When she came out of the woods...

[ screams ]

...She was different.

This girl's acting possessed.

That scared the [bleep] out of me.

♪♪

It looked like every horror movie I'd ever seen,

And he said, "you can't see them?"

A shadow in the shape of a person...

Go away!

I was terrified.

We received a call that there was an explosive device.

The dog went crazy. He was spooked.

His ears were back.

There's something here that we can't see.

That's when I saw a figure,

And when I saw that, it was terrifying.

There was nothing wrong with her physically.

This is paranormal.

I have not seen anything like this before.

The sky is made of circles.

It is hurting me!

This felt like the story of the boy who cried wolf,

But this night

There actually was a wolf.

[ growls ]

[ siren wails ] -oh, my god!

Man: 911, please state your emergency.

Woman: I think it's a ghost!

[ growls ] -[ screams ]

[ gunshot ]

[ screams ]

♪♪

♪♪

[ indistinct whispering ]

♪♪

[ distorted voice ]

Go away!

[ distorted voice ]

[ line ringing ]

Narrator: In the early morning hours,

Veteran police officer scott davis is on routine patrol

In his sleepy new jersey town.

I became a cop because I grew up in the town where I work,

And I really had a good, positive experience

With the police officers that were there growing up.

[ siren wailing ]

A call had come in that a gentleman had called 911

And stated that there were people in his home.

I checked the computer where we can pull up information

On previous calls.

Other police officers had been there prior,

And they had marked it as a possible mental-health issue.

I wanted to do a perimeter search of the house,

And I was looking for any broken windows,

Any forced entry into the doors

And look into the windows better before I made entry.

Narrator: While he finds no signs of forced entry,

He's caught off guard by what he overhears coming from inside.

I could hear talking coming from inside the house.

As I looked in the window, I couldn't see anybody,

But I was sure that I heard somebody speaking,

And I thought that was kind of strange

Because I knew the gentleman was alone.

I needed to get into the house quicker.

Narrator: Knowing the caller is elderly

And could possibly have mobility issues,

He knocks and lets himself in.

♪♪

♪♪

♪♪

As he reaches the living room, he spots the caller all alone.

No sign of anyone to explain the conversation

He overheard from outside.

In fact, the man seems to be in a near-catatonic state.

As I took in this whole scene,

The gentleman sitting in the chair,

Staring into nothing, it became overwhelmingly creepy,

And it looked like every horror movie I'd ever seen.

[ gasps ] did you see them?

Who am I supposed to see, sir?

I asked him where the possible subject was.

You didn't see him?

And he looked back and me and said, "you can't see them?"

♪♪

No, I didn't see anything, sir.

They're here!

At that point, I thought back to it being a mental-health issue,

But I also wanted to make sure the house was absolutely clear.

I'll take a look, okay?

-Okay. -Okay.

-Just relax, sir. -Okay.

Davis: I told the gentleman that I would check his house

For him to give him peace of mind.

I decided to take a walk through the home.

It wasn't a very big house,

So there wasn't much space to check.

The only thing that I found strange was,

There was no television or radio that I could see in that room.

Narrator: Meaning the voices could not have

Come from electronic sources.

Willing to give the old man the benefit of the doubt,

He ventures deeper into the house.

[ door creaks ]

Davis: I got down the hallway that led into a back bedroom.

♪♪

I checked the closet and any of the other spaces

That somebody could possibly be hiding,

And then I thought I saw

A shadow in the shape of a person.

I looked over, and it was completely gone.

♪♪

I was unable to find anything or anyone that was unusual.

-Unit 22. -Go ahead.

No sign of intrusion.

House is clear. Moving out.

Woman: Copy that, 22. Dispatch, out.

Sir, I didn't see anything.

There's no one here.

When I was done, I came back out,

And I told the gentleman that I was unable to find anybody.

You sure?

There's nobody here, sir.

I checked the whole house.

Okay?

However, I told him to feel free

To call us back if the people returned.

You have a good night, okay?

For someone such as a police officer

To respond to a location,

Someone who has a very analytical mind,

A very objective mind,

They're looking for real, live human beings.

When you can't find anything missing or wrong

And the house seems to be secure,

One of the things that comes across your mind

Is maybe they are just lonely.

It's fairly common for us to find people

That are lonely that just need somebody to talk to.

Woman: Unit 22.

Yeah?

Return to current location immediately, 911 call.

♪♪

[ distorted voice ]

The voices that I was hearing were completely different.

Sir, who are you talking to?

The dark shadow!

So when I entered the room and I saw the gentleman

Still in his chair,

I asked him about the voices that I heard,

And the gentleman replied to me that that was the shadow people,

[ distorted voice ]

And this is where I caught the glimpse of something.

I thought that I saw a shadow at the end of the hallway.

This sort of felt like the story of the boy who cried wolf,

But this night there actually was a wolf.

[ distorted voice ]

Narrator: Responding to a frantic 911 call

Of a home invasion,

Veteran cop scott davis checks in

On an old man known to police for making bogus calls,

But this time his claim that he's being terrorized

By shadow people seems all too real.

I saw what looked to be a shadow,

And it completely filled the door out, top to bottom,

And it moved in a way that I wouldn't say was human.

It was very fluid.

[ distorted voice ]

Keye: Shadow people are an interesting phenomena.

They're dark and menacing.

They are from other planes of existence

That come in to torment the living.

It's very possible that these shadow men

Were talking to the homeowner.

[ distorted voice ]

Davis: I was feeling a great deal of terror and dread.

I didn't know what was going on.

Narrator: But once again the shadowy figure

Has disappeared.

This time I spent a good 15 minutes

Going through everything and anything

That a human being could fit under or inside,

And this time I checked all of the windows

To make sure they were all locked from the inside.

Keye: When shadow figures appear,

It's generally some type of warning.

That spirit just does not want them in their physical space.

Narrator: After sweeping the premises from top to bottom,

The officer is shocked when the voices return.

[ distorted voice ]

The voices that I heard were very low and monotone,

And they were just at the point where I think

That I couldn't understand what they were saying,

But I knew that they were words.

It made the hair on the back of my neck stand up like

I've never felt in my life.

I was terrified.

[ distorted voice ]

And this time I had seen something

That looked like a shadow in the shape of a person.

When you see something like that,

It just shakes you to your core.

♪♪

As I could see it,

The shadow quickly exited down the hallway.

I was unable to rationally think as to what I was seeing.

I took off in a full sprint to chase down whatever

I thought I saw, and it was completely gone.

Spirits are not generally stuck in one particular area

Although that does happen.

Typically they're free to roam.

They can travel through doors and walls

And are not confined by the physical barriers

That humans would be confined to.

♪♪

Go away!

What was that?

The dark shadow!

We didn't talk about how often he saw them,

But I could tell from the call log in the computer

That he must see them pretty often.

This gentleman had been experiencing this activity

For a long period of time.

These entities were coming into his home on a frequent basis,

And he refused to leave.

Although his family were aware of what was going on there,

They refused to come back.

This gentleman stood his ground.

I think you've got to come with me.

I offered him any medical service

If he'd like to go see somebody at the hospital

Or anybody at the crisis intervention.

No, no, no!

He declined it.

He seemed very self-sufficient.

-I'm not leaving! -Sir, look.

No, no! No, no!

I think you need to leave with me.

No, I'm not leaving.

It's not safe for you here anymore.

-I'm not going anywhere. -Is there someone I could call?

They're gone!

They're all gone!

This was this gentleman's home, and he had been there

For a very long time, and he wasn't going to leave

Just because of some paranormal activity that was happening.

Unit 22, are you available for service?

I'm not going.

Unit 22, officer davis, clearing out.

Copy that, 22.

Everybody has to make up their own mind

On what they're able to tolerate as far as a haunting goes.

Narrator: The paranormal experience

Has such a profound effect on the officer,

He is compelled to respond to future 911 calls

With an open mind and total acceptance.

From that call on, I definitely do a little bit

More to pay attention to what the call is,

And I especially pay attention to what the caller has to say

Because, since then, I've run into more people

Who talk about paranormal things

That are happening in their home,

And I want to make sure that I listen to all of the details.

These days when I drive by that house,

I slow down just to look in

To see I can see anything else happening in there.

Man: Have you seen anything?

I haven't seen anything.

Since this incident happened,

I think the gentleman passed away.

The house is cleaned up,

And we haven't had any more reports of shadow people.

Can you hear me?

Unit 44, headed there now.

Narrator: Rookie paramedic angelo hofilena and his partner

Respond to the frantic 911 call.

The 911 call came in as a pediatric psych

That a father had called in for his daughter

Experiencing some kind of psychiatric episode.

Narrator: With a storm ripping through the countryside,

All available units are tied up,

Meaning that if angelo and his partner

Get into a difficult situation, they're on their own.

Unit 44, arrived at the scene.

10-4, unit 44. Take caution.

Patient is exhibiting erratic behavior.

Narrator: With a potential for the patient

To cause harm to herself

Or to others, the paramedics know they have to act quickly.

The place where we went to is very secluded and very isolated,

Something we're not really used to going to.

Thank god. Come here.

Come in. Please come in.

Hofilena: The house looked like it was very close

To being abandoned or foreclosed.

It had a bit of a creepy and a spooky vibe.

Please, please hurry.

Baby, baby, there's some men here to see you.

We'd like to talk to you for a few minutes.

She gave off a very strange vibe that something was a little off.

The sky is made of circles.

Hofilena: We were assuming that maybe she was doing drugs.

The sky is made of circles.

Hofilena: She was saying words. It just didn't quite make sense.

It felt like everything was jumbled

And confusing in her head,

So I was starting with very basic questions --

"how old are you? Where are you right now?

What day is it? What's your name?"

What's your name?

[ deep voice ] dakota.

Dakota.

[ breathing heavily ] no.

And she even said a different name.

-Her name is rebecca. -[ screams ]

No, that isn't my name! That's not my name!

-Whoa, whoa, whoa. -That's not my name!

It's okay. It's okay. It's okay. It's okay.

Hofilena: She screamed...

That's not my name!

...Saying, "that's not my name. That's not who I am."

That's not my name! No, it isn't my name!

It's okay. It's okay.

Like she was having difficulty accepting

Or hearing that name.

That's not my name!

-Yeah. -It's okay. It's okay.

Follow it.

Normally when you take drugs, you can see it in their eyes.

Like, are their eyes dilated?

She was textbook.

There was nothing wrong with her physically.

She believed that she was not herself

And that she was, in fact, dakota.

What she was going through

Was complete personality disattachment.

She was really not herself.

The father said this odd behavior started

When she disappeared in the woods.

Hofilena: He said that when she came out of the woods,

She was different.

♪♪

Narrator: As well as fearing for the girl's mental state,

Angelo was concerned with the presence

Of deep scratches all over her forearms.

♪♪

The scratches that I saw on her, they came in threes,

So it was kind of like a claw with three nails.

Do you have any cats or dogs in the house?

No animals.

Hofilena: Usually if a person does it,

It's kind of wide and obvious

And, you know, a lot of skin tears.

At this point, it is a complete mystery what's going on.

I'm gonna get you fixed up, okay?

Just hang tight.

Angelo.

She called out my name, which was something very unusual.

Angelo.

Hofilena: It's protocol that we don't use our real names

During a call for privacy reasons.

We don't wear name tags, and she guessed my name.

Angelo.

[ distorted voice ] is it really over

Between you and your girlfriend?

♪♪

I'd just gone through a breakup.

♪♪

How would she have known that?

Angelo.

I started thinking, "this is paranormal," at this point.

I had no idea what I was walking into.

This one call was unlike anything

I've ever experienced before.

[ groaning ]

Hofilena: She just drops down.

The situation had gotten out of hand.

[ screaming ]

It completely freaked me out.

Narrator: A 911 call leads rookie paramedic angelo hofilena

And his partner outside the city limits

To the home of a frantic father...

Please hurry.

Narrator: ...Whose teenage daughter, rebecca,

After disappearing for hours in thick woods,

Has returned with mysterious claw marks on her arms,

Uncanny knowledge of things she shouldn't know...

Is it really over between you and your girlfriend?

...And shocking physical abilities.

That's not my name!

[ grunting ]

Angelo.

Hofilena: I have not seen anything like this before.

I started thinking, "this is paranormal," at this point.

Like, there's something here that I've never seen,

And I've seen a lot of psychiatric patients.

She had bent backwards.

Angelo.

This person is speaking in a very bizarre way

And moving in a very unnatural way.

We decided this person needs help,

So we decide that it's time to go.

Angelo.

Narrator: Having taken their assessment as far as they can,

Angelo needs to get her to a specialist

Before someone gets hurt.

Hofilena: Yeah, it was pretty terrifying.

She would definitely need to see someone

Who could maybe diagnose her more effectively.

Angelo.

As we were getting ready to go,

Thinking that we have this under control,

She's, you know, she's gonna come with us,

You know, she's gonna cooperate...

[ groaning ]

...Suddenly she dropped down again.

[ growling ]

[ speaking foreign language ]

She was speaking in a certain way that didn't make any sense.

I was starting to come to the conclusion

That this person might actually be possessed

By some kind of demon or demons.

Estep: Possession is an act of pure aggression and violation.

An entity invades the body,

The mind, the being of a living person.

The phenomena of speaking in tongues

And the physical contortions, these are all displays of power.

The demonic entity is showing off.

"you're insignificant to me."

[ screams ] our father, who art in heaven...

Narrator: Rebecca's father is forced to accept that

His beloved daughter

Is being overtaken by a demonic power that must be cast out.

I'm gonna go get the stretcher.

Why did you leave me?

It completely freaked me out,

That she was speaking like a very young girl.

Why did you leave me?

The voice had gotten a little bit more high-pitched,

And the questions were more

What you'd expect a curious 9 to 11-year-old to say.

Man: That must have been kind of freaky.

It was definitely a little freaky.

Let's go to the hospital. Okay? Just come on.

Hofilena: I believe this entity was trying to open up

Some kind of a way to jump to me.

Angelo, come sit in the back with me.

That scared the [bleep] out of me.

Demonic entities are very cunning and manipulative

Like a paranormal shark,

A natural predator that has no compassion,

That is completely inhuman.

It doesn't care if you live or die

So long as it gets what it wants.

[ siren wailing ]

Narrator: Convinced the demon inside the girl

Poses him a serious threat, angelo elects to drive.

He's determined to finish the job he was sent to do.

Hofilena: I wanted her to get treatment.

I wanted her to not struggle with herself.

Man: What did the doctors conclude?

I mean, did you get any feedback

From what happened to her after that?

Once we transferred care to the hospital,

That was the last time I saw her to this day.

Man: You don't know what happened to her?

I'm pretty convinced now that this was a demonic possession.

[ howling ]

Hofilena: What really bugs me is,

I really want to know what happened to my patient.

♪♪

I'd never experienced anything like this.

♪♪

[ screaming ]

[ alarm blaring ]

♪♪

Narrator: Late into his graveyard shift,

Security officer andy billington patrols

The largest mall in birmingham.

♪♪

There was quite a lot of responsibilities,

Patrolling the shopping center, day and night,

Opening and closing it to the public,

Deliveries to the shops within the center.

I'm heading down to the lower level now.

Narrator: Having cleared all shoppers out

Of the mall several hours ago,

Andy is unclear as to who

Or what could've set off the alarm.

Woman: 1033 in zone h5, lower level.

Control had radioed me to say one of the alarms was activating

At basically the end of this walkway.

Narrator: For andy, criminal activity is nothing new

At the mall.

On a daily basis, we would encounter

Numerous shoplifters,

Fights, public-order offenses, drunkenness.

Narrator: If there is an illegal trespasser

Hiding on the premises,

The experienced security officer is trained to deal

With a possibly violent confrontation.

I got to the end of the walkway where I had to turn...

♪♪

...And that's when I saw a figure.

I think I see someone. I'm on my way.

Narrator: But somehow andy seems to be the only one that sees it.

The whole section is clear.

There's nothing showing on camera.

♪♪

There were sensor alarms on the door,

Sensor alarms within the shopping center.

Basically nobody could've got out after the center was closed

If there was somebody still in there without us knowing.

Narrator: Leading officer billington

To one conclusion --

The trespasser is still inside the building.

♪♪

With only one way in or out of the hallway,

The intruder is trapped.

♪♪

And approaching zone h5.

Narrator: He moves in to where the alarm was tripped,

Fully expecting to corner his intruder.

♪♪

When I got there, there was no sign of anybody.

I know I saw a figure.

There was a camera situated there,

And the controller did look all around with that camera

And couldn't see anything.

Doors all locked, so we knew nobody was there,

But there was no way they could've got past me.

There's no way anybody could've got past me.

Narrator: Unable to make sense of how the intruder

He saw could've gotten away,

He moves deeper into the basement,

Desperate to find his man.

The basement was in two parts.

There were areas that were rather spooky.

You would hear creaks and groans.

And then you'd think to yourself, "well, what was that?"

♪♪

I'm arriving in the area now.

Woman: We're following you on camera, andy.

Narrator: Andy sees the same figure again.

I definitely saw this figure.

I definitely saw a figure.

I radioed the control to turn that camera.

It was pointing in the other direction

From where this figure was.

Narrator: Again, control sees nothing.

♪♪

I'm in pursuit. I'm in pursuit!

Andy, I've got nothing here.

Where are you running to?

Narrator: Hot on his trail, andy follows the trespasser

To a small office at the end of the hallway but to no avail.

♪♪

There was nobody there.

The controller was saying couldn't see anybody,

But I was insisting I had.

[ alarm blaring ]

That's when the alarm goes off.

Narrator: One that signals a much darker,

More terrifying danger.

Code 10 bomb threat, zone three.

We received a call that there was an explosive device

Planted on one of the floors of the shopping center.

I contacted the bomb-disposal squad.

Narrator: The only conclusion the officer can draw

Is that the bomb was planted by the figure he saw.

It was a dangerous situation, and we did take it seriously.

Narrator: He heads back up to meet with the bomb squad.

♪♪

But instead is greeted by a mysterious figure.

I could see this person sat there.

Narrator: In the brighter light, he finally recognizes the man.

It's biggles.

I thought it was somebody we named biggles.

He was an elderly gent.

That's who I thought he was.

I radioed the controller.

I says, "can you put the camera

Onto this particular area?"

Camera pan to northwest corner.

The controller said, "there's nobody there."

Narrator: But the information control passes next

Chills him to the bone.

I was told that biggles had passed away some months

Before this incident.

He was found by a nearby railway station

Where some homeless people used to sleep.

I was completely perplexed.

I definitely saw this figure.

♪♪

Narrator: When an alarm mysteriously goes off

After hours at a large indoor mall

In England, security officer

Andy billington corners an intruder that soon vanishes

And fails to appear on any of the security footage.

When a second alarm goes off, andy comes face-to-face

With his intruder,

A man called biggles

Who may have just planted a bomb on the premises.

We received a call that there was an explosive device

Planted on one of the floors of the shopping center.

Narrator: When the police bomb squad arrives,

They bring with them a canine unit.

We were there to assist the police with their duties.

Okay. Let's go.

I met them and escorted them into the shopping center

To where it was.

Narrator: Pushing all thoughts of biggles aside,

Andy leads the canine unit through its search.

♪♪

Obviously, it's a different ball game

If the shopping center had been

And there was members of the public there.

It would've been obviously a massive evacuation obviously.

♪♪

Narrator: Following a strong scent,

The sniffer dog leads the officers

Into the unoccupied storefront.

We walked in there. We were feeling very uneasy.

♪♪

Narrator: While they found no trace of explosives,

The dog has clearly caught the scent of something unusual.

♪♪

Animals are amazing because they absolutely perceive way

More than we do on multiple levels --

Sound, smell, and sight.

[ barking, growling ]

We were feeling, "this is really freaky."

It really spooked me.

Narrator: But security footage confirms

There's no one hiding in the room.

♪♪

We was perplexed by why the dog would behave like that.

[ growling ]

Narrator: Growing increasingly agitated,

The dog leads the unit up to the second floor.

Billington: When we walked up the escalator,

The dog unit went first.

The dog got to the top of the elevator.

He just went...

He just freaked,

A vicious growl.

He was spooked. His ears were back.

All his fur was on end, and he was just going ballistic.

[ barking ]

I was convinced that the dog was seeing something.

♪♪

Narrator: He's not the only one.

♪♪

I distinctly saw somebody standing probably 15 feet away.

[ barking ]

When we get a negative entity in a space,

Sometimes what'll happen, especially if it's territorial,

You're bringing in an animal that is also territorial,

So what can happen is ultimately conflict.

Narrator: But other than the dog,

Only andy sees the source of that conflict,

Which suddenly vanishes.

[ barking ]

He was just transfixed with that area,

And the longer that went on,

The more then started to even more believe

That there's something here.

Narrator: The dog works frantically

To pick up the scent.

He went from walking to this almost frenzied state.

Narrator: As the dog leads the men into a public wash room,

The canine team are at a loss

As to who or what is setting him off.

We walked in there. We were feeling very uneasy.

Narrator: With the still all-too-real

Threat of finding a bomb,

The lights start to falter.

Oftentimes, what we'll see is entities that are --

That can manipulate, for example,

Electromagnetic fields.

We have seen this relationship with entities in the past.

[ barking ]

Narrator: And that's when biggles resurfaces.

I did realize when I saw that figure

That it wasn't something of this world.

Was a genuine device, but it wasn't active.

Narrator: Ensuring it's fully defused,

The bomb unit removes the device.

And at that, we retreated.

Okay. Let's go. Get out of here then. Okay.

Billington: Resuming regular protocol, main floor.

Narrator: With the canine unit gone,

The officer resumes his night patrol.

Now convinced why the ghost of biggles

Has returned to the mall.

The entity, by triggering the alarms,

May have actually been trying to get the people out of the space,

So it could've had, in its intent, the idea of,

"okay. If I just set these off,

Then it will get these people out faster."

♪♪

It's biggles.

I think it was biggles.

I think it was his spirit keeping the place safe,

Keeping people safe there.

It sounded very much like the homeless man

Was very attached to the people that were there.

It sounded like he knew them extremely well

Because he spent a lot of time there,

So it makes a lot of sense that a entity like that

Would maybe want to come back and just say goodbye.

Billington: Yeah, it did make me a believer because I thought,

"there's no way."

I know what I saw.

I'd say to anybody who doesn't believe,

I'd say, "when it happens to you,

You will be a different person."
