I'm the Nelsons next
door neighbor, Thorny.

Actually, my real
name is Don DeFore,

but Thorny's a pretty nice
name, don't you think?

[laughs] You know, it's a
lot of fun living next door

to the Nelsons.

Of course, it gets
pretty hectic at times.

[chuckles] Oh, here comes
Ozzie Nelson, my good friend

and neighbor.

Or rather, there he goes.

And of course, this busy
young lady is Harriet Nelson.

She'll turn around
a little later on.

And this is David Nelson, the
older of the two Nelson boys.

This isn't exactly David's
best angle, of course.

And here comes Ricky Nelson.

Look out there, Dave!

- Hey, watch what
your doing, will ya?

- Just testing the brakes.

They work fine.

- Well, I'm glad to hear that.
- Hiya, boys.

Going for a ride?

- I'm just thinking
about selling my bike.

Dave's going to let me
sell his old one, too.

- I told him he wouldn't
get much for it.

It's pretty beat up.

- Oh, I can see why you'd want
to sell Dave's, but yours still

looks pretty good, Rick.

- I'm just getting kind
of old for it, Pop.

- [chuckles] Are you kidding?

Full grown men ride bicycles.

- None of the guys I go around
with ride bikes anymore.

- Think I'll show
my age and take

one last spin around the block.

- Don't fall off.

- Careful of your knuckles.

[music playing]

You know, Rick,
I'm not so sure you

ought to sell that
bike of yours,

especially with the
nice weather coming on.

Have a lot of fun,
a lot of exercise,

get out in the fresh air.

- Yeah, I suppose so.

- I remember when we were
kids we had this bicycle club.

We used to go on weekend trips.

Gee, it was great fun.

- I kind of like racing.

- Well, racing is the best part.

Scarcely a weekend went by
we didn't have these bicycle

races.

You guys ought to try that.

- Hey, that sounds
like a swell idea, Pop.

I think you've convinced me.

- [chuckles] Sure, have a
lot of fun with your bike.

- Oh, I'm not talking
about my bike, Pop.

- I thought you just
said I'd convinced you.

- Yeah, about the racing part.

I could sell my bike
and get a motorcycle.

- A motorcycle?!

- Sure, they're fast too.

Heck, we could start
a motorcycle club

and be the scourge
of the neighborhood.

Now, now, now--
just a second, son.

I didn't say anything about
your buying a motorcycle.

In the first place, you're
too young to get a license.

- I don't know.

I'm pretty tall.

Marlon Brando
rides a motorcycle.

So does Mr. Peepers.

- That has absolutely
nothing to do with it, son.

They're full grown men.

Besides, you can do
just about anything

on a bicycle you
can on a motorcycle.

- They aren't as fast.

- Well, maybe they're
darn near as fast,

at least racing bikes are.

- Yeah, that's a great idea.

I could get a racing bike.

That's a swell idea, Pop.

Thanks a lot.

- Now you're making some sense.

- Sure, I could sell my other
bike, get some more money,

and buy a new racing bike.

That's a swell idea, Pop.

- Uh, uh, where do you figure
on getting the extra money?

- Could we have another
little talk real soon,

Pop, just you and I?

[music playing]

- [chuckles] Boy,
that was close.

- What was close?

- I just talked to our young
son out of buying a motorcycle.

- Oh?

- Yeah, I had to do
some fast talking,

but I finally got him to
settle for a new racing bike.

- You didn't!

- I didn't want?

- You didn't tell Ricky he
could buy a new racing bike?

- Well, you didn't listen to me.

He wanted a motorcycle.

I practically insisted
he get the racing bike.

I thought it was
darn fast thinking.

You got to be on your toes
with 14-year-old kids nowadays.

- Well, I guess, I owe him $1.

I thought the scheme
would be too complicated.

- What are you talking about?

- He bet me $1 he could
talk you into letting

him buy a new racing bike.

[car horn]

It sounds like it's
in our driveway.

[music playing]

- Hey, how about this?

- Hi, Oz.

- Hi, Oz.

- How do you like my new car?

- Is this yours, Thorny?

- Oh, no, doggone it.

Sure wish it was.

Guess who it belongs to.

- Don't tell me it
belongs to you, Doc.

- Yes, sirree.

- Well, how about this.

- He's been letting
me drive it around.

Sure terrific, Oz.

- Yeah, when did you get it?

- About four days ago.

Boy, driving one of these little
things is really the life.

I'm crazy about it.

- Uh, don't you think
it's about time you

took the "For Sale" sign down?

- I just put it on.

I'm selling it.

- I thought you said
you just bought it.

- I did.

But frankly, it's
beginning to cause

me a lot of embarrassment.

My patients don't
seem to go for it.

One of them told my nurse
it's like seeing your banker

in a Hawaiian sports shirt.

[laughter]

- That's what you get for being
such a respectable citizen.

- Yeah.
[laughter]

- Say, uh, you wouldn't be in
the market for a sports car,

would you, Oz?

- Oh, no, thanks, Doc.

I mean, after all,
I'm a family man,

and I'd feel a little
silly buzzing around town

in a car like this.

- Well, I'm a family man.

- Well, I know, but my
family's a little bigger,

and this looks a little small.

- And I see.

Well-- [gasps] Uh-oh.

- What's the matter?

- It's nothing serious.

But you ought to
get more fresh air.

Now, with this
little car of mine--

[laughter]

- Thanks a lot, Doc, but I'm
too much of a conservative type

for a car like this.

- Eh, well, OK.

Oh, say, I have an appointment.

Oz, I'd like to ask
you a little favor.

Could you keep it in your
garage for me till I sell it?

I don't have any
room at my place.

You can drive it if you like.

- Oh, well, you're welcome
to store it here, Doc,

but I don't think I'd look
right driving it around town.

- Oh, don't be silly, Oz.

You don't know what
you're missing.

Hop in.

I'll give you a little
spin around the block.

- Well, uh, uh, what about
your appointment, Doc?

- No, no, that's OK.

Go ahead.

Just don't be too long.

One of you guys has to
drive me to my office.

- Oh, uh, Doc, do you mind?

- Oh, sure.

[chuckles]

- This is comfortable.

I don't want to catch cold.

- Oh, Doc, this is
really terrific.

you liked it, Oz.

- Doc's new car.

- Come on, hop in.
Go for a ride.

- Oh, no, I've got to
get ready to go downtown.

- Oh, don't be foolish.
Come on, hop in.

- I'll mess my hair up.

- Oh, forget about
your hair, Harriet.

This is terrific.

[starts engine]

- Here we go.

Oh, hey, how about
my appointment?!

- How do you like this?
See who's driving?

[laughs]
- I see.

- That was more fun.

This is the cutest car.

- Oh, it's really great.

- Uh, what happened to Doc?

- He couldn't wait.
He took a cab.

[laughter]

- That's a pretty affectionate
look you're giving that.

It isn't yours, you know.

- [chuckles] I know.

- I hope you're not
thinking of buying it.

- No, but it is fun to have it
around for a couple of days.

Hop in.

I'll drive you downtown.

- Well, do you think
you can handle it?

- Sure.

You drive it the same
as any other car.

- Well, I don't know.

There's an awful lot
of traffic down there,

and those gears
are pretty tricky.

[starts engine]
Whoa-- wait a minute.

Wait a minute.

OK, let her go.

- Uh, brace yourself.

It's got a pretty fast take off.

[music playing]

- Are you coming in with me?

- Uh, no.

I think I'll wait
out here, thanks.

- I won't be long.

- Take your time.

- Hey, pretty nice
car you got here, Mr.

- Oh, thanks, son.

- I've never seen a
car like this before.

- Well--

[honks horn]

Oh, no, no, no, no--
uh, uh, don't, uh--

Oh, I'm sorry.

[chuckles]

- How fast does this thing go?

- Uh, well, I really
don't know, son.

- My, this certainly is
a fine looking machine.

- Oh, thank you, sir.

It belongs to a friend of mine.

- You know, I used to
own a roadster, myself.

- Oh, is that so?

- Oh, isn't this a
darling little car?

- Of course, I expect
mine was wasn't quite as

fast as this one though.

- Uh, well, actually,
I'm not a very fast...

Uh, that is, I haven't really
let it out full speed yet.

- I noticed it's for sale.

Do you know how
much is being asked?

- Uh, no, I'm sorry.

I don't.

- Isn't this the cutest
thing you ever saw?

- [chuckles] Oh, well--

- How long have you had it?

- Uh, well--

- It isn't his car.

- Well, that is,
not technically,

but you see, it belongs to
this very good friend of mine,

and I have, uh, custody of it.

- It doesn't have much room.

- Well, it's, uh,
roomier than it looks.

- Can you ride three in it?

- Well, I imagine so.

It might be kind of a squeeze.

- Do you mind if we try?

- Well, uh, uh, my w--

go ahead, slide in.

- Yes.

May I help you, ladies?

- Thank you.

- That's-- oh--

[chuckles]

- Hmm, this is nice.

- Well, yes.

It's a little bit, uh, squeezy.

[chuckles]

- I bet it's fun to ride in.

Would you think we were
terrible if we asked for a ride

around the block?

- Oh, well, my--

well, no.

I guess we could
take a little spin.

[chuckles] Uh, uh,
pardon me there.

[starts engine]

Uh, uh, sorry, uh, we'll try
to take you on another trip.

- That's all right.

Hey, it's a very
nice car, isn't it?

[music playing]

[car approaching]

- Oh, well, here we are.
[chuckles]

- Thank you, ever so.

- Oh, it was a pleasure.

- We certainly enjoyed it.

- I'm awfully glad you did.

- Thank you again, Ozzie.

- Oh, anytime at all.

[chuckles] [stammers]

- Is it all right
if I take a ride?

- Oh, yes.

He's a perfect gentleman.

[music playing]

- Allow me.

- Oh, thank you.

- Uh, uh, bye.

Uh, I just, uh, was giving the
girls a little demonstration

of the car.

Uh, everybody seemed
to want to ride in it.

Uh, this gentleman here
is waiting for a ride.

- Oh, oh, no thank you.

I really must be getting along.

Besides, there are just too
many pretty girls ahead of me.

- Well, you and the car seem
to have made quite a hit.

- Uh, yeah.

This car is a regular showpiece.

I wonder how much
Doc wants for it.

- Don't tell me
you want to buy it.

- Oh, well, no, uh,
not necessarily,

just kind of interested.

- I think we better take it home
and put it right in the garage.

[starts engine]

[chime]

Eyes on the road, sport.

[music playing]

- Hi, Oz.

- Oh, hi, Thorny.

- Well now, don't tell me
you're going to high hat

your old friends just because
you've been driving around

in that sporty car.

- Well, I'm-- I'm sorry.

I was deep in thought.

- Well, how come
you're walking, anyway?

I thought you'd be cruising
around the countryside

on a beautiful day like this.

- Well, that's just it.

I'm afraid I'd better
leave the car in the garage

until Doc sells it.

- But, Oz, Doc wants you to
drive it around so somebody

will see it and buy it.

- Well, that's just it.

I've been driving it around,
and I'm getting spoiled.

I'm getting used
to the darn thing.

- Well then, what
are you waiting for?

Go ahead and buy it.

It's for sale.

- Don't be silly.

I can't afford to have a car
for every member of the family.

- Well, I realize that.

But boy, you sure look
good behind that wheel.

Makes you look 10 years younger.

- You sure I don't
look silly in it?

No, I mean it.

There's nothing more
ridiculous then a man

who doesn't act his age.

- Oz, you know me.

I say what I think.

Now, you're the kind of a guy
who should drive a sports car.

You're the casual type.

- I must admit, the
sunshine and fresh air

is pretty easy to take.

- Especially with the
nice weather coming on.

Oh, we could do the
town up in real style,

take it to the lodge
meeting on warm evenings.

Can't you just see us roaring
up to the bowling alley?

[laughter]

- You got me thinking.

- And on Sunday mornings
when you like to sleep late,

I could take Catherine for a
little drive in the country.

Or on Saturday afternoons
when you're playing golf,

I could let you off at the
club and maybe drive over

to the ballpark or up to the
lake for a little fishing.

Think it over, Oz.

[chuckles]

- No, I'm afraid
it's not for me.

- Oh, Oz, don't rush into this.

Take your time.

Just think it over.

- Well, I'll-- I'll,
uh, think it over.

- OK.

I'll be saying you, sport.

[music playing]

- Oh, hiya Doc.

I've been looking for you.

- Hi, Oz.

I've been looking for you, too.

- I want to talk to
you about the car.

- You've been a real pal
keeping it for me, Oz.

- Oh, it's been my pleasure.

- It looks wonderful.
- [chuckles]

- You really didn't have to
keep it polished like this.

- Well, uh, I feel I have
kind of a special interest

in the car.

Now, I know this
may surprise you--

- No, doesn't
surprise me at all.

You know, if it
hadn't been for you,

I might not have
sold it so soon.

- Sold it?

- Didn't Harriet tell you?

- Well, no.

I haven't seen Harriet.

You mean, you've
actually sold my--

sold the-- the-- the- the-- car?

- Sure, thanks to you.

I know you won't accept
money for this, Oz.

But I'll tell you
what, you can have

five free shots of penicillin.

- Well, I--

I guess we won't be
needing this anymore.

Uh, uh, who did you
sell it to, Doc?

- I believe you
know the gentleman.

He's coming over
here to meet me.

Oh, in fact, here he comes now.

- Oh, this gentleman.

- Mr. Hotchkiss, Mr. Nelson.

- Oh, how do you do, sir?

- It's a great
pleasure, Mr. Nelson.

- Well, thank you.

- You certainly are
a clever salesman.

- Oh, well, thanks.

- She's all yours,
Mr. Hotchkiss.

- I can hardly believe it.

- Well, climb in and
see for yourself.

- May I?

- Of course.

- I hope it doesn't rain.

- On a beautiful day like this?

The starter's right under there.

Oh.

[starts engine]

- That, uh, motor
sounds a little strange.

- Oh, sounds great to me.

- Well, take her away.

- Right you are.

And away we go.

- Whoa, watch it!

- Oh!

- I'm terribly sorry.

- Oh, uh, see, you
put it in reverse.

First is straight ahead.

- I didn't do any damage, did I?
- Oh, no.

It's all right.

They make very sturdy
bumpers on these cars.

- Yeah, oh, I'm terribly sorry.

You know, I've gotten used to
driving the old fashioned kind

you don't have to shift.

[laughs] Thanks
again, Dr. Williams.

- Oh, that's OK.

Actually, we both owe our
thanks to Mr. Nelson here.

It was his demonstration
that sold it.

- Oh, I mean, [chuckles] well,
I didn't demonstrate anything.

- Oh, but you did.

You very ably demonstrated one
of the most attractive features

of the car.

- I did?

- Indeed, you did.

Come on, girls.

- Hi, Ozzie.

- Hi, Oz.
[starts engine]

- Hello, girls.

[music playing]

- Hi, Mom.
- Oh, hi, dear.

How's it coming?
- Oh, just fine.

I'm all through.
- Oh, that's fine.

How did it work out?
- Oh, swell, I think.

I'm real happy with it.

- Oh, that's good.

- I better go
downstairs and wash up.

I'm all greasy.

- Well, thanks, again, Dave.

- You're welcome.

- Oh, here you are.

- Oh, hello, dear.

I hope you're not still brooding
about Doc selling the car.

- No, no, no.

I've practically
forgotten about it.

I do think it's kind of strange
he sold it to that type of man,

though.

- What type is that?

- Well, you know, Mr. Hotchkiss
is a real nice fellow and all,

but he just doesn't
seem the type of man

to own a sports car.

- I didn't realize you
had to be a certain type.

- I mean, after
all, a car like that

does attract a lot of people.

- So I noticed.

- I didn't say
anything about girls.

- Oh, who did?

- Oh--

- Oh, maybe I'm just as glad
you didn't buy that car.

- [laughs] It wouldn't have been
a practical car for us anyway.

I must admit, though, I
did enjoy the riding around

in the open air
and the attention.

You know, people stop
and take special notice.

It was kind of fun.

- Yes, I know what you mean.

- It's sort of like
wearing a new sport

coat or a bright new tie.

It gives you a lift,
makes you feel good.

People stop and talk
to you, get friendly.

- Well, dear, I think
I've got just the answer

to your problem.

- What do you mean?

- Well, I know you're
going to miss the car,

but I don't want you to miss
the fresh air and the attention.

So I've got a little
surprise for you.

- For me?
What is it?

- Well, come on out in the
back, and I'll show you.

Oh, here, this is for you, too.

- This?
What's this?

- Oh, come on.

Don't ask many questions.

- Uh, Harriet--

- Hi, Mom.

- Hello, dear.

- Oh, hi, Rick.

How did you make
out with your bikes?

- Not so good.

I guess nobody
wants to buy them.

- Oh--
- Ozzie, are you coming?

- Oh, uh, uh, yes.

Uh, uh, pardon me, son.

I'll see you in a minute.

[music playing]

- Hey, Ricky, come here.

- What's going on around here?

Everybody's acting so goofy.

Mom just rushed out the
back door with a big grin

on her face.

- Mom has a little
surprise for Pop.

And I have a little
surprise for you, too.

- I hope it's a good one.

I haven't had any luck
in selling the bikes.

I've been all over town, too.

- That's the surprise.

I sold them.

- You're kidding.

- Here, does this
look like I'm kidding?

It's a $10 bill.

- You're kidding.

- Here, take it.

It's yours.

[music playing]

- You're not kidding.

- Of course I'm not.

- Now I can get my racing bike.

- You got enough for
the down payment?

- Sure.

Heck, with this and
my $10 commission

from Doc Williams' car.

- What do you mean,
your commission?

- I was the one who gave Mr.
Hotchkiss the phone number.

I cinched the deal.

- You can't take
any money for that.

Doc's phone number was printed
right on "For Sale" sign.

- Who's talking about
Doc's phone number?

I gave him the girl's number.

The tall one's my math teacher.

- Boy, you sure play the angles.

- Who'd you sell our
old bikes to anyway?

- Mom bought them.

- Mom?

She buy both of them?

- Sure.

- I don't get it.

How come she bought 'em?

- Well, she wanted them.

I think it was a swell
idea of Mom's, something

to make Pop happy and us, too.

Of course, I did all
the mechanical work

for a small consideration.

- What are you talking about?

- There they go now.
[music playing]

- Hey, how about that?

- Pretty neat, eh?

Our two old bikes
made into one new one.

- You know, David, if I
were the sentimental type,

I could say something right now.

- Go ahead.

Indulge yourself.

- OK, I will.

After all these
years, Mom and Pop

are still goin' around together.

[laughs]

[music playing]

[car approaching]

- Hi, Oz.

- Oh, hi, Thorny.

I wondered who that
was backing in there.

- Looks like you're busy.

- Yeah, I'm just
painting this a little.

That guy Hotchkiss really
rammed into this door.

- Looks like you're touching
it up pretty good, though.

- Thanks.

- Uh, say, Oz, you got
to stop for a minute.

There's something
I got to tell you.

- Well, can't you
tell me while I paint?

- Well, OK.

Tell me honestly,
now, would you really

have let me borrow the
sports car occasionally

if you'd bought it?

- Well, of course, I
would have, Thorny.

You know that.

After all, we're good
friends and neighbors.

Of course, I suppose that's easy
to say since I didn't buy it.

- Well, it's easier for me
to say because I did buy one.

- You're kidding.
- Nope.

I went out and
bought a sports car.

I figured, we ought to have
one in the neighborhood.

[laughs]

- Oh.

- [laughs]

- How about this?

- Actually, it belongs
to my boy, Will,

but he said we could borrow it.

- Well, this is a--

uh, does it have any wheels?

[laughter]

- Of course, it's not the
same model that Doc's was.

- Well no, but you get the
same fresh air and sunshine.

- Sure.

[chuckles] Hop in and
see how she handles.

- Oh, great.

- No, no-- the doors
don't open, Oz.

It's made real solid.

- Hey, this is a real kick.

- Hey, just a second, Oz.

Here--

- Oh, first class equipment.

Where's the starter?

- Oh, right over there.

- Oh.

[starts engine]

Ah.

- Hey, what do you
two sports got here?

- It's Mr. Thornberry's new car.

- It looks like one of
the original chariots from

"Ben-Hur."

[laughter]
- Just keep an eye on us, Rick.

It's a real dynamo.

- Stand back, son.

[honks horn]
