- And so on our bottles,
we put all that information right on the side
so you can really get into the nitty-gritty
of what this bourbon is about,
what this particular distillation is all about,
and what we do to make it sort of more interesting.
Okay, so, now that we have explored the color,
let's let our noses be our guide.
So, everyone pick up your first sample,
it'll be to your left.
Good. Get a little sniff.
Short, shallow sniffs.
What are we getting?
Come on, be brave.
There are no wrong answers here.
- Kind of a burning smell.
Yeah.
- Okay, well, that is the alcohol.
So, of course, when you pour it, that comes bursting forth.
But we really wanna get to all the flavors
underneath all that.
- Yeah, I just kinda wanna drink it.
- Well, let's take our time, right?
Let's not rush things.
There's no substitute for time, right?
Like those biceps, for example,
those didn't just pop up overnight, did they?
My, can I?
Would you mind?
- Sure.
Yeah.
Okay, my, I'm sorry, what?
My point being that this bourbon has been in a barrel
for five years.
So, it's a couple more seconds in the glass.
Am I right?
Okay, this time, why don't you inhale through your mouth,
close your mouth, and exhale for your nose, right?
There you go. What are we getting?
Are we maybe
getting some vanilla, some caramel,
and then, maybe some undertones of what?
Leather, tobacco.
- Y'all put leather in it?
- We don't, it.
It takes practice.
- Yeah, I just care about how drunk it can get me.
- Yeah, let's get drunk together sometime.
- What?
- What? Nothing.
Okay, so, everyone take a sip now.
Let's have a sip, shall we?
There you go.
And you wanna coat your tongue, right?
Just a short sip.
Coat your tongue,
roll it around on there, and swallow it.
Right, the flavor should really be coming to life.
Cool, okay.
So, set that one down and pick up your second one.
And we're gonna do the same thing.
So, give it a good nosing, sip,
coat the tongue, and swallow.
- It's got more spice, more cinnamon, nutmeg.
It's not as smooth, it's not a bad thing though.
- No, it is not.
Boom, you are right on.
So, let me tell you a story about these two bourbons.
They were created at the exact same time.
They have the exact same ingredients.
They aged on the shelf for the same amount of time.
They are virtually identical in every way except for one.
What do you think it is?
Anybody?
The barrel that they aged in.
- How can they have that much in common
and taste that different?
- Every bourbon has a story.
And now I have told you just a small part
of these bourbon's stories.
Imagine what else there is that we don't even know.
For instance,
think about the tree that made this bourbon's barrel.
What happened in that tree's life that made it
so dramatically different than the tree that made
this bourbon's barrel?
We don't know. That's a part of the mystery.
That is part of what makes bourbon
America's only native spirit, by the way,
so intoxicatingly beautiful.
That and the alcohol.
There we go.
- You are beautiful.
- Huh? - You have been
a beautiful audience.
That is it for the tour.
That is it for the tasting.
And please do come back and see us again.
Would you?
- Cool. - Yeah.
Thanks, guys.
Yeah, thank you.
- Nice. See you. - No, thank you so much.
All righty. Bye now.
- Oh, and let me know when you get those
designer bottles in, okay?
- Okay, will do.
And you let me know if you ever wanna get that drink
that we talked about.
- Okay. - That I had talked about.
Okay.
- Okay. - Excuse me.
He'll be back.
- Who is that?
- He ordered some custom engraved bottles
of the new eight-year batch for his wedding.
- So, you're hitting on married men now?
- No, dude.
Future married. He's gonna get married.
It's open season until the wedding day,
according to the Chase moral code.
- Why would you want to be with someone so dense anyway?
- I don't care if his nose is broken.
As long as that D works.
You and I both know he's gonna wanna run that thing out
one last time before he straps on the old chastity belt.
Why shouldn't he run it out with Chase?
Stop talking about yourself in the third person.
You stop.
- You forgot cherries.
- You forgot cherries.
Sure enough. Cherries.
Chase, you still here?
Hi, Sarah.
- Nicholas.
- How'd you? How'd you get in?
Oh, okay.
You smell nice.
Going out tonight?
So, why?
What?
Why? Why are you here?
Because the dark side of the moon.
- Okay, okay, okay. - See what I'm saying?
- Okay, I got one.
- I got one. - Oh, you got one?
- I got one I made up. - Oh, you made it up?
- Yeah. - You didn't get it
off the internet.
- What'd I just say?
- Well, okay. - All right, so, okay.
So, this young couple moves into an apartment in Hollywood
and they find out that they can't have pets.
And so they get real bummed out, you know?
- Mm-hmm, couple no pets, bumped.
Go. - Yeah.
So, then the next-door neighbor, he overhears this.
And so he comes over and he says,
"Well, you know, it's, it's not that you can't have pets,
it's just that you can't have
little furry animals running around."
And you know, like, so you, you could have something
like in a cage.
- Is this joke going anywhere?
- Yeah, just shut up and listen.
So, oh, the neighbor says,
"I have a friend who has a pet store in Hollywood,
and he sells animals that used to work in the movies."
And so, they went down there to see him.
And turns out the guy's a nice guy, affable, funny.
And so, they get this 18-foot boa constrictor
whose name is Lee 'cause he worked on a Jet Lee movie.
- Snake's name is Lee 'cause he worked on a Jet Lee movie.
Go on. - Yeah.
So, they got home and the neighbor says,
"Well, did you meet my friend? How'd it go?"
And they said, "Oh, it went great.
We got along famously.
We got along famously."
- Yeah, along famously.
Yeah.
Funny, isn't it?
- I quit. - Oh, you wish you wrote that?
- Oh, I wish I had the last
two minutes of my life back.
But yeah,
I completely believe that you made that joke up, completely.
Oh, my God!
I forgot to tell you what happened to me.
So, last night, I'm down at the Dane
and I noticed this guy checking me out
and oh my, I mean, I looked amazing.
Who could blame him?
I was wearing this like short sequin,
little, like 1960s, whatever.
I noticed the guy looks exactly like Slash.
- Like the Guns N' Roses guitar.
- Is there another Slash?
- Oh. - There's only one.
So, yes, the hat, the hair, the glasses, the whole thing.
So, at first, I'm like, "Dude, it is not him.
Like, what would he be doing here?"
But I'm like, "Screw it, I'm going over to him anyway."
So, I did.
And I'm like, "Yo, you're not Slash, right?"
And he turns around and goes, "What if I am?"
And so, then, we like stare at each other
for a couple of seconds,
and then, he takes off his sunglasses.
Not Slash!
Just a dude from a local cover band.
- And that's the end?
- Yeah, we made out in a stairway for like 16 minutes.
But yeah, that's, that is what happened.
- I don't need much of an anecdote.
- Okay, dude.
Well, how about you?
Did you leave the distillery yesterday at all?
- Yeah, I took the trash out to the dumpster.
- If you can tell me in the next five seconds,
the last time that you left the distillery
for anything other than the store,
I will give you a week's paycheck.
5, 4, 3, 2, 1.
- I went to the dentist.
Too late and sad. So, sad.
- I had to, I had a toothache.
Mm, congratulations.
- Are you Nicholas?
- Who's asking?
- Glen-Joe.
- Hey. - What?
- Glen-Joe.
- Is that two names or one?
- I've never thought about it.
I've always just been Glen-Joe.
How do you spell it?
- G-L-E-N-J-O-E.
- Whoa, a dash. That is a twist.
- I don't have any other middle name.
- All righty, that settles.
It's two names. And you go by both.
I'm Chase, one name.
Good to meet you, Chase.
- How can we help you, Mr. Glen hyphen Joe?
- Do ya'll believe in ghosts?
- Why don't we just let him come in for like a few minutes?
- No.
- Why?
- Because it's absurd.
- How do you know?
- How do I know it's absurd?
The notion of our distillery being haunted by actual,
real-life ghosts.
Uh, let me think about that.
- Just let him come in and poke around for a couple minutes.
No.
As a favor to me.
As a favor to me. It'll be so much fun.
- Okay, you know what?
If it'll quit you from following me around
and pestering me all day long,
and you get back to work afterward, then yes, you can have.
- Victory! - One time.
You mind if I poke around?
- Oh, Jesus.
There's nothing interesting in here to look at.
It, it's, it's just, just a bunch of paperwork.
- The papers don't matter.
- No, but you, you don't really need to.
This, this room is.
Okay, stop. Stop.
That's enough, okay? That's enough.
Hope you get the data you need.
Have a good day. Best of luck to you, friend.
- I'd like to feature your distillery
on a ghost-hunting tour of Kentucky.
- Why?
- Well, supposedly, this entire block used to be an ancient.
- Indian burial ground.
- Indigenous people's burial
ground. - Indigenous people's
burial ground.
- So, you've heard?
- No, I haven't heard.
But it's the oldest story in the book.
It's, it's everything was on an old, ind, in
indigenous people's burial ground.
It's predictable. It's unoriginal.
It's made up.
- It's untrue because it's predictable.
- Ah, no, I'm not saying that's not true.
- I mean, the weather's predictable.
Oh, wait, five minutes.
- Do you believe in spirits at all?
Well, I hope you realize
that these will be paying customers.
I'm offering you a 25% cut.
And believe it or not,
interest in this kind of thing is strong.
- How strong?
Very strong.
- Just what does one of these ghost tours look like?
- I'd rather show you.
- No, I, I no, I.
- What have you got to lose? - I don't,
I can't really see a bunch of.
- Just, just, just one hunt.
Okay, and I promise
I'll make this stop every tour that I do.
Okay, I mean, it, it's,
it's money that you don't even have to work for.
- Okay, all right, fine.
Fine, I'll do one, but not here.
- That's fine.
I mean, there are plenty of places to go around here,
but we can go tonight.
- Yes. Sorry, don't.
- All right, you got a deal?
Oh, shoot.
- Oh, hey, just one question for you.
- Uh, it's because of Bill Murray.
- What?
- Bill Murray.
That's the reason why I'm a ghost hunter.
That's the question you're gonna ask, right?
Sorry, I, I, I thought I'd answer the question
before you asked it thinking it would save us time,
but apparently it, it, it,
in the end, it did not.
My bad.
I'll be back at 6:00.
See you at 6:00.
You know, it's not that bad
once you actually get in here and adjust to it,
get acclimated.
Well, might as well start recording.
- Nothing yet.
- Usually, you need to find
the right frequency range and mic.
But you'd be surprised what you'd find
when you get the sweet spot.
Um, I, I'm amazed you decided to come.
- Ah, well, try anything once.
- That's what people say, but most don't mean it.
Yeah, I guess so.
Okay, honestly.
- I told you, Bill Murray.
- No, no, not I, I get it.
Bill Murray got you inspired to be a ghost hunter.
But what then?
You know, I mean, how? How?
How does a person go about getting into a career of this?
- What do you mean?
- Well, I mean, you know,
is there like a vocational school
or college for ghost hunting?
You messing with me?
Well, I end up, but I mean, I'm,
I'm actually curious.
I mean, what do you do
to establish a career in this?
- I started as an amateur ghost hunter
when I was in high school,
but I didn't know what I was doing.
What high schooler does?
- Well, after I graduated,
I looked up a few local ghost-hunting chapters.
You'd be surprised what kind of activity there is
in Kentucky.
- Not that surprised, actually.
I mean, my, my high school had a lot of rumors about,
you know, it, it was haunted, you know,
of course, there was like the story of the.
- The old burial ground one.
- Yeah, that's that whole thing.
But then there was this other one about these,
these hookers that were rounded up
and hanged in the town square,
which is now the football field.
So. - Oh,
you went to Justman County.
- You know it?
Of course, you know it.
Every janitor there was sworn to some slew of stores
of things that happened after hours there, you know?
But I always just thought who people believed in ghosts
were just,
never mind.
- No, say it.
- Nah, you know, this is, this is your thing.
And I think I've been rude enough.
- It's okay. I can handle it.
- Well, I just always thought that
it was more of a person taking unresolved feelings
and projecting them onto a fantasy type of thing,
that's all.
So, you asked.
- It's okay.
Usually, I feel most people that don't believe in something
just because they've never seen it.
They're usually self-centered, so.
- So, you believe in ghosts because you've seen one?
- Yes. But more importantly, I don't believe in death.
So, it makes sense that they would be out there.
- Wait, what?
- I don't believe in death.
- You don't believe in death.
- Mm-hmm. - What do you believe in?
- Change.
- Change?
- What do you believe in?
I believe in my senses.
- I don't trust my senses.
- Okay, all right, all right.
Think about it.
When you hear a song and like, bam,
you remember that exact moment
you heard that song the first time.
And you know, you couldn't remember that on your own
if you hadn't heard it and someone had just asked you.
Or you smell something
and it takes you ride back to your grandma's kitchen.
Bam! It's like time travel.
- Interesting point.
- Yeah, sometimes it's more accurate
than a photograph, you know.
- We got a EVP.
- What?
- We've got an electric voice phenomenon.
Now, usually,
anything can kind of set off a K2 meter,
but most can't change their frequency on request.
Way fearing spirit, we come in peace.
Will you communicate with us?
If you can come closer to the machine.
Now, can you back away, please?
Can you come closer again, please?
Way fairing Spirit, we come in peace.
Will you communicate with us?
We'll not harm you.
Did you die here?
Or are you merely resting here?
If this is William who died in the boat, on the dam,
please turn on the light.
If this is Natalie who drowned in the river.
Please turn the light on.
If this is Benjamin who died mysteriously
on the banks of the dam, will you please turn the light on?
- All right, Glen-Joe, this has been fun, but it's...
Okay, well, we got a,
it turned on. - Thank you.
If you died dramatically, will you turn the light on?
If you were killed, please turn the light on.
If you drowned, will you turn the light on?
- Good swimmer.
- If you wanna tell us how you died.
Will you turn the light on?
- Quiet type.
- I wonder.
Oh-oh.
- What oh? What do you mean?
- If you're still angry about it,
turn the light on.
If you're angry, we're here.
Turn the light on.
- You ran so fast. - I did not.
Oh, my! How did you do that?
- Do what? - The whole thing
with the light and the, the meter, and the whole thing.
- I didn't do anything. - It was good.
No, I'm serious. That was good.
Oh, you got me.
- I swear. I swear I, I didn't do anything.
- Hey, I know me too.
Hey, I wanted to know
if you could come help with the tasting tonight.
Yeah, he knows.
Yeah, we need all the extra hands we can get.
Please.
Yes, you're a diamond. Thank you so much.
Okay, me too. Bye.
- Oh, thank God you're here.
It's fine, where is he?
Okay, full disclosure.
He does not know that you're coming.
- I knew it. - Sarah, please!
He's in there with Hartfield and Company.
I need your help.
- Really? - Yes.
I need you to talk some sense into him.
I know you guys just broke up or whatever.
Just be cool.
- Like I said,
I think it's a beautiful product y'all are putting out.
I hope you gimme a call.
- Yeah.
- I asked her to come
so she could help with the tasting tonight.
- Fine.
- Oh, but also we are not gonna let you
sell to Hartfield and Company.
Sarah, back me up.
- Actually, it might not be the worst idea.
- Oh, my God. Who's side are you on?
- I'm not selling.
He did make me a pretty good offer though.
- What kind of offer?
- To buy us out.
We'd keep the recipe
and it would become a Hartfield and Company private reserve.
- Sick son of bitch.
- Look, before you, just calm down,
before you overreact.
I'm not settling.
- Damn right you're not.
- But it was a hell of an offer though.
- You cannot let the good name of Bluegrass Spirits
evaporate into nothing.
- I know.
I'm not giving up.
I'm not giving up.
- So, there. Nothing to worry about.
I'll serve drinks tonight,
but I'm not setting up those tables.
Okay, who's ready to try another one?
So, this is a special nine-year blend
that's no longer in stores,
but available to purchase tonight, okay?
Thanks y'all. Y'all enjoy.
- Hi, I'm Glen-Joe.
- Hi, Glen-Joe, what can I get you started with?
We have a special nine-year blend that's.
- No, no, thank you.
I'm just here as a guest of Nicholas's.
- Oh, I'm Sarah. Nice to meet you.
- Nice to meet you.
- I like this guy. Hey.
Ooh, have a drink.
- No, but thank you.
- You're at a bourbon tasting. You gotta have a drink.
- Chase, leave him alone.
- I don't drink.
- As in you've never had a drink.
Really?
Why?
- Never saw the point.
- So, you don't even know what you're missing.
Dude, have a drink.
- Why?
- 'Cause bourbon is so beautiful, man.
- Bourbon is beautiful.
- Yeah, bourbon is so beautiful.
- So.
- So, beauty doesn't need a reason, man.
It just is.
Okay, all right, stump.
You should really rethink it.
- All right.
- You know it's interesting, you and Nicholas,
neither of you drink, but for exact opposite reasons.
- Hey, Chase,
can you run down to the cellar
and grab a bottle of the nine-year for me?
- Ooh, yeah, I can.
- There's a cellar?
- Yeah, there is.
- Mind if I join you?
- Please do.
Welcome to the cellar.
Okay, watch your head.
- Seems like there's a lot of space down here
for just a few bottles.
What's that about?
- Oh, it's a long story actually.
Hey, the bottle in Nicholas's office on the shelf.
I saw you were curious about that.
- Yeah.
- So, that is from a limited single barrel edition
we released a few years back.
Single barrel is in the whole run
comes from one barrel as opposed to a lot of times,
it's a blend,
so, it comes from a bunch of different barrels.
It's super, super, one of a kind, basically.
And so, that bottling was called Smooth Bitch.
And the one in his office
is the very first one that we bottled.
And what's left of it is the very last of it in existence.
We released it right before his sister passed away.
- I had no idea.
- Yeah, he doesn't talk about it much.
They were really close.
Just really close. They were partners.
They were working on the recipe together.
Actually, it was kind of her special thing.
It was like her,
her special project.
She had the most amazing ideas.
Just like, just super thoughtful.
I, I think it's the most unique thing I've seen in a while.
Ended up being her swan song, I guess.
Hey, are you getting anything?
- It's better upstairs.
- Yeah, all right, let's do it.
Watch your head.
So, they brought me on a couple months after she passed
and he was a problem.
He was shit-faced every single night.
He almost sunk the entire operation.
And then, this one day, I'll never forget it,
he walks in carrying that bottle of Smooth Bitch.
And he says, "That's it! I'm cleaning up.
This is the last drink I'm ever gonna have.
And he drank almost that entire bottle.
He got to the end and that was it.
He's been clean ever since.
Hasn't had a single drop.
- People wonder why I don't drink the stuff.
- No, man. It's not like that.
I'm telling you, it's like anything else.
You just gotta treat it right. Come on.
You're doing what now?
- A ghost hunt tour here in the distillery.
- Well, I think that's a perfect idea.
It's exactly what this place needs.
- So, what do you two do?
Me? Everything.
- But what do you do?
- Well, I'm. - Nicholas has superpowers.
- Oh, stop. - What do you mean?
- Observe.
We're doing it.
- Stop it.
- Sarah, cover his mouth. - I, I don't have superpowers.
- Keep him quiet.
- We don't have to do this.
- Uh, we do have to do this.
This is the most amazing thing you're ever gonna see.
- Chase, no.
Well, hey. - Hush, hush, hush.
Stop your bitching.
- I'm not a circus animal.
- Bad news. You're a little bit of a circus idiot.
Step right up.
I said step right up, ladies and gentlemen.
- She always does this, I'm.
- Ladies and gentlemen,
step right up to see the Eighth Wonder of the World:
Nicholas's Nose.
Okay, now there are over 30 bottles back there.
So, these three could be any of those bottles.
And we're gonna use my glass,
which I've been drinking out of all night.
And there's like been six different bourbons,
seven different bourbons in here.
Okay, I pour number one.
- That's 2013, eight-year.
- Okay, I pour number two.
- Oh, that's not ours.
Oh, that's Hartfield and Company.
That's the new five-year.
- Right, okay.
Okay, last one.
- Come on, now, chicken lips, that's the 2018 8-year again.
Trying to fool me.
- No more tricks. Last one for realsies.
- There's some leather,
no tobacco,
no cherry.
That's a 2015 single barrel.
- Wow, man! - I mean, come on!
You talented son of a bitch.
- You're the real deal man.
- Well, they all have real unique flavor profiles,
especially the single barrels.
- True, they're very unique.
But unique or not,
not just anyone can nose their way
through an entire run with pitch-perfect accuracy.
- What makes single-barrel bourbon so unique?
- Because each barrel has a different flavor.
So, the more you blend them,
the more the general recipe takes over.
- Also, legally,
you can only use a bourbon barrel for bourbon once.
- Single barrel is genuinely unique.
Once it's gone, it's never coming back.
- All right, so you are the nose, she does everything else.
And what do you do?
- She doesn't work here anymore.
- Sarah is the brainchild
behind all these awesome soirees we've been having.
And she's responsible for like 90%
of the foot traffic in here.
- Well, I for one would love to go on a ghost hunt.
- Me too.
- We should all go.
Yes.
- What about right now? - No.
No, no.
I said I was gonna go on a ghost hunt
and I went on a ghost hunt.
- Who said you were invited?
- Yeah.
- There is an old YMCA building
I've been wanting to try out.
- Yes. - Or we can do one
right here right now. - No, no.
No, it's not that late.
I guess, we can go to that YMCA building.
- Mm, I thought you weren't coming.
- Well, maybe, I need to get outta here for a little bit.
- All right, well, I'm driving.
- So, your friend runs this place?
- My aunt actually.
She's been asking me to come down here for quite some time,

Then you, you, you break, and you hack,
and you, you chip away at it.

is what gives Kentucky Bourbon its unique flavor.

But you know, the beautiful thing about rock bottom is.
- You can only go up from there.
Nothing to lose.
- So, why did you add the cellar?
I mean, it seems pretty empty down there.
- The flavor of bourbon
comes from the hot Kentucky summers
and the cold Kentucky winters.
You lose all that flavor
if you just hide your bourbon away in the cellar.
You lose some, well, you lose a lot to evaporation,
and they call that the angels share.
That's why you can only age bourbon in about 10 years.
But there's folks that think you can push it,
you can go longer than that.
If you stick it down in the cellar, hide it from the angels.
But as much as you hide from the angels,
they take in flavor.
