Original subtitles

[male agent] Your government contact will be waiting for you at the secret facility.

Now remember, the truth gas in these boxes is incredibly powerful.

One whiff and a person will blurt out their most hidden secrets.

So drive carefully.

If this truth gas is so powerful,

shouldn't I be driving like, I don't know, an armored truck?

[male agent] That would draw too much attention.

It would be like yelling out to everyone,

"Hey, I'm carrying powerful truth gas."

- [gasps] - [tires screech]

[gasps]

Oh! That was close!

I almost stepped on that waffle.

Hey, bud, everything okay?

Huh? What? I'm great. Why?

Because you're waist deep in a garbage can and it's weird.

I've been so busy with the newspaper

that I sort of totally forgot about my project for the art show tonight.

Is that a big thing?

It is if your parents are famous artists, Fred!

Ever since I was a little kid, art was all they cared about.

Ah, mm-hmm.

Hmm, interesting color choices.

But your technique leaves something to be desired.

Oh, wow, you're related to those Tanakas.

I thought you were related to the real estate Tanakas.

They're my cousins. We don't talk.

And if my parents find out I don't want to be an artist,

they probably won't talk to me either.

Well, now I understand why you're freaking out.

I'm not freaking out!

I'm making a found art piece, but none of this trash seems very artistic.

And that's a retainer.

I've been looking for that.

Uh, maybe there's more artistic trash outside.

Some of this stuff might work.

[Kevin] The school newspaper is doing an expose on Hamster and Gretel,

and we need to go in and see what Hiromi and her journalism teacher have found out.

If they blow your cover identities, it'll be a disaster.

We've got this.

Break into the newspaper office, find the files and get out.

Okay. Our first step is to quietly vacate the van and sneak inside.

Yeah, we know.

And you're not wearing those sunglasses. It's nighttime.

I just like feeling like a secret agent.

The outfits are so cool.

Obviously, we look amazing, but we need to focus.

Again, no sunglasses.

Okay. This goes here.

This here, and it feels like it's missing an emotional component.

Oh, this here.

And voila, art.

It's a statement on how I think outside the box or something.

So, are your parents here?

Oh, you would know if they were.

Like I said.

? No introductions needed ?

? You all know who we are ?

? Juni and Haru modern art superstars ?

? Pollock is too literal ?

? Rembrandt, too abstract ?

? But we fit right in the middle ?

? For a bigger impact ?

? We wrapped a shopping mall in tinfoil ?

? A statement on consumption ?

? We dressed up as goats playing bagpipes ?

? For a senator's formal function ?

? We slept atop a stack of books ?

? On deco architecture ?

? The critics all missed the point ?

? But there was much conjecture ?

? We're not concerned with being bad or good ?

? We strive for being misunderstood ?

? Because we're artists ?

? And we're on a higher plane ?

? But if you're normal we can still be friends ?

? Just know that when we talk of the mundane ?

? It may sound like we condescend ?

? Because we're artists ?

? Because we're artists ?

? We are artists ?

I take it those are your parents.

Hiromi, we are very excited to see your art project.

You are our offspring, after all.

The vessel into which we have poured all of our hopes and dreams.

Now lead us to your masterpiece.

Hey, why don't we check out some of the other wonderful pieces here?

[softly] And hopefully ignore mine completely.

The media room is right around the corner.

[all gasp]

- Oh, no. Principal Funderberk! - Quick, in here!

Kevin, is this...

The principal's office! Oh, no! Quick, the closet!

[sighs] Finally, some time to work on my detective novel.

Chapter 21 of 53.

Hmm. It's a bit juvenile.

Hey, uh, Hiromi, can I talk to you for a second?

Little busy here, Fred. Whoa!

- What's going on? - It's your art project.

I know, I know, it's terrible.

No, it's leaking.

- Where'd you find this box? - Just down the street.

- What's coming out of it? - Some kind of weird gas.

In kindergarten, I was the one who broke my teacher's chair.

[gasps] Wait. Why did you just tell me that?

I don't know. I just felt a sudden urge to be honest.

I'm afraid of loofahs.

I haven't washed this shirt in three weeks.

- What's going on? - It must be the gas.

It's some sort of truth gas.

Your bangs are getting a little ratty. Sorry.

I can't tell the truth tonight.

My parents will be heartbroken if they find out

I don't want to be an artist anymore.

That's all they've ever wanted.

Well, okay. You better get this thing out of here.

Hold your breath until you're outside.

I'm your secret Santa. Oh!

Detective Flunderbern smiled at his own handsome reflection.

The case was difficult, but not impossible.

This is riveting.

[sighs] We need to get to the media room.

[Principal Funderberk rambling]

[gasps] Look, there's a vent here.

Who puts a vent in a closet?

Let's get out of here.

But I need to know if Flunderbern finds the stolen diamonds.

There you are, Hiromi.

We thought we'd lost you.

[gasps] Is this your art project?

- It's... amazing! - Amazing!

Wonderful work, Hiromi.

A commentary on thinking inside the box,

but feeling outside the box.

How inspired!

And the element of the gas leaking out,

a part of our inner self that is always unable to be contained.

You were born to be an artist like us.

Well, we need to put this in the center of the room

so everyone can admire it.

Where everyone can get a whiff of your genius.

We are so proud of you.

Whoops. [chuckles]

You just have to unclench your fingers there.

The artist must know when to release their creation into the world.

I only like soup served ice cold.

Why did I say that?

And I don't like any of your soups.

[exhales]

Where's the box?

My parents took it. I tried to stop them.

We'd better get back in there. Put this on.

[Hiromi] Where'd you get a gas mask?

[Fred] The school's doomsday club.

[Hiromi] The school has a doomsday club?

[Fred] I'm the only member. We have to find the box.

Who knows what terrible secrets the truth gas could reveal.

Hey, Kevin, I really value our friendship.

Me too. I love you, man.

Right back at you, brother.

Uh, I just said something I would never normally say.

Sometimes I miss when you didn't have powers and I could pet you.

And you made it weird.

Come on. I think the media room is this way.

[Hiromi] Uh... I don't see it!

[Fred] There. The art teacher has it.

[Hiromi] Oh, no.

It won.

Students, parents, welcome to the Eastside High Art Show.

I am art teacher, Mrs. Addison.

Now, art must be judged so we know how to feel about it.

So without further ado, our first place winner is Hiromi Tanaka!

I don't actually think her piece is the best, though.

I just said she's the best because I want her parents to like me.

They're famous artists,

and with any luck, they're my ticket out of this dump.

- [people gasp] - [Hiromi] Uh-oh.

That's a terrible reason to award her first prize.

Yeah, I think my kid's art is the best. He should win!

- Well, I think my kid's art is the worst. - Hey!

I made my son's sculpture for him and I'm hurt it didn't win.

I was an art major!

What? This flimsy piece of junk?

It's barely standing.

My masterpiece!

Hey, you ruined my kid's terrible piece of art!

Dad! You think it's terrible?

- Yes. Yes, I do. - Aw.

My art project was better than all of yours.

Becky, it doesn't even look like what it's supposed to be.

That's what makes it art!

Ugh, this is why we don't hang out anymore, Richard.

That and your bad breath.

[muffled gasp]

[Fred] I believe in honesty,

but there's definitely such a thing as being too honest.

[Hiromi] Uh, ya think? We've got to get everyone out of here.

[overlapping arguments]

Everyone, please!

We need to evacuate the building.

[screaming]

- [rumbling] - [both gasp]

It's never good when a large building shakes.

[Hiromi] They're all too busy fighting to listen.

What should we do?

[Fred] Get that thing out of here. I'll think of something.

Hey, cuz, what's up?

Say no more. They're on their way.

Hiromi, what on earth is going on?

And why are you wearing a gas mask?

Well, the thing is, I... [sighs]

The truth is, I forgot all about the art show until tonight.

This is just a box I found on the street,

and it's filled with this crazy truth gas.

I see. It's a commentary on-

Not everything is a commentary!

How could you forget about the art show?

You love art.

I used to love art when I was younger.

But now, I want to be a journalist.

I'm sorry. I didn't want to disappoint you.

We'll take that. Alley-oop!

[Hamster] Now it's Jupiter's problem.

- Hamster, scoreboard! - On it!

Hiromi, I wish you would have told us before

that you want to be a journalist.

Yes, we find truth through art.

You could do the same thing as a journalist.

Whatever you want to do, go after it a hundred percent.

Unless you want to be a real estate agent, that we would not support.

Wow, I feel so much freer.

And I know just the story I'm gonna work on first!

Our secret mission was all for nothing.

Well, not nothing.

It did confirm how good I look in black.

Actually, while you two were doing your superhero thing,

I made a copy of Hiromi's file on you.

And... she's got nothing.

Phew. She's been acting so differently since Ms. Knight's been around.

I was worried what she'd do if she found out about our little superhero secret.

This video is the last appearance of Super Guy.

What can it tell me?

Hiromi, I'm sorry I missed our meeting.

There was an emergency on my home planet-

Wait a second.

[gasps] Superhero Gretel was involved in Super Guy's disappearance.

I'm gonna find out the truth about them

if it's the last thing I do.

[? closing theme music playing]

? Hamster and Gretel ?

? It's Hamster, Hamster ?

? Hamster and Gretel ?
