Original subtitles

(gentle music)

(birds chirping)

(gentle music)

- Death never comes easy for the old or the young.

And once someone passes

across that mysterious line into the afterlife,

it's those of us who remain on this side

that feel the pain.

It's a line we all must cross at some point.

None of us gets to skip it.

There's no way to bypass it.

Yet when someone so young is taken early,

we can't help but hear

that one lonely word echoing in our minds.

Why?

- Hey. Hey man.

- Why did a senseless act of violence

have to befall this beautiful young lady?

- You guys okay?

- Why did her wonderful family have to suffer this loss?

- She's hurting right now, but she's a strong girl.

- Why do we in the community have to say goodbye

to one of our brightest?

(gentle music)

Well, my answer is simply this.

For those who are in Christ

because of the cross, there will be a reunion.

Death is not the end.

Let's each take a moment

to lift up the Reynolds family in prayer.

(insects chirping)

(footsteps walking)

(person sniffing)

- It's gonna be okay.

- I've asked our Chief of Police, Bill Tomlinson

if he would please come up here and offer a few words

of comfort for those of us here tonight.

(dog barking)

- You know, I'm more of a justice kind of guy

so I don't really have any words

of inspiration for you this evening

but I do want you to know that our community is safe

and our department's doing everything in its power

to ensure that something like this never happens again.

Thank you guys for coming out tonight.

And please be safe.

(person blowing)

- Wanna go say something to her dad, maybe a hug would help a lot right now?

- Okay.

(footsteps walking)

- Mr Reynolds.

(person sniffing)

(dramatic music)

(clock ticking)

- Thank you.

You have been amazing, Mrs. Baker.

I mean, we couldn't be more grateful.

What, that's very, very generous of you.

No, no, thank you.

Yeah, we'll talk soon.

All right, bye.

- Well?

- They're dropping all the charges against me

and the district attorney

said she's not pursuing it any further.

- Oh, thank you Lord.

- And Emily said she's waiving the remaining balance.

- Are you kidding?

- That's what she said.

- Did she explain why?

- I'm not gonna ask her.

Don't want her to change her mind.

- So this means you're getting your job back.

You're going back to work?

- I don't know that I want to, I mean,

not in East Bank at least, not with Tomlinson still around.

- Are these words really coming out of your mouth?

- I don't know, maybe I should try something new.

Seems like every time we pin Tomlinson down,

he just crawls out of another hole.

(bell ringing)

Were you expecting someone?

(person sighing)

(door whirring)

Hey.

- Hey, what's up Sarge?

- Come on in.

- Actually, can you come with me for a minute?

We got somebody with information

on Tomlinson, wants to talk with us.

- Technically I'm still on leave.

- Yeah, I know, I know.

But this is big Sarge, I need you.

(gentle music)

- Who is it?

(door knocking)

- Are you coming out today?

Your mom made some mac and cheese.

- I don't really feel like being around people today.

- Okay, well there's food if you're hungry.

- I'm gonna talk to her for a minute.

It's not fair, is it?

It's hard to see how life can get back to normal, huh?

Well, if you ever wanna talk to a girl who can relate

to what you're feeling, I would love to try.

(gentle music)

I know I'm not Beth,

but I've been through a lot.

And even though it's been rough, I've made it through.

I'm still here.

And I'm...

I'm better now.

Probably thanks a bit to your dad, [laughs]

Anyway,

maybe some of what I've been through,

maybe it could help others,

like you.

You know where I am if you need me.

- Hey mom.

- Yeah?

- I'm like really scared right now.

- I know, I know, I know.

I want to talk to my dad about heaven and God.

Will you ask him for me?

- You are so my daughter, you know why?

- Why?

- Because I wanted to ask him the same stuff.

(person laughing)

You wanna do it together?

Come on.

- What assurances do I have?

- Well, right now, none.

The Rangers closed the case and you know who my boss is.

So just two guys talking

and a few others that we can trust.

Like Travis.

- This stream is using triple DES encryption

and I'm also recording it on two separate disks, so.

- Okay, so about two and a half years ago,

Tomlinson, when he was still a sergeant,

he came to me asking me about business ideas,

said he had some situation

with his family that required extra funds.

I mean, we started small and legal,

with some associates of mine.

But you know, it's a slippery slope.

As our operation grew, Tomlinson needed somebody

inside of the department to keep things under wraps.

And he said Travis,

with all of his religious stuff wouldn't help.

But that Detective Tanner, well, she might be up for it.

He knew Kris's brother was on Fentanyl

and he was a thorn in her side.

And so Bill made sure

that a laced batch ended up in his hands.

- Same batch that killed him.

- That's right.

- No, no.

- Hey.

- No, no, that's my brother, they killed me brother,

they killed him.

- We will get him.

- No.

They murdered him.

They murdered my brother.

(person crying)

(gentle music)

They murdered him.

- We will get him, I promise.

- What about the waitress?

- She...

We work with girls, to entertain clientele.

Bill brought her in,

the waitress, and well, she didn't take well,

apparently she had talked to somebody at her work.

So Vince or Raven had to silence her.

- Do you know which one it was, who killed her?

- We're close bud, we'll get 'em.

- Vince, he grabbed her after work and he took her

to the alley, shot her, and then they moved the body

to the warehouse to blame the boyfriend.

- I'm glad you know how to do this stuff

But this job is over.

We need to get out.

- No, no, no, not yet.

We're still one step ahead of them.

(insects chirping)

- Hey, thank you Mrs. Travis.

- You're very welcome.

- Thanks babe.

- So if the Rangers closed the case, then your hands are tied?

- We filed a report to open up an investigation with the FBI

but it's gonna take weeks, possibly even months.

- As far as the agency's concerned, it's closed.

We're not even supposed to be here right now.

- So Hank is willing to wear a mic to get us everything

we need outta Tomlinson's mouth and we're just gonna wait?

- No, it's possible that we already have enough

as it is, Tanner's testimony and Anthony,

couple that with everything else we got.

- Man, I got the photos from outside of the concert, so.

- No, you can barely see anything in them.

They'll never fly.

- But this other direction you're talking about

it's gonna take weeks or months, right?

- Unfortunately.

- Well we don't have the time.

- Look guys, we've tried to catch him twice already.

- Yeah, but we didn't have Tomlinson's right hand man

willing to work with us.

And look, as much as I hate using a tragedy

and this guy's family as leverage,

how long is he gonna be feeling

the way he's feeling right now?

- Wait, come on guys.

The four of us plus Kris, we can do this.

- No way, absolutely not.

Tanner cannot be involved.

Okay, you weren't there today.

I mean, she was unhinged.

I say if we do anything at all, it's just the four of us.

- Well, where's Kris right now, Sarge?

She's with Janet and Kevin at the hideout,

told them not to leave her alone until they hear from us.

(gentle music)

- Okay, so two large drinks, an apple pie,

a cherry pie, napkins, forks, knives, anything else?

- That should do it, thanks.

- Okay, I'd say give me 15 minutes

but I wanna make sure I'm not being followed.

So let's make it 20.

- I think you're safe, Janet, but 20's fine.

- Okay, I'll be back.

- Okay.

(door creaking)

- So do you still have access to Tomlinson's calls?

- I do, thanks to a warrant and a few backdoor apps.

- Can we go through them?

(person sighing)

- I'd rather not without our FBI friends present.

- It's not a big deal, we can just.

(door knocking)

- Why can't she just go get it?

It's unlocked.

(gentle music)

(door creaking)

Hannah, what are you doing here?

- So this is the big time federal investigation,

alone with her.

I thought you said she moved away, Kevin.

- Okay, it's not what it looks like.

- Please explain to me what it looks like.

I'd really like to know.

'Cause to me, it looks like you're cheating.

That's what I'm seeing right now.

I mean, wow, did you two just hop out of bed

as soon as you heard me walking up here.

- Please stop, Hannah.

I can explain, okay.

- Now you can explain things to me,

to your fiance, after you've been caught.

You know what?

(gentle music)

Congratulations, I'm your ex-fiance.

(door banging)

- Hannah, just wait, please.

(computer whirring)

- [Tomlinson] This thing with your daughter, Hank,

it's terrible, believe me when I tell you

I'm just as broken up about it as you are.

I can promise you that every resource

at the PD is doing its best to find the gunman.

(machine whirring)

Of course, man.

Yeah, the old East Bank High School.

I can do that.

Do it after the dark, right?

Okay, 10 tonight, I'll see you there.

(computer whirring)

(phone buzzing)

(gentle music)

(person sighing)

(gun whirring)

(door knocking)

- Who is it?

- [Travis] It's Travis.

- Come in.

- Hey, I thought I'd just come and check on you.

See how you're doing.

- Not much happening here.

- So is that a good thing or a bad thing?

- What do you think?

- Well, I heard something's going down tonight

with Tomlinson, to end all this.

Send him to jail where he belongs.

- Or to hell.

- What'd you say?

- It's possible, isn't it?

To send someone to hell.

The Bible says it's a place, so you must be able to.

(person sighing)

- That's not something I think anybody should wanna do.

- Well some people belong there.

- Kris, I get where your head's at.

But thoughts like that, they'll just punish you.

Won't comfort you.

- Well, I don't find comfort

in much these days, so forgive me for trying.

- Forgive, huh?

That's a heavy word.

Forgiveness is something we seem to want more

for ourselves than we're willing to give to others.

- Okay, Reverend Travis.

- No, I'm not trying to preach at you.

Just talking.

Look, I'm not saying something

doesn't need to happen to Tomlinson. It does, but

if you grasp what hell was really like

and you believed it's a real place,

you wouldn't be asking how to send people there.

You'd be asking how to keep them from going.

(gentle music)

Including yourself.

- Deep stuff.

- Important stuff, Kris.

Janet and Kevin will be here soon.

Is there anything I can do for you?

- I'm good.

Just gonna stream some more shows, yay.

- Yeah,

I'll call you if I hear anything.

- You better.

(door whirring)

(gentle music)

(objects whirring)

(insects chirping)

(sirens whirring)

- You think that's him?

(machine whirring)

We got lights.

Is that him?

(gentle music)

- That's him.

Long, I'm coming to your position.

- Copy. - Remember we're here to protect Hank.

Nobody get anxious.

Kevin, you good on your end?

- Hank's audio feed is live and recording.

I have locations on everyone.

But it looks like Kris hasn't come online yet.

- What do you mean Kris, she's with you.

- Negative, she left to join you guys,

said you called her in.

- Tre, Kris is MIA.

They don't have eyes on Kris.

- That's not good man.

- Yeah, I know.

- You're late.

- Four minutes.

- Still late.

- What are they saying?

What's happening?

- Nothing yet.

Our people are stationed

outside the auditorium to cover Hank.

We're just waiting for Tomlinson to implicate himself, here.

- Where are the others?

I thought we had a new opportunity.

- I have new clients willing to pay three times as much

but they want some services to go along with the goods.

- What do you think?

I don't think we have anything we can use yet.

(footsteps walking)

- Why the old high school?

- Well, the school district is gonna leave this place vacant

for about two years.

If there's no buyers, it gets demolished.

So you're looking at our new center of operations.

- It's not bad.

Although a little bit ambitious

for a guy who just buried his daughter.

- Well, I needed something to keep me busy.

- What kind of services are these new clients asking for?

- There's some very important people

who want some other people to disappear.

- Look the deal with the waitress, that was a necessity.

Not a new business channel.

Shane Tanner, the guy did it to himself.

- We got him.

- Who'd you get?

- Hands behind your head.

- Let's go up.

I'm gonna need you to walk this way.

Come on.

- Boyer. Long. Are you there?

- What's up Sarge?

- I don't know, I think we got trouble in the gym.

- All right, I'll go check it out.

(footsteps walking)

- No, no, no, no, no, no, no.

This is bad.

- I'm going over there.

- What, no, no, it's way too dangerous.

How are you gonna help?

- I will find a way to help.

- Janet, we are the control center,

the hub, we stay here with.

(gentle music)

- So you're in, we're set?

- Who are you talking to?

- What do you mean, I'm talking to you.

- You want to tell me why you're here.

- You're too late.

If you were smart, you'd put your guns down and run.

- Yeah, sounds like a good idea, doesn't it Vince?

- So you in?

- Now you know I would be in

but I think you forgot about one small detail.

- What's that?

- I don't need your money anymore, Hank.

I just got the latest diagnosis on Kay

and she's fading fast.

She's not gonna last much longer.

- I'm sorry to hear that.

- No you aren't.

(gun banging)

(footsteps walking)

(door whirring)

- Guys, guys, he's down.

Long, Boyer, we need help.

- Keep moving.

- So you're Tomlinson's gunman with a terrible aim.

- Oh, I wasn't trying to hit you.

Turn around, do it.

- Didn't think you could hit anything anyway.

(people grunting)

- Well, that's a bad idea.

Let her go, let her go.

(objects banging)

(people grunting)

(lights whirring)

(person breathing)

- Stop, stop right there.

Don't move, get down.

- You know I have a bad hip Kris.

- Shut up and get down.

You deserve so much worse

than a bad hip for what you did to Shane.

- Shane was a deadbeat.

He was a loser, I did him a favor.

- You really want me to kill you, don't you?

- If you're gonna do it, do it.

Send me to hell with your brother.

Maybe a couple years you can join us.

I really don't care anymore.

- Kris, don't, we got him.

- Go away, Travis, I don't need you.

- Don't do it, we got him.

- I said go away, leave me alone.

(person grunting)

(fists banging)

- Don't move an inch.

Turn around, cuff him.

(person breathing)

- When you guys are done, can I get a little help?

- Nobody move, I'm not playing.

- Tre, you good?

- Yeah, we good man.

But I feel a lot better you two put them guns down.

(person crying)

Leave me alone.

- Hey, I got it, I got it.

I know you're in a lot of pain right now.

This is not the answer.

- Yes, it is, he's reason I feel this way.

- Hey, I get it.

Killing him is not the answer.

It's not gonna bring you peace.

It's okay.

I know you want to be free from the pain, so did I.

But I promise you there's hope.

There's another way.

- Show me your hands Bill, drop it.

Get down on the ground.

(person crying)

- It's okay.

Gonna be okay.

(upbeat music)

- It's open seven days a week.

I've only been there twice, I vote for Benny's Tacos.

- We are not going

- Please.

- Sergeant Travis, Kris.

- Hey, hey, thanks for coming.

- Absolutely.

- Congratulations, Kris.

That was awesome.

- Thank you.

I never would've expected to be here today

but I guess God had other plans.

- You guys know we could use some field agents

here in Texas.

A lot of land to cover in the Lone Star state.

Not enough of us to do it.

- That's enticing,

but I've actually got a few things in mind for the future.

(gentle music)
