All language subtitles for 12.03 - The Download

Downloading.

This might not seem like it deserves its

own module, but there's a few tips and

tricks that I've learned throughout the years that

have really helped my process.

They've really helped me make sure I don't

miss anything.

They've helped me make sure my files are

all redundant and they've helped held me accountable.

So first thing I do when I get

home from a wedding is I take the

memory card, the full memory cards container, and

I count how many memory cards we filled

up.

In this case, all the memory cards that

are facing forwards we filled up and all

the memory cards that are facing backwards are

still empty.

So we filled up one, two, three, four,

five, six, seven.

We filled up seven memory cards.

So I know that I have to have

seven memory cards downloaded and I double and

triple check this because it is my worst

fear losing images from a wedding.

I've lost images from a family shoot before,

but I've never lost images from a wedding.

And it's because I use these systems.

So when we download, we download onto two

hard drives.

So we download onto a working drive.

We call this our working drive.

That means we work on it.

We do all the editing and the post

-production on this drive.

But at the same time as I'm downloading

on this drive, I'm downloading on a drive

like this at the exact same time.

So it's actually backing the files up to

both drives at the same time.

I use photomechanic for downloading and this drive,

once I've got all the files downloaded onto

it, it goes into another location.

It doesn't even stay in our house so

that if our house explodes or we have

a house fire, I know I've got these

images somewhere else backed up.

So we keep this at a separate location.

Now when I download, I download into the

same root folder every single time and I

label the same, I label this root folder

the same every time.

So it is the reverse date.

So in this case, 2021, the month, 11,

dash, the day, 21, then I do partner

A's name, Jenna, dash, partner B's name, Will,

dash, event, in this case, wedding.

So 2021, 11, 21, Jenna, Will, wedding.

This is important because once we're done with

the workflow and I back up this wedding

on archive drives or on Dropbox, I can

eat, you know, 20 years from now even,

I can easily go and find this wedding's

photos if I needed to.

All I need to know is the wedding

date.

Now within that root folder, before I start

downloading, I create seven sub folders.

And the reason I create seven is because

we filled up seven cards.

And I simply name them card one, card

two, card three, card four, card five, card

six, card seven.

And I download each card into a separate

sub folder.

I never used to do this, but it

became really tricky when I had a corrupt

file or when I realized I was missing

like two or three images.

When I had all those all those images

in the same folder, it would be tricky

to figure out what camera it was from

and what card it was from.

So plus it holds me accountable, right?

I can look in every single folder, double

check the amount of images, make sure it

matches the amount of images we should have,

and make sure I haven't missed a card.

So that's really important.

The next thing I do is a little

trick that I learned from my friend Fundy

and this is time syncing the images.

So Lani and I used four cameras on

this wedding and one of them was a

rental.

And we often forget to time sync our

cameras at the beginning of a wedding day.

And that that makes it really tricky later

on for the culling and when we're trying

to sort the images into the correct order

for when we deliver them.

So I've learned this trick from Fundy and

that is that we take a photo of

our iPhone.

That's my iPhone.

Here it is.

So there's this app that I've got called

Clocks.

And it shows me the exact time to

the exact second.

So I take a picture of this screen

with each of the four cameras.

And then later on when we when we

import those photos into Photo Mechanic, we don't

have to worry about time syncing the cameras.

We can sync them using this clock here.

So you'll notice here at the beginning of

each card, I have a picture of a

clock and this is just the clock on

my iPhone.

And I've I've taken it to the exact

second.

So that way when I come into Photo

Mechanic here, with card one, I can just

select all the images.

I can go to tools.

I can say adjust capture dates and times.

All right, and I can set this to

the exact date.

So it was it's 2020.

It was the 11th month.

It was the 21st day.

And it was nine oh three oh six

And it was a.m. So 2020, 11,

21.

I'm just double checking this nine oh three

oh six.

And you can see that it's going to

be just the time by minus one hour

plus three minutes.

And when I click adjust photos, it's going

to do that for all the photos within

that card.

It takes a little bit of time.

And I've found a lot more success with

this method.

As opposed to trying to make sure all

the cameras are the exact same time because

inevitably by the time we get to the

end of the day, I'm not sure what

happens, but they're always off by a few

seconds.

This is like a fail proof method here.

Okay, and now I'm going to do that

for the rest of the cards.

So those are some tips and tricks about

the downloading process and that's all done before

we even start culling.
