This is our new salt life Food shack at fernandina beach.

We're right across the street From the ocean.

We're meeting Our old client jeff.

We did a tank in the shape Of a wave

For him at the salt life In st. Augustine's beach.

And this time he's brought along Marcos, his general manager.

Wayde, ki--let me show you guys around.

A lot of construction.Marcos: we are.

This will be our Dining room soon.

We got an old elevator, Kitchen over there,

Bar over here With plenty of tvs.

Jeff: And guys, this is the spot. Does it look familiar?

I'm having a flashback.

It's a blast from the past.

Such a success In st. Augustine.

Everybody came in, Loved the tank.

They would talk about it All the time.

We said, "Why do Something different?"

The difference Between this one

And the st. Augustine location

Is, you can actually see The tank from the beach.

Wow. Let's go check out the beach.

The ocean is right there.

Yeah, there it is. Cool.

Wow, look at the beach Right there.

Wow. That's awesome.

Right over there we go The big, beautiful ocean.

It's not even 100 yards away.Ah, that's awesome.

So everybody that's out there Is gonna be able to see

This aquarium and all The beautiful fish in it.

So what are we doing This time?

Well, I want to try to do Something different

Than we did last time.

I was hoping we could Incorporate the salt life logo,

And then I want the skull and The hooks floating in the water.

Maybe like, somewhere in between A couple of pieces of corral,

Or maybe on corral island Or something.

We want a ton of corral.

We want it coming up the right Side, the left side, everywhere.

Any kind of specific fish We're looking for?

Welp, you know, I'll tell you, I'd like a lot a lot of fish.

Especially looking for some Hogfish and some fairy wrasse...

Would be awesome.

Both of these fish have A peaceful temperament

And should fit into this Or any other aquarium.

They both need a tank Of at least 50 gallons,

And we'll beat that By a long shot.

Wayde: The fairy wrasse can be skittish

When first introduced To an aquarium and tend to jump,

So we'll have to make sure the Aquarium is covered properly.

And the hogfish will need plenty Of places to hide

And shrimp to feed on.

Brett: well, you know what? I suggest a lot --

Definitely a lot Of swim-throughs.

If you want a lot of fish, Fish love hiding places,

So the more cool Swim-throughs we have,

Which will also Make it easier for us

To put the logo and the skulls.

That sounds great, man.

This is identical size, height, Length, width.

The front on the last one Was a wave.

We're not doing a wave.No wave this time.

So actually this Is gonna be easier.

And actually pull Authentic shrimp net.

Our shrimping license is only For educational purposes,

So we are able to keep The shrimp onboard long enough

To display them To our passengers,

And then we have to Return them back to the wild.

So there will be no shrimp Eating onboard today.

Our waters are teeming With shrimp.

More now than it has been In a long time.

It's a very Sustainable resource.

If we control the amount Of shrimping that we do,

We can have sustainable Shrimping here forever.

Water quality is The big issue today.

We need to make sure our waters Are clean

So that they can live and Breathe and live normal lives.

So in other words, brett, Don't pee overboard.

Wayde: this area Around fernandina beach

Is a good environment For white and brown shrimp

Because of the shallow, Warm, nutrient-rich waters.

The shrimps spend their young Lives in the brackish inlets

Before they head out To sea as adults.

Kevin: so, we're gonna go ahead And deploy the shrimp net.

Think of it like a big funnel. -yeah.

Everything in front of the net Gets funneled into the back.

Just keep pulling. Keep pulling there we go.

Jeff: come on, wayde. You got to catch up, buddy.

Looks like maybe A couple of shrimp in there.

Come on, let's put them In the tank, guys.

Let's see. Let's see what we got.

Whoa! They do jump.

It looks like we did Pretty good.

We got a good collection Of creatures.

Christina: Some ones that we catch All the time is a lookdown fish.

They're silver. They're shiny.

Wow, lookdowns. We put them in the aquariums.

Christina: These are brown squids.

When they're near the sea floor, They'll blend in and turn brown.

They'll be transparent when They're in the sea surface

Or when they're in Any kind of sunlight,

So they blend Into their atmosphere.

It is nearly impossible to keep Squid in home aquariums.

They have a high mortality rate.

Because they tend to bash Themselves into the sides

And also jump out.

We've done many cool tanks For their cousin,

The octopus, though.

So, these are white shrimp.

So do we know how many legs A shrimp has?

-16? -they've got 10.

So they're decapods Like crabs or lobster.

They've got this fine Needle-like point

On the tip of their nose.

That's why we want to pick Them up

And hold them On this backside,

'cause if we pick them up By their tail,

They could reach around And poke us.

Kevin: we got a pretty good look At what we have here,

So let's go ahead and return Them back to the wild.

-catch and release. -catch and release.

Absolutely.

Wait, those are the same fish?

We have a repeat client with The salt life restaurant chain

That wants a second tank.

Last time, the tank was curved To look like a wave,

But they don't want That this time.

So this rectangular tank will be 14 1/2 feet long,

Three feet wide, And five feet tall.

It will be filled with 1,600 gallons of salt water

And decorated with holes And swim-throughs

Where their hundred Diverse fish can hide,

Including coral-beauty angelfish And a fairy wrasse.

In the center of the tank, We'll design a salt life

Logo that will need to be Viewable from both sides,

Because you'll be able To see this tank

From inside the restaurant And out by the beach.

And the first thing we got to do Is pick out the fish to fill it.

We are doing our second talk for A restaurant called salt life.

Now, this tank is massive.

It's 1,600 gallons.

So obviously we have A ton of room

To play with, so let's dive in.

Yeah! Let's go.

These are fantastic.

The evansi anthias.

I love the colors on them.

It's almost like the sun Setting over the ocean.

Isn't that amazing?It's unbelievable.

I think giving you A nice assortment

Of a lot of nice schooling fish, Smaller, bright colors,

And then mix in some big boys In there,

Is gonna give you A great color palette.

But these guys, they're gonna Be going back and forth

In the tank, Playing against the current.

They're gonna show off All over the tank.

Now, are these guys peaceful As well?

Oh, yeah. Fantastic for community tanks.

You want to keep them in groups.

They feel secure When they're in a group.

Will the colors stay like that?

Or are they gonna fade out And become different?

They actually get better.

The male will get far more Vibrant and more

Of the fuchsia and purple.

It'll come up even brighter.

And the colors, The pinks and yellows,

Are very much a part of florida.

Like, could you imagine Sitting on the beach

And being able to look Into the tank and seeing that?

They look floridian.

Let's see what else We can find.

Let's do it.

Here we go.

Ooh. Whoa.

Paul: These are bellus angels.

This is a pair of bellus.

Wait, those are The same fish?

Yep. No.

The male is bright yellow Like that,

Where the female is the blue.

-wow. -they all start off as female.

And then the most dominant Will start changing color

And become the male.

And where can you find These guys?

Most of indonesia.

How many can you put In a tank?

Well, you can put one male and Three to five females in there,

And that's gonna keep them happy

And keep them moving around And peacocking and showing off.

[ laughter ]

And what will they eat?

They're gonna eat just about Any of your prepared foods.

From flake to pellet food To all your frozen concoctions.

And are they gonna get Much bigger than this?

They'll get about Double that size.

Oh, nice. Yeah.

So you're looking at About a seven-inch fish.

Wow.

Let's see what else you have, If you could top this.

Look at this guy.

Oh, wow.

The square anthias.Look at that guy.

I love those.Isn't that amazing?

Wow.

The male has this Big fuchsia square

In the middle of the body.

A female is actually yellow With horizontal lines on her.

The female doesn't have The square on it?

No, no, no. They actually change up.

It's really -- it's amazing.

'cause you seem them, When they're yellow,

It's a female, And then all of a sudden

They start getting a little Deeper orange, a deeper orange,

And then it starts changing To that real orange in the --

You see the spot Just kinda grows out.

And over about a month And a half, it goes from

Just barely noticeable To a full-on square in the body.

Now, the marking is gonna stay?Yes.

Once they change to a male, Then it's a male.

There's a ton Of different anthias,

So they come in all kinds of Different colors and patterns.

Where can you find these guys?

These guys you find all over In jakarta, indonesia, bali.

I think it's a great addition For salt life.

What else do you have for us?

This is called A leopard wrasse.

They get about, oh, five, Six inches, right?

That's a decent size.Decent size.

They are one Of the more timid wrasse,

So if they get threatened,

They're gonna be one of the ones That dives under the sand.

But once they are happy In the tank and adjusted,

They're everywhere.

They go around picking off Little crustaceans

All over your rock work.

Agnes: he is look for something To munch on.

Look. You see him?

I do. Well, that's perfect.

He is going into a restaurant.[ chuckles ]

Well, I think salt life Is gonna be thrilled.

So I guess, bag them up and ship Them out to florida.

We can meet up With some of the members of our

Las vegas family about a project That's pretty special to us.

Las vegas with hit With a terrible tragedy

On october 1, 2017.

One of our clients, Jason aldean,

Was headlining An outdoor show

When 58 lives Were suddenly lost.

♪♪

Wow, dude.

There's so many memories Here from so many people.

We've been wanting To do our part to help.

It makes me feel sad.

It is sad, but... You know what?

It's a good place where people Are able to come and heal.

Man: hey. What's goin' on?

A friend of mine called us To create

A water feature For the healing garden,

A park that was put together In the aftermath of the tragedy.

So, tell us a little bit about What we got going on.

Well, this garden came about After the shooting october 1.

You know, the next morning We were trying to figure out,

You know, how you start your day With something like this.

You just can't go About business as normal.

And my business partner And I were thinking,

It's too bad We don't have a place.

You know, new york Has central park.

Other cities have places To gather.

We don't have that in las vegas.

And we thought, if we just had A garden

Or something To bring people together,

You know, take their mind off Of what happened a little bit,

Get them talking again.

So we made a call to a friend Of ours over at the city.

The city gave us A quarter of an acre,

And 4,500 people Showed up to build this.

Jessica: The entire garden was built Within three days.

And on the fourth day, it was Being dedicated and opened.

That's so great How everybody pulled together.

Jay: The tree of life is planted In a heart,

And on the heart Are all the tiles

And they're all hand-painted By people in the community.

And on top of the heart,

We took the red tile And we shattered it.

So the metaphor is that, Even though the heart is broken,

Our community is holding That heart back together.

Jay: It's become a sacred space.

We just need to make sure We honor that.

Can we go over there And look at it?

Is that possible?

Sure. Yeah.

Chad: come on. Let's go take a look.

That's so sad That someone was here.

And build something permanent.

The new wall is gonna be Five panels,

But what we need help with Is the water wall.

We want it to look Sort of ethereal

Almost like you're looking Into heaven.

We also have an issue With the wind here.

We don't want water blowing Halfway across the street.

So it needs to sheet down Something,

And I'm not sure How you guys will do that.

You'll have to work your magic.

Brett: there's definitely Some challenges

To a project like this,

Especially doing A water feature outside.

We've done, you know, Many features in the past.

We don't just do aquariums.

That's why you guys Are here.

Whatever we have to do To be involved, we're in.

The key is, It's gonna be us

Going back to the shop And do some testing...

Wayde: We're making a second aquarium For salt life restaurant.

This time, they want their logo

To be floating In the center of the tank,

So we'll etch it into A clear acrylic with our laser

And mount it Into their rock work

So it'll appear like It's floating.

What are you doing?

We've been looking all over For you.

We're at the emergency room Right now, okay?

Heather: What's wrong with him?

Another fish actually bit His tail off.

She has a kind Of an aggressive tank.

The fish were sleeping, like, Wedged in, like triggers do,

And another fish Bit the tail.

Aww.Certain tails will grow back

If it's not bit As far down as this one.

This one will not grow back.

It won't grow back? No.

If this guy stayed In that tank,

The other fish Will end up killing it.

Both: aww.

Tank-mate compatibility Is important to every aquarium.

Putting species that don't Get along

Can actually cause A lot of tank stress,

Which results in disease And other loss.

Triggers are normally suitable For a more aggressive tank,

But not in this condition.

Does he have a name?Not yet.

So you guys can actually Name him.

What about tiny tim?

I like tiny tim!Right?

You know, tiny tim made it Through, he persevered.

Right?He can persevere.

Too bad we don't have, like, A little, like,

Crutch we could put on him.[ laughs ]

Tiny tim?

I feel bad for him. Look at him.

I thought fish can't swim Like that.

Certain fish can And certain fish can't.

It's a niger trigger, okay?

He can physically Balance himself,

But he'll still have problems.

He can't protect himself As much.

He can't move as fast.

He can't go get food as fast.

And it's different-looking To other fish,

So they're gonna actually Pick on it more.

So we've got to make sure That he's in a compatible tank,

That no one is actually Gonna hurt him.

This tank here is A non-aggressive tank.

You got cute little clowns.

You got a powder-blue tang.

You got actually a blue hippo.

So the fish in here are not A threat to him,

And he's not A threat to them.

He'll slowly build up Other muscles

And he'll be able To move around.

And he'll hold his own. He'll be okay.

Could we put him in and see?

He's like, making himself Right at home.

We're used to making Our aquariums clear,

So we're teaming up With a company

Called 3form Out of salt lake city

That specializes in imprinting Patterns into acrylic.

We're looking for, you know, That piece of acrylic

It's for the las vegas Memorial healing garden.

And make sure that this piece Is absolutely perfect.

So we've got our texture Paper down.

Next step, we're gonna move The acrylic on top here,

Then we're gonna put the mold On top of that,

Then it's gonna bake And we're gonna be all good.

Brett: What are you guys gonna do?

You're gonna sandwich the two Pieces together in between?

Is that how it's gonna be?It's all done as a stack.

Just like you're making A panini or a sandwich.

You got the bread, You got the cheese.

The meat, the cheese, the bread.

Same thing with us with acrylic.

So we're taking that mold That we made for you guys,

Putting it on top.

It's all gonna get crushed Together and melted.

The acrylic is gonna become Molten and it'll be all good.

Wayde: beautiful.

Dude, I love The suction-cup machine.

All right. So, what's he doing now?

He's sucking it up.Suction cupping it up.

Yep, sucking it up.It's a suction cup.

Next, we got to grab This mold over here.

So, this is the texture We're looking for.

And the water Is gonna trickle on it.

That's gonna look great.Yeah.

Vill: next step, We're gonna bag this,

Get this inside the autoclave, Get it cooked.

Wayde: an autoclave is a chamber That will use pressure

And heat up To 249 degrees fahrenheit

To make this panel Take the shape of the mold.

This process can take An hour or two.

Wayde: we should name it, like, Wayne's wave or something.

Brett: oh, my god.

Definitely make the second one, 'cause we need two.

Brett: the final panel will be A little smaller

Than what we have in mind,

So we'll need to join To panels together

To get our large 10-foot sheet.

All fish in salt-water tanks Are living the salt life,

But salt levels in the tank

Should be tested Every few weeks.

Find out after the break.

Brett: The answer is "B," 33 ppt.

"Ppt" stands for "Parts per thousand"

Meaning there should be 33 parts salt

For every 1,000 parts water.

It needs to be tested regularly, Because as water evaporates,

Salt does not, causing salt Levels in the water to rise.

Too much or too little salt In your tank

Will cause stress to your fish, Or even death.

So test it regularly For your fish's sake.

Wayde: Working on the salt life tank

And the healing garden panel Is coming along,

But heather came up with a great Idea to make our own fish food,

So I thought a brainstorming Session was in order.

Class is in session.

We got your markers.It's about time!

You ready to brainstorm?We're gonna fishstorm.

First of all, you got to Figure out the type of food.

Agnes: okay.

Well, let's start with, what's Most popular, right, for kids?

Goldfish. Everyone has a goldfish.

You have different types Of goldfish.

You know, you got Bubble goldfish,

You got fantail goldfish.

There's so many Different types.

We can have a goldfish food That can be used

For assorted fresh-water fish.

Right.Like neons, tetras, betas.

You know, our flake would be So healthy

It can be used For all of them.

So, what's in it?You got protein in there.

You got vitamins.

You got actually some pigment In there

That actually brings out Their colors.

Like, out in the wild, They're swimming around,

They get to eat seaweed, They get all different stuff

And nutrients That's not in your tank,

So if you make this good food And you put it in there, wham-o.

So it'll be all-natural?

All-natural.

No artificial dyes. It won't harm the water.

It won't stain anything.

And also, it'll help Produce less waste.

You'll have a better, Cleaner aquarium.

People will love that.

So, let's say we have goldfish.

We're coming up with a flake.

So now that we have a flake, We could do a pellet.

Then you have two standard Things for fresh-water fish.

Okay.

So now you have fresh water, You have flake, and pellets.

The ingredients Are often similar

Between flake and pellet,

And the nutrition is the Most important for your fish.

But flakes usually float And pellets usually sink.

Okay. Now, salt water...

Would you basically, Like, market them top,

Middle, bottom?

That's how I would market it. Make it simple.

Top, middle, bottom... Feeders, you mean?

Yeah, in the container.That's a great idea.

I mean, that's how I would do it.

That is a good idea.

A properly stocked tank Will have fish

That will swim at all levels.

While all fish will swim up And down in search for food,

We want to design our food with The comfort of the fish in mind.

Here's the fish tank, right?

Let's say we got the fishy right Here swimming around, all right?

Yeah, you got it. Now you have, up top here...

Let's say here... Let's say here.

We could have pellets, right?

So we want to have Different sizes.

You want some to sink.

You want some to kinda get A little saturated

But not really sink But kinda float,

And then you want some to float.

So if we have flake, We have pellets,

Then all of a sudden, Wow, the fish are eating it.

Now they're getting their Vitamins, they're eating more.

Come on, it's the best.

You want to know why They're gonna love the food?

It was made with love. Look at how excited he is.

A little tlc. Yeah.

You know, by him not having His tail,

It makes it hard For him to swim.

He couldn't control Which direction he was going.

A cool that he learned to do Was actually work out.

He does that every morning, Okay?

Heather: that's crazy.

He gets tired, he'll dive down, He'll go hide for a moment.

He will just go back And forth all day long.

It's the funniest thing.Like a water treadmill?

He gave himself His own physical therapy.

I'm so happy that we found A forever home for him.

We're here for the unveiling Of the permanent

Las vegas community Healing garden

And a candle-light vigil.

Wayde and myself, you know, We've done a lot of projects,

But this one ranks Up there at the top.

To do something special for our Community, where we live,

Where I've spent over half My life is absolutely amazing.

It's a great feeling to be able To give these people something

That helps them heal.

The tank for salt life is done.

It was shipped across The country to florida,

And it's ready for install.

Which was supposed to happen In the daytime.

Man, our flight has been delayed For four hours,

But we're here and we got To get things movin' asap.

Yeah, so we need Your help tonight.

We got the stand in. We got the filtration in.

We have to put a strap Around it and kinda drag it out.

It is so heavy, There's no other way to do it.

We have to actually use two Pieces of equipment to lift it.

And this tank is perfect.

These guys Are miniature angels.

It's about as big as they get, Not much bigger.

There they go.These guys are algae eaters.

They're gonna help keep the tank Nice and clean.

And those guys are In the surgeon family,

And you know to be careful, they Have the scalpel in the back.

Yeah, they like to cut you.

This aquarium is An awesome habitat.

Even though they have Their ocean outside,

I think this aquarium Is gonna be

Absolutely amazing For these fish.

These guys are gonna love it.

Finally, we got this tank up And running

And ready to show it off.

So, what do you guys think?

This is amazing.

It looks absolutely Beautiful.

Speechless. It's great.

It's colorful. It's amazing.

This tank is 14 1/2 feet long,

Three feet wide, And five feet tall.

It is 1,600 gallons, 16,000 pounds.

I cannot believe what you did With the reef.

It's so amazing.

Wayde: Every coral that's on here is Actually handmade in our shop.

Brett: Your ability to stand inside The store and see the ocean?

We knew that was Extremely important.

And then, also, from standing by The ocean, to see the aquarium.

So we created this amazing Swim-through

That leaves the middle open

So you can get both effects From both sides.

I'm looking at this tank and I Thought it was gonna be missing

The wave Like we had on the other tank,

But looking right through it?

I got the natural waves Right through the tank

I can see.

You guys did a great job With the logo.

Brett: We created a piece of acrylic

And then had our laser etch The actual logo

So it actually looks like it's Floating inside of the water.

That logo is perfect.

Wayde: and it's positioned So a full moon

Will rise from the ocean Into the eyes of the skull.

Jeff: It's absolutely gorgeous.

It's exactly what I was looking for.

Brett: You have over 100 fish.

You have the cuban hog.

And those guys have a lot In common with the island here

Because they eat A lot of shrimp, okay?

Also, too, you have an asfur Angel, which is right here.

That angels comes exclusively From the red sea,

And it's one of the only angels That you can't really tell

Whether it's a male or female.

You have a bellus angel.

That's a male right there.

The female is completely Different than the male.

Overall, we wanted to make sure That you were able

To get the whole salt life Feel inside the aquarium.

Jeff: Salt life's all about the ocean,

And this is absolute perfect Location with a perfect aquarium

To see right out there To the ocean.

We experience a bit of déjà vu

While creating An underwater experience

For a second salt Life restaurant.

With a 14 1/2 foot long tank That reaches five-feet high,

The 16,000 pound tank

Is filled with 1,600 gallons Of salt water,

And 100 fish that will be Viewable inside the restaurant,

Or while enjoying the sun And surf outside.

And we helped give back To our las vegas community

With a 10-foot-tall Acrylic water wall

Representing the gates To heaven.

It's part of a five-panel Installation

That will remain permanently In the healing garden,

To always show That we are vegas strong.
