I remember John Peel saying to me,
one of the last times I saw him, we played live on his show 2003,
so not long before he died.
He was just really honest.
He went, you know what, I never thought people were really going to really like Mogwai that much,
he said, erm
I always thought you would be one of these bands that just a couple of weirdos would like.
That's kind of what I always thought.
So yeah, it wasn't just John that was surprised.
Well, plan A is already pretty much,
plan Awas what we all talked about.
Going in June?
Was it not May?
May, yeah, end of May, yeah.
I guess we just wait to see where things are,
I think Plan B is record in Glasgow and get Dave to mix it.
I still might come to America,
I guess I'll probably decide nearer the time.
I mean, the tour might be after the recording,
because it might be the case where it's safe enough to record,
but like gatherings of more than 50 people might still be,
that might not happen this year, Antony.
It was a huge deal.
Back then we were really young,
I'd never been to America, I don't know if any of us had.
Dave had just come off the back of making Deserter's Songs by Mercury Rev,
which was like pretty much the album of the year.
We were in this place where all these iconic records had been made.
We were in this environment that we had never experienced,
in rural New York, just holed up.
It was just a totally new experience for us.
We were also really organised.
We'd rehearsed that album and demo-ed it, we were really, really together.
Sometimes when it's really new,
you've got to concentrate
to try and remember what you are doing next,
but I think when it's all going perfectly,
you're almost kind of lost in it.
You're not really thinking of anything
and that's probably the best that it gets to.
It's a shared experience,
and especially these days,
the pleasure of not having to think about anything,
is pretty special.
