Ryder was born with a rare genetic disease called VLCAD.

When Ryder has fevers, it can turn into metabolic crises

where she could go into shock.

And he's going to his first dance tomorrow.

When Zach and I got back from Vegas,

I started taking pregnancy tests non-stop.

My last pregnancy test that I took,

I saw a second line, a very faint line.

So I went into the doctor's office.

And she said, let's give you a blood test,

which will indicate if you are pregnant or not.

I'm just waiting for the blood work to come back.

I think obviously, we would be really, really happy

and excited.

But right now, I have to focus on Ryder and her health.

Ryder has been complaining about her chest.

She does routine EKGs and heart echoes.

With VLCAD, it can trigger other things.

So we do do these routine checkups just to make sure

that her heart isn't enlarged.

It's not going too fast, it's not going too slow.

- ♪ Can you feel my heartbeat? ♪

- Hey. - What's up?

How'd that doctor visit go?

- The nurse did her EKG, comes back, and goes,

"So the doctor's gonna come in to see you."

In all these-- - [groans]

- All these years, no doctor has ever come in to see me.

So then the doctor comes in and basically explained

that they ran the test twice,

and they found something irregular.

She's like, "You guys need to go in this week

to see a cardiologist."

So Ryder has another appointment in two days.

- Oh, my goodness.

So I mean, I've been down that road with my, uh--

I've done an open heart surgery before.

And it's never fun.

And it's scary, you know?

- You think your heart's going fast?

a little bit more freedom and learn independence.

But at the same time, we--we are

not sure that she understands her muscular dystrophy.

The football game made me realize

that maybe she's not ready to make the safest decisions.

And maybe she doesn't completely understand

her diagnosis with muscular dystrophy.

So I think we get to talk about going to the game.

Your doctor said if you're walking long distances,

you use your wheelchair. - OK, fine.

Then I just won't go to the games then.

- What is wrong with walking around with the wheelchair?

- 'Cause I don't need to.

If I don't need to, I'm not going to.

It's not as far as you think.

It's really not.

- You have to think about your future, too.

- Well, I know.

- 'Cause I'm telling you, I don't need it all the time.

I'm telling you, I didn't need it at the football game.

- You're not supposed to over-fatigue yourself,

but you do.

- Your doctor even said that you're not supposed to

because it can ruin your muscles.

What you need to realize is that

you do have muscular dystrophy.

And if you do too much, it becomes life threatening.

You know, you weren't supposed to live to the age of 16

at first, right?

And then after our parents followed the rules

and have helped you, you are able to.

If you continue to know what's better for you,

you'll be able to live a healthy, normal life.

- But I know what's better for me, Aleeah.

They're not letting me do what I know.

- I promise you, your mom knows more than you do know.

- No, I promise you, my mom doesn't know my body

the way I know my body.

- Did she not fall in the kitchen the other day?

muscular dystrophy and not.

When you hit that water, you immediately wiped out.

So when you fall, you don't, like, catch yourself naturally.

- There are things I have observed and I know her dad has

observed that we--we know it's gonna be way safer

and easier for her to get around

by utilizing her wheelchair.

Ali has, like, covered up anger for a while,

not being able to do certain things.

And now she's in a mindset,

"I'm gonna do it whether you like it or not."

Corey and I have conversations all the time about this.

If me and her dad could have this conversation with her,

it just shows, even though we're in separate homes,

we come together.

We're a united front.

I just--I think as her mom, I want to keep her safe.

With Ryder having VLCAD, it's not anything that we can cure.

It's basically off of her genetics.

Now, I think we're at this point of, like,

she's getting taller, she's doing more sports,

she's more active.

Her body is starting to hurt more.

She's starting to complain more about her joints being sore.

Now, with her complaining about her chest and her heart,

we've never had to deal with this before.

and she did really good.

So the structure of her heart is great.

Now we have to rule out that there's no cardiac problems.

So she has to wear the heart monitor for two weeks,

'cause if it's cardiac problems,

then when she does high energy things,

her heart will react to it, versus anxiety.

- Is Ryder in the car?

- Yeah, she can hear you.

- Yeah, I heard all of it.

It was a little scary?

- It was scary, but not too scary.

- I know you might be a little nervous

because you have to wear a heart monitor,

but that's just giving them more information.

And it has my anxiety through the roof.

I don't want to scare her, even though I'm scared.
