Obviously, I'm a local lad.

I'm here to tell you about me life
and me boxing career.

I was born on
a beautiful little council estate

called Hattersley.
(SOME CHEERING)

Don't worry lads,
I'll put me foot down,

try and hurry up, because I know
you've got your fucking tags on.

How old would he have been there?
That's his school photograph.

Looked like Bart Simpson,
don't you think?

Look at his hair!

It was always spiky,
you couldn't get it to lie down,

could you?
Don't know what that is.

That's the card that we sent him
the first time he ever fought
for England.

"Dear Richard, and all good wishes,
hope you do the business. Love,
Mum and Dad and Matthew."

When Richard was actually born,

he was nine pound eight,

first child, and forceps delivery,

which consequently gave him
two little bruises there.

And they said, "You've given birth
to a right bruiser.

He looks as if he could be
a boxer." How weird is that?

And he had very hairy arms.
He was like that.

I thought she'd give birth
to an orangutan
when I saw him the first time.

It was good as a youngster
on the estate. Everyone was mates.

Everyone knew everybody.

I still live five minutes
from where I was born on Hattersley.

(MAN) Everybody loved the Hattons,
how they lived their life and stuff.

He was a good footballer as well,
you know.

We used to organise
football tournaments

and if you didn't have Rick
on your side,

your ankles would be black and blue.

Fuckin' telling you.
He'd tackle a 16-year-old kid

and knock him six foot in the air.
Somersault job.

He was strong as an ox for his age.

If you didn't pick him on your team,
you were fucked.

It's madness to think
one day me dad just said, "Rick,

why don't you go to the boxing club?
Give it a go, see how it is."

So I got in the ring,
had a bit of a spar with this kid.

I can't remember who it was,
but he was more experienced than me.

And he went 'ding' and he hit me,
and I thought,

"Ooh, you dickhead, oh!"
It wound me up!

And then I'd come... it took me
two, three, four times to come,

and then I started
getting the better of him.
And when I got the better of him,

I felt 10 feet tall. I thought,
"Oh my god.

Only about three weeks ago
he was knocking lumps out of me,

and look at him now!"
I was hooked then.

I was hooked on the sport.

(MC) Contest number eight

(MOTHER) I was worried.

I can't imagine a mum
having a young baby

and a toddler and thinking,
"I want him to be a boxer."

(MC) Referee has stopped the contest
and the winner,

Hatton in the blue corner.

We thought, just a bit of a...
what's the word, a bit of a phase.

But I could see
he was... he was good.

We supported him.

Down in the pub we used to own,

we even had a little gym with a bag
and a speedball

put down in the cellar.

You'd be upstairs in the pub
and you'd just hear, bang! Bang!

You'd think, "What's the noise?"
Ricky downstairs banging the bags.

Go on, Rick!

The thing about boxing, ultimately
your job to knock your opponent out,

to hurt your opponent.

But I mean, it's very addictive.

I don't know whether
I was always using boxing

to try and disguise the weaknesses
I had in my head.

It give me such confidence.

(MC) Richard Hatton,

When I was at school, I used to say
to the teachers, "I'm gonna be
a world champion, me."

"Really? Alright, well, I've got
news for you, you're in detention,
you little shit."

But when I left school,

I knew I wanted to go professional.

I think it was
because Manchester was at a stage

where it was the capital
of British boxing.

..at the heart of a rejuvenation
of boxing in the city of Manchester.

Boxing is all about romance.

Cos every single week
there's a fairytale.

The kid with no chance
gets somewhere against the odds.

In the '90s
some really good fighters

were coming up from the Phoenix Gym
on the outskirts of Manchester.

We're the best around here by far.
We've got world-class fighters

in this gym. Champions.
Know what I mean? Champions to be.

That was set up
by a man called Billy Graham.

Decided to try and start a gym
on me own. Obviously got no money,

but just went for it and got myself
in a load of debt and got a gym.

I knew Billy before I knew Ricky.
I used to go round his house

on a Saturday night for a booze-up.

(HALF-SNORTS WITH LAUGHTER)

(MAN) Is he on drugs?
I could do with some!

His snakes and all that.
He was a one-off.

A complete one-off.

No-one knew then that eventually
Billy would become crucial

to Ricky Hatton.

(OASIS SONG ENDS)

Billy and Ricky might just be
one of the greatest success stories

between trainer and boxer.

But years ago,
Billy instantly vanished.

I heard all sorts of things,
Billy was involved
with a religious cult

and he was talking to snakes
somewhere in Georgia.

This is what we kept hearing
about Billy, you know,
that he was speaking in tongues!

Yeah, that's me monkey.
That was when I lived in Salford

on the top floor
of a high-rise block.

He was absolutely fantastic.
I gave him to a zoo,

but he was living with me
for quite a long time.

(MAN) Do you like animals?

I prefer animals to people.

It's the first time I've had to
think about this for a long time.

It's like something what I push out
of me mind, you know what I mean?

I've pushed out of me mind
for years, because for a few years

it destroyed me. You understand?

I wasn't looking for fighters,
that's for sure.

But anyway, the phone went.

"Can Ricky Hatton come down
to the gym and have a workout

to take a look at him, like?"
"Of course."

First shock was how young he looked.
You know what I mean?

Like a little boy.

I took him on the pads.

I couldn't believe
how strong he was.

He was fucking stronger
than what he looked, you with me?

And I thought, "Wow."
And the hair on the back of me neck

stood up, know what I mean?
Cos that happens to me

when I see something what's great.
Know what I mean?

I was nervous at first,
but we sat on the step

outside that Phoenix Gym,
and I'd have a cup of tea

and Billy'd have a fag,

and everything we spoke about
just went "click, click, click."

"What'd you think about that fight?"
"Click, click, click."

I must've had about six brews
and he must've had about 20 fags!

He was loads of fun,
he was dead funny.

I was always laughing at him,
he was always laughing at me.

We was always taking the piss
out of each other.

I remember going home to my missus.

I said, "He's the best kid
I have ever seen."

I said, "He's gonna be
absolutely fucking fantastic."

Billy was blown away with him.
And Richard really, really wanted

to turn pro. And with the boxing,
with Richard,

it goes round about certain kids,

and then
when you've got all the promoters

wanting to sit down and talk to you,

then you realise at that moment

it is becoming real.

Hello mate, sorry,

I'm just
in the middle of filming something.
'Yeah.

What do you need?'
Right. It's Liam Gallagher's
50th birthday tomorrow

and I'd like to get a present
to wish him a happy birthday.

(REPORTER) Frank Warren
is Britain's top boxing promoter

in a big money business.
Quite simply,

promoters hire a venue,
sell the tickets, pay the fighters,

and if there's anything left
they make a profit.
I think boxing's

absolute entertainment.
And it's all down to money.

It's always down to money.

In order to be a professional boxer
you gotta be able to sell yourself.

And Frank was the biggest promoter
in the country.

I'd heard about him,
he was a young lad

and I heard he was
quite an exceptional amateur.

I wanted to sign him.

I was delighted, cos I'd gone
from working for me dad

in a carpet shop
for like 150 quid a week, and then

I was fighting and getting a cheque
for three grand.

So I thought,
"That's a bit more like it."

Now a chance to show you
one of the brightest young prospects

in British boxing.
Richard Hatton is his name.

(COMMENTATOR) Watch out for
this fellow, Richard Hatton. I think

he really is
one of the most exciting prospects

we've had over the last decade
or so... (FADES)

(BUNCE) Ricky was made to be
a professional.

He was exciting.
He let his hands go.

He was a whirlwind.

(COMMENTATOR) Mixing it up,
head and body. Doesn't he look
the business?

Getting to Pendleton here
with his body punches early,

it's tremendously impressive.
He goes down under the onslaught.

Ricky was amazing.
And a fantastic body puncher.

One of the best body punchers
I've ever seen.

Just under a minute and a quarter
for him to survive the round,

it'll seem like an eternity.
And another body punch has done him.

And Billy Graham, as a coach,
the perfect match.

They knew each other, they could
read each other like a book.
Billy Graham taught me

it didn't matter whether you
ticked all the boxes and got all
the abilities,

there's someone out there
better than you, so that means

you've got to work harder.
I'm improving
with every training session

with Billy. Believe me
when I tell you,

the best is yet to come.

Right from day one we was talking
about undisputed and all that lot.

We wasn't going to be happy
with anything else.
I think the end might be close here,

he doesn't want anymore.
It's going to be stopped.

He could go here,
chopping right puts him down!

Ricky Hatton is the new

I've never just done one thing.

We were always running
our own business, the pubs

and selling carpets. And if you
wanted to succeed in business

you had to do it well.
We were very lucky,

with hard work,
we were quite successful

at whatever we went into.

Very, very early,
I recognised the value my son was.

Everything went through Ray Hatton.
He was the manager.

Everybody liked him,
but people were suspicious about him

cos in boxing you're suspicious
of newcomers.

That particular time,
I were new to the boxing,

but in my eyes

I had to look at it as business,

that he got as much as he could do

to secure the future for him
and any future family he was having.

Look at the camera. Campbell.
Campbell.

Who's that? Give 'em a smile.

Because he had a son, Campbell.

It was a bit of a shock,
to be honest,

cos it wasn't planned.

And I was still only 20, 21.

I thought, "Oh my god,
I'm gonna be a dad."

Campbell coming into Richard's life
altered his life

to a certain extent,
but it wasn't a dramatic change.

Because -
They didn't live together.
Campbell lived with his mum.

Didn't get married,
he lived with his mum.
He was still there for him,

but I think if you were
to ask Richard now,

he could have been there
a little bit... little bit more.

And I was the most on his case,

because if he wasn't fighting
he'd be going out drinking too much.

Fucking state of that!

The more successful he became,

I was always a little bit concerned

that he didn't get
carried away with it all.

I got given such confidence
in my ability,

but it's like... I was so weak

in other areas, with the lifestyle
away from the gym that I had.

I don't know whether
it's because you get put
in the spotlight a little bit more,

or you're earning
a few more pennies. It adds
a bit more pressure.

The first day, training camps,
we used to dread

what we was going to see.
He walked in

and he was bursting
out of his clothes,
know what I mean? I said,

"You know what? I said you look like
a fucking stand-up comedian
from the '70s."

Ricky Hatton was often 14 stone,
and he fought at 10 stone.

I said, "Let's get you
on the scales, see
what we gotta do." He refused

to get on the scales. So I knew
if he refused to get on the scales,
you know full well what's gone on.

Even though he'd have X amount
of weeks off, he still never started
his training on a Monday,

because Sunday was an all day-er,
and I used to say to Billy,

"Tell him if he's not in Monday,
don't bother coming in

fucking next week."

His dad said, "When he comes in
like that, you should murder him."

You know, punish him. Give him
a really hard workout and punish him

and all that lot. I said,
"What the fuck is that gonna do?

That's just going to make him ill."
It's a strange thing to say,

but he was me best mate,
he was me little brother.

I was fucking worrying more
about the massive fight to come.

I'd won the British title,

but since the day I started,
I wanted to be
the best in the world.

I believed that I was gonna be
a world champion.

At the time, the undisputed champion
was a boxer called Kostya Tszyu.

Kostya Tszyu had been
a brilliant Russian champion.

He was a mainstream star,

he was one of the finest boxers
in the world.

The right hand from Tszyu
was good... and another!

Floors Judah! He's up very quickly.
But it's over!

He had dominated
the light-welterweight division.

He was the man.

Do you fancy your chances now
against the likes of Tszyu.

or do you want to wait
a little longer?

I truly believe I can beat him now,
yeah.

Now?
Yeah, I think I can beat him now,
without a doubt.

I went to Frank Warren. So he said,
"What have you got in your mind,
Ricky?"

I said, "I want to fight
Kostya Tszyu." Believe me, Frank,

the minute you give me the nod,
the belts are coming back
to England. I'm telling you.

I'd fight him tomorrow
if I had the choice.

Kostya Tszyu at that time
was the best in the world.

And I didn't feel it was
the right time.

I think by that time,
I'd had about 38 fights.

"It's a risk." How many fights
do you want me to have
before we take the risk?

In the end, that's a fight
the fans wanted to see. I met Ricky

and looked him in the eye and said,
"Do you really want this fight?"
"Yeah, I want it" That was it.

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome

for the IBF world title,
which takes place in the MEN Arena
in Manchester.

I couldn't believe it.
Over the moon. It was like,

you know, your heart had stopped
a beat just a little bit,

cos you think, "Oh shit."

has got to face. It's gonna be
some night.

The whole of Manchester
were behind me.

But I think there was a tension
in the air.

you've all been waiting for.

I was so nervous.

But just keep your game plan,
keep your cool.

I know it's in front of thousands
of people out there.

I told everybody
he was going to win,

but that was bravado,

you know what I mean?

Because my arse was twitching.

I had him on the ropes
and I went uppercut, uppercut.

It's a pulsating start,
and a highly charged atmosphere

in here, as Hatton

out of Hatton, he doesn't want

I'm looking round and I'm checking
all the time.

The first thing I could do was...

come into it. He was trying
to impress me

with his dance moves
more than anything.

We had a good laugh
from the first day we met.

But I don't think she was
into the boxing.

Bet when she went home
and told her mum,

"I'm going out with a boxer," I bet
her mom thought, "Ooh."

But she was different.

I remember very early on
we had a night out

and he was surrounded by people.

If one person noticed him,
then everybody else would.

It was like the world was watching.

That's what it's like
when they smack ya. All them lights.

He'd beaten Kostya Tszyu. It was
a great success story for everybody.

The brand, the industry
of Ricky Hatton mushroomed.

Mr Richard Hatton,
for services to boxing.

Ricky sort of made it OK
to be off the council estate.

He gave everyone a sense of belief
in themself.

Welcome, please, Ricky Hatton!

Things altered dramatically then,
because everybody

wanted a part of him.

As his father and his advisor,

can it get any better?
Yeah, I think

with the way Richard is and the way
he responds to challenges,

I think this could be the start
of a whole new era, really.

Everything was going well.

But we got to a situation with Frank
sorting out the money side of it.

It was good money.

But Richard was
in a different position, he was
in a different realm there.

(MAN) Did it feel crazy?
Because obviously

you're dealing with
millions of pounds.
Yeah, it gets ridiculous.

But you've gotta realise
what I knew he was worth.

I was looking at what to do next
and then the old man,

he asked for some stupid money.

Listen, we all know you wanna
earn money, but I was pissed off.

I thought, "I've just done this.
Guided you to this.

Got you the opportunity."
And I remember saying to his dad,

"Come on, do what you like.
Fuck you, I'm done,"

because I couldn't
get me head round that.

There's things that happen
in relationships

that probably either party
feel that they weren't fair
because of this,

we weren't fair because of that.

When I first met him, he was his dad
and I got on well with him.

I thought he was OK.

But he changed.
He changed quite a bit.

I think it was inevitable.

Me dad was the one who was
looking after me, talking to Frank.

But when you've beat someone
of the stature of Kostya Tszyu

it wasn't the rise I was expecting.

There was a lot more conversations
about money happening and, you know,

I think Ray wanted
to build a bit of an empire.

A lot's been made about this,

that it's all about money.
It hasn't been all about money,

even though
it's a big consideration.

At that particular time
I'm selling a diamond.

I'm not selling a quartz.
And not to say me son is a product,

but technically it's the same thing,
you're trying to do the best

for that item, or in this case

that person who happens to be
your son.

You're trying to safeguard your son
for the rest of their lives.

So it does make you
a little bit more ruthless.

Look, most boxing promoters
are fucking dogs. Know what I mean?

Most businessmen are dogs. Yeah?

But with Frank Warren,
at least he was a boxing man.

I was always used to say
that after the Kostya Tszyu fight,

that's when the lunatics
finally took over the asylum.

After the Kostya Tszyu fight
I remember someone saying to me,

"Ricky, you've climbed Everest.

How are you going
to motivate yourself

now you've climbed Everest?"

But since the first day
I started...

..I wanted to do what my heroes
had done.

I wanted to top the bill
in Las Vegas.

(MC) Ladies and gentleman,

from the MGM Grand, Las Vegas,
Nevada,

the 'Golden Boy,'

Oscar... De La Ho...ya!

Vegas is like the land
of opportunity for boxing.

If you're inside the ring
at the MGM, you've made it.

You're on the big stage.

Las Vegas was the place.

That's where the money was,

and fighters would say, "OK,

the biggest fighters, the guys
I grew up watching and idolising

were fighting in Las Vegas.

Wow, now I can fight in Las Vegas
too."

When Ricky Hatton beat Kostya Tszyu,

he started to become a name
here in America.

As a promoter, having retired
from boxing,

we knew we had to get our hands
on Ricky Hatton.

I met his father Ray and said,
"Look. Why don't you sit down

with Golden Boy?"
Golden Boy Promotions has promoted

some of the greatest fighters
in the history of boxing.

And sure enough, I set up a meeting

between Oscar and Ray Hatton.

I said, "Let's try to bring
Ricky Hatton over here

to fight the biggest star
at the time."

Are you ready? Who ready?
Cos I'm ready.

I'm so good I can fight...
Floyd Mayweather Jr

through years and years
of doing pads.

And Billy wouldn't let anyone else
do pads.

That felt a bit near the bone,

that I was riddled with injuries,
know what I mean?

And I could tell
Ray Hatton hated me.

You know, Ray Hatton
had been trying to get rid of me

and we're arguing.

At no point
was Billy Graham thought of

being pushed out or moved out.

Billy had been struggling
with his hands.

I said, "When it gets to
some of the hard sessions,

bring somebody in."

I wanted Billy still round the camp,
because of his relationship
with Richard.

The only part I enjoyed
about my job at that time

was when we're training for a fight.

Cos then it was just
kind of me and him.

We just had to really
look at each other,

and we didn't have to say
that much.

I knew everything what he was
feeling. The fear and the nerves,

because it's something like
you've both been working for.

All that time and dreaming about,
talking about.

entering the building,

It was surreal.

You land in Vegas
and the taxi driver says,

"Oh you guys coming from England?
Do you know this guy Ricky Hatton?"

And you're like, "Yeah."

Once we get to Mayweather,
people are remortgaging.

And I just went up before we got

And there was fans up there

There was 10,000 fans there.
10,000 fans for the weigh-in!

That's how confident I was.

I'm terrified,
it was so loud in there,

but you could really
pick out those drums.

It was like war drums.

I was just thinking, don't do it,

to see this.

And straight away,

In the first few rounds,

I was moving in on him quick
and that little dip-jab

that I always liked,
Floyd threw that

He looked troubled by that. It was
a heck of a jab from Hatton

and that has sent the British fans

Everything was sort of like
going to plan.

But I think from a very early part,

whenever Floyd would jab me
I'd move in and the referee would,
"break."

This is what Hatton wanted to do,
to rough him up.

Joe Cortez, the referee,
is very quickly trying

to stop him doing that.
Why did the referee come in there?

The shots are over his head.

He's breaking the action
every other second!

It was ridiculous,
it was disgusting.

Every time he got in close,
he separated them.

I worry for Ricky
when the pace slows.

and he's beginning to pull away.

It was chaos. In 42 fights

I'd never had to say to Ricky,
"They've got you a mile behind

on points.
You've got to knock him out to win."

and Hatton is laid out on the floor!

His eyes are in orbit a bit.

"I'm alright", he says.
What bravery from Hatton.

But maybe the end is close now.

And the dream dies.

I just felt embarrassed.

I just felt
I'd let so many people down.

I was thinking, what am I gonna
explain to me mates, me family,

me friends, Manchester, Hattersley?

What am I gonna...

..it was horrible.

We'd lost. For the first time.

No matter how much you analyse it,

you'd been beaten off
one the best fighters of all time.

We thought we was going to win.

Obviously he's very tired.

After the fight,
I was quite protective of him.

I know how humiliated
he's gonna feel.

So it was a massive fall.

I feel a bit of a mug, to be honest,
because I left myself open to it.

Physically, he had to cope with it,

but mentally,
he had to cope with it.

It was like this fake smile
on his face.

To put it bluntly, it's probably
been a shit day altogether.

That first loss, it's hard
to digest for anybody.

It was tough on all of them.

But I'll tell you from experience,

it's until you lose,
and it's just boxing,

that the fingers get pointed.

"Well, you didn't do this.
You didn't do that."
Then the things start coming out.

Yeah, I was in the changing room
afterwards. It was bad.

Rick come in. He just
couldn't speak to anybody.

All of a sudden, Ray comes in

and absolutely
goes for Billy's throat.

And all you could hear was, Ray,
"It's your fucking fault.

You didn't stick to the plan."
And Billy's saying,

"It's not my fucking fault.
He come out swinging.

He didn't fucking do this.
He wouldn't listen to me."

Blah, blah, blah. Ray said,
"It's fucking your fault.

It's not his fucking fault.
It's your fault. Look at it now.

Look, look." Anyway, it was
fucking really bad,

really bad in the changing room.
I didn't even know that had gone on.

I knew that Ray Hatton
wanted to get rid of me.

He thought that anybody
could train Ricky by then.

Billy was like a dad to Rick.

They had a really
unbelievably special bond.

They'd shared something
and they got each other

on just a different level.

But Ray definitely didn't think
that Billy was the right person

for the job anymore.

Everyone did want him out,

and he had to have needles
in his elbows

and needles in his hands
to get through training sessions.

Ray turned round and said,
"If your trainer is slowing down,

it will inevitably slow you down."

So Ray said to Richard,
"What do you want to do?"

He said, "I've already done it."

He come in the office and sat down,
but I knew that was it.

I knew that was it.

I said, "We've had such great times
together.

I love you. You're me mate."

He didn't have to say it.
I mean, we spent our lives,

the last don't know
how many years of our lives

looking into each others' eyes
every day.

I fucking loved him.
You know what I mean?

But what I did say, I just went,
"There's no-one.

You've got no one to look after you
now."

I was devastated. I was devastated
when I got beat by Floyd Mayweather.

I fell out with Billy Graham,
who was me trainer and friend.

So I was down after that.

Y'know, even my friends, they knew
I was in a bad way.

But the thing is,
you can't, for a man or even a lady,

but certainly for a man,
you can't go to your mates and go,

"Fuckin' hell, I'm crying every day.
Fuckin' please help me?"

It's just not what you do.

Woke up every morning for weeks
after thinking, "Got beat, got beat,

got beat." No more Billy.

The more and more I thought
about it, the worse I felt.

I was trying to deal with it
on me own.

Jennifer at the time,
she'd go shopping, or go out,

or something like that, and I'd be
sat in the house depressed,

crying and everything like that.
Then she'd come back and I'd go,

"Hey, are you OK? Are you alright?
Have you had a good day? Yeah."

And that's what you do.
You put a brave face on.

And if I felt down,
I'd just go the pub.

You know what I mean? And that was
my sanctuary.

There was a lot of drinking
going on.

I think in the moment it masked,
you know, like,

probably the feelings
that he was having.

But I don't think I had any clue

how things would spiral from there.

(MAN) What did it feel like
the first time you did drugs?

Erm... first time I took drugs,

it just seemed like...
a replacement.

I don't... I don't know.

It's just...
if you're in a bad place,

it just gives you a false reading.

It makes you feel you're...
"Ooh, I'm in a good place,"

when the truth be known,
you're not in a good place.

That's where I was,
I was looking for something.

But I kept a lot of it hidden.

I shielded it from the people
that loved me,

cos I didn't want to admit it

and
I didn't want to upset me family.

You know,
after the Mayweather defeat,

that had to put a lot of questions
in his mind.

So there was a process
of getting some wins back.

He went to Man City's stadium...

..and Ray said, "We sold
fifty-something thousand tickets

in like 24 hrs or 48 hours.

And it's like,

"Wow, that just shows
that he was still big

with his army of fans."

I think he was trying
to throw himself into something,

because inside he was hurting
so much.

He was really hurt
and he was struggling.

After that, we discussed,
Ray and I,

"What do you think should be next?"
I think I said, "Ray,

you know, if Ricky
could beat Manny Pacquiao,

in the eyes of all his fans
and in the eyes of many

it sort of erases the defeat."

Manny Pacquiao was a phenomenon
in the sport.

This is Ricky's opportunity
to come back,

to make a statement.

that's gonna generate revenue

Everybody was up for the fight.

We thought Richard again
had the tools to do it.

to be part of

Me head wasn't quite right.

But I think I was thinking
to meself,

"There's another big payday,
another chance to fight
one of the pound for pound best."

It's exciting times for me,
different things to work on.

Sadly, I parted company
with Billy Graham,

so I've got a new coach

in the next week or so.

It's after Billy,
Floyd Mayweather Sr. comes in.

Get up in the morning, eat cake,

drink Kool-Aid, candy bars, cookies.

That's what I get.

And that's a bizarre one, obviously.

Although Floyd Mayweather Sr.'s
a good coach,

but of course he's the dad
of the man who's just
handed Ricky his first beating.

I wasn't handling things
and I thought Floyd Mayweather Sr.

produced the greatest fighter
that's ever lived, arguably.

You know what I mean?
So something new

to get your juices flowing again,
that maybe could work.

But Floyd,
as much as he was a good coach,

he was very, very old-school.

But he got that medicine ball
and was just pounding.

Now what do I do?
Nobody's stepping in.

I just wanted to put a pause
to this for a moment to say,

"Hey, come here, it can't be
like this. It can't be this rough.
You gotta save it for the fight."

I think he actually drove me
into the ground.

I remember being in one
particular sparring session...

..and as I come in
with a right hand, he hooked me

and I went down.

I got out the ring from me sparring
and I put the towel over me head

and I just started crying.
And me dad come up at the time

and he went, "You alright, son,
you alright, son?" I went, "Dad,
just leave me. Just leave me.

Leave me, Dad. Leave me, Dad."

I was crumbling as a person.

A lot of people don't know
I wanted him to pull out the fight.

That fight is the only fight
I thought,

"We need a miracle here".

His mental side,
it just wasn't there.

(COMMENTATOR) Is this going to be
a stellar night for Ricky Hatton?

It was like a nightmare.

I felt like he was fighting
against the best in the world

already debilitated.

And I was like, well,
he can't fight, then,
we've got to pull him out.

Felt like I was getting ready
to go to me own funeral.

I'm trying to tell meself,

"You just get one of them
Ricky Hatton body shots

right on the ribs, it'll be
all over. It'll be all over."

straight after the fight.

I knew his head wasn't right.

I felt guilty.

Got all emotional again with my wife

in the hotel room. And I said,

"I should have protected him more,"
but what could I do?

He didn't want to pull out,
it's the nature of him.

Erm... I'm sorry about this.

Cos it's really
one of the first times

I've spoke about it
in all these years.

The problem with boxing is that
when there's a hell of
a lot of money involved,

it can obscure people's view
on things.

You know, a lot of people,
they don't view an athlete
like Ricky as a person.

They view him as an asset.
And everyone's going,

"This kid's gonna be
a world champion

and he's gonna earn
fucking millions." And that means,

"On the back of him, so am I."

Never mind about
the collateral damage along the way.

Before you know it,
you're retiring from boxing

and you feel broken.

When I retired after Paquiao,

I found it a struggle.

I started training fighters,
but it was still

a little bit of a smokescreen.

Once you've had that feeling,

when millions of people
all around the world,

see your hand get raised,
world champion Ricky Hatton,

there's no feeling like it.

It's very, very hard
to replace that.

Stay there, stay there!
Have it with him!

Again!

There's a common saying in boxing,
"It's the loneliest place
in the world." And it is.

Especially when you retire.

I didn't intend
to become a reclusive,

if you know what I'm saying.
But you kind of...

..shut yourself away.

Then the next thing,
the years just go by.

We'd not spoken for a few years,
but they owed me a load of money

for the Mayweather fight.

I used to text Ricky.

"Hello, Ricky, do the right thing.

Just give me the money."

You know what I mean? And that's it.

Billy turned around and said,
"I didn't get paid

what I should have done".
And when he turned around and said

I've not paid him enough,
I went, "Dad, what's gone on here?

What's gone on here?"

Well, all that happened with Billy

is Billy then thought
he'd been short-changed.

I don't know what the dispute
was supposed to be about,

I should have just got me money,
you know what I mean?

(MAN) Why didn't they pay you
for that?You'll have to ask them.

We were more than fair.

Richard made Billy Graham
a bloody millionaire.

And it annoys you when people
don't look back and think

to themselves, "Thank God. Wow!

How lucky was I that somebody
bought that little fella

into my gym all those years ago?"

What a shame
that they don't think that way.

I'd had enough

and we had to have a meeting
with lawyers.

by his former trainer Billy Graham.

The pair worked together

I've got me trainer, who I love,
me best mate,

and my father, who I love equally.

That's when, you know,
I'd taken drugs,

but then from that moment in,

I went a little bit into overdrive,
let's say that to say the least.

It's a spectacular fall from grace.

The image of Ricky Hatton

was splashed across the front of
the 'News Of The World.'

I said they must have it wrong.
it was the side of his face...

..but it was a particularly
personalised bracelet.

That was obviously Richard.

It was... devastating.

I'd go out on me own

and I'd just knock about
with randoms,

doing stuff I shouldn't have done.

Anyone could be taking a picture
of me and that, but I didn't care.

(DOOLEY) In the moment,
it was so shocking,

but at the time there was a lot
going on in his own head.

And I think with the structure
of boxing gone, it got worse.

I never thought the court case
would happen.

I never thought
it would come to that.

But he believed them instead of me.

I think it was over
about four or five days.

Every day after the court,
I just walked straight out

and just got pissed.

It was killing me bit by bit.
It was killing me.

Absolutely, absolutely killing me.

The first question to Ricky was,

"How much did you get
for the Kostya Tszyu fight?"

So Ricky says,
which I always thought,

"A million pound."

So my lawyer said, "No, you didn't."

He says, "You got one million,

two hundred thousand."

That suggested that somebody else
took 200 grand.

I looked at Ray Hatton and I seen
Ray Hatton making these gestures.

You know what I mean?

I don't mind telling you
what the fallout was,

because when you haven't done
something, you can say it.

They accused me
that I was taking out money.

They said, "Money has gone
into this account, this account,

and this account." I went
to my accountant and I said,

"Has there been money
going into other accounts?"

And he went, "Yeah."

And I went, "What? How much?"

And he told me and I went, "Oh no."

You gotta understand,
everybody talks to each other.
I asked somebody,

"How much,
they just went, "Fucking loads."

They might have said
"Fucking millions," I don't know.

Nobody ever came out right and said

that Ray Hatton had stolen money,
right?

Ray is a lot of things,
he would not steal from his son.

To try and safeguard
Richard's finances,

we set up a discretionary trust.

It no longer legally is your money,
but you and your family

and your family down
is the beneficiaries of it.

I tried to tell him
what had been done.

And then unfortunately
he turned around and said to me,

"You've been ripping me off."

When I come out that court,
me heart just flopped out me body.

I said, "You can't move money
and not tell the person in charge
what's going on.

You can't do that."

It was all a misunderstanding,
and I hadn't done the things

that people said I'd done.

(GRUNTING)

(REPORTER) Ricky Hatton has settled
a £1.4m claim for unpaid wages

from his former trainer. Hatton
reached a mutually acceptable deal
with Billy Graham.

I was vindicated in my eyes,

d'you know what I mean?

Then I felt disgusted with meself
to have felt like that.

It is a tragedy.

I think it's sad how it ended.

(GRUNTING)

I felt let down, because I'd lost
one of me best mates...

..and stuff was happening
with my money

that I didn't know about.

I said to me dad, "I think
it's time we parted company

and give ourselves
a bit of distance."

And it lasted for eight years.

(BABY TALK)

We'd already spoken
about having a baby.

We decided to try for Millie.
And then later we had Fearne.

To start with, that was great,
but quite quickly,

Rick was back
in a spiral of drinking

and he was really
in a bad depression now.

There wasn't a night
I'd go out and wouldn't have drugs.

I'd go out and I wouldn't come home.

Me family and Jennifer
were worried about me, like,

"Where is he? Where is he?"
I didn't care.

I can only apologise
for my behaviour for that period,

but as you can imagine,
I was a poorly man.

I desperately wanted him to share

in the joy of our baby,

and he couldn't.
I couldn't reach him.

He was not speaking to his family.

It was all-consuming for him,
it just became like an obsession.

It was all he could talk about
all of the time.

He may have thought I'd wronged him.
I thought he'd wronged me.

We couldn't see no way
that it was gonna be resolved.

I was like grieving for my lad,

because he was alive,

but didn't want to see us.

I used to ring people up, I said,
"Could you let him know

that his family
haven't gone anywhere."

He just used to text and say, "Mum,
don't phone, don't phone.

You're not me mum anymore."
And it was...

..it was bloody hard.

You just think, from where we were
as a loving family,

holidaying together
and doing so much together...

..how's this got to this?"

I felt as if he was walking down
a dark tunnel away from me.

And I couldn't do anything
to get him back.

I had no more boxing.

No more Billy Graham.

And no more Mum and Dad.

And I just didn't want to live.

Night after night after night,

you know, I'd sit there
with a knife,

and be thinking, "Come on, Rick,
you can do this, you can do this."
And I couldn't. I couldn't do it.

I couldn't do it.
And I hated meself. I thought,

"You can do anything.
You can beat him, beat him,

fight him, do this, do that.
But you can't
fucking kill yourself?"

He's a good person,
and a lot of hard things

has happened to him
that has left him scarred.

But I knew after years and years
and years at this point,

I knew I couldn't help him.

I was leaving him when he needed me.

But it was like a choice
between peace or chaos,

and I couldn't choose chaos anymore.

I went through a period
where I didn't care

whether I lived or died,
and I thought to meself,

"Fucking hell, Rick, this is bad,
this is bad this,

you need to
fucking sort yourself out

and get yourself together."
And I went and saw a psychiatrist.

The best thing I did was go
and speak to this fucking fella.

I tell you what, it brought me
back to fucking life.

It brought me back to life.

If there's anyone here
is suffering from it,

please go and fucking speak
to someone. Don't be proud.

It's given me a lifestyle change,

for the exhibition.
