it's a chilly winter day on Long Island but not even the cold can stop me from
visiting my next destination Nassau Coliseum the site of WWE's very first
all-women's pay-per-view evolution today I'm meeting up with someone who left her
mark that night oh my god you look so stunning a pioneer in the business who's paved her own way
to the top WWE superstar Charlotte Flair I am the backbone of this division the franchise player
and I am a winner Charlotte Flair was built for the spotlight built for the grand stage
Charlotte Flair is one of WWE's biggest stars a multiple-time world champion her charisma and
natural athleticism has made her a force to be reckoned with in the industry I'm not apologizing
for being that damn good she is quite simply the queen of WWE there can only be one queen
and here we are the site of the event that propelled you to the main event at Wrestlemania
Nassau Coliseum
I'm Stephanie McMahon and I love WWE
Stephanie McMahon I'm on a quest to hear the stories behind the biggest superstars and legends
in WWE history here we go so come join me on the trip of a lifetime
October 28th 2018 the day the women of WWE past and present made history right here at Nassau Coliseum
it was the first ever all women's pay-per-view evolution but women's wrestling wasn't always what
we see today for the majority of the 90s and 2000s when women appeared on WWE TV they were mostly valued
for their looks rather than their athleticism Charlotte Flair was part of a group of women
that changed that narrative I feel like when I arrive at the arenas and I see them being set up
is when I'm the most nervous because it's like oh the calm before the storm
the storm that night was a grueling 30 minute last woman standing match against Becky Lynch
for the Smackdown Women's Championship
are you kidding me
is there like a moment in the match that stands out to you the most
so she literally tried to bury me with chairs
beside the commentary table over there so she's just throwing chairs and chairs and chairs
and the moment was like she's sitting on the ring and she's like count her out count her out
and then you see me like come to live like a demon through the chair
it's just one of one of those perfect matches
oh no it wasn't there are things that could be better but it just
fell emotionally perfect
the audience I'm pretty sure was on their feet from start to finish that night
and you could feel that you did see dads with little girls out there
you did see older younger
I love little girls like my daddy loved your daddy and I love you
like that little connection is so
it matters
and now I see little girls that don't even know
who am I
I'm like you're just Charlotte
her dad you may have heard of him
to be the man
you gotta beat the man
the legendary WWE Hall of Famer
the Nature Boy
Rick Flair
there is no one in this entire industry that is more respected than Rick Flair
the Flair name remains one of the most recognized in our business
and it's no longer Rick at the helm
how did Charlotte step out of her father's shadow and become WWE royalty
I wanted to sit down with her and talk about her journey
and how she helped change the perception of female athletes around the world
you've risen to this place that I don't know any other woman has risen to in our business
and you helped paved the way
how did you get your start in for your career personally in WWE
really the honest answer is I was just lost in life
I had gone to the Hall of Fame 2012 for the Four Horsemen
and I was sitting at dinner with my dad and my little brother Reed
and one of the producers looked at me and said
well why aren't you doing this
and I was kind of like
huh?
like I always looked at the women
you know believed in them respected them
but I never saw myself as a diva
a WWE superstar
as the glam
the show person
the athletic part yes
and Reed looked at me and was like
you can do this
do it with me
we can do this together
his dream was to be just like my dad
my dad was cool
but like
I didn't want to like be him
I was his fan
and like
oh I'm going to take my friends to the show
and like
oh look at cute boys
but like
it wasn't like
oh I want to be that
in 2012
Charlotte joined NXT
then
WWE's developmental system
and hoped for her brother
to one day join her
but one year later
Reed tragically passed away
at the age of 25
from that point forward
Charlotte was determined
to carry out her brother's dream
a dream
that became her own
you're watching your dad
you saw the women
and you know
you didn't necessarily
see yourself
fitting in
at that time
how did your perspective
shift
once you started
actually at NXT
so I know the word
destiny
is really
cliche
and corny
but when
Hunter had taken over
he had hired
a female coach
and then he had hired
other women
who just weren't
and I'm not
saying this is a bad thing
I'm just saying
their background
wasn't in modeling
or acting
or beauty queens
it was actually women
who
had started
on the independent scene
which
if you watch the show
it's
smaller companies
than WWE
and the main goal
is to make it here
like the minor leagues
minor leagues
yep
well I am
from a unique perspective
and had the opportunity
to of course
watch everything shift
because there was
a recruiting strategy
you're right
that changed
from going to
modeling agencies
and finding
you know
tens
which at one point
was the directive
yep
and not athletes
perfect storm
so I was hired
major chip on my shoulder
being Rick's daughter
like no
like I really want this
I work really hard
and then
the girls that I came up with
because of their passion
I took little pieces
from them
and started to realize
like this was the first time
in my life
that I felt like I belong
on July 17th 2013
Charlotte Flair
made her NXT television debut
with her father Rick
by her side
look at that move
putting unique spotlight
on NXT's
women's division
down to the queen
Charlotte's NXT
women's champion
NXT was growing
and just
I never looked at myself
as going
I can't do
what a man can't
I wasn't raised that way
and that's
what the women
I came up with
felt as well
so that
inner belief
that we could do things
if not as good
but better
than the men
that's why I think
I am here today
because we never had
that limiting
self-belief
that we couldn't
the women Charlotte
is referencing
were Becky Lynch
Sasha Banks
and Bailey
collectively known
as the four horsewomen
who started the spark
that forever changed
the industry
with the audience chanting
this is wrestling
this is wrestling
my god Charlotte
I remember
feeling it
you know
and I can't imagine
myself feeling it
watching it
what it felt like
to you
actually doing it
double DDT
by Charlotte
I don't know
it was such a unit
and everyone wanted
the same thing
and we all stood out
individually
and yes
of course
there was competition
between each other
but we all had
the same goal
and I think that's why
it worked so well
for me this is about
like representing
all these amazing ladies
that I train with
every single day
and they're like
all my sisters
so it's more about
just representing NXT
because I know how hard
everyone works
at the performance center
once we were given
the opportunity
at NXT
the fans took notice
and then
we just ran with it
so boy did the fans
take notice
while all of these
women's matches
were happening on NXT
and there was this
groundswell
and this movement
the same was not yet
happening on the main roster
February 23rd
2015
one of the most
pivotal nights
in the history
of women's wrestling
so it was the Bellas
and Paige
and Emma
and they were in a tag match
that lasted
all of like
four or five minutes
including entrances
and our audience
started a hashtag
give divas a chance
because divas at the time
was how we branded
our women's division
in an effort to
give them a spotlight
but it had a very
different meaning
to your point
and our fans
were specifically
calling for longer
matches
more character
development
better storylines
and that hashtag
trended worldwide
for three days
and finally
we had to take notice
on July 13th
2015
nearly two years
to the day
from Charlotte's
NXT debut
I had the privilege
of welcoming
Sasha Banks
Becky Lynch
and the queen
herself
to the main roster
of Monday Night Raw
so joining forces
with Paige
will be a woman
who was bred
for this business
Charlotte
one of the most
dominant divas
we've ever seen
at NXT
the WWE universe
got what they demanded
our divas
were being given
a chance
and they started
to steal the show
there's the bridge
into the figure eight
Charlotte wins the title
the divas division
was full of
hardworking
talented women
and was starting
to build
incredible momentum
but in order
for women's wrestling
to truly start
a new era
there needed
to be a bigger change
going forward
starting this Sunday
at Wrestlemania
you will no longer
be referred to
as divas
you will simply
be superstars
and at Wrestlemania
we will also debut
the symbol
of that evolution
the WWE
Women's
Championship
with a complete
rebrand
including a brand
new championship
and an undeniable
groundswell of success
for the first time
ever
WWE's women
took center stage
at Wrestlemania 32
at AT&T Stadium
before Wrestlemania 32
me, Sasha and Becky
were the centerpieces
I mean there was
Roman Reigns
there was Triple H
there was Shane McMahon
but we were the center
like the very center
of AT&T Stadium
you are looking live
at a record crowd
of over 100,000
for Wrestlemania
when we were given
those big opportunities
to get to Wrestlemania 32
we were ready
Charlotte on the top rope
moonsault by Charlotte
it was a matter of
okay give it to us
we know we can do it
give it to us
like we know we can
steal the show
John this is incredible
this could be the
greatest athlete
we've ever had
as a WWE
women's champion
for me I felt like
this was my
brother's dream
and we just
stole the show
at what's
the Super Bowl
of our company
what was there
was the passion
the dreams
and knowing
we were just as good
as the men
and no one could
tell us otherwise
from 32
that's when it was like
okay you're main eventing
Raw
you're main eventing
Smackdown
for the first time ever
women will step foot
inside hell
in a cell
the first ever
women's
money in the bank
ladder match
you were
leading a movement
and I think whether
you realize it or not
when we look back
in time
the women's world cup
blew away the men's
in soccer
ratings wise
there were a number
of different female
athletes
Serena Williams
right she was
at the top of her game
and I want to give
her credit
but Ronda
like the most famous
woman in the world
at that time
Ronda was
a huge game changer
even after making
history in MMA
the baddest woman
on the planet
Ronda Rousey
wanted to join
the movement
in WWE
what
oh my god
Ronda Rousey
is here
how important
do you think
it is for little girls
specifically
to see women
in powerful roles
to know it's possible
so I'm not just
saying this to get
brownie points
or anything like that
but when I was
growing up
your figure on TV
for me personally
like who I could
relate to
and what I'd want
to be like
and how you
carried yourself
was you
a intelligent
boss
mmm
it like
would be you
but having that
star figure
I think
is important
for anyone
in any industry
especially being
a woman
you know
because I feel
like women
always do
have to prove
themselves a little
more even
to this day
to have more
women like you
said
that are giving
you know
these little girls
hope
that does mean
a lot
you look
amazing
queen
oh my god
and again
it's like
remembering
that's what
it's about
and never
waver from that
and that's why
I also think
I've never
wavered
from what
I believe
like Charlotte
truly stands
for
what does
Charlotte
stand for
strong
independent
woman
WWE's women
were making
history
in every way
except one
no woman
had ever
main evented
Wrestlemania
the industry's
biggest show
of the year
on April 7th
2019
at MetLife
Stadium
Charlotte Flair
Becky Lynch
and Ronda Rousey
broke that
barrier
I thought
we could talk
about it
at ringside
but Charlotte
had other
ideas
I know
there's only
one way
you travel
and since
I wanted
to be
just like
you
oh
I have
my helicopter
waiting
your helicopter
for the show
is going to
take us
to MetLife
so we can
reenact
my entrance
oh my god
that's so cool
a history
making moment
like Wrestlemania
35
needed a history
making walkout
a throwback
to her father's
iconic arrival
at the Great
American Bash
and an entrance
befitting of a queen
a private helicopter
to MetLife Stadium
I need music
madame
thank you sir
we need music
thank you
everybody needs
a little
entry season
right
and now
apparently
it was my turn
to experience
the same
royal treatment
here we go
on your way
there
like
what was going
through your mind
in 2013
there was an interview
and I was like
I'm gonna make it
at Wrestlemania
and I think
everyone was just
kind of like
oh those are
sound bites
when I was
in the helicopter
I was like
yep
told you
it was the first
time in my life
that I had said
I was gonna do
something
and I did it
you just never know
what tomorrow
is gonna be
right place
right time
yeah
special
okay
so what happened
when you landed
the red carpet
they rolled out
the red carpet
we took off
the leather jacket
that I had made
with pearls
and they put my
robe on me
and then I just
started walking
wow
like talk about
like if you don't
believe you're a
badass
you have to
believe in this
moment
that you're a
badass
don't let the
helicopter
overshadow you
at Wrestlemania 35
Charlotte touched
down and made
her way to the
ring to make
history
this time
we went up
to a luxury box
with the bird's eye
view to talk
about that
magical night
you are looking
live in a sold
out MetLife
stadium
in the shadows
of New York
City
so how does it
feel to be back
it was a little
louder
a few more
people
I've had the
time to really
look back and
be like wow
I did that
but coming back
here because I
haven't been back
here since
Wrestlemania 35
it's like
oh we really
did sell out
this stadium
and I think
that's like
hard to grasp
for Charlotte
Flair she has
made history
for years
in WWE
tonight she's
headlining
Wrestlemania
every single
one of those
seats was
filled that
night when
Charlotte Flair
Becky Lynch
and Ronda
Rousey
main evented
Wrestlemania
Charlotte
sending Rousey
into the
barricade
Charlotte
Charlotte didn't
emerge victorious
in the ring
but that moment
transcended wrestling
not only did
WWE's women's
division evolve
Charlotte Flair
evolved herself
so I have to
ask you
I noticed
on your arm
and as your
screensaver
you have a
butterfly
what
now you're
going to
make
I got
through
the
symbolism
of
the
butterfly
Stephanie
change
growth
metamorphosis
as cliche
and corny
but like
wanting to
always evolve
and butterflies
do
why does
it make
you so
emotional
because I
feel like
I've lived
so many
lives
like
I'm not
the person
I was
here
you know
and I'm
grateful for
all the
I actually
it's just
like how
did I
get here
I know
like the
stigma
of
Charlotte
Flair
and the
character
is so
larger than
life
and of
course
she'd
have a
helicopter
and of
course
she'd
be in
a
fur coat
but like
I fought
really hard
to get
here
right
I've
heard
like a
girl
literally
say
at 31
oh
my god
I'm so
I'm so
old
what am I
gonna do
I'm like
girl
I didn't even
start till
29 and then
get into my
business in 30
like you don't
have to have
it all figured
out
and I don't
and I still
don't know
what the
future holds
I believed
at Wrestlemania
35
that I was
the main event
that Rhonda
was the main event
that Becky
was the main event
but I still
didn't have
life
figured out
God only knows
what else is
to come
more good
more good
more good
more good
but um
since you made
me tear
I got through
the whole day
without the tears
I'm sorry
I didn't mean it
but you do so
much for us
as talent
and for the
girls backstage
and the staff
and everyone
but really for
women as a
whole
and you've
always been
the queen
of WWE
yes I
I get to call
myself the queen
but you have a
king
you've always
been the queen
so
the queen
of queens
I got you
a little
something
no way
no way
this
is so
cool
yes the queen
of us queens
this is the front
oh
yep
okay you put it
on me
it's kind of
wait
no I lied
oh you'll
figure it out
oh look at that
that's so good
does it look
like it belongs
yes
well
she always wears
her invisible crown
but I wanted her
to have something
shiny
thank you
very much
oh I love it
being crowned
by the queen
of WWE
was an honor
as a mother
of three daughters
I loved taking
a trip down
memory lane
on a movement
that is so close
to my heart
and one
that wouldn't
have been possible
without Charlotte Flair
I have upgraded
since Wrestlemania 35
you were saying
this helicopter
is very different
yeah well
you know
the marble
did not marble
this is marble
did you decorate
inside your helicopter
I decorated
grey leather
teakwood
ah
that's what this is
thinking of anchorman
right now
sorry
I love lamb
leather bound books
stephanie has arrived
stephanie has arrived
I'm walking her
I'm walking her
onto the boat
Mr. Heyman sir
Paul Heyman
special counsel
to WWE superstar
Roman Reigns
he and I
go way back
it's a relationship
that has been
contentious
it's not fair
it's totally unfair
shut up
but over the years
we've made our amends
it's time for
Stephanie to admit
she married
the wrong
Paul
now
we're closer
than ever
and as Roman Reigns
esteemed wise man
Paul is just
the person
I'm looking for
today
Madam McMahon
welcome to the
Island of Relevancy
thank you for having me
thank you for coming aboard
after you
should I be a little
intimidated by the
Island of Relevancy
that would be a first
the Island of Relevancy
it's a term made popular
by Mr. Heyman
I feel like I need a machete
simply put
it means you're one of
an elite few
at the top of the business
there is only one
royal family
in professional wrestling
and nobody knows
the Island of Relevancy
better than the
Anawaii family
one of the key pieces
of the Samoan dynasty
of professional wrestling
all rise
the princess
the queen
the goddess
has arrived
oh boy
oh boy
such an introduction
hi
today
this legendary family
has invited me along
for a summit
around Miami Florida
and when they host
a family event
they do it
big
I'm Stephanie McMahon
and I love
WWE
Stephanie
McMahon
I'm on a quest
to hear the stories
behind the biggest
superstars and legends
in WWE history
here we go
so come join me
on the trip
of a lifetime
good how you doing
good how are you
good how are you
great great good to see you
good to see you
very excited to be doing this
with all of you
thank you
beautiful
now this is
what you would normally have
right
this yacht
the ship headed out
to open water
and we were underway
and after we got our sea legs
we moved things inside
I really want to thank you guys
very much for having me today
this is absolutely
unbelievably beautiful
thank you
yeah well
this is kind of how we
we do it
we gather
we break bread
you know
we share time together
we laugh together
bringing everybody together
eating a big meal
being with the bloodline
it's an awesome opportunity
to hear more
about your legacy
and your family's legacy
they call themselves
the bloodline
because this
is the latest generation
of the wrestling lineage
known as the Samoan dynasty
High Chief Peter My V
is where it starts
and then it goes
with my dad
and uncle
the wild Samoans
that's like the holy trinity
for our wrestling
from the Isle of Samoa
High Chief Peter My Via
Peter My Via
was the most popular
Samoan wrestler
of his time
he's also the grandfather
of WWE legend
and Hollywood mogul
Dwayne The Rock Johnson
the people's champ
High Chief Peter My Via
introduced the rest
of his family
into the business
starting with
Afa and Sika
better known
as the WWE
Hall of Fame tag team
the Wild Samoans
the two men
who blazed the trail
in this business
for this family
Sika's son
is Roman Reigns
one of the biggest superstars
in WWE history
Afa and Sika
went on to train
their nephews
including the colossal
former WWE champion
Yokozuna
when you think
of the champion
you've got to think
of Yokozuna
they trained Rikishi
father of the Uso twins
and Solo Sokoa
and they trained Tama
also known as
the Tonga Kid
father of Jacob Fatu
and then it just
boom right there
all the way down to
me the twins
Solo
Jacob
the Tongans
oh my goodness
Jimmy
Uso
Jey Uso
Jey Uso
is going to
Wrestlemania
he's on the attack
Solo Sokoa
Jacob Fatu
one of the most terrifying
men you've ever seen
Tama Taga
Taga Loan
the tag team champions
only four men
have held a world title
longer than Roman Reigns
have you ever seen
a champion
as dominant
it's a deep
and storied
family tree
that continues
to cultivate
this wrestling bloodline
they are indeed
the most dominant
faction
in WWE
history
today we're here
on a yacht
but
back in the day
this was always
in a backyard
around a barbecue pit
we're going to eat
it all up
let me see you
dance a little
show me your dance
this generation
of the bloodline
grew up together
in the backyard
in the ring
sometimes both at once
Roman Reigns
and the Uso twins
grew up playing
football together
in Pensacola
Florida
Jimmy and Jay
loved to tease
their younger brother
the baby of the family
solo
one thing's for sure
from the elders
to the children
food was always
something that brought
everyone together
that camaraderie
that bond
that family
sometimes we argue
together
sometimes we fight
but that's always been
kind of a common ground
for us
is the dinner table
we've been fortunate
enough to have
Uncle John
come all the way
from California
to bless us
with a beautiful
Samoan meal
so it's going to be
great
Uncle John
if you'd let us
know the menu
we'd appreciate that
sir
for sure
everybody
welcome to the
bloodline summit
I'm excited
about our menu
today
we're going to be
serving a mango
drink
it's kind of like
a refresher
it's called
and then we have
barbecue chicken
marinated
Samoan way
and then we have
some turkey tails
grilled and barbecued
we have chopped
suey that's made
with corned beef
and vegetables
we have oka
which is basically
raw fish
again with some
coconut milk
and that's for
today's menu
so malo or cheers
so right now
it'd be
it'd be
Manoia
Manoia
Manoia
cheer
yeah
as our meal
was served
I was reminded
that an emotional
connection to food
exists in every
culture
my grandmother
used to make this
I haven't seen
that in years
tarot
oh yeah
like that smell
just now
I'm like whoa
it's my meal
like Nana's house
if we're really
gonna buzz down
I think maybe
we should do it
like how grandma
and Nana
used to do it
say bless the food
bless the prayer
bow our heads
Lord Jesus thank
you very much
for waking us up
thank you for
a beautiful day
thank you for
our children
father God
thank you for
our loved ones
please let this
food be a nourishment
to our bodies
we give you praise
and we give you
thanks in Jesus name
amen
amen
come on
man
come on
man
alright
should we
dig in
what do you want
I'll have a little
bit of everything
I was excited
to try the
Samoan cuisine
it smelled so
good while we
were sitting there
yeah
how often
would you have
these barbecues
get together
yeah
it would be like
the twins
me and Jacob
and Solo
all living in the
same town
and then we just
every weekend
get together
that's what it was
like
oh really
that's great
like Sunday dinner
yeah well we
would do the ballpark
like Saturday
after a football game
and then we would
go back to the
twins house
and start barbecuing
and swim
it was numbers
like this
all surrounding
a grill
just you know
hanging out
music blasting
pool kids
playing in the pool
favorite part
about the barbecues
is when it gets
a little out of
control
you got
Wrestlemania
right in your
front yard
it was like
guys they're
doing it
come on guys
get to the
window dudes
get to the
window
royal rumble
they're working
on some stuff
there was one
part of the
feast in particular
I knew I had
to try
the turkey tail
I've honestly
got hurt about
these things
forever
yeah
I'm gonna eat
one with you
too
alright
alright
so what is
just pure fat
I think so
there's a couple
you know
there's a couple
chunks of real meat
in there
turkey tails
were a notorious
favorite of the
late great
Yokozuna
especially when
dunked in mayo
I had to try
one for myself
after hearing
all the stories
throughout these
years
only uh
let's hold
the mayo
there we go
take it
hmm
take it
take it
take it
give it a mask
what do you think
yeah
yeah
yeah
yeah
yeah
I won't be having
any more
of the turkey tail
but
it was not bad
it's just fatty
a little fatty
yeah
thank you
that was
turkey ribeye
yeah
turkey ribeye
I like that
wrestling's been
a part of the
Samoan culture
for a long time
like
how far back
does it go
why do you think
it has been
such a part of
of Samoan culture
fish to water
just fish to water
Aloha
there we see the Samoan
stump puller
and it's all over
up in Zika
double head
by the Samoan
and look at
Yokozuna
come on big boy
physically
we're bigger people
and charismatic people too
main event
Jey Uso
has the WWE fans
on their feet
Roman Reigns
has done it
again
Roman Reigns
I acknowledge you
as my tribal
chief
it's a part of our DNA
we're storytellers
because that's how
old cultures do
in order to
new generations
to know
you gotta be able
to pass these stories on
and don't nobody
wanna hear a long ass
boring story
so you have to be able
to entertain
that's kind of
what we do in WWE
it's kind of intimidating too
sure you gotta
you gotta live up
to something
right
I was amazed
to learn
that 39
of the 41
WrestleManias
included someone
with Polynesian roots
that stat
blew my mind
and how important
was it to see
yourself represented
you know
to really
give you that mindset
that it is possible
I mean
it's real life changing
man
our fathers
went through the grind
and I came
from watching them
and just
it was always
just always brought comfort
you know
just keep your head
on riding
as possible
I think it's important
man
because the
all the next generation
all the young
you know
the Polynesian kids
out there
like they do look up to us
we do have
a big following
in the
you know
Polynesian people
man
so
like I take pride
in that
it warms my heart
man
really there's a
there's a higher calling
for us man
it ain't just this
we was blessed
to do this
what do you think
your dad
would say
looking at you guys
sitting here
oh hand me another
plate of a
we've seen so many
men in our family
wrestle
it's like conditioning
why can't I do it
he did it
he did it
I'm the same blood
you got
Maga
Rikishi
Yokozuna
what's your middle name
Yokozuna
I didn't know that
until right before this
yeah
Grey Yokozuna man
Uncle Ryan
yeah true story
my dad was by the name
was Alpha and Sika
really
my mom said
you will not
name my twins
Alpha and Sika
it's easy to see
why so many
WWE fans
are drawn
to Jimmy
and Jey Uso
their little brother
Solo however
did not seem
quite so charmed
I don't think
you'll find anybody
that has a bad word
to say about these guys
really I'm not kidding
I'm not just saying
this is wrong Cameron
well maybe
you grew up
in the house of them
Solo you next
what do you guys say
about your bigger brothers
now
hey pig dog
I feel like
you're still holding
a grudge
from childhood
a little bit
he's like
just looking at them
the whole time
so all you guys
want to laugh
all you guys
want to get together
to the bloodline
chosen family
is almost as important
as biological family
and Paul Heyman
is a key member
of the bloodline's
chosen family
and so how does
the wise man
figure into all of this
how did you get involved
with the bloodline
way back
well it's kind of
it's kind of like
the same way
I hustled my way
in into your family
I was taking photographs
for your grandfather
and was too young
to make it to
towns outside
of Madison Square Garden
so I would ride
with Offa and Sika
to Allentown
and Hamburg
it was being
in the car
with Offa and Sika
and it's just
so much of the etiquette
of the industry
that I learned
so by the time
I broke in
as a manager
I'm already
now with a second
generation
of Sam Owens
I'm with
Offa's son
Big Sam
I'm with
Offa and Sika's
nephew
Rikishi
I'm in the car
with them now
and I'm managing
them
so by the time
I get to this
generation
I'm the old guy
I'm the wise man
I've been through
three generations
of this family already
bestowing wisdom
upon them
that I learned
in the car
from those
who paved the road
for them
generations ago
that's remarkable
and what about you
Sammy
how did you get
tied into the bloodline
we have been
traveling the roads
together for many years
Roman and the twins
since I came up
since I came to WWE
so that would be
2013-2014
got along famously
from the jump
and I had this idea
for a story
when I kind of asked
like hey what if you
let me hang around
you know like
I could be part of the team
I don't know
what if I joined
what if I joined up
with the bloodline
Reigns is down
Kevin Owens
for the win
and Sammy Zane
preventing the official
from counting to three
is that enough
to prove Zane's loyalty
and he is officially
accepted
into
the family
it's a part of our family
though
my dad and my uncle
a lot of our family
consider them
they're like shepherds
they always had a flock
you know
they always had
just people
that they were
mentoring
or helping
or you know
becoming chosen family
and
we've kind of
done that with you
and then Tama
and T's dad
their father
Haku
and my dad
used to tag
in the 80s
it's crazy how the world
comes back around now
kind of feel like history
like repeated itself
Tonga
and Lowa
and Fatu
yeah the business
brought them together
but you know how it goes
when you're on the road
when you're working together
you're making great money
together
it just bonds you
you know
chosen family
is the way we look at it
we got a lot of that
around here
I was surprised to learn
that even though wrestling
is an integral part
of their culture
many of the bloodline
didn't plan on joining
the family business
funny thing is
we was never pushed
to be wrestlers
we was always
don't do wrestle
try not to be hard
on your body
I can only speak for myself
but it was in my brain
that I was going to just
create my own path
and I thought football
was that route
for Roman
that path was within reach
but after playing
defensive line
for Georgia Tech
he stepped away
from football
and came home
to WWE
so it's not like
oh as soon as I'm 18
I'm going to go be a wrestler
like my dad
or whatever
that wasn't
it wasn't
it wasn't your plan
from the jump
that was my plan
but I was told no
ah there you go
ah okay
you weren't allowed
the way they would
say is
go do something
first
find something to do
and cause wrestling
will always be here
I feel like they knew
though like
we would catch on quick
my dad always wanted
me to wrestle
he always did
but at the same time
he wasn't mad
that I was good at football
he enjoyed watching me
play football
and I think he was proud
that I was good
at something else too
but I think he always
knew in his head
if this doesn't work out
I got the keys
to teach him
you know
how to drive this thing
we got a safety net
and it's no different
for our kids
and do any of your kids
right now
express interests?
Mines does
yeah he's damning
he's like dad
how old
me and you could be
like Rey Mysterio
and Don Mysterio
oh that's cool
now what about you Jacob
just my daughters
my girls
and you know
even with the women
now wrestling
you know
part of the roster
man
they're a big influence
on you know
on my girls too
who do they like the most?
man they love Tiffy time
it is Tiffy time
they love Rhea
the brash
the brazen
the bold
Rhea Ripley
Naya
Sister Tran
shout out
yeah shout out
Sister Tran
okay
just to see them
see you know
Uncle T
Tom Uncle Roman
you know
the boys
and to see
how we are together
rather than
the entertainment side
you know
it goes off
on another part
of our culture
you know
being family
orientated
so
beautiful thing
beautiful thing
well I'm so grateful
to have been
an honorary
guest here today
and you know
for you guys
sharing so much
so much of your culture
so much of your
experience
so much of your stories
because it is
all about
your story
and your journey
I'm just really grateful
after we finished up
inside
I had a chance
to talk to Roman
one on one
to reflect on the day
and his family's journey
so we had the opportunity
to talk a lot today
yeah
good conversation
great conversation
and I'd love to ask
you given everything
you've been through
both personally
and professionally
what are some of your
biggest lessons
that you've learned
try to do what you love
with the people you love
that's what I do
you know
we talked about it
in a weird way
a lot of our family
tries to create
their own path
but somehow
some way
whether it's
divine intervention
or this is just
what we're supposed
to be doing
if you're a part
of this family
we found our way
back to this business
so to be a part of it
to be a part of that
foundation
that our fathers
laid out for us
and to be able
to build on top of that
I mean there's a time
you know this very well
it wasn't glamorous
it was as blue collar
as you could ever think
if my father and uncle
saw us on this boat
right now
on this ship
doing what we're doing
they just wouldn't
understand it
how did it become this
but if I can't do it
with all my family
what's the point
of doing it
you know
I was born and raised
in a big family
and I just want
to continue that
thank you so much
thank you
you just
I really
I can't say it enough
this is such a
such an honor for me
thank you
thank you
as we headed back to shore
we all made our way
to the front of the yacht
and with the Miami skyline
in the distance
the wind nearly blowing me over
and the bloodline by my side
we took one of my most memorable selfies
capping off my trip
to the island
of relevancy
I remember a time
we went to blockbuster
and he was too young
to play the games
but Junior let him
choose the game for
and we're all just like
that's not the game
that's not the one
that's not the one
Joseph
Joseph
get this game
get this game
I want this one
I don't ever be in that
you know
I mean
guys you guys want to play with me
too bad
