we're doing a renovation,
versus a new build,

which I'm really
excited about.

I'm headed to meet
with my realtor, Mark,

and he has told me he has some
promising properties for me.

Okay, so we've narrowed it
down to three,

I think, really good
opportunities in the area.

Okay.

This particular house
falls right in line

-with the square footage
you said you wanted.
-Okay.

-Two bed, two bath. Okay.
-Yep.

I'm definitely looking
for something

I can dramatically
change the floor plan, too.

Well, there's one house.

This is a four-bedroom.
It's very dated.

-Wow.
-It's gonna need
a little love.

[Mark] To bring...to bring
your dream about.

Okay, and the

-Yep.

I have a friend,
his name is Joe Mazza.

with these builds.

So I really, really want

maybe adding some different

So here's the main area here.

I like the fireplace.

This is beautiful, right?

I can really turn this
into a focal point, too.

[Mark] Yeah.

So this is a little
pass-through dining area.

[Mark] Okay.

[Tiffany] Random wet bar.

This entire section
I want gone.

-It has a ton
of potential, right?
-A ton.

In here is the kitchen.

[Mark] Nice!

[Tiffany laughs]

right here.

-[Tiffany] Yeah, way back.
-[Mark] This is straight '80s.

But what do you think overall?
Structure wise.

There's no big cracks,
there's no big slopes.

See, if you stand here,

you can see a teeny bit
of the fireplace.

Imagine opening up
all this right there,

and your kitchen is now in
with the dining room,

which is now in
with the living room.

[Tiffanny]
That's music to my ears.

I see a deck out here.

It's a huge yard.

[Tiffany] I want to make
this deck even bigger.

And there's a reason
why I like that idea.

These railings,
less than 36 inches,

which poses a safety hazard.

Also, you have
your baluster spacing

which is more than
four inches.

Typically, it's four inches
or less.

and we fix it all.

The deck also connects
to the primary bedroom.

Okay, so this is
the main bedroom suite.

I just want this room

to feel like
a sleep sanctuary.

If you want to go to the deck,

Let's go upstairs
and check out
the rest of space.

Up here,
there are three rooms,

another bath,
and a laundry room.

We got to get a handrail here.

Yeah. I want the stairs
to be open.

[Tiffany] And enlarging
these windows

could be transformational.

I am hot.

So up here, we can have
two bedrooms.

We'll renovate
the laundry room
and the bathroom.

And one of these rooms
can possibly be

like an office or a gym.

I am in love with this space

because there is
so much potential.

I think we found
ourselves a house.

I think we did, too.
I like it.

Our offer on the house
was accepted.

Now it's ours,
and it's time to go to work.

[Mark] Demo time, baby.

Tiffany made a phenomenal
decision on this one.

It's not in horrible shape.

But that being said,

right now, the curb appeal
is not good.

And inside, the layout
is chopped-up and awkward.

Tiffany's still working
on the design plan.

Well, we know we want
an open layout
on the first floor.

We are gonna be
taking walls down

and making this house
wide open,

making it absolutely gorgeous.

[Tiffany] Most of these
walls are gone.

Good.

We'll take the sheetrock down
on both sides.

-We'll assess what's going on.
-Okay.

-And then we go from there.
-Okay.

It's like a whole new world!

Here we go.

[Tiffany] This is gonna
be gorgeous!

[Mark] Okay.

Now look at this here.

It's double studded.

Maybe even triple studded.

This is a load-bearing wall.

-[Tiffany] Oh, yeah. Okay.
-[Mark] There you go.

Once you start hitting
the studs down,

that second floor
can drop down on us.

[Tiffany]

You know,
that's a load-bearing wall.

It is what it is. It's fine.

Now we know what we gotta do.

You know, we just can't
break it all down yet.

We gotta put
a bearing wall here,

a bearing wall on that side,

then you can take
this all down,

and they can put
the steel beam up there.

happening in front of me

Smart Home 2024
is gonna be amazing.

With the house gutted,

I'm starting to come up
with the design plan

for the HGTV Smart Home 2024.

And priority number one

is improving our curb appeal
by removing the old garage.

We're gonna to rebuild it

with a dramatic mid-century
modern roofline.

We're creating a bold,
new profile

with a black metal roof
that will be so dramatic.

Then we're adding
a bunch of geometric shapes

with two super-long windows
in the front,

and triangular windows
in the garage.

And blocks of
different color siding

will give the house
even more dimension.

With so much going on,
I'm bringing in

my friend, Lauren Makk,
to help me with this one.

And today, we're going over
the new interior design plan.

Oh, my gosh!

Ah!

Whoa, whoa, whoa.

Girl, this house is on fire.

I'm obsessed
with the architecture.

Yes, this was going
to look like

-that contemporary spin...
-[Lauren] Yeah.

...on your traditional
mid-century modern house.

[Lauren] So cool.

Wow!

[Tiffany] So this is
the great room.

[Lauren] I am obsessed.

The fireplace, the ceilings,

-the skylights.
-[Tiffany] Oh, yeah.

[Lauren] I just love it.

This room itself
is going to have

-a couple of focal points.
-Okay.

[Tiffany] The room will center
around the fireplace,

which will get
a tile accent wall

that goes all the way
to the ceiling.

A wall of glass on one side

will connect the inside to
the wrap-around deck outside.

On the opposite side will be
a wall of built in bookshelf

with a TV and a custom desk.

Huge skylights
will bring in tons of light,

and we'll keep the furniture
neutral, modern and sleek.

So this used to be
the dining room.

-[Lauren] Wow.
-[Tiffany] We are turning this
into the kitchen.

The center of the kitchen
will be a massive island.

One side will have a sink
and tons of cabinets.

The other side will have
a built-in bench,

which will go along
with a huge dining table.

We'll have more cabinets

and a long countertop
over here.

Then we'll do a backsplash

in the same material
as the countertop,

and add a dramatic hood
for the stove.

So what's the vision
for outside?

So there used to be a deck

that started right about here.

So we ripped that out,

and we're adding
a huge wrap-around deck

that spans
the entire backyard.

So there's gonna be
a lounge area there,

an outdoor kitchen,

and then a separate space
off the primary suite,

that will be extra private
and tranquil.

Okay, let me take you
into the main bedroom.

The primary bedroom
will be a serene sanctuary

with huge windows,
and a door right to the deck.

On the other side,

built-in wardrobes
and window seats

will make the room
cozy and warm.

We'll finish the room
in organic decor

and lots of textures.

Let's go see the main bath.

[both] Okay.

[Tiffany] What we're doing is
we're putting a wet room in.

-I love those.
-[Lauren] Oh, yes.

[Tiffany] And right here
is where

the water closet's gonna be.

-Ah-ha.
-So we just made
the floor plan

-make sense.
-Yes.

-Let's head upstairs.
-Awesome.

[Tiffany] A dramatic stairway
with two-story windows

will lead upstairs,

where there will be
two more bedrooms

and a media room,

with a full bath
and laundry room.

The layout will stay the same,
but we're gonna figure out

smart ways
to use the space better.

I am in love with this space

because there is
so much potential.

[Lauren] This is
a designer's dream.

[Tiffany] Yeah, I'm excited.

Now that our home
has a new profile,

it's time to start
putting it back together.

That means
a ton of new windows.

Including massive
vertical windows

for the front atrium.

And huge geometric windows
in our new garage.

Without changing
the footprint all that much,

we've radically altered

the exterior architecture
of our home.

The next step will be
adding a ton of new skylights.

The visual of this house
from the last time I was here

has completely transformed.

I mean, the garage alone.

It is not boring anymore.
It is massive.

-Scott.
-[Scott] Hey, Joe.

What's up, brother?

-This is coming along.
-Yeah.

[Joe] This really has
come along.

Now we have this
huge open-floor plan.

So we have what,
one, two, three, four--

We have six skylights
going in this room.

[Scott] These aren't
your old-school skylights.

-[Joe] Okay.
-These are actually
solar powered.

-Well, nice.
-They will automatically
vent open

in certain cases.

So if it senses
carbon dioxide,

it's gonna vent automatically.

-Just like that?
-Just like that.

And if it rains,
it will close your skylight.

That's amazing.

So you have the spray foam
on the walls,

energy efficiency is there.

And the skylights
are solar powered.

That's it. This room just
pays for itself.

Oh, yeah.

[Tiffany] Altogether,
we're putting in 12 skylights,

which is going to make it
flooded with natural light.

While I'm working
on our house in Atlanta,

I sent my buddy,
Brian Patrick Flynn,

to surprise the winner
of last year's Smart Home.

I am in
Johnson City, Tennessee,

because I'm here to surprise

So what I want to do

is a very subtle nod

-to mid-century modern.

the raised paneling...

-I think that's
too traditional.

What do you think?

You're trying to go
for a more modern look, so...

-Yeah,
-That's not for that.

[Tiffany] I'm landing
somewhere in between
these two.

You know, I love a flat panel.

I think it's always
a great way

to kind of modernize.

Do you know what other colors

you would be able
to get this in?

I actually have some
ready to go.

We can go with
a lot of different

color options here.

Painted, stained...

I am thinking that we
go with a stained option.

[Scott] White oak is a really
popular option.

And what's really
coming into play now

are these walnuts.

-I love the walnut.

It has a little bit of touch
of the black veining.

I think it's perfect.

to this modern look

by creating
a distinctive roofline.

And the roofing material
we've chosen

is gonna
bring it all together.

we're gonna add some trees,

but they're gonna be
a little shorter.

And I know we're planning
on doing a living wall

on the side of the garage,
which will look amazing.

And in addition to
the landscaping out here,

right inside those
two-story windows,

there's gonna be a garden
inside the house.

-So it's all about
the interior and the exterior.

800-square-foot.

That's an outdoor room.

we're gonna be installing.

with the light.

The reason is because
I have so much dark

happening on the exterior
of the house.

I want something that, softly,
will contrast it,

and that looks
a lot more modern.

This deck will last you
50 years.

that we're gonna use.

This is the actual sample.

It is on an 11-inch plank.

with just about anything.

And it's super durable,
scratch resistant,

water resistant.

So whoever wins

...whether they have kids,
pets or they just live hard,

this floor is going to go
right with it.

This is one of the
biggest days of this
entire project.

to get inside that house
and see the magic

about the progress
of the house.

Today Lauren and I
are looking at the
upstairs room

and trying to pick
some paint colors.

This is going to be
bedroom number two in here.

So what I wanted to do
is get your idea

around some of the color
choices that I have in here.

So this year,
with a HGTV Home
by Sherwin-Williams,

We're curating
a color collection

for the HGTV Smart Home 2024.

So in here,
I really, really want

to go with this
soft sandy color.

And I want to use
some spots

where I can do some
color blocking on the walls.

I will go really well

with the shapes
of the skylights.

[Lauren] Yes.

So I was thinking
somewhere in possibly here,

-in these tones.
-[Lauren] Ooh! I love this.

This is gorgeous.

-[Tiffany] I think
this is the palette.
-[Lauren] Love it.

Okay, so in this next room...

This is gonna be
like our media room.

Now in here

what I wanted to do
is just bathe the walls
in this color.

[Lauren] Yes, girl.

The great thing about
working with this palette

is that you create
a harmonious color palette.

Whether it be
in your furniture,

your decor or your art.

Takes the guesswork
out of it.

It does.

The exterior of our smart home
is being transformed

with a dark and moody color.

And the decks
are starting to get installed

in the front and back
of the house.

[motor whirring]

Inside, the bathrooms
are starting to take shape,

and our wide plank,
wide oak flooring is going in,

making our whole house
feel light and bright.

We're five months
into this renovation,

and inside we'll bring in
the midcentury modern,

with sleek kitchen
and pantry cabinets.

Above the fireplace
oversized tile are also adding

to the midcentury vibe.

And some of our bold
color choices are going in.

We're even doing
a custom mural

on the ceiling
of one of the guest rooms.

But I really want
this house to have

some real Atlanta flavor.

So for our atrium light,
we're going super local.

Lauren and I are going
to Decatur Glassblowing

to see if we can
come up with a custom
light fixture for the house.

Glass blowing.
Have you ever?

[Lauren]
I've done a lot of things,
but not glassblowing.

we've been putting together.

This is an absolute
incredible project.

After months
of hard work,

we're on our final punch list.

Including installing
all new state
of the art appliances

in the laundry room,
pantry and kitchen.

Tiffany was not able
to make it out of Chicago.

The weather's been
really crazy there,

but the house
is in great shape.

It is phenomenal.

The finishes are so beautiful.

The skylights
are in incredible

the view outside--

[screams in excitement]

This is incredible.

The lighting
around this room,

I'm looking for opportunities
to layer things.

It just makes it
feel more like home.

the metal roof on.

Now everything else
has been done.

I cannot wait to get
inside that house

it was sloped down
to the driveway.

[Joe] Now we blew it up,
and it's sloped
the opposite way.

The curb appeal
that you brought to this home.

this living wall right here.

the maintenance

-on this is so easy.

You can literally irrigate it

the lighting
on the outside.

I was very nervous about
playing with the geometry

and all the different
window sizes and shapes,

but I feel like
it worked out amazing.

looks this good.

There's an area

And it is a home office
with a hidden feature.

Now, One thing
that I absolutely love

about this house
was the flooring
that selected.

They're almost 11 inches.

And they have this modern
contemporary type of vibe.

And they're durable,
which is very important, too,

especially by main entrance
walking in.

Before, we only had
two skylights.

-[Tiffany] Yes.
-[Joe] Now we have six.

[Tiffany] That natural light
is just flooding in.

This is absolutely
phenomenal.

[Tiffany] This area
felt so small,

now It's wide open,
fresh, light and airy.

No matter where
you're standing,

you're a part of the action.

The old kitchen
was so dated,

and I wanted to keep it
midcentury modern.

So I went with the flat faced,
flat panel cabinetry.

It looks like we don't
have that much story

because everything
is kind of low lying.

There's nothing on the walls.

But when you open
the cabinetry

and you see how deep
these drawers are?

-[Joe] Oh, yeah.
-It's next level.

Now the appliance game
in here is sick too.

This dishwasher
has an additional third rack.

-[Joe] Ah!
-Yep.

[Joe] That makes life easy.

[Tiffany] Yes.

And then the refrigerator.

I love it.

It's a four door
refrigerator.

My problem is, is that
I have that drawer freezer.

[Joe] Me, too.

And everything is stacked
on top of another.

So if I wanted to get
to a pizza that I bought,

-a month ago, I have
to move everything out.
-[Joe] Right.

With that, that solves
all of my problems.

And it's a very,
very sleek design,

-Neat and organized.
-Neat and organized.

That is what I wanted
to go for with this house.

Smart plugs.

[Joe] I love these.

Yes, just like that monitor.

It hides away
when you don't want it.

We have a smart oven
with seven cooking modes.

-It offers true
convection cookies.
-[Joe] Okay.

It also has
an air fryer mode.

So you don't
have to have that
big bulky--

You don't have
to have that. No!

It's another way
of being smart
about how you're living.

Then you can just take it

of your vegetables garden.

was so boring before.

we took this space

and made it
into a laundry room.

Another splash of color

and another design trick
that I used.

I took the flooring
and I ran it up the wall

just to soften it up
and warm this space up
a little bit.

an extension on...
-[Joe] Okay.

-...for the laundry.
-Okay.

-[Tiffany] So in here,
it's just your normal closet.
-[Joe] All right?

[Tiffany] I have a hamper
right here.

And my absolute
most favorite thing ever.

We have this pullout
ironing board.

[Joe] How convenient is that?

I legit iron my clothes
all the time.

I forgot about
the last cool thing.

-[motor whirring]

It's a vacuum.

That sucks off the mess.

So this bathroom
I'm really excited about.

I love
the color in here.

The tile work.

which really goes
with the mid-century
modern theme of the house.

from the original bathroom.

come in and paint these.

It takes a boring room...

and it gives
so much personality.

seamless harmony

inside.

And Atlanta is known
as the city in the forest.

So this is the final

But what this is called
is color blocking.

I drenched
the pink everywhere.

But to accent
a certain feature

or a piece of architecture.

What you want to do
is split it up

and then paint it
two different colors.

And it will completely
transform the room.

It's a great way
to delineate space.

[Joe] I like that.

Now I know you're gonna
really love the garage.

One of the hubs
of the house.

It's stylish, isn't it?

[Joe] Yeah.

Smart storage continues.

We have the lift.

I tried to get the granddaddy
of all grills.

rotisserie feature.
-Yeah.

One more thing I love
about this area
of the outdoor kitchen

is the pass door.

-[Joe] Yeah.
-It makes
everything convenient.

There's more
around the corner.

This is the more
private area.

Imagine just walking out
of your sleep sanctuary

into this.

You know, it's also nice,
the privacy wall.

You've got the airflow
that can come through
with the openings.

And you even put in
the shade canopy
to keep things cool.

Everything in this house
allows you to be safe,

calm, cool, collective,
you know,
and and enjoy yourself.

[Tiffany] A smart home
isn't just about technology.

It's about
great space planning.

and it's about comfort.

We took an 80s house
with a funky,
chopped up layout.

And really transformed it
into a high tech,

gorgeous home fit for 2024.
