I'm going to demonstrate for you guys a

really simple shot right now of back flash.

So we're going to backlight our couples or

our couple and we're indoors and I'm also

combining it with a bit of a shoot

through and as we've mentioned before very rarely

are our tools used in isolation from one

another so there's kind of two tools happening

in this in this shot.

So what I'm going to do is I'm

going to shoot through this chandelier here and

have that in the foreground of my image

and I'm going to set my exposure right

for these lights right so everything else falls

into darkness and I'm going to place my

couple in that darkness over there which is

actually a closet and because they're on such

a dark background hopefully that rim light that

I create from the flash behind them will

really pop.

So let's see how it works.

This is Michelle and this is Belle.

Let's see how this goes we're going to

put this flash behind you guys right about

here.

I'm going to turn my mauling light on

just so the videographers can see and also

I can see where the light falls on

them.

So I'm probably going to have you guys

stand around here-ish but I'm going to

adjust you as necessary as necessary so come

and stand here.

Okay so in order to get my frame

filled with these really sort of antique lanterns

I got to get up close to them

and I'm a little bit too short.

I don't have Lani's height so I'm going

to use this chair to stand on.

Okay and I'm going to try and frame

I'm just going to try and include their

heads in this photo so it's a nice

sort of close-in silhouette of their heads.

I'm going to try and frame them right

through the top of the light here so

you guys don't worry about posing yet because

I am going to get my ambient exposure

just how I want first.

So I've got my flash turned off off

I'm 1 200th of a second and I'm

going to go around f5 maybe even a

little darker I'm going to go about f7

actually I really like that drama it looks

like kind of like a spooky haunted Halloween

type photo.

All right so I'm going to turn my

flash on I just go together at the

hips there guys and I'm going to focus

on them try and focus on them and

my flash is just set to whatever power

I used last time.

Let's see how that is zooming in just

want to see if it's focused and what

the light looks like.

Okay so I'm totally out of focus and

the light is really blue which I'm trying

to decide if I like or not I

think I like the blue light because it's

contrasting with this really really warm light and

those are complementary colors so I think I'll

I'll try one with the really really blue

light it's I don't have a blue gel

on there it's just that in contrast to

this warm it looks very blue and then

I might stick a warming gel on there

afterwards.

The tricky part is okay look at each

other guys going to be focusing come on

a little tad wider here.

Okay okay I am changing

my focus mode I've usually got it on

continuous focus mode I'm I'm changing it to

just a single spot focus because something seems

to be throwing it off so apparently I've

gained focus there let's see just stand by

Lani just in case.

Okay now I'm tack sharp just guys move

a little bit this way towards Michelle yeah

there you go and then almost touching noses

but Michelle lean your head back a little

bit Lani I think I'm good yeah there

we go and let's see how that is

and I'm just fiddling with my compositions here

to layer these lights out front and I'm

just zooming in what do you think about

the color temperature of gel?

I think we should warm it up okay

can you go grab me a I kind

of like the cool gel but we'll try

one with warm right so just grab one

warm gel I would say most flash work

that we do we usually have some sort

of warming gel on it here there was

no gel at all but it just looked

very very blue just because of the contrast

of the warmth that we're shooting with so

usually we are using a warming gel especially

if it's on people's faces and it's for

skin tones because it just tends to match

the ambient light of what's indoors so let's

try that and I'll see if I like

that any better that's just a quarter cut

oh it is yeah so it still looks

pretty blue actually because it's only a quarter

cut CTO so do you have a full

cut?

Literally he'll spend like 15 minutes looking for

something like his passport and I'll just be

open the draw and like it's right on

top so I'm gonna turn my flash up

a little bit because I've got two gels

on there now so that's gonna cut a

little bit of its power okay can you

can you just let me focus again give

your camera uh your iPhone light okay I

think I got it okay I'm looking at

each other and a little bit more towards

Michelle okay let me just see zoom in

make sure I'm sharp on them that's way

better that's I actually kind of like the

blue but whatever I've got both options less

static let's do um let's do Michelle you

lean up against the doorway a bit yeah

a little bit like that and then Phil

you're just sort of leaning in yeah but

hold hands make it real guys okay

stay hold hold hold and actually so Michelle

so a little bit more I need to

I need to focus one more time right

by their chins right by their noses okay

uh I think I got it okay a

little closer a little well just so there's

like a millimeter of atoms separating your noses

okay good I think we got enough to

work with so that was uh to demonstrate

using a back flash indoors and it was

also demonstrating a shoot through as well
