Our continuing series on living wills

took a very sad and unexpected turn today.

John Cody,
often known as "Four Eagles" Cody,

died just as he was about to deliver
his last will and testament

before his attorney and my videographer.

The videotape was to have been used
as a recorded document

and this station had intended to air
a portion of the will

on tomorrow's newscast.

But all that exists now
is Cody's last word, "Toltec,"

the meaning of which I hope to discover
and report to you in the near future.

Meanwhile, Ralph Shaw
has more on John Cody. Ralph?

[Ralph] Thank you, Mary.
John Cody was probably the best known

and most talked about citizen
in our community.

Eccentric, perhaps something
of an Indian mystic,

he was often the brunt of cruel jokes
and local gossip,

yet he maintained an air of quiet dignity
throughout his life.

He lived alone on Totem Hill.

High school pranksters
would often invade his property

and many of the kids claim they saw him
practicing magic and ancient rites

from dusk to dawn.

When asked about
the validity of such reports,

Cody admitted they were correct,

claiming there are evil days in which one
must guard the four corners of the world.

[boy] Mama, can I drive the truck?

[woman] No, now shut up and go play.

[boy] I bet Uncle Earl
would let me drive the truck.

[woman] Well, Uncle Earl is stupid,
just like your daddy.

- [boy] Where is Daddy?
- He's working on that old Indian's house.

- [boy] On Totem Hill?
- [woman] Yes, honey.

Now run along and shut up.
Your mama needs her rest.

[animal panting]

[snarling]

[boy whimpering]

[whip cracking]

[dogs barking]

Earl, have you seen David Cody yet?

No, Mr. Attorney,
the big chief hasn't arrived yet.

I suppose it is a little ripe in here.

and maintain and service and everything.

keeps giving Sammy other things to do.

a bunch of government employees.

[scoffs, mumbles]

He inherits a fortune
and then works me like a nigger,

then gives a bunch of college kids
a place to harass me.

White man broke all the other treaties
with the Indians.

Why in the hell didn't he break this one?

[David] What am I stepping in?
It seems like...

Well, nothing of this is done. Nothing.
What have you been doing?

- What do you expect?
- Not much.

That guy's about to drive me crazy.

And here comes that damn Indian again.

Ever since I've been taking care
of this place for Cody,

you've been sneaking around
like a damn cat.

It's like he's just been hoping Cody
would die so he could take over the place.

- [Girard] Hello, David.
- I'm not gonna say you're welcome, Girard.

- I think I know why you're here.
- Yes, I think you do.

Look, Girard, this land is mine now.

No more magic. No more hocus-pocus.

- This land belongs to me now.
- That's quite true, David.

But I was a very good friend
of your grandfather,

and he had some definite ideas
about this land.

Yeah, ideas that would do me no good.

Cody decided this house should go
to a bunch of old Indian mystics.

They understood
your grandfather's religion and faith.

And they lived in poverty.
This would be a luxury to them.

And they would keep away
all those evil spirits Cody believed in.

And all at no profit to me.

Your grandfather
took good care of you, David.

And when the treaty showed that
he owned most of this land around here,

- he shared with everyone.
- And for what end?

To live like a lonely hermit and practice
rituals older than white man's America.

Cody should have bought a Mercedes
and headed for Vegas.

Hell, that's what I'd have done.

[power tools whirring]

Not the most refined and eloquent of men.

But yet he speaks the truth.

[scoffs] Refined and eloquent?

What the hell?
I ought to kick his red ass.

You know,
you're a very attractive girl, Mary.

I think the girls are prettier now
than when I was a young man.

Then I get to thinking, no,
it's just harder for me to get to them.

I can't believe that you would have
any problems there, Mr. Girard.

Of course some girls might be
a little crazier about whips than others.

- You know about my whip?

- Mm-hmm.

Everybody in this county
and half the state

knows all about the heroic forest ranger

who goes out and hunts down
and corrals wild animals.

My reputation precedes me.

Station did a story on you last month.
Wasn't it a cougar?

Cougar, bear, wild dog,
it doesn't make any difference.

You track them down, use your whip
to scare them into a cage,

and then you send the caged animal
to the wildlife resources department,

all without darts, bullets
or any kind of harm to the wild animal.

You're a good reporter.

I'm just fascinated by interesting men.

[clears throat] Yeah, we should be talking
about the Toltecs, I think.

Oh, back to business. The Toltecs.

A Mexican tribe. Let's see.
They existed about a thousand years ago.

They, uh, preceded the Aztecs.

In fact, the Toltecs' gods and myths

formed the basis
for much of the Aztec religion.

And Aztec noblemen
often claimed descent from the Toltecs.

You've done your homework.

- There's still a lot I don't know.
- And?

The news department is in charge
of a community-affairs-type show.

It runs at, you know,
oddball times on Saturdays,

and I'd like to do
a short segment on Cody.

We might even be able to run
parts of it on the morning news.

It might be a nice tribute to Cody.

Could be. And I emphasize "could be."

I would show the proper respect for Cody.

I know that when he was alive
the local townspeople ridiculed him.

Maybe this is our chance
to do him justice.

- [cracks]
- [yelps]

I get their attention that way.

- [Mary chuckles]
- Yeah, I think it is working now.

You're sure? We didn't lose anything?

Uh, I... Let's see.

I think we were talking about
the eagle symbol.

Yes, eagles.

The eagles were the attendants
of the gods of the daytime power,

the sun, the light,
and the heavenly powers.

And Cody called himself "Four Eagles."

There are four cardinal points
on the compass.

And the number four is significant
in American Indian culture.

Much like the seven is significant
in Christian faith.

Now, their ritual calendar is divided
into four equal parts,

each one corresponding
with a quarter of the earth.

Even the Toltecs built four-sided columns.

The Toltecs... Why was Cody
so obsessed with the Toltecs?

They were from Mexico.

They didn't have anything
to do with his heritage.

Well, now you come to the eccentric part
of John Cody.

He and many of the elders of his tribe
believed in age-old myths or legends

that when the Toltec era ended,

one particularly brutal and outcast tribe
moved far north.

And they're said to have moved
close to this community.

But we're hundreds and hundreds
of miles from...

Don't give me a lesson in geography.

I know the difficulty of such a move.
But Cody believed the legend.

[Mary] And on this very ground,
the tribe was said to worship.

That is, they worshipped from below.

Only the Toltec sorcerers
were actually allowed

to stand on the power spot: Totem Hill.

Described as four tall,
powerful, demonic men,

they served the god
of the nocturnal skies,

who symbolized the destructive principles
of the universe:

The dark powers.

A bunch of bull.

If it's all right with David,
I'll read Cody's diary.

Might be something in there
that would help your story.

Oh, you've been
such a gracious gentlemen, Mr. Girard.

There is something you can do
for me, Ms. Dalton.

It's leather like most whips,

but the end of it is plaited
with materials

gathered from
the four corners of the world.

And it's said to have powers
of protection, even in the evil days.

was a gift from Cody to me in your story.

from you to the spirit of John Cody.

It's just I hate the thought of trying
to look for a new place next quarter.

I mean, I had so much fun in the dorms
and I'd gotten so used to it.

And it was just the best time of my life.

And I'm sorry. I refuse to commute.

I don't mean to make it sound that way.

It's just that everyone I know
got a good number.

And, of course,
I had to get a high number.

Anyway, 45 miles is too far away
to commute. I can't do that.

How'd you find out about a place
like this anyway?

Oh, yeah. It's guarded
by four Indian sorcerers.

- What?
- It doesn't... Long story, no.

- Guarded by Indian sorcerers?
- Yeah. [Laughs]

These four Toltec witch-doctor types
did some kind of magic.

Oh, yeah. "Dark powers."

They worship the dark powers.

- Ooh. Is it safe to live in?
- [both chuckle]

Well, I hear that the landlord
wants to dispel a lot of the myths,

so the rent should be low.

He really wants to get people
in there, so...

- [Beth] Boo!
- [gasps]

Hi, Tammie.

- Funny.
- I'm sorry.

after what you told me on the phone.

until Mary told me about the house.

But just think of it this way.

it doesn't seem all that bad.

so we got the big bedroom.

And you haven't even seen

took it over after the place was built.

left by the previous owner.

- Yeah.

But I've never seen them
look like this before.

- What?
- See, usually the eagles sit

on top of a skull's head
and it symbolizes good over evil.

Tammie, how do you know all this stuff?

Honey, I've heard a lot about this house.

That's why I'm not even for sure
I want to stay here.

- Hey, what'd you think?

I just wanted to come by and thank you
for telling your friends about the house.

Four of them have moved in already,

and I have another tenant
coming in this afternoon.

Hmm, you know, I was just thinking.

I'd like to get out there and maybe do
a follow-up story on the house.

Instead of admitting he was drunk,

he dreamed up this story about the fish
making so much noise, he couldn't sleep.

about your courtroom adventures.

Oh, speaking of stories.
I was just talking to David Cody,

and I was thinking about going out
to the house to do a follow-up.

Just a minute. I've got an idea.

I've never seen the records they have
at the Hall of Records on the Cody house.

It might be something interesting.

...heard you got arrested
for indecent exposure.

That's the old man.

Those were noisy fish.

It's too bad you didn't come by here
when you first started your story.

I've been keeping up on the Cody place
ever since I started working here.

Which was how long ago?

- Uh, about three months.
- Old-timer.

Well, I'm a history and mathematics major,

so I'm kind of interested in things
such as Totem Hill and local legends.

Well, you know, this is interesting,

but it doesn't really tell me
anything I don't know.

I was kind of afraid this wouldn't.

If you know where to look,
you can find some interesting information.

- Take a look at this.
- What is it?

It was filed away
with some government documents.

We've got a whole file cabinet
back there full of things

pertaining to federal investigations
concerning this county.

All this on Cody?

Do you know the story
of how he got the land?

Yes, I do.

Well, you see, after he proved
that the treaties were still enforceable...

You mean, after the federal courts
ruled in his favor.

Yes. You see,
he made a private written request

that has been all but forgotten.

- This is news to me.
- [Mary] What was it?

Well, he made a formal written request
that the land be destroyed

uprooted, graded, and that if
any archaeological artifacts were found,

they were to be turned over to the US Navy
and buried at sea.

Good heavens, what did he think
was buried there?

That's just it, see.

Cody thought that four Toltec sorcerers
had buried themselves there

several thousands of years ago.

But that would be such a great find
for American Indian historians.

Why did he want everything
dumped in the ocean?

The Toltecs believed that if they buried
themselves alive, they would...

Buried alive?

Yes, it's all in his request.

Of course, the government denied him
and turned him down.

They hushed it up
to try to keep from being embarrassed.

Anyway, about the legend.

These buried sorcerers fed on the blood
of the living in order to remain alive.

Cody didn't... He didn't believe...

That's why he practiced
all those dusk-to-dawn rituals,

to keep the Toltec sorcerers
under control.

- That explains it all.
- What?

Well, it wasn't until
after the houses were built on Totem Hill

that Cody went before the courts to get
control of the properties surrounding him.

Yeah, and that's when the government

reimbursed the contractors
and gave the house to Cody.

Of course, the contractors were glad
to get rid of the place.

Three of their workmen were listed as
missing during construction of the home.

Cody didn't think... He didn't...

Yes. He thought that
the Toltec sorcerers got them.

So my quiet, unassuming friend, John Cody,

went before the government
of the United States and demanded

that they let him have control of the land
surrounding the house and the properties.

It all belonged to him,
but he wouldn't have asked for it

if he hadn't thought he was protecting
the people that were laughing at him.

What a self-sacrificing man he was.

Suzan?

Wake up, sleepyhead!

Then I went to the library,
was gonna get some work done,

and I lost my notebook.
I don't know how I lost it in the library.

So I went to the bookstore
to get a new notebook.

I forgot my ID. They don't take your
checks without your ID at the bookstore.

Came back here, thinking that the problems
of the world were gone.

And then you found out about Craig.

So, anyway, I'm gonna go take a bath now.

the problems of the world.
