Hello, my name is Shane.
Some of you here
will be learning from me
the techniques to be a ranger
over the next six months.
Today, we go through an interview process.
We choose some,
and they will come to us on Friday,
and we do a physical test
and some medical tests
to make sure that you are in health-- good health.
And then we do 14 days of selection process,
where we will look at you to see
whether you are motivated,
whether you are physically able,
whether you are able to learn,
to remember what we teach you.
And we choose those ones that we will train for six months.
But everybody has an equal opportunity here.
Thank you.
60.
We hold hands. We push.
We keep eye contact.
He says yes and I'm saying no.
- Yes. Yes. - No. No.
- Yes. Yes. - No. No.
- Yes. - No.
- Yes. - No.
- Yes. - No.
No. No.
I want to see that.
I want to see you say no.
You may find anger coming up.
Yeah?
You may find sadness coming up.
Or fear.
It depends on you.
And how much you put into the exercise.
And what I'm looking for is to see,
are you really saying no,
really standing up for yourself.
And I won't hold back on this exercise with you.
- Yes. Yes. - No. No.
- Yes. Yes. - No. No. No.
- Yes. Yes. - No. No.
- Yes. Okay. Stop, stop. - No. No. No. No.
Close your eyes. Feel into your body.
If you feel any pain your body, put your hands on it.
- No. No. - Yes. Yes.
- No. No. - Yes. Yes.
- No. No. No. - Yes. Yes.
Okay. Stop.
Close your eyes.

- Good. - Relax.
Stand still. Relax.
Close your eyes, breathe.
- You want to fight? Yes. - Yes.
Yes.
Yes. Yes.
Are you going to lose?
No.
Solid.
And projecting your voice.
You're telling that person...
- More aggression, okay?
But that stance and voice,
the person will stop, okay?
So I say pigana, you say kuacha.
- Pigana! - Kuacha!
- Pigana! - Kuacha!
Heel, hips, circle.
- All the way. - Okay.
Yes, better.
Keep this one out. Yeah? Okay.
This again, if we hit here...
with the fingers,
that person will be on the floor.
He won't be able to breathe. Then you could kill him.
You don't need to be strong to do this.
One...
two...
three.
This is not a joke.
- Not a play. - Yes.
If you want your friend in the middle
to be able to...
evolve, and get rid of their shadow,
be real.
Yeah.

- Yeah. Yeah.
- It's okay? - Yeah.
'Kay, looking? Okay.
Thank you, Lord. Okay.
It's okay.
Today
is your opportunity...
to find inside of you
that devil that's pushed you down.
It's there. It's your shadow. Find it.
When you turn around,
there are pieces of paper, pens and crayons,
and you will draw your devil.
You draw your shadow, your cloud.
- Do you understand? - Yes.
Put your fear into the drawing.
It's not some nice little bunny rabbit.
How do you express your anger? Put it in there. Okay?
It doesn't have to be a neat drawing.
We're not looking for artists.
Does everybody have a picture in front of their slate?
We will go out and get ready for battle.
When I blow the whistle, you will come in.
Tie it well, because you will sweat.

So, what we can do is we measure the distance.
From this house, okay, to this fence line here.
- Mark it on the line.

1.2. From Kidnap House.
Not from the north line.

Put into this pe-- this cushion...
represents the person...
that you have a problem with now.
This person that's trying to take your house.
Okay.
Look at him.
This is him. Look at the cushion.
Say everything you need to say to him.
And if you need to move your emotions
and shout or beat or scream, do it as well.
Say it.
Change, take his place.
Sit here.
Ready? Get everything outside.
Your name?
It's a V.
Okay, Virginia.
And why do you want to become a ranger?
For many years,
women among the pastoral communities
were not heard and wielded no power,
largely because of male chauvinism.
But as Clement Masombo now reports,
this is slowly changing.
Take a look.
Damaris, a mother of two, recalls
how difficult life was before becoming a ranger.
As the first ever female rangers
take up the mantle,
the tide is slowly but surely changing,
and the community is equally embracing the change.
- Hip hip! - Hooray!
- Hip hip! - Hooray!
- Thank you, sir. - Thank you, sir.
