A volcano for a science fair,

And we made one together.

We told 'em we were gonna use
Most of the original hardware,

So all the little pieces --
The rivets, the steel,

Whatever we could use, redneck,
Let's try to use all that stuff.

There's no way we're
Filtrating all this together.

Well, why don't you
Just make the top freshwater?

Can't filtrate 'em.

Then what do you
Put in the rest of 'em

Filtrate it?

Goldfish only need bubblers

To cycle oxygen into the tank

Because over time,
They've adapted

To living in
Very small bodies of water.

Let's build a stage.

The filters are gonna have to go
Right below it in the front.

The platform's got to be
At least long enough

For all the drum set
And to have a drummer sit there.

Wayde: and high enough for all
The filters to be underneath.

Now we have to solve
The main problem.

Fish cannot handle the vibration
From working drums.

Obviously, we're not
Gonna let them

Play the drums
On top of the fish

Because the reverberation could
Possibly be a problem.

They got one of those
Electric drum pads

That you literally
Can sit on it, play,

And the thing makes
All kinds of noises

Like it's a real drum set.

The electronic pad

Will give the client
The drum effect,

But it won't disturb
The fish

Because no one's gonna
Be pounding

Directly on the acrylic.

Dude.

If you can dream it,
We can drum it.

We'll turn each drum in this
Eight-piece set into a tank.

The two bass drums
And the two floor toms

Will be saltwater tanks,

And the four hanging toms
Will be freshwater.

We'll use the existing hardware
From the drums

To make the aquarium
Look authentic.

Then we'll mount
Electric drum pads on each

So they'll be playable
Without harming the fish.

All filtration will be housed
Underneath the tanks

In a custom steel stage
That will give the drummer

A bird's-eye view of the crowd
During a killer solo.

While the guys in the shop
Get the drums beating,

I grab the volcano
That my son made

To inspire us for the design
Of the lahaina grill tank.

Now, what is this?

I helped him with it.
It's a volcano.

Looks like an ant hill

So, let's discuss
What we really need to do

For this thing.

What about enhancing this
With some lights?

Like some l.E.D. Strips?

Maybe some acrylic
With some lights

So it looks like
Lava's flowing.

Make a couple
Of tracks

That he can actually
Lay the lights in.

That would be great.

While you're at it --

The tank for lahaina grill

Will feature an eight-foot long
Racetrack design

And sit in the center
Of their new bar.

To make this truly hawaiian,

We'll build a volcano
To cover the overflow

And extend it
Through the top of the tank.

Then embedded l.E.D. Lights

Will simulate lava flowing down
To the water.

We can't waste any time admiring
Our plans on the volcano.

Chuy and the guys

Got the blues angel drum tank
Molded and bonded.

But to make these authentic,

We had to use the original
Hardware from the drum kit.

Let's check these out first.

Brett: oh, I see

Gonna be able

To take these pieces
And attach them?

This is a work in progress
As we're going right now.

Can these
Be glued on here,

Screw 'em in

Well, the problem is,

If you screw
Through the tank,

Then you're gonna have
Possible leaking.

What if we make an acrylic block
With two holes in it?

So what we were
Thinking is,

Is you can glue it
Right to the acrylic,

Just like that.

Yeah, but gluing to this
After it's thermoformed,

It's gonna craze, 100%.

When you bend a piece of acrylic
In the oven,

You have a flat piece,
And you bend it,

You're stretching the acrylic.

You put glue on it,
It actually wants to tighten up,

And it causes microfractures.

That's called crazing.

I'd like to make it
Look as authentic as possible.

I mean, I want this thing
To look just like

The drum set
That they sent us.

Brett: we finally decided
To drill holes part way through

The half-inch thick acrylic.

It won't be deep enough
To damage the acrylic,

But they'll be deep enough
To lock the hardware into place.

Wayde: in the meantime, the
Lahaina acrylic has been formed,

And denny has carved a base
For the volcano.

Now it's time
To dry fit both pieces.

Dude, I like this, huh?
This looks good.

All the lava and everything

And we can't put 'em in the tank

Take a couple inches

And bring it out.

Into eight separate fish tanks,

And they want it to play.

We have to have
A working drum set,

But the first thing
For us is make sure

The fish are safe and healthy.

To actually solve the problem

Of people banging on the drums
With drumsticks,

We asked yamaha
For the electronic drum pads

So we can put them on the top of
The tanks and mimic real drums.

We got to figure out
How we're gonna do this

And mount this
So the vibration's

Not going in the tank.

Most people don't know,
Fish have hearing.

They also have hair cells.

People have hair cells
In their ears, and so do fish.

In fish, the hair cells
Help them detect vibrations,

Which allows them to school
And escape predators.

I downloaded this app.

It shows
Vibration and noise.

If this is in here,
And this is the aquarium,

And we put this
On top of this aquarium,

Watch what happens.
Go ahead.

Look at it underneath.

You see that?
Oh, yeah.

You see how
It's jumping off the scale?

We need to find a material
To muffle the drum noise

Before it reaches the fish.

Put that up there.

There's still a vibration,

But not as bad
As when it was right on top.

Some rubber foam.

Put that right on there.

At about a foot per second,

And that'll continue
Down into the tank.

So these go underwater?

Okay, that's cool.

I've encased these
In a hard resin,

So they should be
Perfectly safe.

After we program it,

These things are gonna be
Color changing.

They will go orange,
Red, orange, red.

We're gonna trigger it
With sound first,

So all of a sudden,
They'll hear a rumble.

They'll be like,
"What the heck?"

They'll just
Start hearing noises.

They'll see the lights.
It'll be a great surprise.

And it cracked on the bottom.

To patch that up.

We don't want to remove the
Volcano insert from the tank.

That would risk
Damaging it even more.

So we got to get some silicone

Gravel will cover all this,

So I'm not worried
About the looks,

Making sure it's sealed.

We wanted to make them

Made out of polygen,

And then the top piece,
Which is actually made

From a different material,
Which is really light,

And it can be moved around.

We gave over 400 l.E.D.'s

That's in between the top
Of the volcano

And the piece
That's inside the aquarium.

So the l.E.D.'s that are used
Are actually waterproof,

And then
What they did is,

They put a gel coat over
The whole entire l.E.D. System

So that it protects it
From the salt and from erosion.

It's like we're bringing

Some of hawaii
Here to our restaurant.

And that was the goal.
That was key.

It makes me feel
Like I'm at home.

That was really important

Was authenticity.

Wayde: we wanted to match
The yamaha drum set.

We tried to use
As much hardware

From the original drum sets
As we could.

The drum kit had all these
Different clips on 'em,

But we actually had to
Dowel out two holes

For every single one
Of these clips,

And every piece
Was done by hand.

Stephen: it looks just like

A professional drum manufacturer
Would have made it.

It's unbelievable.

The wooden hoops?
These right here?

They set it off.

Wayde: you have freshwater
All at the top,

And you have saltwater
On the bottom.

All the filtration
Is below the aquarium.

Brett: what we wanted to do

Is we wanted to
Make it feel like a stage.

Yeah, it's spot on.

This looks like
A straight-up drum riser.

I mean, it's perfect.

It looks exactly like
What you would see up onstage.

Up top, we have, you know,
A variety of different goldfish.

We have from orandas
To lionheads to redcap goldfish.

Well, since you guys
Are a music store,

We kind of themed some
Of the stuff after you guys.

Your store is blues angel,
So we have a blue tang.

Over there,
We have a multibar angel.

And you know, the bar
For being a bar in music.

This is gonna be
The greeting point

For everybody that walks in
Our store for years to come.

This is the only one
In the world.

Well, I didn't think
You'd be able to pull that off.

Well, we can't let you down,

This week,
We delivered two tanks

That made our clients
Erupt in applause,

Just like they were
At a rock show.

For the lahaina grill,
We built a racetrack-shaped tank

For their new bar
That's 8 feet long,

Weighs 1,660 pounds,
And has a custom volcano roar

Complete with a sound system
And l.E.D. Lights

That represent hot lava.

For blues angel music,
We achieved an atm first,

Turning a drum set
Into an aquarium.

The set has eight tanks --
Four freshwater, four saltwater.

It's a total of 115 gallons,

And with a little atm ingenuity,

We made the drums
Fully playable.

Now, that's what I call
Turning it up to 11.

After we left blues angel music,

I had this screeching sound
In my ear.

Wouldn't go away.

[ music playing off-key ]

I should have known
The annoying noise

Would be coming from brett.

Wayde:
What are you guys doing?

Brett:
Getting the band back together.
