So, I enlisted and we're
sent over to Vietnam,

spent 4 months there in 1970
before I was [inaudible] 3 times

with Medevac out to Japan.

At the time of recuperating
in Japan,

I started wondering just what
the hell we're in Vietnam

for 'cause when you are taught
about the communist monster

that you're over
there to defeat.

When you get over there and you
like see when you go to a villa

or something, they liberate
a village, the people hide

from you and throw rocks
and everything else,

bottles and all that to you.

But when the Viet Cong
come to liberate a village,

the people go out there
yelling, celebrating,

holding pictures of Ho Chi Minh.

And, you know, seeing things
like this makes you wonder just

who this monster really is?

[Music]

In November 1971, 1,300 of
its crew signed a petition

to stop their ship
from going to Vietnam.

I mean, what the effects of an
attack carrier have on the war?

What is it that started you all
thinking, and how did you come

to understand the role that
an attack carrier plays?

>> I suppose everybody
always knows,

but they can rationalize
anything away.

That's man'-- you know,
that's the way his mind works.

and people want us to get

out Vietnam and you see,
the polls getting higher

and higher every week.

But yet we aren't out, you know,

and how can you rationalize
this?

>>Yeah, we'll be off the coast

to Vietnam during
Christmas, you know.

We'll probably send a strike
off during the Christmas day

and so many sick lifers.

They'll go down and write Merry
Christmas on a bomb, you know.

In a chapter, we'll make--
we'll try and rationalize it,

you know, and it's a big
joke but it scares you.

always thought the question.

And the service won't
let you question

because they don't
have an answer.

They only have a rule book.

>> And I feel that by my
speaking out, you know,

if I can turn just a couple
people to start thinking

about it or even think about
for a couple of seconds,

It's a beautiful
sunshiny afternoon here

on the Mekong River
Delta, where elements

of the 101st Airborne
[inaudible]

with a crack North
Vietnamese 7th regimen.

Both teams undefeated and
untied so far this season.

[cheering] Okay, and directly
down on the playing area,

[inaudible] surrounded by trees
with hills in the background.

Look up over those hills,

here come the cobra
helicopters of the 101st.

They're straightening landing
zones a 50-caliber machine

gun fire.

They go the mini guns.

And here come the
[inaudible] down into the zone.

It will be the 3rd
Brigade of 101st.

The boys come busting
out of the helicopters,

firing M16s from the hip as
they go driving on to set

up a line of scrimmage.

There's no sign of the Viet
Cong, yet no sign of Charlie.

[laughter]

Red, wait a minute.

>> There's Charlie.

Charlie there and
he's got mortars.

I count mortars 1, 2, 3, 4,

5 rounds of mortar
fire and 2 [inaudible].

Huey helicopters down

and burning the [inaudible]
and heading for home.

[cheering] The boy is
101st to dock in there.

Now Charlie, come out from
behind the mortars with AK-47.

He's heading for the outside
of the line, but the boys

of the 101st have laid up a
wall of grenades, small weapons,

and machine gun fire, but
Charlie driving on hard.

And look at those fireworks,

the best that American
technological know-how

can provide.

Flash air, framework, beehive,
there's pop the magic dragon,

36,000 rounds a minute.

The boy, they have
4 barrel shotguns.

And Charlie is slowing down.

He's bugged down.

fragmentation bombs,

buffalo down and kicking.

Picketing continues to increase

as more than 750 [inaudible]
personnel are in 32 gates

to military installations
as the first day

of the plan 2-day work
stoppage got underway.

However, the [inaudible]
have has been reported

and traffic continues to move
slowly through those gates

with heavy picket activity.

>> And we are of course
particularly happy

to be in Okinawa.

We all hope that by our presence
here, the Okinawan people

and the US Military people can
come together to see our show

with the understanding that
the American GI is not the same

as the American Government.

The American GIs don't
know why they're here,

don't want to be here, don't
want to be in Vietnam or Japan

or the Philippines or Hawaii,
anywhere in the Pacific Rim

or anywhere in the world
where they don't belong.

And that they, like
us and like you,

believe that Okinawan
Land should belong

to the Okinawan people.

I can't blame them in a way.

When you see a base like
this with all this land,

they could be using
it for something else.

our own republic

and we've had them for 25 years.

black soldier who refused his
orders to kill in Vietnam.

He was placed in the stockade

and he gave an interview
to the press.

And among his reasons
for doing this,

he said that he thought the war

in Vietnam was an
American war of aggression.

He thought it was a
racist and genocidal war.

He said he doubted very much
if America could bring equality

and democracy to the
yellow people of Vietnam

when they've never brought
equality and democracy

to the black, brown, red,
and yellow people of America.

And he thought that
before we begin to preach

and leave our country to spread
the word, that we better clean

up our own mess at home.

And this song is called,
"Soldier We Love You."

[singing] I read
that you took a stand

and refused to kill in Vietnam.

You said no man was your enemy,

what he's fighting
for is to be free.

Ghetto streets lead nowhere,
and ghetto cries fill the air.

Uncle Sam's in Nam to loot
and rob and people starve

at home 'cause there's no jobs.

it felt towards the black

convention and what a
black man is trying to do.

Thus, they put me up for do
not recommend for promotion.

and they want you to do the job

that you're supposed to do.

They don't consider
you as a human being.

They don't want you
to be an individual.

Anytime you are an
individual, they slap you

and the progressive American

Johnny Got His Gun and
it was written in 1938,

a year and a half before
the Second World War was--

It was written about an American
GI who was sent to France

in the 1914, 1918 war to keep
the world safe for democracy

and he got hit by a high
velocity shell and they blew

up his arms and legs,
everything, his eyes.

He didn't have anything.

He was kept alive like
a fragment of meat

in the hospital in France.

And he couldn't figure out
what to do with his life,

I mean he lived but,
you know, he could tap

with his head and communicate.

But he couldn't imagine
what use his life could be

and he gradually begun to
discover that if people

around the world saw him,
saw this piece of meat

that couldn't see or hear
or speak or anything,

they would understand the
futility and the horror

and the stupidity of war.

So he sent to his commanding
authority and the government

and everyone and asked
them if they would put him

in a glass box and send him
around the world, you know,

so that everybody in
the world could see him.

And in looking at him,
they would understand

and then they would make
all people come together

and all people would be free.

And he waited for the
answer because he thought

that the government
once they heard

that idea would be
really eager and do it.

And the answer came back and
the answer of course was no,

that he had to stay
in the hospital,

that nobody could see him,
that he just had to stay there

and he couldn't understand.

And then suddenly, he did.

Suddenly, he saw.

He had a vision of himself,
as a new kind of Christ,

as a man who carries
within himself all the seeds

of a new order of things.

He was the new Messiah of the
battlefields saying to people,

"As I am, so shall you be."

And with it, he understood it.

He understood it now.

He understood everything.

He had told them his
secret and in denying him,

the authorities had
told him theirs.

He was the future.

He was a perfect
picture of a future

and the authorities were afraid

to let anyone see what
the future was like.

Already they were looking ahead,
they were figuring the future

and somewhere in that
future, they saw a war.

Now to fight that war,
they would need men.

But if men saw the future,
they wouldn't fight.

Hiroshima is being dropped

in terms of bomb
tonnage on Laos, Cambodia

and Vietnam each week, 2
and a half times Hiroshima.

That's a terrifying
thing to recognize

that there are babies being born
with flippers instead of hands,

with soft skulls, with no
tear ducts, with soft palates,

because the things that
our government is dropping

on that country.

Their crops are being destroyed,

their animals are
being destroyed,

their water supply
is being polluted.

There are areas where people
will never be able to live again

and it's our government
which is doing it,

the American government
and our names.

The soldiers know this.

The soldiers that
are loading the bombs

and the planes know it.

The soldiers that are working
on the flight lines know it.

The pilots know it.

The reconnaissance, the photo
reconnaissance experts know it.

The men who are waging the
war from Okinawa, from Japan,

from the Philippines, from
Hawaii, from the attack--

nuclear attack aircraft
carriers, they know it

and they're beginning to say no.

We will not load bombs anymore.

We will not kill
Vietnamese people anymore

and we're beginning
to ask ourselves why

and in whose interest
are we here.

represent the feelings

of hundreds of Americans
servicemen and women

on Iwakuni Base as well
as the wives and families

of servicemen at these Base.

We can no longer remain
silent about the atrocities

and injustice being perpetrated
by the United States military

on peoples of other nations.

No other petty harassment, the
servicemen and women are made

to endure day after day.

against persons because
