- [Narrator] Santiago de Chile,

on the western seaboard of South America.

For three weeks, this beautiful country

of seven million inhabitants played host

to the World Football Championships.

Santiago, the capital, at the foot

of the mighty Cordilleras,

is a modern metropolis humming with life.

Its broad, A-plane streets

and spacious squares equal anything

that can be found in Europe.

In the heart of the city
is the Plaza Buelnes,

here the traffic is a wild turmoil.

The buildings are being given a facelift

for the benefit of the visitors.

(upbeat music)

There's no lack of cars
in Chile's capital,

many of them carefully
preserved vintage models.

No wonder, with an import duty of 300%.

(upbeat music)

They even have automatic traffic controls,

the only trouble is, nobody
takes any notice of them.

(upbeat music)

Football shouts at the
passerby from every newsstand.

(upbeat music)

And from every shop window.

(upbeat music)

And ends with curvaceous football
belles from every country.

(upbeat music)

The only easy way to get
to Santiago is by air,

and all the visiting teams
landed at the airport.

Here, for example, a
Lufthansa jet is landing

with the German team.

(dreamy orchestral music)

They still seem a little
dazed from the long flight.

(dreamy orchestral music)

As each team arrived,

they were given a very friendly reception.

(dreamy orchestral music)

Herberger, the German trainer.

(dreamy orchestral music)

And cheerful crowds surrounded the buses

that took them off to
their training quarters.

(dreamy orchestral music)

(moves into whimsical music)

While the other teams were arriving,

Chile's team is already loosening up.

They needed no time for climatization,

and have already been in training
together for three months.

They mean to make a
success at their third try

at the championship.

(upbeat music)

But even they couldn't use
the new national stadium,

but it wasn't finished.

Carlos Dittborn, the
organizer of the tournament,

unfortunate died four
weeks before the start.

When Chile was given the
championships, he said,

"Because we have nothing,
we shall build everything."

And the workmen were
on the job literally up

to the last minute.

(upbeat music)

The first visitors to the stadium come

in to check their seats.

(upbeat music)

He doesn't seem very happy about his.

(upbeat orchestral music)

On the day of the opening game,

the roads are teeming with traffic.

(upbeat orchestral music)

The more sensible people,
of course, went on foot.

(upbeat orchestral music)

Tickets are checked carefully,

but with typical Latin courtesy.

(upbeat orchestral music)

And discs, giving all the fixtures,

are handed out free.

(upbeat music)

Are you lost, ma'am?

(upbeat music)

For the opening game in
Santiago between Chile

and Switzerland, almost every one

of the 75,000 seats were sold.

(upbeat music)

(upbeat marching band music)

And the band marches in
for the opening parade.

(upbeat marching band music)

Despite the warm weather, the music seems

to leave the spectators fairly cold.

(upbeat marching band music)

(audience applauds)

The President of Chile enters his box.

(audience applauds)

And the crowds liven up as
the teams take the field

to the applause of everybody in general,

and the honored guests in the
President's box in particular.

(audience applauds)

(people chant)

- [Announcer] And at last,

the 1962 World Championships are underway.

Chile, in white shirts and dark shorts.

(audience murmurs)

At this stage, everything
seemed to be in the air,

including the ball, at times.

(audience murmurs)

In the seventh minute,
the Swiss broke through,

and Wüthrich scores the first goal

in this new Santiago stadium.

(audience cheers)

The Chileans took a little
time to recover from that one.

(audience cheers)

Just before halftime,

Leonel Sánchez drove home a 10 yard shot

to level the scores,

and someone certainly
seems to be very happy.

(audience cheers)

In the second half, Chile went straight

into the attack, Ramirez
picked up a loose ball,

and crashed home the
second goal for Chile.

(audience cheers)

Less than 10 minutes later,
Leonel Sánchez scored again

to make it Chile, three, Switzerland, one.

(audience cheers)

(upbeat music)

- [Narrator] Uruguay met Columbia

in the first round at Arica,

over 1,400 miles to the north of Santiago,

in an arid desert area

that used to be a smuggler's paradise.

This is the new Carlos Dittborn Stadium,

dedicated to the organizer
of the championships.

Attendance was far below what
the Chileans had hoped for.

(upbeat music)

- [Announcer] Columbia, in
white shorts and dark shirts.

Uruguay won the toss, and started it off,

as if they were going to
walk away with the game.

But they miss their chances.

And Columbia's forwards were
equally weak in front of goal.

(audience cheers)

Up to 20 minutes, and
Uruguay unhandled the ball

in the penalty area,
and Zuluaga converted.

(audience cheers)

And for the first time,

the supporters had
something to shout about.

(audience cheers)

For the rest of the first half,

Columbia managed to hang
onto their one goal lead,

although Uruguay were
having more of the game.

(audience murmurs)

(audience whistles)

After 10 minutes in the second half,

Cubilla pushed the ball home

from a far yards out for
Uruguay's first goal.

(audience cheers)

All this triggered off
an aggressive period

of play by the Uruguayans.

(audience murmurs)

(audience cheers)

Although the Uruguayan
team were clearly on top,

their second goal didn't
come until 20 minutes

from the end, when Sasía
sent in a hard shot

from the edge of the area.

(audience cheers)

(upbeat marching band music)

- [Narrator] Back in Santiago,
we found the military parade,

not my idea of a military haircut.

This really is Santiago,
not pre-war Berlin.

(upbeat marching band music)

And we follow the troops
back to the Military School

at Chile's (mumbles), where
the German team is quartered.

All the security against spies

that hundreds of cadets can offer.

(bugle sounds)

(drum rolls)

(bugle sounds)

But I guess the German team is quite happy

to be out of uniform.

Schäfer, the German
captain, he set up a record

in letter writing, and Szymaniak,

his thigh is still bandaged.

- [Announcer] And now back
in the National Stadium

for the German-Italian
match, the German team

in white shirts and dark shorts.

(audience murmurs)

This was to be a game
of missed opportunities.

(audience murmurs)

The German goalkeeper fumbles,

and Sívori, the Italian inside forward,

misses from point blank range.

(audience cheers)

And by 22, Fahrian,
celebrating his 21st birthday

on the day of the game.

(audience cheers)

A flying hitter by Uwe Seeler,

the German center forward
goes inches past the post.

(audience murmurs)

And a free kick for Italy
crashes into a wall of defenders.

(audience murmurs)

Both defenses were now on top,

and the forward line
seemed to lack penetration.

(audience murmurs)

(audience cheers)

Another German scoring chance is missed,

and so the game ends in a goalless draw.

(audience murmurs)

(upbeat music)

- [Narrator] At Rancagua,
where England played Hungary

in the first round, there
had been heavy rain.

But here, as on all the
championship grounds,

the turf was protected
by huge plastic sheets.

(upbeat music)

Some of that water would have
been quite useful at Arica.

(upbeat music)

(audience murmurs)

- [Announcer] England, in
their traditional colors

of white shirt and dark shorts, kick off.

The pace is fast, despite the rain.

(audience murmurs)

The few spectators present were
almost lost in the stadium.

(audience murmurs)

The game was fairly even
until the 19th minute,

then Tichy cracked home the first goal

for Hungary from about 20 yards.

(audience murmurs)

(audience cheers)

England had a few chances to score

in the remainder of the first half,

but they all came to naught.

(audience cheers)

- [Narrator] Peanuts?

Chanting is thirsty work.

While the teams were taking
a well-earned breather

under the stands, the fans
dashed off to wet their whistles.

A good job the interval is short,

they couldn't stand that pace for long.

However strange the language
and surroundings may have been,

the drink stand should have
made everybody feel at home,

no matter where they came from.

(upbeat music)

(audience murmurs)

- [Announcer] When the teams came out

for the second half, it
was still anybody's game.

(audience murmurs)

Maybe the England team had had
a tactical talk at halftime,

whatever the case, they were managing

to keep the Hungarian forwards out.

(audience murmurs)

One man in trouble was keeper Springett,

who was having difficulty
with the slippery ball.

(audience cheers)

(audience murmurs)

(audience cheers)

With the quarter hour
of the second half gone,

a Hungarian defender
prevented a certain goal

by pushing the ball around
the post with his hand,

and the referee gave a penalty.

And Flowers scores.

(audience cheers)

It's now Hungary, one, England, one.

From this point, both
teams continually pile

on the pressure, but
couldn't break through,

and the game looked like ending in a draw.

But with less than 20 minutes to go,

Albert took a pass near the goal,

and made it two-one for Hungary.

(audience cheers)

- [Narrator] In the second game

of the first round at Arica,
Russia played Yugoslavia,

Yugoslavia in white shorts.

Neither side scored in the first half.

- [Announcer] It was a fast game,

and both goals had had narrow escapes.

(audience murmurs)

(audience cheers)

A leap for Yashin as that one goes past,

now a free kick for the Russians,

it hits the bar, back
to Ivanov, who scores,

and the Russians have taken the lead.

(audience cheers)

The play now became very ragged,

neither team was very dangerous,

and good passing movements
were few and far between.

(audience murmurs)

(audience cheers)

(audience murmurs)

(audience cheers)

It would seem as though fumbling were

to be the order of the day.

One of the Russian players is injured,

and has to be carried off.

(audience whistles)

It was a game of hard
tackling and many fouls.

(audience cheers)

(audience whistles)

The Russians attack up the right wing,

and with five minutes to go,

Ponedelnik scores the
second goal for Russia.

(audience cheers)

Although the Russian's football
wasn't very outstanding,

they deserve their victory.

(audience cheers)

(slow music)

- [Narrator] Now another change of scene.

The Sausalito Stadium in Viña del Mar,

where Spain meets Czechoslovakia.

(slow music)

Sports headline, "Chile
wolfs the Swiss cheese."

- [Announcer] The Czechs
are playing all in white.

(audience murmurs)

The Spaniards have been
serving up the better football,

but the Czechs have more than made up

for it with enthusiasm.

(audience murmurs)

(audience cheers)

Neither side has scored in the first half,

though both forward lines
have had several chances.

(audience murmurs)

Attacks on the goal usually peter out

when they get near the penalty area.

(audience murmurs)

In the second half, the
Czechs are still kept

on the defensive, but 10 minutes

from the final whistle, they break away,

and Štibrányi scores the
only goal of the game.

(audience cheers)

As most of the photographers were lined up

behind the Czech goal,

they seem to have backed the wrong horse.

The Spaniards have played
the better football,

but to win the World Cup,
one must score goals,

and being a goal scorer can
be a dangerous profession.

(audience murmurs)

- [Narrator] Back in Santiago,

Germany in white shirts kick
off against Switzerland.

- [Announcer] From the
start, the pace was fast.

German attacks were followed
by Swiss counterattacks.

(audience murmurs)

(audience cheers)

And now a German attack in slow motion.

Brülls gives the ball to Haller,

a terrific left foot drive,

and the Swiss keeper does
well to stop that one.

(audience murmurs)

The ball then moves back to
the other end of the field.

(audience murmurs)

(audience cheers)

Try as they might, Switzerland
can find no way through.

(audience murmurs)

(audience cheers)

And when they do shoot, it
has to be from long range,

and Fahrian (mumbles) it safely away.

(audience cheers)

In the 20th minute, Brülls gets the ball,

rounds a defender, and
crashes in a 20 yarder

to put Germany in the lead.

(audience cheers)

Halftime, the score, Germany,
one, Switzerland, nil.

In the second half, Switzerland
are reduced to 10 men,

Eschmann has had to leave
the field because of injury.

Six minutes after the restart,

Seeler bursts through the middle

to score Germany's second goal.

(audience cheers)

It seems all over bother shouting,

but the Swiss thought otherwise,

and less than 10 minutes later,

Schneiter lifted the ball over the heads

of Fahrian and Schnellinger,
into the German net.

Two-one now the score to Germany.

(audience murmurs)

The Swiss goal was in
danger several more times,

but they held out, and
the score, two to Germany,

and one to Switzerland, a result

that seemed to satisfy Germany's trainer.

- [Narrator] The game between Uruguay

and Yugoslavia at Arica
was a smashing affair

in every sense of the word,
the Yugoslavs all in white,

and the game started as
clean as their shirts.

(audience murmurs)

- [Announcer] After 20 minutes,

Cabrera heads in (mumbles) center

to put Uruguay in the lead.

(audience cheers)

Five minutes later, Jerković
is foul in the penalty area.

(audience cheers)

And the referee says penalty.

(audience cheers)

Skoblar converts it.

(audience cheers)

With half an hour gone,
the Yugoslavs attack again.

Jerković shoots, the ball bounces out

of the keeper's hands, and Galić drives it

into a net, two-one for
Yugoslavia at halftime.

(audience murmurs)

When the teams come out
for the second half,

it's Yugoslavia who goes
straight into the attack.

(audience murmurs)

(audience cheers)

That was a let off for a Uruguayan.

(audience murmurs)

But with only two minutes play gone,

Jerković sends in a center.

(audience murmurs)

(audience cheers)

For the rest of the game,

both of the teams had
their chances to score,

but frittered them away.

(audience cheers)

With just 20 minutes left,

Uruguay were putting on the pressure.

(audience murmurs)

(audience cheers)

And then the fun started,
Sasia, Uruguay's inside left,

punches the Yugoslav keeper,
Popović takes revenge

by slapping Cabrera's face.

Sasia and Popović are sent off.

(audience whistles)

- [Narrator] And here's
another free for all.

They seem to have the same
rules as on the field,

but the kids are obviously
getting a different sort

of kick out of it than their elders

in the Italy-Chile game at Santiago,

where foul followed foul
in rapid succession.

- [Announcer] Well, this
game was only six minutes old

when Italian Ferrini was sent off,

and the play had to be
held up for five minutes.

(audience cheers)

(audience chants)

Then comes another pretty little scene.

David kicks out regardless
of Sánchez's legs,

and Leonel Sánchez, son
of a boxing champion,

knocks out David with
a beautiful uppercut.

(audience whistles)

Mr. Aston seems to be
in a bit of a quandary.

(audience whistles)

But he finally sends David off

with the help of the local police,

although why he lets Sánchez get away

with it still remains a mystery.

(audience cheers)

There were some odd
flashes of sportsmanship,

but these were few and far between.

(audience whistles)

In the second half, Chile
went all out for goals,

but it was a quarter of an hour

from time before they succeeded.

A free kick by Sánchez,
and Ramirez heads it in.

(audience cheers)

Italy tried to take the offensive,

but all it results in are
more unpleasant scenes.

(audience whistles)

(audience chants)

Finally, with two minutes to go,

Toro crashes in a shot from 25 yards

to make it two-nil for Chile.

(audience cheers)

All over bother shouting.

(audience cheers)

No, there's another little scuffle.

(audience whistles)

And what looks like some ironic applause

for England's Mr. Aston.

(audience cheers)

- [Narrator] And now, over to Viña del Mar

for the match between
Brazil and Czechoslovakia,

the Czechs all in white.

(audience murmurs)

- [Announcer] The two teams
took some time to settle down.

(audience cheers)

Brazil were on the
defensive for the most part,

but still gave Schrojf,
the Czech goalkeeper,

plenty of work to do.

There was danger in the air every time

the Brazilian forwards
were in reach of goal.

(audience murmurs)

(audience cheers)

There were Czech attacks, too,

but their forwards rarely
bothered the Brazilian defense.

(audience murmurs)

(audience cheers)

Well, this game, too, had
its fair share of fouls.

(audience cheers)

Well, this was a game spoiled
by too much defensive play,

and too much inaccurate shooting.

(audience cheers)

A poor match, with far
too much running about,

and far too little good football.

(audience cheers)

The Brazilians gave the
impression they'd lost a lot

of their brilliance from
the 1958 World Cup series,

or perhaps they had some
aces up their sleeve

for later games.

Whatever the answer, a goalless
draw was a fair result.

(slow music)

- [Narrator] The Russian
and Columbian teams shared

the same training ground.

In comparison to some of the
scenes in the first round,

everybody here seems very friendly.

(slow music)

Fond embraces, or maybe it's just a warmup

for the all-in wrestling later on.

(slow music)

A lot of people had the idea

that Columbia would be a
pushover for the Russians,

who were heavily backed favorites.

(slow music)

- [Announcer] This match was played

in the Carlos Dittborn Stadium in Arica.

The Russian team in white shorts.

(audience murmurs)

The Columbians start with a
powerful display of football,

but soon the Russians have
gained the upper hand.

(audience murmurs)

In the ninth minute,
Ponedelnik slips the ball back

to Ivanov just outside the area,

and he cracks the ball home, past Sánchez.

(audience cheers)

(audience murmurs)

Two minutes later, Chislenko
evades several defenders,

and the Russian team are two goals ahead.

(audience cheers)

The Columbians seem to be outclassed,

and their midfield moves get them nowhere,

and before the game is a
quarter of an hour old,

Ponedelnik whips in a grand shot,

and it's three-nil to the Russians.

(audience cheers)

A three-nil lead looks very impressive,

but halfway through the first half,

the Columbians break through.

(audience murmurs)

And Aceros slips the ball over the head

of the advancing Yashin.

(audience cheers)

Aceros' goal seems to have put
new life into the Columbians,

and they now have the Russians guessing.

In the second half, they
still keep pressing,

and the Russians are
kept on the defensive.

With just over half an hour to go,

Ponedelnik makes it four for the Russians.

(audience cheers)

In the 23rd minute, a corner for Columbia.

And no one is more surprised than Coll

when he scores direct to make it four-two.

(audience cheers)

Columbia's only chance lay in attack,

and they continue to
storm the Russian goal.

(audience murmurs)

With 25 minutes to go,
they make it four-three.

(audience cheers)

A few minutes later,
Klinger breaks through.

(audience murmurs)

And there goes goal number four.

(audience cheers)

Russia, four, Columbia, four,

what a wonderful fight
back from three-nil down.

(audience cheers)

- [Narrator] In Viña del Mar,
most people expected Mexico

to be outclassed by Spain's
millionaire professionals,

but the Mexicans,

still without a single
world championship win

to their credit, kept the Spanish wolf

from the door right up to a minute

before the end of the game.

(audience cheers)

Even then, it was an
ex-Hungarian that beat them.

Puskás crashed the ball home from 10 yards

for the only goal of the game.

(audience cheers)

- [Announcer] Mexico's goalkeeper seems

to be suffering from a mild
case of disappointment.

(audience cheers)

(upbeat music)

- [Narrator] Back in Santiago,

Chile's team are still pegging
away at their training.

Escuti, the goalkeeper,
is being given a workout

in preparation for the
next game with Germany.

(upbeat music)

Here, two German ex-stars, both members

of Germany's championship
team in Switzerland in Sweden,

are demonstrating the
latest in football boots.

(upbeat music)

This is Toro, descendant
of South American Indians,

and Chile's star inside right.

Like the rest of them, he
has to try out the new boots.

(upbeat music)

- [Announcer] Later, in
the Santiago Stadium,

Germany win the toss.

(audience chants)

Chile kick off,

and soon find the German
defense a tough nut to crack.

(audience chants)

(audience cheers)

The German forwards give
the Chilean defense a lot

of trouble, too, and
the post saves that one.

Yes, it close there.

(audience murmurs)

(audience chants)

Seeler, the German's center forward,

is brought down in the penalty area.

(audience cheers)

And Szymaniak converts the penalty,

and sends the keeper the wrong way.

(audience cheers)

In midfield, Chile have a lot of the game,

but their attacks break down

when they reach the penalty area.

(audience chants)

With less than 10 minutes to go,

the German inside left sends
over a beautiful center,

and Seeler takes off to
head down the second goal,

two-nil for Germany, and a
ticket to the quarter final.

(audience cheers)

- [Narrator] Back in Rancagua
for the match between Hungary

and Argentina, Hungary
had already qualified

for the quarter finals before
they came out for this game.

They fielded four
reserves, and the game was

of correspondingly poor standard.

The Argentinian team, in
white shirts and dark shorts,

had a chance of reaching
the quarter finals

if they could win.

(audience murmurs)

(audience cheers)

- [Announcer] A magnificent drive

by Pando, the Argentinian inside ride in,

Grosics makes an equally magnificent save.

(audience murmurs)

There was a lack of urgency
in both sets of forward lines.

(audience cheers)

But once again,

the football produced was not
of real World Cup standard.

The game ended in a goalless draw.

And Hungarians satisfied,

and the Argentinians
seemingly pleased enough

with their performance.

(slow music)

- [Narrator] At the
Spaniard's training quarters,

Di Stéfano, star center
forward of Real Madrid,

worked as hard as the rest,
but he wasn't selected

for a single one of the
championship matches.

Ferenc Puskás, ex-Hungarian officer,

and now heavy artillery
in the Spanish attack.

Autograph hunters are the
same all over the globe.

(slow guitar music)

(audience murmurs)

- [Announcer] In the match with Brazil,

the Spanish team, in
dark shirts and shorts,

started off well.

(audience murmurs)

There was little to choose
between the two sides.

(audience cheers)

Suddenly, at 34th minute,
the fine passing movement let

through Adelardo to score
the first one for Spain.

(audience cheers)

But scarcely a minute later,
it's Spain on the attack again.

(audience murmurs)

And a terrific volley almost
brings about goal number two,

and once again, the Brazilian
keeper, Gilmar, is beaten.

But halftime came, the score,
Spain, one, Brazil, nil.

(audience whistles)

For awhile in the second half,

Spain still had the upper
hand, but they seemed to tire,

and the Brazilians became more aggressive.

And now, a free kick for Spain.

A flying overhead kick,
the ball's in the net,

but the winger is off-side.

(audience whistles)

Brazil now attack with the ball

to their right winger, Garrincha.

(audience murmurs)

(audience cheers)

But now, the ball goes out
to left winger, Zagallo,

who cuts down the wing, 26
minutes gone in the second half.

Across goes the ball, it's
to Amarildo, and it's there.

(audience cheers)

The equalizing goal for Brazil.

(audience cheers)

The ball goes to Didi.

(audience murmurs)

Didi to Garrincha,

the man who never knows who
he's playing until the day

of the game, and then
someone has to tell him.

Garrincha, the Stanley Matthews of Brazil.

(audience murmurs)

Down he goes, to the bi-line,
across comes the center,

there goes Amarildo, and
it's two-one for Brazil.

(audience cheers)

- [Narrator] One of the big surprises

of the tournament was Mexico's
win over Czechoslovakia.

Almost straight from the kickoff,

the Czechs, all in white, break through.

Mašek's on the ball, (mumbles),

and Czech's have got their first goal.

(audience cheers)

It looked like being another
sad day for the Mexicans.

(audience murmurs)

- [Announcer] Once again,
Czechoslovakia start up an attack.

(audience murmurs)

Through ball to their outside right,

and that shot might have made it two-nil.

(audience murmurs)

Most of the spectators watch one game

and listen to another at the same time.

(audience murmurs)

(audience cheers)

The Mexicans, now on the attack.

Raise a through ball, and
Díaz crashes the ball in

from two yards to even the score.

(audience cheers)

The Mexican defense is
still under pressure,

but the Czechs are getting a little slow,

and their moves are
becoming all too obvious.

(audience whistles)

(audience cheers)

(audience cheers)

And, after half an hour's play,
the Mexicans break through.

(audience murmurs)

(audience cheers)

And now del Águila has the ball,

and he puts it past the keeper

for goal number two to Mexico.

(audience cheers)

At halftime, the
scoreboard, two to Mexico,

and one to Czechoslovakia.

The Czechs have apparently had a lecture

in the dressing rooms, and they came out

for the second half full of fight.

(audience cheers)

But the Mexican tactics had
them guessing all too often,

and although two Mexican
players were injured,

the Czechs couldn't penetrate
their tight defense.

(audience whistles)

And then the Mexicans' counterattack,

hand ball, and the referee says penalty.

(audience whistles)

The photographers race
down from the other end

of the field, this could be
the picture of the season.

(audience cheers)

Hernández takes the kick,

and it's there, three-one to Mexico.

(audience cheers)

This is indeed the moment of triumph,

Mexico's first win in
the World Cup series.

(audience cheers)

- [Narrator] The press building.

Scores of newsmen from all over the world,

and direct teletype connections
to all parts of the globe.

(upbeat music)

A babble of tongues,
and the endless clicking

of typewriters, this is the United Nations

of sport reporters.

And, like all reporters everywhere,

they always want to know
everything about everything,

right down to the last stud.

(upbeat music)

Until, of course, they've
got their last reports

in for the day, and then, perhaps,

they'll get down to some stud poker.

(upbeat music)

Santiago by night, like any city anywhere,

neon lighting, flashing signs,

and the hustle and bustle of traffic.

(upbeat music)

Football is put on ice for a few hours,

and players and spectators
go to the ice review.

But the next day, it looked as

if the German team had
had their ardor cooled off

a little too much the night before.

and so it seemed as if it was not going

to be their lucky day.

Another attack, a header, but no,

it's pulled down once again.

well, defenders scrambled them away.

all in white, and Hungary.

Right from the kickoff,

the Hungarians were
dangerously aggressive.

Schrojf, the Czech goalie,
was kept on his toes.

Hungarians set off an attack.

The ball goes to Tichy,
but it's past the post.

Now, the Czechs start a
good passing movement.

And Czechoslovakia have scored.

Hungarians are now putting
everything they know

into the game.

But still, the Czechs are
playing good football.

Off goes a Hungarian attack.

the Czechoslovakian side,

but now they're slowing the game down,

they're leading one-nil,

and time is definitely on their side.

And there goes the final whistle,

and Czechoslovakia have
made the semifinals.

training is underway for
the game with England.

Pelé goes over the hurdles

but apparently he wasn't

to have his day, and here's
one who's going to prove it.

After a half an hour's play, it's a corner

to Brazil on the left wing.

Across the goal it goes,
Garrincha's on mark,

and it's there, and Springett
doesn't stand a chance

as Brazil go into the
lead by one goal to nil.

And the seat cushions fly in jubilation.

And now England go on the attack.

And there's gonna be a free kick there.

And it's England Captain
Johnny Haynes to take the kick.

It's a good one.

Gilmar can't hold it, Hitchens
in there, and it's a goal.

And so to the second half.

And now it's a free kick to Brazil,

just outside the England penalty area.

And the referee says, "Get

Springett can't hold it,

Vavá's following up, and it's a goal.

And that makes Brazil, two, England, one.

And now England attack.

And the ball has gone to Didi.

Back to Garrincha, what's he gonna do?

He shoots, it's there,
Springett is beaten,

three-one to Brazil, and so
the Brazilian (mumbles) go

to the semifinals, and England go home.

in Arica for the quarterfinal
between Chile and Russia.

- [Announcer] And Russia,
playing in white shorts,

have been on the attack for some time,

but now the Chileans are hitting back.

And the Chilean center forward

outside the penalty area.

And it's Sánchez to take the free kick.

And it's in the net.

And Yashin didn't like that at all.

And the local fans explode with joy.

And now the Russians attack.

But the Chileans disagree with that one.

And they're appealing to the linesman.

Well, it could be worse, John.

And almost straight in the kickoff,

it's the Russians who break through.

But now the Chileans move
back onto the attack.

Oh, but back to Rojas,
he moves it forward,

he shoots, and it's a goal.

And the Russians start
to put on the pressure.

And their goalkeeper,
Yashin, is coming out

to play the third fullback.

(audience whistles)

The Russians still on the attack.

(audience cheers)

And Chile, with everyone
in defense, clear the ball,

and it's a break away now
by the Chilean forwards.

(audience chants)

Cuts in, Yashin's got it covered,

and so it's a let off for Russia.

(audience cheers)

And the game ends in a
two-one victory for Chile,

and the Russian favorites are knocked out.

- [Narrator] Chile's fans are as wild

with jubilation as if
they had won the final.

Santiago is seized with a mixture

of football fever, and
the spirit of Mardi Gras.

They brandish torches,
shout, dance in the streets,

even if they've never seen a game

of football in their lives.

Even the nightclubs and
theaters are on the ball.

Hmm, quite a team, I wouldn't
mind a game with them myself.

the players are appearing to be nervous.

Now Brazil go on the attack.

Now, the ball is crossed,
there's Garrincha,

who gets a shot in, and it's in the net.

And so that makes it one-nil for Brazil.

The ball back to Garrincha again.

And this time, he's brought down.

And the local fans don't like it a bit.

After half an hour's play,
Brazil (mumbles) a corner.

Zagallo takes the kick, and again,

it's Garrincha who deflects the ball

into the net for the second goal.

And the game's getting just
a little bit rough now.

That was a beautiful shot.

The ball is cleared away
by the Brazilian defense.

Here comes the corner.

Now, Chile have the ball.

And there's appeal for a penalty.

Sánchez takes the ball,

and that makes it three-two for Brazil.

Aha, got it.

and Vavá catches the defense napping,

and it's four-two for
the World Cup holders.

And then the public relations campaign

for Chilean support in the final.

Stadium at Viña del Mar,

semifinal between
Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia,

and the Czechoslovakian
team in their white shirts.

The game started at a fast pace

with the ball swinging from end to end.

There were good chances for both sides,

but at halftime there was still no score.

And a few minutes after the start,

the Yugoslav keeper
decides to bounce the ball

on the head of Kadraba.

And the Czechs go one up.

(audience cheers)

After this goal, the
Czechs go on the defensive,

and the Yugoslav team
start pressing harder.

(audience cheers)

About 10 minutes later,
Schrojf moves too far out

from his goal, and
Jerković evens the score.

(audience cheers)

Time out now for running repairs.

(audience whistles)

More nets had to be mended in Chile

in those two weeks than in
other countries in a whole year.

(audience whistles)

In my days, they used
to make nets stronger.

A Czech breakthrough, the Yugoslavs wait

for the whistle, and let Scherer through

to score the second Czech goal.

(audience cheers)

And after that, the Yugoslavs
seem to go to the dogs.

(audience whistles)

Again, Czechoslovakia on the attack.

And then, for no apparent reason,

Marković handles, and it's a penalty,

which Scherer promptly converts.

And so it's a clear three-one
victory for Czechoslovakia.

(audience cheers)

- [Narrator] Many of the games

in Chile attracted few spectators.

It was not lack of enthusiasm,

but lack of cash that
kept the crowds away.

If you wanted to see one game,

you had to pay for a set of tickets.

The prices were too high, and anyway,

the men in the street
could see the games free

at special TV stands.

I like the look of that center forward.

He'll probably tell
his boss he had a flat.

Oh, what's going on down
there, more footwork?

- [Announcer] The Yugoslavs, all in white,

take the field at Santiago
for the game against Chile

to decide for third and fourth places.

And a fresh lot of film arrives.

In the first half, there was little

to choose between the two sides.

Then Chile attacked on the right wing,

and a shot from Tobar
forces the Yugoslav keeper

to make a spectacular save.

Again, the dark-shirted Chileans attack,

but the Yugoslav defense stands firm.

(audience chants)

In the second half, the Yugoslavs attack,

and manage to get the ball in the net,

but Skoblar is offside.

While everyone is expecting the match

to go to extra time, in the last minute

of the game, Rojas fires in the shot

that Marković deflects
past his own goalkeeper.

And so Chile have made third place

in the championships, a deserved victory

to the host country,

and trainer Riera's hard work was crowned

with unexpected success.

among the 55,000 spectators.

It's perfect cup final weather,

and for the most part, it was
typical cup final football.

- [Announcer] And Brazil win the toss,

can this be a good omen?

(audience cheers)

Right from the first whistle,

Brazil seem to be getting
the better of the game.

Both sides appear to be
just a little nervous

on this big occasion.

(audience cheers)

And now, it's Czechoslovakia
on the attack.

The ball is crossed, put through,

but Gilmar dives, just
that little bit too quick

for center forward of
the Czechoslovakian side.

And now Brazil come back on the attack.

And Schrojf has to be on
his toes for this one.

Well, that was indeed a close shave.

But now a sharp
Czechoslovakian counterattack.

Ball is put through to Masopust,

who shoots, and it's a goal, first blood

to the Czechoslovakian side.

(audience cheers)

Czechoslovakia still attack.

(audience cheers)

Then the Brazilians begin to
pull out some of their tricks.

(audience cheers)

And a bare two minutes later,

Amarildo whipped the ball smartly in

from the left to make the score even.

Schrojf seemed to be expecting
a center, not a shot.

(audience cheers)

A free kick for Brazil,
another dangerous moment there,

but cleared away by the
Czechoslovakian defense.

(audience cheers)

And halftime, it's Brazil,
one, Czechoslovakia, one.

For the first 25 minutes
of the second half,

the game is even.

(audience cheers)

With Brazil going perhaps just
a little more attacking there

with a fine shot from Garrincha.

(audience cheers)

And now it's Brazil who
bring the ball away again.

(audience cheers)

The pass out to Amarildo on the left wing,

he crosses the ball.

A hitter by Zito, and it's in the net,

Brazil have got a two-one lead.

(audience cheers)

And the Brazilians go crazy with delight.

(audience cheers)

And it seems as though
scorer Zito has been injured.

But now, as usual, the
photographers flock onto the field.

(audience cheers)

The Czechs appear in no mood to give up.

(audience cheers)

More attacks from this Czech side.

But the Brazilian
defense is standing firm.

(audience cheers)

Then Masopust crosses in the middle,

with a brilliant save by Gilmar.

And now Brazil onto the attack,

and it's the throw in for Brazil.

(audience whistles)

It's lobbed high into the middle,

up goes Schrojf, he fumbles,
and Vavá has it in the net.

Three-one to Brazil.

And now there's wild jubilation.

swarm onto the field.

of the unhappiest man in the World Cup.

the whole population jams the streets,

delirious with joy, dancing, cheering,

shouting, they give their
team a frenzied reception.

And gigantic firework displays light up

the night sky of Rio.

This was indeed a night to remember.
