it's not a secret.

We're going to go to Alaska.

Yeah, I'm a little
bit nervous.

What kid wouldn't
love this, right?

I got something for you.

Ever since I left Alaska,
I've almost felt lost.

I find myself hearing
the call of Alaska.

We could actually use
their help here as opposed to them being in Alaska.

What is our next step, though?

Making it safe
to be up there.

I got open flame
down here, guys.

The main thing
we're trying to stop is these fires starting back up

- and being out of control.
- My feet are burning.

Mom's and Dad's house
could easily catch fire.

We need some water.

We really could
use some water.

It's hard
to imagine from right here sitting in the sunshine

and up there is still
smoldering like some volcano with ash everywhere.

Yeah, but the hard part is
that we can't stay up there.

- We can visit, we can't stay.
- Tell me about it.

My conex
isn't even touched, I couldn't stay there

breathing in the nice,
fresh smoke and ash.

We've pretty much been stuck
in town because of the fire.

The fire swept
through our mountain.

It's been a little while now,
and most of the fire has burned out up there,

but it's still smoldering,
there's way too much ash and smoke in the air,

still, for us to actually
to move up there.

I'm already going
a little bit stir-crazy, to be honest.

It could smolder up
there until winter.

Yeah, it's crazy.
Really is.

It looks
like another planet.

Might as well be.

Just one month ago,
the Browns were hard at work,

fulfilling father Billy's
vision of faith, freedom and family

on North Star Ranch.

I'm going to start thinking
like we used to think. Let's do something crazy together.

We definitely had
a lot of plans before the fire,

you know, zip lines,
gold, houses,

trying to achieve
the dream of living the way we wanna live

and living that way together.

Y'all guys are having fun?

- We're having fun!
- Yeah!

But now, displaced
from their mountain home by wildfire,

the dream is in peril.

With their animals
temporarily sheltered,

the Wolfpack is eager
to reclaim their land before the winter snow.

We're hoping to get moved back
up to the mountain as quickly as we possibly can.

The game plan right now
is to get it cleaned up,

clear off specific areas
before winter.

Get the stuff re-established
so that we can get the animals back up there.

In my opinion, though,
the fastest we can get up there, the better.

First thing we need to do
is assess what are the most dangerous areas

and get it where it's safe
to be up there.

Although firefighters were able to save

the family's main house,
the battle is far from over.

One-thousand-degree fires
burn underground

and smolder
through root systems.

The flames can burn for weeks,

relentlessly searching
for new brush...

threatening to ignite
the untouched forest

still surrounding
the Browns' most vital asset.

Firefighters
had to dig fire lines to try to keep the fire away

from the main house,
but, you know,

there's still spot fires
on the mountain. And that's really dangerous.

To save their ranch

the Browns must prevent
their mountain

from once again
going up in smoke.

Let's do keep over there,
throw away over there.

So, you're gonna rebuild
in this spot?

I definitely can't, like, do the tree house again

because there aren't
many trees left on my property.

- Right.
- Right now, it's just one day at a time.

Walked up to Bird's place,
at first it was just like, "All right,

where do you start?" You know?
'Cause there's a lot to do.

There was a really beautiful
little tree house here, you know, it was.

And she had a bunch
of things in here that meant a lot to her.

And it's just all gone.

Oh, no! Your boomstick.

Oh, man!

I didn't get half
of the things that I wish I got from the mountain.

With everything
that the fire has taken, there...

There's a piece of me
that feels like it's missing.

- You can see the burned root.
- Jeez.

- This isn't good, you know?
- Careful, Gabe, careful.

What happens
if you come across this and you don't know it's there?

There is so much ash,
it is actually dangerous.

So many trees
that can potentially be falling

and it is definitely
something that it takes time for the earth to heal from.

There's just so much to do.

One. Two. Three.

But I feel
it's like when you get heartbroken as a kid.

You just wanna curl up
where you feel safe.

And you wanna go home
and I feel like that's kinda how I feel right now.

Well, let's not let
the fire win. This is our mountain.

Oh, yeah.
That one's already gone.

Stop this one
from burning anymore.

Down by the main house,

Bear secures the outer edges
of the fire line using his own extreme techniques.

Timber! Yeah!

It is extremely important
to take down any dead trees you have.

'Cause they're hazards.
They can fall at any moment.

Their roots have been
burned out on a lot of them, they're not stable.

You get a gust of wind
coming by, it's all it takes to knock these trees down.

So we got mega-burned forest
over here!

It starts getting green
again down this way

when we're getting
towards the house site. This is crazy.

'Cause this fire came
out of nowhere and it just really gives you

kinda a different
perspective on everything.

Just a day or two
after the fire, Raiven actually reached out to me.

Said that she was
really worried about me, that she heard about the fire

and I never really thought
that I'd see her again.

Changes your mindset a little,
it makes you think of what actually is important.

My kid River was born.

To have a son of my own
and having never met him

has really
been weighing down on me these past few months.

With Raiven and I's breakup,
we had some problems, like,

you know, meeting before,
but I... It's been painful.

It's been a heartache
for sure.

I have seen
pictures of River.

He's a cute little nugget.
Man, he is adorable.

He has these big eyes,

wide little grin
and he looks just like Bear.

It looks like if you
copy and pasted Bear, like, 30 years younger.

Raiven and I,
we were talking,

and I got some really,
really good news.

Raiven is going to bring River
up for me to meet him.

There we go! Timber!

It sounds like that
she's going to be bringing him up this week.

And that is something
that is amazing,

it's not something that I
thought would be happening right now.

Meeting my son
for the first time, I...

Yeah, I'm a little
bit nervous.

Argh, burns in the eye. Phew!

What all metal
are we able to sell?

We'll take everything.

It doesn't matter
if it's heat-damaged, this is gonna be smelted down.

Yeah. Keep an eye
out for animal bones.

So, that I can make
a memorial.

Today, the Rains and I
are cleaning up the barn.

Let's do this thing.

There's not much
that can be done with the scrap.

Pretty much, all we can do
is take it and see if we can sell it.

It's very disheartening
seeing all the work

that has gone
into the mountain,

and the barn and
then see it all in ash.

It's like carving
a masterpiece.

And then just throwing it
in the fireplace.

Let's try to get this
as tall as possible,

but remember there
are active fires in the area, still.

Yeah. I remember
when we were building the barn,

we were passing
the tin up and the hayloft was about to here.

- Right.
- This is kinda sad.

- Yeah.
- Taking it apart after we spent so long

putting it together.

The barn not only
holds a special place to everybody else,

it does hold a little bit
of my heart with it always.

A lot of firsts,
when we were building the barn,

I conquered
my fear of heights.

- The wind is good.
- I wish it would stop!

- Oh, my God!

I learned how
to drive heavy machinery.

- Punch it in. Whoa, whoa.
- Oh, my God!

Got my first horse
in there.

The girls love it.

Never thought
we'd give them this.

Even thinking of it now,
It's harder than I would like to admit.

Yeah, that's as good
as we're gonna get.

But just trying
not to focus on it,

'cause I don't wanna cry,
I wanna get the job done.

I was digging around and
I noticed a lot more animal remains than we thought.

- Looks like a throat.
- Actually, that's a rat tail.

Oh! You're right!

- Yeah.
- Did Bird leave her shoes in here?

Oh, my feet are burning.

It's melting my shoe
and getting to my feet.

Don't breathe too much
of that smoke, guys.

Later that day,
a spot fire erupts

just one mile away
from the Browns' main house site.

This catches back,
that's gonna get us hot.

With the lack
of water on the mountain,

the Browns struggle to keep
the flames from spreading.

I was walking up
the route and all of a sudden

I saw a large thing of smoke
just rolling around, kinda like a tornado.

I just ran back and got
Bird and Rain to help out

and we managed to get
some shovels and got on the fire.

Let's say
the ground's a bit warm. - Yeah, very warm.

Does anybody have
like a knife or a machete?

'Cause this stuff is starting
to spark back up.

This bonfire,
it just won't die,

it keeps getting bigger
every time we see it.

It's really hard
to actually kill the fire

even when you put
enough dirt on it or water

and you think it's out
and it sparks right back up.

This fire
has a mind of its own.

We need
a machete or something. - I know.

We need a chainsaw.

All of our shovels
are burned, but a couple of them,

and all of our
big heavy equipment is gone.

The last thing we have
is this tractor.

The main thing
we're trying to stop

is this fire starting back up
and getting out of control.

If it does, then the things
that are green right now

will be ash
like everything else.

How much more do we need?

That'll probably do it.

I don't see it smoking.

This side seems
to be pretty calm.

I think we got
this one, guys. - Yeah.

We'll just
keep checking it.

This could have been a raging
fire if it went unchecked for just a few more minutes,

this would have all gone up.

Getting this fire
out was totally essential.

We really don't wanna lose
something that's already survived the fire.

It just goes to show
that the Wolfpack

and teamwork
makes a big difference.

You know, guys,
I'm worried this is gonna be a constant fight

to keep these fires out

'cause I've heard
it can be smoldering clear into November.

- Yeah.
- That's crazy!

But the fight is not over.
We're just gonna have to keep our eyes out, stay vigilant

'cause this is
gonna be a fight

that we're gonna be fighting
for some time to come.

As the Browns begin
to rebuild North Star Ranch,

smoldering fires
threaten their homestead,

putting the family's
main house in the balance.

You can see
the burned root. - Sheesh.

Right now, the mountain's
most dangerous areas

are the spots
that are most at risk

or the spots that
haven't burned yet

because they
still have green stuff, they still have dry stuff.

We'll just keep burying
these things until they finally go out.

We have come too far
and done too much to lose the mountain now.

But with the small fires currently under control...

I figure, like, let's make
do with what we have, we got a lot of charcoal.

...Bird and Rain
start the morning with some bush relaxation.

God provided.

Growing up
the way that we did, you're taught to use

what you have
when you have it. No matter what that is

or how it's given to you,
and so, when the good Lord gives you a wildfire,

you have to use the charcoal.

I've been wanting to make
my own eyeliner.

It has to be
a very fine powder.

Is this, like, good
for the skin? It is, right?

'Cause, like, that'll help--
Oh, that's in the eye.

That was a little much.

So, I wanted
to make charcoal eyeliner even before the fire.

I was reading up
on some old plant books that I have.

Ooh! This is working good!

That's never gonna come out
of your clothes.

It's hard to wear
makeup in the bush,

so, you want something
that you have to use gasoline

to get it off of your face,
so it stays there all day. - Wow. Looks good.

Has a nice, like, smoky look.

- That's not bad.
- That's really good actually.

Okay. I'll make
some toothpaste.

I've messed around
with making toothpaste before.

I haven't quite had
fresh charcoal to do it with

and I do like
extra minty toothpaste.

that has happened, it feels good.

Rain's porch is burned.

the Brown brothers
continue the restoration of their mountain

working to make it
livable before winter.

in just a few days,
Bear lends a hand to brother Bam.

Bam has lost
everything he built.

All those trees burned up,
and like my conex didn't,

so I'm just seeing if
I can help Bam out with anything.

Just after the fire,

She just reached out to me, so I thought that was cool.

or do you wanna take some actual trees down?

That guy really needs
to come down.

I was about
to tackle that one. - That guy?

in the corner. - Yeah.

Its root burned
pretty bad, so, it would be unsafe to leave it.

Okay. So you want to take

I can try my X pattern on it,
see how that works.

Why don't we just go
with the traditional V they've been using

since the invention
of cutting trees down.

Very helpful to have Bear
today helping me to clean everything up.

But he's wild.
He has a little too much fun with the chainsaw.

I have a very unique way to cutting down a tree.

Most people do a nice little V

and then cut out the V
just perfect and slice it in the back.

I like to do more
of an X pattern myself,

it gives me
a little bit more fun,

and I can still drop the tree
relatively where I want it.

One thing, when Bam
and I have often had working together,

is that
I'm Mr. Extreme and he's Mr. Respect the Danger.

So, when we get together,
sometimes I'm a little bit too extreme for his liking.

Yeah, that's a good cut,
if I do say so myself. I think it's beautiful.

I think it still can be
useable for something.

I think you can put
the burned aside to your house maybe.

We've lost a lot
in the fire, a lot of lumber,

and so, Rain and I
are just going around

and we're just seeing
what all we didn't lose.

Even if it's
a little bit burned,

chop that part off
and use a smaller piece

'cause with so much
that we have to rebuild, every board is important.

that must've been taking
refuge here from the fire.

I thought
I heard a motor.

Are any of us up here

- Yeah. That's a vehicle.

When we see a car,
like, our first thing,

"Oh, it's probably
one of the guys, it's, like, Noah."

But it's not a car
that we have.

That's not one of us
going towards the house.

When we see
an unidentified vehicle on our mountain,

our mind immediately
goes to looters because of our friend Pat.

He warned us that people might
try and come up and loot on our property after the fire.

Are they are actually
going to the house?

Yeah,
they're at the house.

A lot of the burned areas have had looters lately.

The looters just take
advantage of what the people haven't lost.

Wait, I thought

Bird and Rain Brown
have spotted a suspicious vehicle

trespassing near the site
of their main house.

It's not
a car that we have.

It isn't any of us

and my first thought
is, "Why would someone be up here?"

And I keep going back
to what Pat said about looters.

And I'm like,
"Is this a looter?"

You still gotta
protect what you own. - Oh, yeah.

'Cause somebody's
gonna take it if you don't.

I mean, they're definitely
tire tracks.

- It seems pretty clear.
- They would've seen us. They have to have seen us.

So, as soon as they saw us,
they decided to leave.

We've lost a lot,

but a lot of the things
that we didn't lose

are our construction equipment

because they were
at the house site.

We don't see anybody around,
but they were there.

I don't feel like

With everything that the fire
has taken from us,

to now for there to possibly
be looters trying to take what has been left...

I feel like we should check
everything else to make sure nothing else was messed with.

the present to start gathering for firewood

and there's a lot of it
on the land now. All these blackened trees,

need to get cut down
and turned into something, so, firewood's the best bet.

She's starting
to stand up on her own.

- It's kinda hard to believe.

Gabe and I have always been
best buddies. Ever since we were both really small,

we were, like, partners.

such a big heart,
he always cares so much, he'll put his all into it.

And he's got a kid of his own,

so, he's a perfect guy
to ask for a little bit of baby advice.

Sounds like I might get
to meet River soon. Actually get to hold him.

The quickest
that I can hold River, would be the best for me.

You know,
I definitely want Bear to be there for his son

and for his son to have
a dad in his life.

It's an important bond,
you know, I couldn't imagine living without my kid.

And so, I know
it hurts for Bear,

but for Bear to be talking
about River and to see that look in his eye,

was nothing more important
in this planet.

I've always wanted to,
you know, pass on my extremeness and everything.

Well, those
are the things, you know,

just pass those down
to River as best as you can.

Just make every moment count,
you know?

Yeah, that's true.

Being a dad, to be honest,
it means a lot to me,

possibly more
than it means a son,

because it's something
I never thought I would have the opportunity to be.

To actually have a little guy
who's gonna look up to me

and be like, "That's my dad."
It's amazing and it means the world to me.

It's funny that something
so bad, something as terrible

as this fire could still have,
you know, a silver lining.

- Lord works in mysterious ways.

Being in Washington,
there is a piece of me that doesn't feel whole.

I find myself hearing
the call of Alaska and that's always there.

And I suppress it
and I try to.

I had with me

and now the call to Alaska
just is ten times worse

now that I don't have
a piece of Alaska with me.

For me, I feel like,
if something is calling to you, just go.

And I feel like
Alaska's calling

and maybe this is the time
to just go back for a little while.

Could we do that?

I know the mountain,
it needs a lot to rebuild, and I want to.

I wanna build another barn,
build another house.

But going back to Alaska
might, I don't know,

maybe it'll help me
figure out who I wanna be.

Honestly, I'll never feel
the way that I do

when I'm in Alaska
in Washington.

And there's a piece of me
that will not be whole

and will not be me
unless I'm in Alaska.

If I go back to Alaska,
maybe it will just open a door.

Maybe I'll just...

The thought of
going back to Alaska,

like, I don't know,
it makes me wanna smile.

You know? It makes me happy.
I think it would be good for you too, to be honest.

I don't think I could put it
into words how much Alaska means to Bird,

but we haven't really
sat down and, you know,

said it's something
that we for sure want to do.

I'm a little bit nervous.

I mean, we do have
a lot of work to do rebuilding the ranch.

it's the perfect time to go.

Heavy smoke
erupts from a new spot fire.

We have to cut it off,
so it doesn't spark up again.

And now, the flames
snake down-mountain

just 500 feet
from the main house.

There's smoke over here. - I know,

I'll hit the fire!

There's just so much heat.

So much wind and all these
little pockets of smoke

that build up to fire
can totally spark up and ignite the forest

back on fire again
and that is not something we wanna happen.

We do not wanna lose
what was already saved from the fire.

Get this log out of
the way. Watch out so we don't start another one.

- Got it. Got it.
- We don't wanna spread it.

We need some water!
We really could use some water!

I'm not even
sure if the windmill

is still working
at this point.

Quite frankly, I don't think
it'll be able to supply enough water

at this stage,
to be able to help.

A spot fire
is within yards of the Browns' main house.

brothers Bam, Bear and Noah

frantically work to prevent
the flames from igniting unburned timber.

Every moment we can shave off
the clock is a moment that we put this out sooner.

Right now it doesn't matter
where we get the water.

Literally, water
from anywhere will work.

Right now, that fence
is just in the way.

All I can do is go around,
try and make sure the tractor doesn't get messed up.

Or I could just go
straight through.

You know what?

We're actually lucky
that this didn't melt

or we wouldn't have
this water.

You stamp it out,
I'll dig around it.

It really does feel like
the fire just won't stop, it won't give up.

Bear and I are out
with shovels and feels a little futile, almost.

I would just fill this,
but it can't hold as much as this thing can.

I'm very glad
that Noah's tractor survived the fire.

That he still has that,
because it is a huge help.

Yeah, I think we got it.

Right now, the important thing
isn't rebuilding,

it's making sure
that there's stuff to rebuild on.

So, we just have to focus
on making sure

that all the fires
are out and stay out.

Just keep an eye
on them until this is over.

It's been
a while since I've done the peacock call.

Let me see if I remember.

I think that one has
something to do with mating.

When we were all evacuating
the peacocks were released,

the white peacocks
were super special, especially to Da.

You know, that was
one of the main things that really got to him

or even when we saw the barn,
is the peacocks.

And so if I was able
to find them

or at least one of them,
he would be thrilled.

There are definitely
different patterns to the call

that you can just do it,
like, once.

But then there's
the, like, "I'm calling for other peacocks."

I'm trying to get the one
that they will just do

when they're, like,
in the barn.

There's no no sign here.

I've thought about going
to Alaska a lot.

I hate wanting
to go right now,

'cause I know the mountain
needs a lot of work.

This looks like it could
have some maybe peacock,

maybe chicken mess on it.

And I'm concerned
about any of the animals

that are out there loose,
which makes it even harder.

Oh, wait, there are
feathers in this.

It's definitely, like,
down feathers of something,

and it's just mixed
into this spiderweb.

Definitely could be peacock.
It even has the white tips.

I almost hate myself
that I don't feel at home

where everybody else
feels at home.

It's hard to be torn
between two places,

'cause I know I need to be
in Washington, but my soul belongs in Alaska.

They're not gonna be where
it's ash-filled. They're gonna be where it's green.

It doesn't look like they
were roosting here long.

They were probably running
from the fire. When the fire hit there, they continued.

I was definitely hoping
to find more sign,

but I'm not giving up
that quick.

Even if I have to come out
another day.

Come on, peacocks.

I'm not normally
the most crafty person when actually making stuff.

Raiven and River
are due to arrive in Loomis

in just a few hours
and Bear Brown

prepares to see his son
for the very first time.

I hope I don't
hack this up too much.

It's gonna be
really awesome to get to spend some time with the little guy.

I don't wanna show up
empty-handed,

so right now I'm trying to see
if I can craft,

like, a homemade stuffie
of some kind.

Not being able to be
around River at all

when he's first born
and these, these first months of him

and being alive is...
It's been really difficult.

It's been painful, actually.

I grew up really tight
with my parents,

they were always there for me
and I haven't been able to see or hold River.

It's been a difficult road,
it really has.

A little bowtie
around his neck.

Since River is just
a little bitty baby

and he's going to chew
on everything that he can get his little hands on,

I can't sew, like, button eyes
on him or anything.

So the next best thing
is to draw some eyes.

A little eye

I've really been wishing

that there was something
that I could do to have seen River sooner.

It's been weighing down
on me a lot.

Kinda like a crusher
on the heart.

'Cause it already
makes me feel almost like I failed him

and there's nothing
I can really do about it.

It's really cool
for the first gift for me to give little River

to be something
that I made myself.

I got something for you.

Kinda nervous,
hopefully he doesn't run from me.

I could not be more excited
to finally get to hold little River.

It has been so long,
there's been lots of stuff,

there's been obstacles
in the way.

But all those obstacles
are out of the way now.

So I'm just gonna
chinchilla cool off.

- An earth chinchilla bath?
- I'm gonna go chinchilla.

Does it really feel

And, like, this is so nice.

So cool. And it blocks
you from the sun.

Now all that I have to do
is just sit in a little, like,

chinchilla ball
and then just, like...

And then if you
get dusty enough,

- you can, like, shake off.
- Oh, my goodness.

I am a little
concerned about Bird.

I think that there are
so many other things

you can put your time into
that would be better than this, but here we are.

Since
the devastating wildfire,

the Browns have worked
to ready their scorched ranch for a rebuild.

Let's do keep over there,
throw away over there.

While the homestead
slowly makes strides towards the future,

brother Bear has spent
the last two days away from the mountain,

meeting his son, River,
for the first time.

Can you say "dada"?

Dada.

It felt awesome
meeting my son for the very first time.

No feeling like it
in the world.

It was amazing, awesome,
extreme, all rolled into one.

River is the most amazing
little boy I have ever seen.

His eyes are always open
so wide, taking everything in.

I just want him to have
everything that he wants,

be a president
of the United States

or an astronaut
that goes into space.

I just want to be the best dad
that I can be to be as good as my parents were

and to just always be
there for him.

Meeting with River
has a little bit of bitter-sweetness to it

because I can't just have him
around every day,

so Raiven's got to take him
back to the other side of his family

and stuff like that.

I definitely made plans
to see my son again,

but it was awesomely
amazing to get to see, meet and hold River.

I cannot wait to when I get
to see him next.

So, with everything
that's happened,

I wanted to go
for a long time, as everyone knows.

It's not a secret.
We're going to go to Alaska.

I mean, to each their own.
Whatever Bird and the rest of them feel they need to do

as far as going up to Alaska
and try to find themselves again after the fire.

Personally, I think they
should find themselves with a shovel in their hands

and help me clean up
everything so we can get back

to building
and business as usual.

They're skipping out right
when we're trying to rebuild.

We could actually use
their help here.

We're good here,
don't worry about it.

We'll be okay.

I think it's going to be good
for all of you, to be honest.

Kind of a reboot.

Sure you

Alaska to Bird
is like snuggling up under a warm blanket

on a cold winter day
with a cup of hot chocolate.

It's so deep inside her,
what she is.

See if my rocks
from the creek are still there.

Also, we'll send
maybe a sprig of a tree, to smell it,

since I'm not there
to smell it,

and a couple of sticks
of devil's club.

All right, bring back
an eagle feather... -

...a bear claw,
a rock from the river...

Before the voyage
to Alaska begins,

the siblings
divide and conquer

to patrol the mountain
for any remaining fires.

This area
looks pretty clear, so let's get out of here.

I don't see any
like open flame or anything.

I'm definitely proud of us all
for pulling together like we have to stop the spot fires

and it just reassures me
that we are doing a good job

and that everything
is gonna be okay.

It's hard to say
how long it will take

for the land to rejuvenate
from the fire

and to actually be back
to being a working ecosystem again.

But this is more than land,
this is a dream.

So I think we're gonna do
what we always did

and always have done
and just stay the course.

No matter
how bad it gets,

no matter how much
it's burned, we just keep going.

A lot of people,
if one thing happened to them, would give up and we don't.

So we keep on moving
to the next tragedy.

It's not gonna knock us
down either.

The only direction
I know to go is onward.

It took a long time
to get one load in.

I wanna prove to myself
that I can still survive in Alaska.
