd gone out for a drink, and I just hadn't seen him go.

So...

..after a while, I'm just standing in the hallway,

feeling like a bloody idiot.

So I left.

How did you hurt your hand?

Ah, I, er...

I cut myself.

On broken glass. From the coffee table.

N-No, erm...

SHE CHUCKLES Just from a car.

You mean this car?

SHE EXHALES SHAKILY

It was later. I was on my way back to a friend's place,

and I-I saw it parked across the street and just...

Look, I couldn't take it out on him, so I took it out on the car instead.

It's stupid.

But you wanted to take it out on him?

I... I didn't mean that! I just...

Look, I don't know what I meant. I was angry.

I-I wanted to shout at him, scream at him.

Not kill him.

Someone else apart from Emily was definitely in that room.

I mean, look, if we can prove that it was Charlotte...

Emily Harton just came back to her hotel.

Uniform are bringing her in.

Er, boss, I was just wondering if I could sit in on the interview.

No, I think it's better if we take this one.

Maybe next time.

KNOCK ON DOOR

You wanted to see me?

Ari, come in. Sit down. This shouldn't take long.

Tell us about your treatment of Beth Dankworth.

She presented with sepsis.

I prescribed an initial IV infusion of 500mg amoxicillin.

She had an adverse reaction.

The team did everything we could. It was just terrible bad luck.

You knew the patient was allergic to this medication?

What?

No. She wasn't. There was no note.

It was clearly logged on the system.

Did you see her before prescribing?

Er, no, I...

Did you check her records before prescribing?

Yes, of-of course! But... there was no allergy recorded.

Ari, anyone can make a mistake.

It's better for you if you hold your hands up to this now,

and then we can work together... to manage it. OK?

I didn't miss it. It wasn't there.

OK, so this means we'll do a full investigation.

You're suspended pending the outcome.

Do not talk to anyone on the team about this.

Don't try to get your story straight, anything like that.

Do you understand?

ARI SIGHS

There was a conference in Seattle three years ago.

And we hooked up.

And that was it for a while.

Toby was in America, and I was in Edinburgh.

But then six months ago, he got transferred to London, and...

we picked up where we left off.

Like last night.

You met at his hotel, slept together...

And when you left... how was he?

He was fine.

He was irritated.

We were supposed to spend the whole evening together,

but I got a call from work.

The Seattle office needed me on a video conference.

He was saying, "Tell them you can't."

He wanted me to stay.

So, you had a fight? No.

I left. That's all.

And then you changed your mind and went back. What?

Yes. That's me.

And that's you again, three minutes later.

No.

I went back to my hotel.

You said he was irritated with you.

I told you we didn't fight. Well, maybe not at first.

But then you're walking away, your argument stewing in your mind.

You decide to go back and finish it.

That's not what happened. We're not saying it was deliberate.

Maybe Toby slipped, hit his head.

I mean, it's normal to panic, to run away.

I am telling you, that's not me!

OK. Run it back to where Emily Harton leaves the hotel.

Now pause it there.

What is it?

The guy with the bike in the green helmet.

Bella, can you show me the other camera from when she arrives?

But can you put it side by side?

Right, pause it there.

It's the same guy.

He's preparing to pull away from the hotel

at 8:17 and at 8:20.

The timestamps are out of sync.

Shit. So, Emily Harton leaves the hotel...

..at 8:17 and walks in this direction down the street,

and at the exact same moment...

..she appears from here and approaches the hotel

from the direction of the pub across the street.

Yeah. She was telling the truth.

It's not her.

This is someone new. This is someone else.

Someone that's disguised themselves

to look like Toby Steward's mistress

and knows exactly how to evade the hotel security cameras.

Right, so, Toby, he's in his room, but he says goodbye to Emily,

and there's a knock at the door, and...

He looks through the spyhole,

and maybe she's turned her back or turned her head away.

He notices the...

the green jacket, the red hair... and opens the door.

There wasn't two women that visited Toby in his hotel that night.

There was three.

MAN: She's through there.

Right, give me a hand. Let's get her down.

HUBBUB

We've got credit card ID from the pub on Woman C.

She was in there last night for a couple of hours.

Her name is Georgina Driver. Can you run that right now?

Yeah, get me anything you've got.

Yeah, sure, I'll hang on.

Starting to wonder how many affairs Toby was having.

Yeah, go on.

OK.

You're not gonna like this. She's a suspected suicide.

I'm sorry, sir.

What is going on? You're going to have to leave.

Not until I find out who wrote this shit.

This says he's dead! Says his name's something it isn't!

Are you people just making stuff up now?

Hey... Who's in charge?!

According to our intelligence,

Georgina Driver was an investment banker.

No parents living. They're tracing a brother in London.

PHONE BEEPS

It looks like forensics ran the DNA they had for Georgina.

It matches the hair sample and skin samples from Toby Seward...

..which means she was definitely in the room with him before he died.

She knew Toby somehow.

And she was watching him long enough to know his movements,

to know that he was seeing Emily.

Yeah. So, what are we missing here?

What did Uniform take?

A laptop, phone, ID. But not the car keys.

Roy.

That's how she got Toby to open the door.

Yeah. By preparing a disguise, staking him out.

You say Uniform took a laptop. Yeah. Maybe there's something on it.

Suicide note?

You said it yourself -

a woman scorned is the oldest motive in the book.

We just got the wrong woman.

OK, but why should Georgina be jealous of Toby and Emily?

She's not in Toby's burner. She's not in his main phone.

So how does she even know him?

Let alone well enough to want him dead.

Roy, the brother's here.

OK, er, Nick, Bobby, keep on this. There must be something.

Georgie had a great job. A great place.

Everything was good.

There's no way she'd have done this.

I know this is an intrusive thing to ask,

but what about alcohol or substance abuse?

Anything that might have... What, drugs? No.

She... She doesn't even drink. What, not at all?

She used to. Erm...

She was a bit of a wild thing, you know, when we were kids.

Georgina the party animal.

But she got her head down, went to uni.

Got a first in Economics.

And what about relationships? Was she seeing anyone?

I don't think so.

Do you, er...?

Do you know this man?

No. Sorry. Maybe someone at her work might know him.

You worked with Georgina Driver?

Yeah, I was her PA until they let her go.

Georgina was fired? Why?

She made some mistakes just recently.

It was like her mind wasn't on the job properly.

We lost a few clients because of it.

Why do you think her mind wasn't on the job?

Was it... something personal?

Something... outside of work, maybe?

Yeah. Arran, I think. Her boyfriend.

Tell me about him. He's in the Army. Overseas.

Do you know how they met?

Like, a professional network or something.

You said that Georgina's mind wasn't on her job...

She'd been seeing him for a while, and it was all fine,

but, like, a month back, it just... it just went wrong.

And she told me not to take his calls any more,

and she said that he wasn't what he seemed.

Is this him? Yeah, that's Arran.

HE SIGHS

SOFTLY: Come on. Come on.

Georgina Driver's bank statements.

She was doing pretty nicely a year ago,

but since then, transfer, transfer, transfer.

She's remortgaged her flat, too.

Money troubles, boyfriend troubles, and then she loses the job.

Find out where the money went.

Roy. Uniform just cautioned and released a bloke

who was kicking off in the Brighton Argus offices.

He was shouting that this isn't Toby Seward.

It's someone called Hans, apparently.

Do you have an address?

17A.

Down here.

DOORBELL RINGS

KNOCKING ON DOOR

Mr Brookes?

Roy.

KNOCKING ON DOOR Mr Brookes?

Jarvis. Jarvis.

DAN ON SPEAKERPHONE: 'You, cooking?

'Let me guess - you're gonna put turmeric and chilli in a stew

'and call it a day.

'You're lucky you're sexy,

'cos your cooking sounds like a disaster zone.'

Er, my dad is right here.

Hi, Dan. 'Hi, Johnny.'

DOORBELL RINGS I'll get it.

So, I take it you've been in Morocco, too, then.

'Eight months stationed there.

'We were working with rural clinics,

'training the staff, getting the local kids vaccinated.'

You're amazing.

'Seriously, I can't wait to see you.'

Something smells good. Oh, Lou's here. Er, have to go.

'I'll phone you later. Enjoy your meal.

'Love you.' I love you, too.

Get a room.

Jarvis Brookes - 47, worked as a personal trainer

at Brighton and Hove Boxing Gym.

Looks like a painkiller overdose, but we'll run tests.

Two suicides in a day? Yeah.

And both linked to Toby Seward.

The custody sergeant said that he'd calmed down

by the time they released him.

He looked almost ashamed.

Apologised for all the fuss,

said that he made a mistake about his boyfriend, Hans.

Well, he's behind on his rent and his electric.

So, money trouble again. Just like Georgina.

Gaming station, it's still on.

ROY SIGHS

So, he comes home, makes himself something to eat,

plays some games...

..and then ends it all.

Oh, let's get Vee to run a reverse image search

on Toby's face first thing tomorrow.

Georgina thought he was called Arran.

Jarvis thought he was called Hans.

Let's find out what other names he's been using.

SHE SIGHS

SHE SCOFFS

Look, this is bullshit.

I mean, Jarvis would never do something like that.

And he was on a real high lately because of Hans.

The man was in love.

How did they meet? Online gaming, would you believe?

Pinned down in some foxhole,

and they're, like, swapping life stories,

getting in each other's DMs.

Did you meet Hans? No. Well, Hans was in Germany.

Well... Jarvis, he had a little spring in his step,

said he was off to meet a friend the other day.

I figured a cheeky hook-up was on the cards.

HE GRUNTS, PADLOCK CLICKS

This is Arran Taylor, Georgina's boyfriend.

And this is Hans Weber, Jarvis's boyfriend.

Neither of them exist,

but you wouldn't be able to tell from looking online.

Both have accounts on all major social media platforms.

That photo of Hans you found at the gym...

That is actually from a corporate skiing event

that Toby Seward was at in Aspen seven years ago.

On Hans' social media, it's tagged as a holiday from last year.

Both of these guys have entire lives that someone's created for them,

all ripped from Toby Seward's online footprint.

So if Jarvis or Georgina

did an online search for their boyfriend...?

They'd find all of this, and it would look like the real thing.

I think we should concentrate our resources on this,

just really focus the search.

Yeah. Er, that's all I have, Sir.

Thank you, Vee.

So...

It looks like Toby wasn't involved at all.

This is identity theft. Oh, this is catfishing.

Someone out there using Toby's face as bait.

Our victim falls for him, thinks he's the one,

and then, when they're on the hook,

whoever's really behind it starts asking them for money.

HE SIGHS

I mean, Georgina was in a lot of debt,

and we can't trace any of those bank transfers.

So she finds the man she thinks is responsible,

sees that he's having an affair,

and it just confirms everything that she suspected.

But it's the wrong guy.

I mean, this is why we weren't able to figure out a motive.

Toby Seward was never Georgina's target.

Arran was, and Arran doesn't exist.

So Toby opens the door to some woman he's never seen before in his life,

and she's accusing him of stealing all her money

and betraying her in love.

But it gets out of hand, they struggle, he falls and then...

HE EXHALES SHARPLY

I mean, she must've been horrified at what she'd done.

If this is a catfishing scam, then whoever's behind it

could literally be anywhere with an internet connection.

Moscow, Mumbai...

But if this is a global scam...

..what are the odds that two of its victims are local to each other

and both die on the same day, and by suicide?

There's actually a charity for this.

They run a phone line you can call if you've been had,

online fraud, that kind of thing.

They have a local office which takes calls for our area.

Might be worth talking to.

Most of our staff are volunteers.

We have a helpline, and we offer support through our website, too.

There's more and more catfishing these days.

It's horrible. Tears people's lives apart.

And with AI and deepfake and all that,

sometimes, you can't even tell the difference.

Well, we just wanna know more about how it usually works.

Rupert does most of the online work.

The typical romance fraud starts by finding out about your victim.

And with everything online these days,

that means just scraping somebody's social media data,

scanning who they follow, and just building up a picture.

I mean, romance fraud is just the worst, emotionally.

I mean, you don't just lose money. You lose... trust, self-esteem.

Cos you've been played by someone you thought was the one.

That hits hard.

Did either Georgina Driver or Jarvis Brookes call the hotline here?

Well, I can check, actually.

No. Sorry.

I mean, we've had two victims of this kind of fraud in a week.

Two deaths.

Statistically, like, isn't that unusual?

Hm, sadly, I don't think it is, no.

I mean, you go a whole year without one

and then a couple turn up together.

It's just like the law of averages being lumpy, really.

Also, Brighton does get targeted, like London.

I mean, there's money here. They know that.

So, who exactly is "they"?

Teams of scammers, usually. I mean, they work in shifts.

Erm, they'll rent out a whole office block in, like,

downtown Jakarta or something.

But sometimes we do notify the local police to get them taken down,

but they just spring back up again.

The cause of death for Jarvis Brookes was opioid overdose,

which is consistent with swallowing most of a bottle of painkillers.

But...

..the active constituents were evenly distributed

throughout the GI tract.

That's strange, almost like the pills were ground down into a powder

before he swallowed them.

So, forensics took Jarvis's prints from the pill bottle?

A good clean set, right hand, on the bottle and the lid.

I think we need to pay another visit to Georgina's flat.

So, what was Georgina's height?

167. 145 to the neck.

So her feet were about there?

Yeah. That looks right.

So, if she really did kill herself,

she must've learned to levitate first.

You think it was murder?

But there was no sign of a struggle...

Yeah, there wasn't with Jarvis either.

Yeah, well, Jarvis took pills.

That's what we're supposed to think.

Clean prints, right hand, on the pill bottle and on the lid.

How you do hold a pill bottle in your right hand

and open it with the same hand?

Let's get a tox screen on Georgina

and get Digital Forensics

to take another look at the victim's devices.

See if we can find spyware or tracking software.

What, you think they're being watched?

Well, whoever did this knew exactly when she was home.

Same with Jarvis.

If you've scammed someone out of their life savings, why kill them?

Why not sit back and enjoy your winnings?

This isn't some catfisher in Mumbai,

this is a killer right here in Brighton.

Digital Forensics are saying two separate sets of files

were deleted from Georgina's laptop.

That's it. So, these, we recovered from her hard drive.

They were just dragged to the trash and deleted the normal way,

so Bobby and her team were able to get them back.

We reckon Georgina deleted these herself,

but her messages and emails are gone too,

and whoever did that did it surgically.

"Whoever did that"? So, it wasn't her?

You'd need serious computer skills to erase them that forensically.

And it looks like they were deleted after Georgina's death, not before.

Someone's covering their tracks.

DAN ON COMPUTER CALL: 'It'll be sorted soon, I promise.

'My lawyer's all over it,

'and the moment it's resolved, I can pay you back properly.'

There's no rush. 'But I hate owing you money.

'I want to be the one buying you things, not asking for help.'

Dan, please. I know it's not your fault.

Anyway, I'm happy I can help.

I don't deserve you.

'Don't say that.' It's true, though.

You help people. You're a good person.

'And you help me.

'The good news is it should be over very soon,

'and then we can be together.'

Oh, I can't wait.

Look, I'm gonna call you later, OK?

'All right.

'Love you.' Love you too.

SMACKS LIPS, CHUCKLES

EXHALES SHARPLY

GRACE: Our suicide victims were both murdered.

We ran a tox screen on Georgina Driver

and found the exact same amount of opioids in her bloodstream

that killed Jarvis Brookes.

Digital Forensics have been over the victims' devices.

Look, if there ever was any surveillance software on them,

it's long gone, along with their messages and emails.

But the killer's still made mistakes - twice.

The length of the extension cable,

and the fact that Jarvis' bottle of pills was ground down into a powder

so they could be hidden in his food.

So, what else in this picture is not adding up?

Jarvis Brookes as a victim. Exactly.

I mean, look, Georgina Driver lost 300k with Arran, right?

But you saw what Jarvis's place was like.

His life savings were 20 grand.

That would've been everything to him, though.

No, of course. Look, not saying it wasn't,

but if money's your aim and you can score 300k off Georgina,

then why bother with a little fish like Jarvis?

Maybe it wasn't about the money.

Maybe it was something else, something personal.

One of them was an investment banker in a fancy apartment,

the other was a personal trainer in a basement flat.

I mean, they're worlds apart.

Maybe now.

What about in the past?

Jarvis got into personal training about ten years ago.

Erm, before that, he was a bouncer.

He worked at the night club Under The Arches.

Yeah, and Georgina went straight into banking after uni.

I mean, she was fast-tracked. She's got no hits on the database.

She kept her nose clean. Yeah.

What was it her brother said, though? Erm...

She kept her head down at uni, but before that.

Yeah, he said before that, she ran wild for a bit as a teenager.

Call the brother.

Find out if Georgina ever went clubbing at that place,

Under The Arches.

Yeah, I know him. Jarvis.

Worked for us, oh, I dunno, about 15 years ago.

Good lad.

How comes he left?

Ah, he took himself out the business.

It was some kind of bother, court case, I think,

and he'd had enough.

He said he wanted to run a gym.

How's he doing? We're investigating his murder.

I'm sorry to hear that.

Like I said, good lad.

I hope you don't think I'm intruding, Mrs Balkwill.

Well, there's nothing wrong, is there?

Oh, no, no. Nothing at all.

In fact, I'm really only here to tell you that...

..because Sandy's no longer missing, that we're closing her case file.

And I just wanted to offer my condolences in person.

That's very good of you. Thank you.

I can't imagine how hard this must have been for you and Derek.

Well... it's all the questions.

All the things we wish we knew,

things we wish we could have helped with.

And you didn't... speak with Sandy before the end?

We wanted to, of course.

We called the hospital, but...

..she didn't want to speak to us.

I'm so sorry.

Oh, Bruno!

What are you doing over there?

Well, come on, come and say hello to Cassian.

Hello. Hello, Bruno.

Well, I, erm... I need to get back, but, er...

it was good to see you.

Mm. And you, Bruno.

Sixteen years ago, Jarvis Brookes was a bouncer

at the night club that Georgina frequented.

He is a witness in a court case.

Now, the case involved a guy named Ben Close,

who was a dealer in the club, used to deal to his friends.

Ben was 18.

One night, he spiked a girl's drink, and she wandered into traffic,

she got hit by a delivery van and ended up in a wheelchair.

The case went to trial. Ben got six years.

There were four witnesses who testified against him -

Jarvis Brookes was one of them.

He testifies that he'd seen Ben dealing several times before,

so prior behaviour.

The other witnesses were friends of the girl who got hit.

Now, their identities were redacted

because they were all minors at the time.

But one of the friends...

..was Georgina Driver. She was 16.

So out of the four witnesses who testified, what, two are now dead?

This was never just a money scam.

I think this was something personal all along.

Did we manage to get the photo yet of this Ben Close?

Yep. Just a sec.

Here it is.

What?

Is that...? Yeah. Oh, shit!

Get uniform down there. Come on!

I'm telling you, he's not here. We can't reach him.

What's his address? I don't know! We've lost everything.

All our computers are wiped. Everything's gone.

All our records, our back-ups,

even the stuff on the cloud's been erased.

We've been trying to reach Rupert.

I mean, he's so good with computers, we thought he could help,

but his phone's disconnected, and emails are just bouncing back.

Nah.

You know, maybe you should think about online dating.

Dad... come on.

I'm not like Sam. Hey...

You are super, sweetheart.

Now, you think about it. OK?

DAN: 'It won't be like this forever.'

I really do hate to keep asking. 'I'm working on it, I really am.'

BEN: I mean, they owe me, like, three months' leave now.

It's just every time, something comes up.

It's driving me crazy. 'Yeah. Me too.

'You just need to get over here. Soon.'

Yeah, tell me about it. I can't wait.

I've got a mate who works in scheduling.

I'm trying to convince him he owes me a favour.

'Well, you work hard at that, OK?'

WHISPERS: 'I'll make it worth your while.'

Damn!

AS DAN: 'Damn! It's a date, then. I'm on it.

'Look, I've gotta go.

'The medical supplies we've been waiting for have just come in.'

BEN: We need to get them out to the teams fast.

'Of course. I love you.' AS DAN: 'I love you too.'

EXHALES SHARPLY

Louise Fordwater.

This was taken 16 years ago, just before she stumbled into traffic

and was hit by a delivery van.

Our tox screen at the hospital found her system awash with ketamine.

She suffered permanent spinal cord damage as a result.

The case was taken to trial.

Now, there was four witnesses for the prosecution.

KEYBOARD CLICKS

Jarvis Brookes. Bouncer at the nightclub. Now dead.

Georgina Driver, 16 at the time.

One of a group of teenagers who went out clubbing with Louise that night.

Also now dead.

Sam Fordwater, Louise's younger sister, 15.

And Lena Cartwright, another friend.

Now, the girls were all underage.

She used to blag their way into the club regularly, apparently.

Which brings us to this man...

..Ben Close,

AKA Rupert Thomas when we met him at the Centre for Fraud Awareness.

Now, Ben was Louise Fordwater's boyfriend at the time.

He was 18. He had a couple of run-ins, a caution.

He's got a reputation for being a small-time dealer.

Now, the other teenagers testified to having seen Ben

spike Louise's drink that night with some kind of powder.

Why'd he do it, if they were together?

Well, seems like they'd had a falling out - a quarrel.

The girls who were with Louise said that he was pissed off,

like he was looking for a fight. OK.

Now, Ben Close was sentenced to six years.

When he got out, he left Brighton. Dropped off the radar.

But now he's back.

So we have to assume that Lena Cartwright

and Sam and Louise Fordwater are next on Ben's list.

We need to find them, and we need to find him.

It isn't gonna be easy. We know he's clever.

We know he's methodical.

I've just got a hit on a last-known contact.

It's Ben's dad. He still lives locally.

I ain't seen him since he got out.

He come here, he took his stuff, he buggered off.

Australia, I heard. What was he doing in Australia?

Do I look like I give a toss? He's your son, isn't he?

Maybe if you'd been there for him, shown him some interest,

things might have worked out a little bit differently.

Woulda, shoulda, coulda.

Can we talk to Ben's mother?

Not unless you've got a Ouija board.

She killed herself, right after he got sent down.

I'm sorry.

Dunno why you'd be sorry - you never knew her.

She was always mental. I couldn't deal with it.

Ben was a little mummy's boy, though.

Thick as thieves, them two.

Just pushed her over the edge...

..seeing her kid... done like that.

Anyway... she ain't my problem no more.

Well, thanks for your help.

If Ben makes contact, call us immediately.

Don't hold your breath.

'Ben's lost everything.'

This is revenge.

Yeah, he takes away their money, their hope, their self-worth,

and then stages their death to make it look like a suicide.

Georgina's laptop. "I was a bitch. I deserve this."

Remember? That wasn't a suicide note.

That was him, labelling her, blaming her.

He's justifying what he's done. PHONE BUZZES

Bella. 'Roy, we've got an update.'

Er, OK. Hang on.

OK, go ahead.

'Looks like our fourth witness, Lena Cartwright,

'might have moved abroad.

'But Sam Fordwater, the victim's sister -

'she's still here in Brighton.'

Could I ask you to turn your phone off

while we talk, please, Miss Fordwater?

It's on silent.

Turn it off completely, please.

SHE EXHALES

There's really no easy way to say this.

We think you're the victim of fraud.

A kind of online dating scam.

This man you've been seeing - Daniel?

He may not be who he says he is.

EXASPERATED: That's impossible.

I know him.

I-I've seen him a thousand times.

Is this him?

SHE SIGHS No.

SHE CHUCKLES

See, Dad? They've made a mistake.

This guy's not even close to my type.

That doesn't mean anything. It could be a different face.

Different...? This... No, this is nonsense.

Can I ask...

your sister, Louise - is she seeing anyone?

No.

Wait, you think this guy might be after Louise as well?

Well, we're just exploring all possibilities.

But why?

If it's a fraud, why both my kids?

Do you know who this guy is?

We think that... Ben Close...

..might be targeting people involved in his conviction.

SOFTLY: Little bastard.

Little bastard!

Where is he?

We're working on that.

First Louise, now he's after Sam, too?

Mr Fordwater, I understand.

But you have to let us deal with this.

It would be best if you had no more contact with this... Daniel.

And we'll need to take your phone. Why?

It's possible he's installed tracking software on it.

He may be monitoring your emails,

your bank accounts or anything that you have online.

May I? No.

No, no. Sorry.

This doesn't make any sense. It's.... It's not possible.

Sam! No, Dad, it's all rubbish.

I'll talk to her. DOOR CLOSES

Tell her not to hand over any money.

And keep an eye on her and Louise.

Most importantly, if this man gets in contact,

you must call us immediately.

Call us, Mr Fordwater.

We'll handle it. I heard you the first time.

Ben Close'd better hope we find him before that guy does.

PHONE BUZZING

Nick. 'So, Lena Cartwright was abroad in Italy,

'but she returned home about two years ago

'and later died in a hospice.'

It's just for a couple of weeks. I can get it back to you.

Sam... come on.

You know I don't have 20,000.

Not even close.

What's it for, anyway?

It's just... Dan's been having this legal problem.

His mum died, and because he's been overseas,

there's all this legal red tape getting access to the inheritance...

Sam, wait.

What about your savings? The deposit money?

OK. You know what? Don't worry about it. OK?

I shouldn't have asked.

Did you already give him money?

Sam, talk to me. How much money did you give him?

SAM SCOFFS

He's absolutely gonna get it back to me, Lou.

Like, six months ago, I gave him 10,000 for the lawyers,

and he paid it straight back, with interest.

I told him no, but he wasn't having it.

He hates being in debt.

It's just, if he doesn't get it, he won't be able to... OK, stop.

You've met Dan, right?

We talk all the time. I mean...

you've met him face to face?

In person?

He's...

He's gonna be here any day, when he gets leave.

You gave all your money to a bloke you've never met?

SCOFFS

You know what? I shouldn't have asked.

Yeah, I should've...

I should've known you wouldn't understand.

What's that supposed to mean?

So, last contact the Australian authorities had

with Ben Close was 18 months ago.

He's quiet as a mouse for years.

And then Lena comes home, and suddenly he's back in Britain,

looking for revenge?

Yeah, that doesn't feel like a coincidence.

I wanna know everything there is to know about Lena Cartwright.

Yeah, the Aussies also gave us a recent photo of Ben as well.

And it matches up with a passport,

used to enter the UK 18 months ago,

in the name of Edward Stower.

It's clearly a fake, but a really good one. OK.

We know he was tracking his victims.

So there must be software on their phones.

What if that software links to a physical location?

Yeah, well, that could be why he's erased it all.

And what about Toby?

His death was a spur-of-the-moment accident.

Ben couldn't have seen that coming.

BELLA: Toby was important to him, too.

The face he was using for Georgina and Jarvis.

Wouldn't he have been monitoring him, too?

We've got Toby's phone in the evidence room.

If he did put spyware on the phone, couldn't he have erased it remotely?

It's switched off, in a metal evidence locker.

He couldn't possibly get a signal in there.

DOOR OPENS, CLOSES

The money you've been saving up...

..the money for your own place...

How much of it did you give him?

They've made a mistake, Dad.

Dan's real.

He loves me.

LAPTOP CHIMES

CHIMING CONTINUES

Hey.

I was starting to think you'd forgotten about me.

Sorry.

But I think I can make it up to you. I've got a surprise.

Oh, yeah? My leave came through.

I'm in Britain. And my lawyers say we're sorted.

What?!

In a couple of weeks at the most,

I can get you all the money back, plus interest, OK?

You don't need to do that. I do!

You've changed my life. I want to change yours, too.

I just need to pay the lawyers for the work,

and they can release all the funds.

I know it's a lot to ask, but...

did you have any luck with the 20,000?

I'm kind of... low on funds.

I shouldn't have asked. No, no. No, it's fine.

I do have access to my dad's account, so...

as long as we pay him back, it'll be fine.

You know what?

We could meet up.

Get the money stuff done with and have some actual fun together.

Yeah, that would be... so cool.

Like, when are you thinking?

Well, how about this evening?

I know the perfect place.

This little cottage, in the middle of nature.

All to ourselves.

I'll send you the location. What do you think?

I think, yeah! GIGGLES

I'll bring the money.

GRACE: I want you to visit the hospice where Lena stayed.

Did she have any contact with Ben Close?

Did she do something, give him something,

say something that might have set him off?

OK.

There's something I'm just not getting.

What?

Revenge on the witnesses.

Ben Close served his time in prison for what he did.

Then when he got out, he moved far away from here

and started again.

But then, one day, he just...

wakes up and chooses revenge.

That's the part that I don't understand.

They did put him in jail. He deserved it, he was guilty.

Why not just suck it up, get on with your life?

Something triggered his return.

Boss. We're ready.

BOBBY: 'You were right.'

Toby Seward's phone is packed with spyware.

Location services, eavesdropping, the works.

Can we use it to trace Ben?

I can get you a location.

The thing is, when I do, it's likely to show up on his system.

Right, so he'll know we're on to him?

If we don't, we'll never find him.

Do it.

Armed response unit to lockup one-one-four

at Hollingbourne Industrial Estate.

SIRENS BLARE

OFFICERS SHOUT: Armed police! Armed police!

Police! Show yourself!

Armed police!

Clear! Clear!

Clear! All clear!

Shit!

BOBBY: Running password generator now.

I'm in.

Texts, data, it's all here.

That's to Sam Fordwater.

"See you at five o'clock. Here's the place. Can't wait."

There's a map pin. It's in the middle of nowhere.

Five o'clock? That gives us less than 30 minutes.

Did she reply? Erm...

"On my way. Love you."

'We need to call her.'

If we warn her off, Ben will know we're on to him.

He'll vanish. We'll never catch him.

Roy, we can't get there in time.

He's gonna kill her.

VOICEMAIL: 'I'm sorry, but the person you called is not available.'

No.

SIRENS BLARE

How far out are we? Ten minutes, at least.

CREAKING

SAM: Dan?

I'm in here!

I've got the money.

I'm waiting for you.

BEN COUGHS, SPLUTTERS

SIRENS WAILING

Remember, there's a civilian in place.

Go in fast and silent, or we'll have a hostage situation.

Where's my daughter's money?

Hm?

DOORBELL RINGS

Sam! You have to help me. I don't know what to do!

Dad's taken my car.

I think he's gonna kill him. Slow down.

SHAKILY: It's Dad - he's gone after Daniel.

He's... He's not Daniel. Not really.

It's Ben. He's come back.

Sam, come in. Thank you.

'When Lena arrived, she was upset.'

She kept saying she needed to tell the truth.

Tell the truth about what? I don't know. She wouldn't tell me.

All I know is, she said she didn't wanna die with it on her conscience.

PUNCHES LANDING, GRUNTING

After what you did to Louise, you little shit...

well, now you're coming for Sam, too?

What is wrong with you?

BEN CHUCKLES

Mate...

you don't know the half of it.

JOHNNY GRUNTS

OFFICERS SHOUT: Armed police! Armed police!

Get down on the ground! Do it!

Medic! Medic!

Jesus.

Where's Sam? Where is she? JOHNNY: She's not here.

Get him up.

JOHNNY GRUNTS

Mr Fordwater, I'm gonna have to take you into custody.

Boss? Just got a call from Digital Forensics.

They're saying that something on the laptop

we found at Ben's place doesn't add up.

Some of the messages that Ben sent to Sam Fordwater

are timestamped at the exact same time

he was supposed to be at Georgina's place killing her.

We also found remote access software on all of his machines,

which would allow someone else to control it.

There's someone else involved here.

This thing Lena wanted to get off her chest -

it got resolved, right? Yeah.

When she'd been here about a week, she had a visitor.

They talked for an hour or more.

Afterwards, she was a different person.

Like... what was eating her up was gone at last.

I'm guessing this was the man who visited her?

No. No, I... I don't know him.

It was a woman that came. A woman in a wheelchair.

Grace. 'Boss, Lena Cartwright made a deathbed confession.'

But it wasn't to Ben, it was to Louise Fordwater.

Get uniform to the Fordwater house now.

What? What's happened?

What's happened to Sam?! Get him out of here!

SAM COUGHS LIGHTLY

You're the best.

What's this?

The easy way out.

What?

Doesn't hurt. You go to sleep.

Or...

we can start telling the truth.

What you did to me.

What you did to Ben.

It all comes out.

I make it all public.

And your life won't be worth living a day longer in any case.

Either way, you lose everything.

Just like I did.

Your choice.

I can wait.

Lena Cartwright said something to Louise before she died,

something that brought Ben back from Australia

and set him and Louise on a path of revenge.

Now, we seek revenge when we are wronged.

What, so he didn't do it? I think they set him up.

And Lena finally confessed.

Uniform say Sam Fordwater's not at her house.

We were sisters. We... We should've been friends.

Why did you hate me so much? I didn't hate you!

Well, you hated that I was clever. You hated that Dad liked me more.

You hated that Ben loved me. So... you went and burned it all down.

No, I didn't do anything.

Lena told me the truth.

She was lying. She filmed it, Sam.

MUSIC ON VIDEO BLARES

SAM ON VIDEO: 'You know what would be funny, though?

'Ah! It's gonna loosen her up a bit.'

'OK, go. Go, go, go.' 'Yeah?'

'A taste of her boyfriend's medicine!

'Oh, sugar. That is a lot. Whoops.

'She won't notice. It'll be fine.'

TEARFULLY: I didn't mean it.

It was a laugh.

And then it went wrong. And I ended up like this.

And instead of owning up, admitting what you did...

..you lied.

You and your bitch friends.

You lied, and you blamed the one person I really loved!

I was scared!

So you tore apart two lives instead of just one?

SHAKILY: Mine and Ben's.

You know...

..his mum killed herself because of this.

Stop. That's what your bit of fun did.

Well...

..our turn now.

You can't be serious?

MOCKINGLY: "Oh, Dan, you're such a good person.

"I don't deserve you.

"Now, please, go and pump more medicine

"into those poor orphans, so I can believe I landed a hero."

LOUISE LAUGHS

You were so easy to fool.

And now look where you are.

Life ruined.

Boyfriend gone.

It doesn't feel good, does it?

I'm getting bored.

Time to choose.

SOFTLY: Sorry.

I'm so sorry.

I was a coward. It's too late.

CRASH

Police!

Louise Fordwater, I'm arresting you

for conspiracy to murder Georgina Driver and Jarvis Brookes.

Lena Cartwright gave you this?

'Watered down.' GIGGLING ON VIDEO

'Georgina, don't tell her. Promise?' GEORGINA ON VIDEO: 'Yeah.'

Samantha Fordwater...

I'm arresting you on suspicion

of maliciously administering an illegal substance,

so as to inflict grievous bodily harm,

and for perverting the course of justice.

You should've taken the pills.

SIREN WAILING DISTANTLY

Roy said you had an impressive track record.

I'm guessing a bit of a star in your old posting?

Yeah, I suppose.

Well, everyone here was top of their game back in uniform.

That's why they're here. But we shine best as a team.

Look, you're gonna do just fine, but let's sort the basics first -

where you can go to the toilet and where you're allowed to park.

That sort of thing.

Little things matter. That's right.

Now, do me a favour.

Pop that on your windscreen.

Well, you can't save the world if your car's impounded.

Right. Cheers.

HE SIGHS

CHILDREN PLAYING UPSTAIRS

Hey.

I was starting to get worried you were dodging my calls or something.

What is it? What's wrong?

I'm being investigated for negligence.

For negligence?

Ari, what happened?

I gave medicine to a patient, and they were allergic.

They died.

Jesus.

I'm sorry I didn't pick up. I didn't know how to tell you.

I've been suspended.

But... y-you didn't know that they were allergic?

The hospital says it's there on the record.

Well, you checked that, right? It was really busy.

We were run ragged.

I'm sure I checked.

At least, I think I did.

Right, a-are you sure, o-or you think?

Jesus, Ari.

That's no good.

I mean, you need to be certain. OK, look at me.

Think back, right? Step by step.

I told you. They're investigating me.

So don't worry, YOU don't have to.

I didn't... Ari...

Please, look... Ari, listen, I'm trying to help you!

HE SIGHS

What is it?

That... is sea glass.

Once upon a time, it was a piece of a broken bottle.

Lot's of different colours, if you look.

That's cool.

You all right?

Who's Cassian? Cassian?

Just someone I work with. Why?

He was at the park with... with Grandma.

He was asking about Mum. He said he was sorry.

But he wasn't.

What? He wasn't sorry.

Not really.

Bruno?
