[The Demon Hunter's Romance]

[Episode 4]

Manniang?

You recognized me?

My name is Chi Xue.

We've met before.

What are you doing in Guangping City?

Did your brother marry a demon again?

Let's go.

[Tianji]

That's all.

Come, come.

Have some water.

Would you like some tea?

No need to trouble yourself.

I'm not thirsty.

That's good.

We don't have tea anyway.

So, you suspect...

your father is still alive?

Yes.

Have you told your family?

I have.

But no one believed me.

I came to you

because I had no choice.

You believe me, right?

Was there anything unusual about the body?

No.

The officials examined the body.

But it could be fake, you know.

Maybe my father was captured by a demon.

He might still be alive,

right?

Perhaps.

Do you have any other clues?

Yes.

There are two mirrors.

One was found

in my father's room,

and the other was at the fire scene.

What's with these mirrors?

What's unusual about them?

When I first found them,

they didn't show any reflections.

But by the next day, they were back to normal.

The reason I came to find you

is that I hope you can accompany me

back to Nanyang City

to help me investigate

the truth behind my father's disappearance.

No.

Why?

I have other things to do.

I can't leave for now.

You should leave

Guangping as soon as possible.

I'm not leaving.

No one believes me.

Now, no one can help me

except you.

Do you have money?

We demon hunters

charge for our services.

I have money.

Here.

This isn't enough.

There are 60 to 70 taels of silver in here.

Demons

are mostly vicious and cunning,

possessing demonic powers.

They're very dangerous.

I have to risk my life doing this job.

Do you think this small amount of money

is worth me risking my life for?

But weren't you…

That was because

Lord Geng from the Guangping Government

personally invited me

to help capture

the throat-slicing bandit.

The reward was very generous.

It was different from your case.

Aren't you a demon hunter? You...

Demon hunters are still humans.

We also need to make a living,

don't we?

I'm sorry.

I can't help you with this.

You should look for someone else.

Wait a moment.

I'll give you the money.

Name your price, and I'll try to gather it.

Didn't I already tell you?

I have something to do and can't leave for now.

You clearly don't want to help me.

Chi Xue!

See them out.

Coming.

This way, please.

Alright, stop looking.

Where's the sound eel?

How did it escape?

How did I not notice?

Didn't you know the sound eel escaped?

Where are you going to find it?

The bait has already been set.

Is it hard to find it?

Physician Jiu, you're in quite a mood.

You just got home,

and now you're heading out again.

Don't tell me you're off to hunt demons again.

My Lady,

don't be discouraged.

Guangping is so big.

He's definitely not the only demon hunter here.

Let's search slowly,

and we'll surely find someone capable of saving your father.

[For Rent]

It's just a few words.

It won't take up too much

of your time.

Where did that villain go?

His behavior was suspicious,

and he attacked the officials.

I suspect he's involved in a case

and want to capture him for questioning.

He ran away.

He ran away?

Physician Jiu, why did I hear that

it was you who dragged him away?

It's been so long.

Have you gotten anything out of him?

What's his background?

What's his connection

to that throat-slitter?

Chief Constable Chu,

haven't you

always thought

I was a murderer?

Then why did you ask me?

Investigate it yourself.

Jiu Xuanye,

don't think that just because you saved my life,

I'll let you off the hook.

Chief Chu.

Chief Chu,

His Lordship is looking for you.

Xuanye,

you're angry.

You are angry.

We've already wasted too much time.

We must find

Duan Banxia as soon as possible.

We can't let the sound eel

get there first.

We are catching the sound eel.

Why should we look for Duan Banxia?

Besides, didn't you

just drive her away?

I see.

You regret it.

You want to apologize to her.

Who caught the Human-faced Owl?

You.

And who else?

Me.

And Manniang.

Oh, right.

The sound eel is a companion demon of the Human-faced Owl.

Now that the Human-faced Owl is dead,

he will naturally seek revenge for it.

But he can't beat you,

so he'll go after

Duan Banxia instead.

You finally get it.

Then why did you drive her away?

If she hadn't left,

would the sound eel show itself?

Indeed.

There aren't many inns in the city.

Let's split up and search.

Let's split up and search.

Be careful, Miss.

This corridor

connects the front and back courtyards.

The yard is spacious,

with a pleasant view,

and there are several side rooms.

If your family is large,

there's plenty of space for everyone.

Let me show you this room.

Be careful.

Come.

Come in and have a look.

How's this?

This side room is big, isn't it?

Sir,

you call this good business?

Let's be frank.

This shop is indeed not bad,

but there's dust everywhere.

It doesn't seem like it's been regularly used.

Is there something wrong with it?

No, no, no.

How could there be a problem?

Didn't I tell you?

This shop is about to close down.

So

we haven't stayed here for a while.

That's why there's a bit of dust.

Sir,

are you familiar with the owner

of the pharmacy next door?

No.

Not at all.

Because we each mind

our own business.

We have never interacted.

What's wrong, Miss?

Did you hear

some rumors?

You mustn't believe them.

They're all nonsense,

completely unfounded.

Sir,

get paper and a brush.

Let's write a contract.

I'm renting this shop.

Alright, alright, I'll go get them right away.

[Rental Agreement]

Well, ladies,

please make yourselves at home.

I'll take my leave now.

My Lady,

we're already short on money.

Why did you rent a shop?

Wouldn't it be better to just stay at an inn?

What were you thinking?

Do you think he refused to help us

just because

he wants money?

Then why is it?

If it were really about money,

he could have just given us

a specific number, right?

Besides, my family isn't poor,

and he knows that.

From my interactions with him before,

I don't think

he's a person who's driven by money.

You've only known him for a few days.

What could you possibly see?

Anyway, I feel like

there's another reason.

Could it be

that he thinks this matter

is too tricky,

and he can't handle it,

so he's not helping us?

That's possible.

So what should we do now?

Let's write a letter to Yuanzhou

and have them send us the money.

Aren't you going to write to Young Master?

If my brother finds out

I'm here,

he'll come

and drag me back right away.

Nanyang is not far from Yuanzhou.

If you send a letter home,

Young Master will find out sooner or later.

Let's just delay it as long as we can.

And then?

Then we'll find out

why he's not helping us.

[Ganshan Clinic]

Chi Xue,

have you found her?

No.

I've searched all the inns

on the east side of the city,

but I couldn't find Manniang.

Do you think

she might have been eaten by the sound eel?

Physician Jiu,

Chi Xue.

I brought some sweet cakes

and candies for you.

Blessing cakes and candy?

Why?

I just moved next door.

next door.

I just arrived in Guangping

and had nowhere to stay.

I found the inns too noisy,

but fortunately, there was a shop next door

available for rent at a good price,

so I rented it.

We'll be neighbors from now on.

We should look out for each other.

It's getting late.

I'll head back now.

Xuanye,

she's quite lucky.

My Lady,

we can change the water now.

[Zhang's Mansion]

Have you finished the interrogation?

There are more than 40 people in the whole household

who need to be interrogated.

[Wen Jian, a Chief Constable in Guangping City]

[Li Mao, a constable in Guangping City]

We're only halfway through.

How long is this going to take?

It's still early.

Just wait patiently.

Later, let's go to Kaiyuan Gambling House for a couple of rounds.

My wife said that

if I go to the gambling house again,

she'll break this leg of mine.

Then do you think

the next person passing by will be a man or a woman?

A woman.

So sure?

Want to make a bet?

What will we bet on?

Tomorrow is payday.

Let's bet on this month's salary.

You said it.

No backing out.

I'm a dog if I back out.

What are you laughing?

What happened?

There's been a murder at Zhang's Mansion.

Our people from the government office

have already sealed

both ends of the road.

No one is allowed to pass

except for government personnel.

So what?

At worst, we'll call it a draw.

No, no.

This road is the one

Mrs. Zhang takes

when buying vegetables.

She cooks for our government office,

so she's naturally considered

one of our people.

That's why I just let her pass.

She should be back

from buying vegetables by now.

Well...

It may not necessarily be her.

Not necessarily?

Don't try to weasel out of it.

Mrs. Zhang!

Mrs. Zhang!

Hurry up, hurry up.

Chief!

Don't stop there, don't!

Hurry, hurry, Chief!

Chief!

You've come just in time.

Who won?

I did.

You never learn, do you?

Who told you to come back?

Where's Madam Li?

Today,

I've been busy in the backyard all day.

I really...

Chief Constable Chu.

My Lord, I...

Where's the body?

Chief Chu.

The body is inside the room.

[Yan Li, a constable in Guangping City]

Chief.

The servants said

that the deceased wasn't someone from the mansion,

but the clothes

and jewelry she was wearing

were all Madam Zhang's.

[Guangping Government]

My Lord.

What's the situation?

When we arrived,

Madam Zhang had already disappeared.

According to the servants in the mansion,

a few days ago,

Madam Zhang suddenly appeared radiant,

as if she had become

ten years younger overnight.

The servants were surprised,

but they all assumed she had used

some sort of beauty remedy,

so they didn't make a fuss.

Last night, Zhang's Mansion

hosted guests, and during the banquet,

Madam Zhang suddenly felt dizzy

and went to her room to rest.

Since then,

she never left the room again.

[Geng Zhen, Prefectural Governor of Guangping]

However, what's strange is that

we found the body of a woman

in her bedroom, appearing to be

in her seventies or eighties.

The deceased was not someone from the mansion,

but the clothes and jewelry she was wearing

were all Madam Zhang's.

This situation is a bit suspicious.

Youhuang.

Yes.

What's your opinion?

I humbly speculate

that someone sneaked into the mansion

and abducted Madam Zhang.

As for the body,

I don't have any clues for now.

Wen Jian,

My Lord.

What do you think?

I...

I completely agree

with Chief Constable Chu's opinion.

Madam Zhang is an official's wife

of noble status.

We must not be careless.

We must investigate thoroughly

and solve the case as soon as possible.

Yes.

It's raining so heavily.

I was planning to go out and take a walk.

My Lady,

I've already sent the letter back.

It will take about 7 to 8 days to arrive.

That means we'll have to wait

at least half a month

to receive the money

sent from home.

How much did you

ask them to send?

Two hundred taels of silver.

Two hundred taels?

Is he worth that much?

Do you think capable demon hunters

are just found everywhere?

Well, we don't know

if he's really that capable.

But when I first heard you talk about him,

I thought he was an old master

with a white beard.

I didn't expect him to be so young.

What a heavy rain!

Did you get wet?

No.

Hurry, pay your respects.

[Ji Li, Dancer in Yunmen Dance Troupe]

[Xu Zhizhi, Dancer in Yunmen Dance Troupe]

Can you accompany me to offer a lamp?

I'm sorry, I'm sorry.

-Did you get burned? -My Lady.

My Lady, are you alright?

I'm fine.

I got your shoes dirty.

I'm so sorry.

It's alright.

Thank you for catching me.

Otherwise, I would have fallen.

This lamp

must stay lit for three days and nights without going out.

If it goes out, it won't be effective.

It went out!

It's okay, it's okay.

We haven't offered it yet.

I'll get you another one.

But if it goes out, it won't be effective!

What won't be effective?

Don't you know?

The Bodhisattva at Fa'en Temple is very powerful.

As long as you offer a lamp in front of the Buddha

and keep it lit for three days and nights,

any wish you make

will come true.

Really?

Then I'll go offer one too,

My Lady.

Miss, are you from out of town?

How did you know?

I took a guess.

My name is Xu Zhizhi,

and this is Sister Ji Li.

We're from Yunmen Dance Troupe.

If you have time,

you can come and watch our performance.

Okay.

What's your name?

My surname is Duan. I'm Duan Banxia.

What a nice name.

How so?

It just sounds quite full.

Full?

Well, in summer,

there are plenty of fruits and vegetables.

And pears to eat too.

Right.

On our way here,

we bought some pears.

Sister Ji Li doesn't like pears.

It smells so good.

But I can't eat them either.

I want to lose weight.

I'm offering the lamp to get slimmer.

Next time you see me,

don't fail to recognize me

because I'm thinner.

Xuanye,

it has been so long and they still haven't come out.

Could they have been eaten by the sound eel?

No.

Why?

Is it because the sound eel believes in Buddhism

and wouldn't kill inside a temple?

There's a snake!

The rain has stopped.

Where do you live?

On Sifang Street, Changping Alley.

I know that area.

There was a murder case there before,

right?

Sister Ji Li, was it there?

I don't know.

You weren't with us back then.

What murder case?

You don't know?

Six years ago,

a murder case happened

in Changping Alley on Sifang Street.

The youngest son of a family

killed his parents, older brother,

and even three people

who were working for them.

It was quite a sensation at the time.

Why did he do it?

I heard it was because his parents were biased

and planned to leave all the inheritance to the older son.

So the younger son, in a fit of rage,

killed the whole family.

Since then,

the feng shui there hasn't been good.

No one wants to go there anymore.

Over time,

businesses couldn't run there anymore.

You said the rent was cheap earlier,

and that's the reason.

Which household was it?

I heard it's a pharmacy.

Let's go.

Which pharmacy was it?

I'm not sure about that.

Don't listen to Zhizhi's nonsense.

She's the type of person

who loves to gossip

and listens to street rumors.

Eight out of ten things

she says are false.

Don't take it to heart.

I do not!

I've lived here

for so many years.

How could I be wrong about something so big?

Anyway, if you guys

aren't short on money,

just move out.

Xuanye,

they're talking bad about you.

Let's not help them anymore.

My Lady,

could the person she was talking about

be the demon hunter next door?

His Ganshan Clinic

is a pharmacy.

I don't think it's him.

It was such a serious crime.

If it were really him,

he would have been arrested long ago.

That makes sense.

My Lady,

do you know if he has

any relatives?

Isn't the one

who's always by his side

his younger brother?

You mean Chi Xue?

He's a demon.

A demon?

What kind of demon?

A rabbit demon.

A... a rabbit?

Can a rabbit become a demon?

You didn't know?

You never told me.

But it's not important.

And you don't need to be afraid.

Chi Xue is quite nice, isn't he?

But isn't Physician Jiu

a demon hunter?

Why does he have a demon by his side?

It's so strange.

Maybe demons are divided into good and bad ones.

Ungrateful.

My Lady,

was the rabbit demon

talking about us?

What murder case?

Don't you know?

Six years ago,

a murder case happened

in Changping Alley on Sifang Street.

The youngest son of a family

killed his parents, older brother,

and even three people

who were working for them.

It was quite a sensation at the time.

I don't have any family.

If you come to Guangping,

you can find me at Ganshan Clinic in Changping Alley,

Sifang Street.

Let's do it here.

Xuanye,

this guy is really bad.

Let's just kill him.

Although he was controlled by the Human-faced Owl,

his intelligence has not yet been awakened.

He was just

a weapon

in the Human-faced Owl's hand anyway.

There's no need to completely annihilate him.

We just need to

take his primodal spirit.

Alright.

Step back a bit more.

The Moon Bugs feed on primordial spirit.

Physician Jiu.

Is something wrong?

I think I caught a cold last night.

I woke up feeling unwell today.

Aren't you a physician?

I rushed over to see you.

Come in.

The soup is boiling.

You're making mutton soup?

Don't touch it.

That soup isn't for humans.

Come here.

The other hand.

What's this?

There's nothing seriously wrong with your body.

Just go home and have a good rest.

Don't you need to prescribe any medicine?

No need.

If you're still worried,

you can go home

and have some ginger water

to sweat it out.

Okay.

Thank you, Physician Jiu.

Is there anything else?

Chi Xue isn't here?

What do you need Chi Xue for?

I just moved here,

and there isn't much in my house.

I want to buy some things from the street,

but I'm afraid I won't be able to carry everything back,

so I want to ask him for help.

Chi Xue is a demon.

I know. A rabbit demon.

I've seen it.

You're not afraid?

He's one of your people.

So he must be a good demon.

Xuanye,

did you hear

Tingzhou and me talking yesterday?

We really didn't mean to.

We just heard others discussing it,

so we talked about it for a little while.

I know

the one they were talking about definitely wasn't you.

I...

It was me.

I was the one

who killed my parents, older brother,

and the three workers.

You don't believe it?

I don't believe it.

If it really were you,

you would've been arrested by the government office long ago.

Maybe I

bribed the officials

to avoid being caught.

It was such a big case.

Not to mention whether you could

pay to cover it up,

even if it really was you who did it,

as you said,

I believe you must have

your own reasons.

Just like my father's disappearance.

Everyone says he's dead,

but I know he's not.

This world

isn't always what it

appears to be.

Many things

cannot be understood by common sense.

Also,

when I first met you,

I felt you were a good person,

a person who strangely made me want to believe in you.

So I believe

you wouldn't do anything bad.

Where are you going?

Why are you following me?

I haven't finished what I was saying.

What else do you want to say?

Well,

last time you said you charge

for your services.

But you never mentioned

how much.

And you've been to

my grandmother's residence.

It's not an ordinary household.

As long as you're willing to go back to Nanyang with me

and find my father,

I can give you as much money as you want.

Is that so?

Yes.

And didn't you say that

I have the ability to see demons?

This is a one-in-ten-thousand gift.

I can help you.

It'll definitely make things easier.

You help me?

Have you been to Guangping before?

Yes, I have.

When I was little,

my father worked at the government office

in Guangping.

We moved away

after my mother passed.

So you're quite familiar with Guangping.

Not really.

It was when I was a kid.

That's perfect.

You can take a closer look now.

Come.

Guangping has been the capital for three dynasties.

People have been living here

since the Shang and Zhou dynasties,

and it has been thousands of years.

It really is bustling.

Yes,

it really is bustling.

Didn't you say

you have a one-in-ten-thousand gift?

Come,

take a good look.

Tell me which ones are humans

and which ones are demons

on this street. Are you okay?

Help!

Help!

Help!

Xuanye!

[This area is dangerous. Civilians are forbidden to enter]

Xuanye!

Xuanye!

Are you alright?

This area is off-limits.

Why are you here?

I saw there weren't many people here,

so I thought I'd come to catch some fish.

Catch fish?

Do you know

how dangerous this place is?

This river connects to the Underground City,

where humans and demons are mixed together.

It's extremely dangerous.

If you had been swept into

the Underground City by the river just now

and caught by demons,

you'd never have come back.

Kind sir, you're lying.

Our teacher said

there are no demons in the world.

That's because

your teacher

has never seen a demon.

Our teacher is well-learned and knowledgeable.

He can't be wrong.

You believe your teacher, huh?

Fine.

Let's go.

I'll take you to see for yourselves.

No!

No, no, no!

Scared now, aren't you?

Then don't come to

this place again.

Got it?

-Yes. -Yes.

Alright.

Go back now.

Thank you, kind sir.

Why did you follow me here?

Was what you just told those children true,

or were you just lying to them?

Do you know

what the Underground City is like?

The Underground City

is an isolated city,

discovered over a hundred years ago.

No one knows who built it

or when

it was built.

That place is remote and hard to find,

which is why many businesses,

including some

shady dealings,

are conducted there.

As you just heard,

the Underground City is a mix of humans and demons,

and it's very dangerous.

You've been talking about your father,

but that's just

your side of the story.

Whether there are demons causing trouble,

or it's just that you can't accept

the fact that your loved one is gone,

I'm not sure yet.

My father must still be alive.

If your father is in the Underground City,

would you dare to go there?

Why wouldn't I dare?

No matter what danger there is,

I must

rescue my father.

If you're willing to help me,

that would be the best.

If not,

I can't force you.

How about this?

Name your price.

You talk like you're really rich.

I really am rich.

Do you have a thousand taels?

I do.

Really?

Really.

Alright, give it to me.

How can that work?

You haven't signed the contract yet.

I never sign contracts.

If you have it, give it to me;

if not, let's part ways.

Don't be in such a rush.

Besides,

who carries a thousand taels around

all the time?

We've been walking for half a day

and haven't even had breakfast.

Let's go grab something to eat first.

Let go of me.

Come on, just come with me.

I heard the food at Yanlai Restaurant

is really good,

and they have dancing performances.

Let go of me.

Let... let go of me. Let go.

Please come in.

[Yanlai Restaurant]

Alright.

Hello,

what would you like to order?

We've never been here before.

Waiter, what do you recommend?

We have three signature dishes:

roasted camel hump, grilled lamb, and stewed bass.

What would you like to eat?

We'll have one of each,

and a pepper flatbread.

Certainly.

You're quite the spendthrift.

I'm just treating an important guest.

I'm usually very frugal.

Didn't they say they have

song and dance performances here?

Would you like to watch?

If so,

I can ask them to move us

to the first floor.

No need.

It's fine.

This place is just fine.

Hurry up, every one!

Is everyone inside ready?

Manager.

Where's Tian Rui?

Why hasn't she come out yet?

I don't know.

Tian Rui asked me to come first.

[Tian Rui, Dancer in Yunmen Dance Troupe]

She'll be here soon.

Ji Li,

what do you think

Tian Rui is using

for beauty?

It's unbelievable.

She looks like she's reversed aging overnight.

This is all over the city now.

Most of the people here tonight

are probably just here to see her.

Otherwise,

the manager wouldn't

have made you her supporting role.

What are you waiting for?

Go and hurry her up!

Yes.

There's no need to hurry me up.

Manager,

I'm ready.

We can go on stage now.

Finally.

Come on, come on.

Everyone, get moving! Come on!

Don't just stand there.

Hurry up!

-Let's go. -Let's go.

Let's get ready to begin.

Bravo!

Bravo!

Bravo!

Something's wrong.
