I had spoken with her just...

the previous Thursday, and that Monday
we were told that she was dead.

July 29th, 1988.

We believed what we were told.

That's all there was to it.

One thing I thought about
many times over the years was,

why I wasn't able to see the body.

Why was that?

They had told me that I could,

since I hadn't been allowed to see her
at the hospital.

They told me to ask the minister
the day of the funeral.

He said...

"If it were up to me, I would not have
let her be buried in hallowed ground."

What did you think when he said that?

I wondered if she
was even in that coffin.

- If she's in the coffin?
- Yes.

- You thought the coffin was empty?
- Yes.

Because I was not allowed to see her.

The color drained from their faces.

They were pale as corpses.

I realized that I caused their reaction.

It was our sister!

She said, "You're the spitting image
of our late sister."

There must have been a mix-up,
and she had lost her memory.

She thinks she is someone else.

"When were you born?"
I told her, February 9th, 1941.

And then she said,

"Oh my God!

Lita was also born on that day!"

I said, "What did you call her?"

"Her name was Astrid,
but we just called her Lita."

I was called Lita
until I was 18 or 20 years old.

I couldn't understand it.

I grew up in a beautiful place
in the north of Norway.

My parents,
or who I thought were my parents,

were considered wealthy
because of all the land they owned.

I cannot speak highly enough
of my childhood.

I've always felt different in many ways.

I felt a loss,
but didn't know what it was about.

I asked my cousin,

"Can you help me figure this out?"

two days after that, he called.

I called Olaug to tell her about it.

He said that I'd better sit down.

A pair of twins had been born
in February, 1941.

being born.

THE ENCOUNTER
THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

And we found out
that we are half-siblings.

Lita was our half-sister.

We had the same father,
but different mothers.

And that meant...

that Lita and I are twins.

Imagine, Olaug grew up on the other side
of the fjord in the north of Norway,

and then we meet in Gullspång in Sweden,
more than 1,000 miles away.

That's what I call a miracle!

The painting on that kitchen wall

was just a coincidence.

The fact that it's a still life,

which is what it's called
in the language of art,

made it a better fit for the kitchen
than for the living room.

That's why I chose to hang it there.

When May started talking about revelations
regarding that painting...

I didn't understand it. It wasn't...

I have now found both my birth certificate
and my certificate of baptism.

None of them is correct.

My birth certificate was dated 1947.

It says that my name
is Olaug Alvilde Pedersen.

And my biological mother's name
was Helga Pedersen.

and then take her own life.

I had the strangest dream last night.

I was driving somewhere,
but when I got into the car, I thought,

"How strange that I haven't seen
that moulding."

There was a brown moulding there.
It was curved.

But why hadn't I seen the curve
on that moulding after all these years?

Just as I'm about to start the car,

I turn around to look at the moulding.

Oh my God, that's no moulding.
That's a snake!

it's beginning to stir.

There was no medication of any kind

in her blood, urine...
nowhere in her body.

The medicine bottles found at the scene

may have led them to believe

that her death was due
to an intake of drugs.

She didn't take her own life!

She died of heart failure.

If they had followed up on the case,

and informed the family
of the autopsy report a few months later,

there would have been no need to wonder.

The report stated that there were
no traces of any drugs in her system.

I no longer have a sister
who took her own life.

I have a sister who is dead,

who has most certainly gone to heaven
and met the rest of the gang.

That's how I see it,
and that gives me peace.

The Bible says that God gives us life,

and only He can take it away from us.

He owns our lives, so we have no right
to take them ourselves.

That's why it was so hard to hear
that she had done something forbidden.

For 30 years we believed
you had shortened your own life.

And then Olaug comes into our lives,

and because of that...

we find out you died of natural causes.

It says that they found her
lying face down in a creek.

But they couldn't find her shoes.

Olaug called me. She can't leave
this thing about Lita behind.

We know how she died.
