All language subtitles for 5.06 - Another Backlight Demo

All right, so I'm gonna demonstrate here how

I'm gonna use this light, this really hard

light that's blinding me here, how to use

that light to backlight our couple while we're

indoors, right?

So we're just gonna give it a shot

and see how it goes.

So I've placed my couple, Sachi and Florian,

in a position so that the light that's

coming in the window is gonna backlight them.

That's what I'm going for here.

So Florian, you're gonna come over to this

side.

Sachi, you're gonna come here.

We've got beautiful backlight.

And I'm doing two things here.

So Florian, who's like, I can see this

beautiful halo of light all around him.

It's rim lighting the entire profile of his

face.

And it's very, very noticeable because he's on

a shaded background.

So Florian's backlit on the dark background of

the wall.

So that's why he pops so much.

Sachi is gonna be more of a silhouette

than backlit because Sachi is framed by the

highlight of the window in the background.

So we're gonna have sort of a silhouette

and backlight in the same frame.

I'm gonna set my exposure for the highlights

basically right based on Florian's little tuft of

hair here.

Okay, and then I'm gonna pose you guys

in a second once I set that exposure.

Okay, so Sachi, I want you to look

up towards Florian.

That's right, and go a little closer together

for me.

Yeah, that's perfect.

And look up towards Florian.

That's great.

And you guys can hold hands.

There we go.

And then Sachi, can you go up on

your tiptoes a little bit?

You don't have to squat, Florian, don't worry.

Just nice and close in at the hips

there.

Oh yeah, this is dreamy, dreamy backlight.

Great.

I'm just gonna move this chair because this

chair is silhouetted on the window and it's

in my frame.

And I'm gonna move this one too just

in case.

Yeah, that's a much cleaner backdrop there.

Okay, perfect.

Awesome, and actually, Florian, I'll get you just

to crouch a tiny bit.

There we go, and almost touching noses, guys.

There we go, a little closer.

Perfect.

Beautiful.

That looked awesome, guys.

Okay, so a little debrief of that image.

I chose the 50 millimeter lens because I

wanted to really fill the frame with their

faces and I also knew it was a

portrait, so I wanted to choose a flattering

lens.

And the 50 and the 85 are generally

more flattering than the 35.

I set my exposure, as I said, right

for this little tuft of hair, right on

the top of Florian's head there.

That's what I set my exposure for.

I started off wide open at 1.4,

but because I've got two faces in the

frame, I wanted to go a little bit

of a higher f-stop so that they

were both sharp and in focus.

And like I said, I had Florian on

the dark background, the shaded wall, and then

I had Sachi on the bright background.

So Sachi, you'll notice, is a little bit

more silhouetted and Florian is a little bit

more backlit.

And that's simply because, they're both backlit with

the same light, of course, but it's just

a different background.

One's a shaded background, one's a bright background,

so they give you different effects.

So that is backlight with natural light indoors.
