That's what happens when you start as a fetus.

I didn't really have mentors

'cause I was a kid in an adult world.

To be able to be that for these young artists,

I just love doing it.

that I've been given this opportunity.

I remember specifically in elementary school,

when you get those papers of

"What do you want to be when you grow up?"

I always put I wanted to be a singer.

My parents will tell you the numerous times

that I have been in our garage belting until like 4:00 a.m.

because I knew that this is what I wanted to do.

She has a CMA, Grammys.

Like, she has all of this experience,

which I was really excited to soak in.

You did Aretha last round. Yeah.

And I just thought it'd be really cool

for you to do a modern pop song.

Ariana's a musical theater girl, like, at heart,

and I just feel like it's a great vehicle

for your vocal storytelling.

Yeah! The part that, like, really resonates with me

is that aspect of self-love.

Finding things that I love about myself

is always a work in progress.

A lot of it has to do with how I view myself

and how I feel that I'm perceived by others.

Growing up, I was the only little Black kid

in the theater department and in the choir department.

Also, I wasn't really into sports.

And so being that, like, loner in the arts

wasn't the best mentally.

However, I wouldn't trade it for anything

because I wouldn't be right here.

So I really am thankful for that.

a little bit with what I want my artistry to be and my genre.

But here in the playoffs, it's kind of fun

to go back to my roots a little bit.

from Madonna to Mötley Crüe.

My music career just started with this band.

Before that, it was me singing in the shower.

I've been searching for a sense of belonging in this field.

I'm in a place in my life

where the questions start coming.

All women sort of start to feel that pressure

People are asking you these questions,

and it's like, "This is overwhelming."

Everyone is on their own journey, their own timeline.

This has been the jolt to my system

I feel like this is my chance to really show Michael

that he made the right choice by investing all that confidence

and all that faith in me.

You have an unbelievable voice.

The question now is for you to sort of believe in your gift

and to let go of everything

that's outside of what you're doing... Yeah.
