Original subtitles

- (uplifting music)

[zipping suitcase]

- Come on

Please Kay. I need you.

I'll go to marriage counseling.

We can go together.

- It's too late, Bill.

Don't start acting like you care now.

I am done. I'll send my sister this weekend

for the rest of my clothes.

- That is not necessary.

I'm not even gonna be here.

Just, just hang out a couple days.

- Exactly. That's the problem.

You are never around.

You are 10 times more committed to your work

than you are to me, to our daughter or anything else.

And I am sick of only having your attention.

When I threaten to leave.

- I'll take some time off.

We'll take a vacation as a family.

Let's just try.

Please. Let's, let's wait until I get Chief.

- I have already said that it is too late

and you are not gonna manipulate me into changing my mind.

Bill, I'm sorry

But, I don't wanna be married to a cop anymore.

(somber music)

[slam]

(music intensifies)

(thunder)

- What are you doing sitting

in here all alone, huh?

Oh, is the most powerful man in East Bank

having a pity party?

- Get your pathetic money chasing self out of here.

- Why would you say that?

- Now!

- Okay baby, did I...

- Get out!

(dramatic music)

(thunder)

[sirens]

- Do we have to shoot directly in the sunlight?

It makes me want to squint

and then I look like an idiot the whole time.

- We can move wherever you want.

I just thought this background would look nice, but...

- Yeah. Yeah.

Who cares about the background?

Okay. Maybe if he slides over here a couple of feet

then I can actually see.

people can hear what I'm..

- We, we, we do not have time to move.

Okay. They're coming to us.

Chelsea, you are on in three, two.

- The tiny town of East Bank remains in the spotlight.

After a tenured sergeant

with the police department was arrested.

For making death threats against a member

of the press.

Officials also claimed Sergeant Gary Travis

was impeding an ongoing murder investigation.

- We take any allegation

against a member of our department very seriously.

But after a thorough investigation, it was determined

that the, unfortunately the charges were appropriate.

- Sergeant Travis is out after posting bail and remains

on administrative leave pending the outcome of this case.

As with any case involving public servants

the Texas Rangers Law Enforcement Agency will

maintain a watchful eye.

- At this time

the Texas Rangers are not involved with the investigation.

Should the East Bank authorities require our assistance,

Well, we're always ready and willing to step in.

- Gary, thanks for coming in under the circumstances.

- Yeah

- I'm sure you'd like to be spending some time

with your family after all you've been through

- That's not a problem.

- Yeah, you probably have a ton of questions.

I'm hoping today we can get you some answers.

- Well I certainly want to hear what you guys know.

Hopefully I can help.

- Fair enough.

Well to start, we know for certain you'll be exonerated

on the impedance and tampering charges.

You wanna tell him why, Long?

- Because Anthony Jackson.

He's with us.

We had to bring him into protective custody.

- What he's alive? Where?

- He'll be on a flight back

from Virginia tomorrow along with Kris Tanner.

We need them here.

- Wait? Kris and Anthony, they're together.

Why are they with you?

- That's what we're here to talk to you about.

- How long have they been with you?

Do you have any idea what my family has been

through and you just decide to spring this on me now?

- Bill Tomlinson is at the center

of a narcotics and public corruption investigation

of which Anthony is a material witness.

We had to give Tomlinson room to play his hand.

Now you wanna see this

through with us to the fullest extent.

We're gonna need you to check your personal connections

at the door and focus Sergeant Travis.

- Okay.

- Good.

Now what we're about to share with you

you cannot tell anyone.

Honestly we debated whether or not to bring you in,

so this stays sealed.

Not your best friend

not your priest, not your dog.

Not your wife.

Nobody can know right now.

- Yeah, I understand.

- Shall we?

- Is nobody home?

Gary, Katie?

- They're gone.

Katie started her new job.

Gary got home late and he had an early meeting today.

- So you get the whole house to yourself alone.

I'm jealous.

What is this?

Is this what I think it is?

- I don't even know why we have that.

It was from Gary's high school prom.

- I know exactly where it's from.

He broke mine that night and he should give me this one.

- You and Gary went to the same prom?

He was two grades older than us.

- You're kidding, right?

We went together.

I was a sophomore, but he asked me to go.

Tell me you knew after all these years.

- No, he never mentioned it.

- It's crazy.

Couple of dumb teens. Right?

(dramatic music)

- As you can see, we have surveillance

on Tomlinson's residence in the evening hours when

he is there just watching who comes and who goes.

- I see

- The original plan was to wait a few more weeks

before making a move.

But obviously your situation forced us to

expedite the schedule.

We're still trying to gather who all's in his network

- His network?

Network of what?

- Check it out.

Look here.

All these other cities on Route 234, delivery

of controlled substance arrest over the last 12 months.

Up here in Clover.

We've got 89. Right here in Devlin, 108.

Right here in West Bank, 106.

Yet, right here.

Right here in the middle East Bank, Texas

16.

You see the problem with that?

- Tomlinson's keeping people's record clean for a cut.

- That's the same conclusion we came to.

But chances are he, he's not alone.

He has

pawns.

- Thus the surveillance.

- Yeah

- We were onto Marco Rodriguez and that's what brought us

to East Bank.

But when we tailed Marco, we found Tomlinson.

- Being that he's a police chief.

It turned into a public corruption case and

that's when they called the Texas Rangers.

Special agents, Long and Boyer were reassigned to help.

- What about Kris and Anthony?

I mean, how do they fit into this?

You haven't answered that yet.

- Well, they'll be here in the morning.

We thought you'd want to hear it from them.

[ Birds chirping]

- Hey, you're home.

- Hey, where's my wife at?

- She had to go run a couple of errands.

I told her I'd get dinner started.

- Oh, I was gonna take her out to eat.

Haven't gotten to spend much time with her since I got out.

- So I have to ask, why have you never told Becky

about us going to prom together?

- I didn't think she needed to know.

I mean, for the sake of y'all's friendship.

- Is that the only reason?

(dramatic music)

- I guess what she doesn't know won't hurt her.

(music intensifies)

(Knocking)

(knocking louder)

- You okay?

I was banging on the door.

You fall asleep?

Looking kind of lonely in there.

Huh?

- Don't start that.

- Come on.

I've been locked up with a bunch of sweaty guys.

I think I'm overdue.

- Who did you meet with today?

You never told me.

- Some state law enforcement people, about the cases.

And I think I might have good news.

I mean hopefully soon.

I mean like really great news.

- Is there anything else you haven't told me?

- No. What am I forgetting something?

- You just seem really chipper considering everything

that's going on right now.

- I'm feeling optimistic.

God's really turning things around right now.

- At least he's answering your prayers.

- Hey, aren't our prayers the same?

- Nevermind.

- No

Honey.

Hey, look at me.

What are you thinking?

- I just wanna get out.

Will you leave so that I can have some privacy?

- Yeah.

(footsteps)

(radio chatter)

- As exciting as the 98 home run race was

both guys were juicing.

It was all fake.

But the 85 bears,

that defense took over the country, everyone loved them.

That was a phenomenon.

- No. You see what you fail to realize Boyer was

that baseball is America's pastime.

(Laughing)

It was two all-star players. Games every night.

It was so, so much bigger than that.

(laughs)

What?

- I can't take you seriously right now.

Look in the mirror.

- Oh that's great.

Thank you.

You could have said something.

Instead, you just laugh at me.

Thank you.

(Sigh)

- If you want to keep this going

we're gonna have to make some calls.

See who needs a safe route through Texas.

Otherwise it's over.

The money, gone.

- You know why I need the money, Hank.

- I know, but now is the time where you have to decide.

If you're gonna go deeper or fold and walk away.

- Sorry to interrupt gentlemen, but it looks

like we have some uninvited guests outside.

(ominous music)

- Deeper? Sounds to me like we're already

in over our heads here.

Who are they?

- Not sure, most likely

competitors.

Here to siphon away all your business.

So what do you want me to do?

- You know what to do.

(car engine idling)

- You'd think that with all the advancements in technology

we could like mount a camera or something.

This is so old school.

- You back out here tomorrow?

- Nope. I'm taking Mary and the kids

to one of those campground getaway places for the weekend.

- That sounds fun.

- Yeah

- I kind of owe it to her.

Let's just say the Mrs. ain't too happy

about me getting stuck on this case.

- Oh, you can tell everyone it won't be long

[crash]

[scream]

- You Okay?

Are you okay? Are you hit?

- I don't think so, I, I, nothing hurts.

- Stay down! Stay down!

- Get us out of here.

- Okay. Just stay down.

Keep your head down.

- I'd be careful. They might be at your house next.

- Well, you got your back

to me so I know something's obviously wrong.

You want me to pray before we fall asleep?

Lift up whatever's bothering you?

- Not really.

- Okay. Something is obviously wrong.

You want me to sit here and listen?

Hmm?

Well I'm not gonna go to sleep until you talk to me.

- Can you name one positive thing that is happening

in my life right now?

- Your husband's home.

This case is

- That is your life, I said mine.

- Beck. We share a life.

What happens to one of us happens to both, right?

We share everything.

- Do you share everything, Gary?

Or do you pick

and choose what things I'm allowed to be part of?

Because right now I feel like I'm in a pit and I am alone.

And you are just skipping around

Like everything is perfect and God is

in control and obviously He is not.

- Honey, what are you talking about?

- Everything. Everything that is happening right now and

and not even knowing if Anthony is even alive, and I just

- Honey. Honey, listen.

Listen. Anthony's fine.

- What are you talking about?

- I found out today, but because my job, I'm not

- Oh, your job.

Your job that has controlled everything

about our life and our family for the past two decades.

And no matter what is going on in my life

your job can just drop

in at a moment's notice and wreak havoc.

And I'm sick of it.

I'm sick of being married to a cop.

(crying)

- Oh, we were so worried.

- I'm sorry.

- I didn't mean to

- Crazy stuff, huh?

- Tanner.

Trouble follow you around?

I seem to remember East Bank being a little more peaceful

before you arrived.

- You're welcome.

- All right people.

Let's get started.

Travis, we need to get you up to speed.

Ms. Tanner, why don't you start?

- Okay.

A few days after Shane died

I get a call to meet up at a warehouse off of Parker.

The one past the railroad track.

They say they can help

with the Marco guy who sold fentanyl to Shane.

- [Chief Tomlinson] Kris

- And Chief Tomlinson is there with a huge bag

of cash and he's being super shady

and he tells me the cash is mine if I join him.

- That's where Anthony comes in.

- Right? So like I was following Tomlinson

cause Brittany had told me some stuff that happened

to her, you know?

And it was wrong of me to do that.

I know, but like I was really mad.

I was listening to everything they were saying

and you know these dudes show up and then they start..

they were threatening Kris and stuff.

- We were tailing Marco Rodriguez that night.

He took us to the warehouse.

- Do we go in?

- [Dispatcher] Standby.

- I've counted at least five

inside and we've got two more combing the perimeter

- [Dispatcher] Negative on entry.

- What do you want us to do?

- We were told to stand down and wait.

- But the thing is, when Tomlinson showed up

it wasn't just about Marco anymore.

- Well what happened next?

- (eerie music)

- So what's it gonna be Sergeant Tanner, looks to me

like you can join us or you can join your brother.

- You know what?

Shoot me.

Do it.

Shoot me.

Shoot me.

Because the way I feel about life right now

you be doing me a favor.

Do it.

You can't threaten me with death.

(gun cocking)

- We can't just let her go.

- Ah, that's alright.

She'll change her mind.

If not Marco's people will handle her.

(train whistle in distance )

- FBI. sh. FBI.

- Well after Kris shared what happened

inside we knew her importance to the case.

so we put her in protection.

- I told them I could go to Virginia with my mom, disappear.

For a while.

I was planning on going there anyway.

- They put a hit out on her.

But we had an agent planted within Marco's network.

So they spread word she was dead.

- The problem with a guy

like Tomlinson is he knows the system.

He stayed disconnected from the hit on

Tanner. If we try to nab his foot soldiers

- He would know you're on to him.

- Exactly.

- So I understand that Anthony is a witness

but how did he end up with you guys?

- Anthony?

- So like I waited in the warehouse

until everybody was gone and then I took off.

- Once we saw that he was a witness and isolated

we made the call to bring him in.

- We believe that

during the detainment is when he lost your gun.

- The gun that Tomlinson said killed Britney.

- Yeah. Which obviously Anthony didn't kill her

cause he was in FBI custody at the time.

We believe one of them killed her later that night.

But we're not sure who or where.

- So why did Anthony have to stay in witness protection?

- When Anthony told us he was living with you

a sergeant in East Bank,

there was no way we could let him go back.

- Tomlinson's involvement was new to us.

So obviously that expanded our umbrella

of suspicion to the entire East Bank police force.

- I offered to have Anthony stay

with me and my mom somewhere no one would suspect.

- I'm really sorry.

Like they didn't give me a choice.

- You don't need to apologize.

- Tomlinson rushed the charges

on Anthony to cover his own tracks.

When the charges fell on you, Travis

it was obvious what he was doing.

- So now you're going to bring Tomlinson in?

(somber music)

- We don't have enough on Tomlinson yet.

See, that's the problem.

He's always one step outta reach.

But Tomlinson, thinks

Kris is dead.

Which is why we need y'all's help.

We have a plan.

Kris, we'll put you up somewhere quiet in East Bank.

We'll need you available in a moment's notice

in case Tomlinson tries to spring the trap.

Anthony

We'll do the same for you.

Your testimony remains critical in this case.

Agent Boyer will find a quiet place for you.

- Yeah, but I got a problem with that.

- What's the problem?

- You gotta let me do something first before I

agree to cooperate.

- Excuse me.

- Nah, you heard it.

- Leslie,

thank you for all

of your help through all of this stuff.

You have been a great friend.

- It's what you would do for me.

- No

No. No. It is too risky.

I am sorry Anthony.

But we are not here to negotiate with you.

- Then I can't help you.

- We can minimize the risk.

Make it safe just one time.

We need him.

- All right

One time.

(toads croaking)

- Why don't you get out, see who it is.

- Are you being serious?

- Yep.

Go on.

- Someone wants to see you.

(uplifting music)

(crying)

- So we're in business.

What's the plan?

(dramatic music)

(pieces hitting floor)

(dramatic music)
