is scene one, take one of an untitled

investigative documentary about strange occurrences at the Market

Street Cinema in San Francisco.

So Big Mike, why don't you give us

a little bit introduction as to why we're

sitting here and why we decided to do

this video.

Yeah, absolutely.

Well Charles, as you know, I've been here

for just a couple weeks now and when

I first came in, I started giving people

tours of the club.

It's such a giant club, it's such an

old historical building.

It's been here for almost a hundred years

now as I'm learning as well that as

I was giving people tours on this club,

strange things happened.

Every time I would take somebody different around,

I would see something move, something had changed,

and everything seemed odd to me.

Every room you went in, the basement, the

attic, the old projector room, everywhere you went

in this building, you gained a sense of

there was something going on around you.

And in my short time since I've been

here, I started asking around and there's so

many stories.

There's stories about people living in the basements,

living up in the mezzanine areas, living in

the dark caverns, people of the darkness.

And so as I started asking around, then

I found out that you had also been

investigating as well and that there is lots

of activity here at the building.

Yeah, well what happened was, I mean it

was a coincidence really, because I guess about

a couple of weeks before you came to

the theater, I was doing a video tour

of the theater and ran into one of

the electricians and he said you got to

check out what's on your video because as

you know, I've been familiar with this building

for a while, there's lots of stories about

this place being haunted.

So I did look at the video and

there was odd stuff, odd artifacts and weird

sounds and all sorts in the back part

of the theater and it seemed like every

time that I looked at the video it

was different.

And so I started taking seriously the idea

of asking around, talking to people, seeing what

other people had heard and that kind of

thing.

So that's, you know, that's why we're here

I guess really, is because you were looking

around and I was looking around and so

we decided to have a look.

So that's what we're going to do.

We're going to talk to people, interview people

and see what we can see.

There's something happening here and we don't quite

know what it is.

Hey, hello, I'm Judy Rowe.

I was a strip dancer for many, many

years starting in 1946 and later I became

a theatrical technician and I came to work

for the Market Street Cinema Theater.

Gary slept in the back basement on the

floor on a mattress and there was a

young man by the name of Sal who

was our gopher and also a part-time

janitor who also slept in the back basement

on a mattress in another corner.

Gary was a very amiable and useful person.

Unfortunately, Gary was also a working criminal.

He was a hold-up man and a

strong-armed man when he saw opportunity and

didn't have his gun with him.

He used dope and sold dope and that

was his downfall, I fear, because one morning

Sal, who shared the back basement floor with

him, discovered Gary had died.

The word got to me where I was

working in the front basement that Gary had

died of a heart attack.

After Gary's death, Sal would not sleep in

the back basement anymore.

He wouldn't even go down there because he

said that there was a presence there, a

heavy menacing presence, an abiding doom-filled presence.

He didn't say abiding or doom-filled.

What he said was it's very bad.

I don't like it.

It's hang heavy.

It won't go away.

I don't like it.

I am afraid.

Every time I go back there, it's kind

of eerie for me.

You know, we have that sub-pub and

I had some work to do there, so

I had to go there, but I always

avoided going down the stairs because it just,

to me, was just like eerie, creepy.

I don't know what you want to call

it.

Somebody died down there.

Right, right.

Somebody died.

And to be honest with you, Charles, I

never wanted to find out because I just

never knew what happened and I just, you

know, just, I don't know.

It was strange.

I mean, it was creepy for me.

And then one day, I had to clean

the septic tank all out downstairs in the

basement.

And it was at nighttime and I went

to go check it out and see how

much stuff I had to do.

It was really weird because I seen like

a smoke screen or something like go past

me and I said, whoa, I'm not going

back down there.

I can't run up the steps, you know.

And they said, what's the matter?

I said, man, there's ghosts down there.

I'm not going down there.

In the far back, there's a super weird,

like, dingy place in the building.

Playland?

The under-playland in the far down basement

and it's got these weird, like, door booths

on them or something.

I don't really know what it is.

I don't spend a lot of time down

there.

Then there's an old sump pump, a new

sump pump, and then the under workings of

the building down there.

And so I'm not really sure what it

used to be, but it's the part.

It's not the weirdest part of the building,

but it's one of the weirdest parts of

the building.

There's a thing that leads to that that's

really bad.

But nevertheless, when they came down, apparently the

janitor had had a heart attack right next

to the stairs downstairs, right?

Well, it was apparently on his next day

offer.

He was a part-time employee and only

worked two days out of the seven days.

So he had laid down there for, you

know, additional five or six days before they

realized that someone was down here.

That wasn't the bad part.

Here's the bad part.

The bad part is the old sump is

only about five feet from where that was.

So when the pump, when the sump backed

up, the sewage, you know, went over the

gentleman.

So by the time that someone did come

down there to get it, you know, the

sewage had backed back off and dried up,

but had like sealed the guy to the

floor.

So when they, when they got him up,

you know, when they peeled, peeled him would

be the word, peeled him off the floor.

Most of him came off the floor, except

the part that was face down, face down

on the floor.

And so you could actually see the good

outline of his, most of his torso and

his face and his arms on still on

the floor after he had been pulled off

the floor.

Stuck with shit to the floor after he

died.

Wow.

at the club since 94.

And I'm 19 years old.

Tell me about any strange things you've seen

in here.

Well, occasionally you can see the curtain moving

around.

You can tell there's no breeze here.

So you could tell something's moving in.

We don't have rodents.

You ever seen a dancer on stage?

We see movements and, and, and things that,

you know, we like to call her the

forgotten girl.

And in the bathroom, you could always get

a presence of someone with you.

We think it's Gary.

Yeah.

I've heard a lot of stories from a

lot of girls.

Gary's definitely here.

So the four that are here are, one

is a dancer.

No, two are dancers.

One, it seems to me like he's a

customer because he comes dressed up in a

black suit and he walks in very, very

straight.

He just walks straight to the back.

And then, and then we have the, the

janitor.

Yeah.

But when I started working here, I've seen

the, I have no idea that there was

a fire in this place and, and, and,

and someone actually did, did pass away through

that.

The one that is down here, he's a

man and he just likes to mess with

us when we're here alone.

He likes to like step or he likes

to slam the doors.

He knows what he's doing.

So I said, okay, have fun.

So Charles, I was able to go on

the internet and find some archives of some

original photos from when market street cinema was

actually built.

And then the whole timeline.

So this was way back right after it

was first built.

1919 is actually when this photo was taken.

Of course, the building was built into 1912.

This is when United artists owned it.

They turned it into a first run movie

theater.

And then over here is when we opened

it up into a triple X concept for

market street cinema.

That's when the history started for us.

And then of course, actually on this billboard

here, there's actually in the nineties, there's lots

of entertainers there that I actually know.

And then of course, right here, market street

cinema, 2012, that's where we're at.

I'm really excited about the promotions.

There was something in that picture.

Saw something in that picture.

Well, there it is across the streets of

market street cinema.

Just had to get out of there for

a little while.

I've been interviewing everybody else.

So I decided to interview myself and take

a ride while we're doing it.

So that's what we're going to do.

This movie started out as a horror film.

That was going to be the location over

here.

And I found out the location of the

horror film was actually haunted.

And it seems like it really is the

case.

I didn't know whether I was a believer

to begin with, but I certainly am now

after some of the things that have happened.

And the documentary that we were making went

from an enhanced documentary with actors acting out

some of the stories that we were hearing

to something else where the characters and sort

of teamed up with a ghost.

It seemed like as far fetched as that

might seem.

And some of those things that we started

staging instead of being based on the script

were more like collaborations.

But we'll get into that as time goes

along.

Okay.

Well, I can verify that the market street

cinema is definitely haunted and not just by

ghosts.

It all started a couple of months ago.

I came home one night early one morning

and in my living room, I saw something

so strange.

It was these articles.

Hello?

Hello?

Anybody here?

What was this?

The objects had a strange effect on me.

There were these shoes.

And this poet.

I began to hear music.

And I couldn't help myself.

I had to go into music.

My body started moving.

All of a sudden, I just felt like

I was in another world.

I was on stage waiting for my dream

body to appear.

Help me.

Stay away.

This horrible old creature drew me in like

a magnet.

I had to have that refill of the

pouches clutched into her breast.

I must have what it contained.

How dare you steal from a gypsy?

I am the Doma.

Listen to me.

I am the mistress of the theater.

The Imperial is my home no matter what

name they give it.

I wasn't stealing.

I was drawn to you and the pouch

by your energy.

It was like a magnet.

Like the pouch was meant for me.

Then you must be the one.

Your very presence can break the spell.

My house is infected by an undead one.

Evil incarnate.

An undead shifter.

Demon.

It's time she left my house.

Go there if you dare, my child.

Keep the pouch and the crystals.

Use them for protection.

Tell no one you have seen the Doma.

What was this, I thought.

Was I hallucinating?

But there were the crystals.

I knew I had to play dumb to

find out what was happening.

I knew there was a story there and

that I was the one to tell it.

When I'm walking the floor, the only real

thing I've seen is what I think is

that dancer.

And I always see her out of my

peripheral.

And that's always like right here, usually walking

back to where we do dances.

I would say it's a big enough, it's

a big enough vision that I have to

like actually double take and walk the booths

over again.

I was sitting right there and I was

playing this game and I had looked over

to my right and I had seen a

stripper.

Some days when I'm upstairs waiting for customers

to come in, I'll turn around to make

sure a customer hasn't entered and I will

see the curtain open and a woman walking

back there that I've never seen a day

in my life.

Oh my god, I think this is starting

to freak me out a little bit.

I felt like someone just came from my

back and just totally pushed me, completely pushed

me on the ground.

And after that, I realized it was just

nobody.

I thought it was someone that, you know,

that was having some kind of problem or

something, you know, and there was no one.

I totally felt the force of the person

pushing me.

And apparently, if you talk to other people,

they will tell you the same thing.

The janitor actually just told me that he

got pushed down on the stairs.

I fell down the stairs over here, but

it was more like I was pushed down

the stairs.

Really?

Yeah.

And all I imagined that I was going

to break my neck and did a flip

and was able to grab the handrail and

I'm looking straight up once I landed.

I heard one time they cried of a

baby coming out of the bathroom, at the

ladies bathroom.

I was with somebody and we were walking

and suddenly heard the baby crying.

We turned around and there was nothing.

And we went over there and we heard

the story about one time, a long time

ago, a dancer having a miscarriage in one

of the bathrooms, which is still the original

bathroom.

So apparently the fear of the baby is

still there because we could hear now and

then the cry of a baby.

I know they're going to call me, they're

going to want me to come in and

give the place a reading.

And I'd really like to try to get

you in there with the camera.

Right.

Okay, great.

All right.

So I'll let you know.

So anyway, a lot of these stories correspond

to each other.

Like a lot of the people are seeing

this ghost stripper or some say two ghost

strippers appear on the stage.

And you'll have dancers that see that and

you'll have a janitor at six o'clock

in the morning that sees that.

And some people see that there's a guy

that was supposedly died in the basement.

I just saw something on the screen.

There's nothing there.

I don't see anything.

Just a lobby, right?

Just a lobby.

You don't, okay.

Anyway, uh, you know, that's the second time

that's happened.

Something like that because there was something in

that picture.

I swear there was something in that picture.

You're going to have to go back and

check your footage because I'm not seeing anything

that you see.

By this time, the film has taken on

a life of its own.

I find edits where there were none changes.

It changes every time you screen it.

There may be something that looks like a

special effect.

Some may say a cheesy special effect and

then it won't be there the next time

you have a look at it.

You can, it's a very slippery sort of

thing for some reason.

It's almost like the film is possessed or

haunted on its own and has taken on

a life of its own and is changing

itself as time goes along.

I've never had anything like this happen in

all the years of filmmaking.

Our section in the back is called playland

and this is the tunnel above.

It's a little bit dark.

The rest of the building is lit up

until we dim our lights for work hours.

But as you walk in here, sometimes you

can hear footsteps either behind you or possibly

above you, but you know nobody's in the

building.

And as I walk, sometimes I'll hear the

footsteps.

I'll stop.

I don't hear anything.

So then when I think nothing's here and

get this kind of shiver up my back,

I turn around and walk again.

And the same thing happens over and over.

I was in the back one night and

I was taking the money out of the

booths and up through the ground came like

a banging noise.

And I knew that below me was nothing

but cement.

So I figured it had to be some

kind of like ghost or a spiritual event

that happened.

And so it was only me and a

manager and a dancer here that night.

So I got on the radio and asked

if the manager was playing a joke.

And he said, no, how could I?

You know, I'm in the office plus I'm

400 pounds.

So how could I beat you to the

back?

So when I went downstairs and I said,

you know, something had happened to me in

the back, the dancer right away, as soon

as I spoke, she knew what happened to

me.

And so I knew she was like a

clear point and she saw exactly what happened

to me.

She described it to me without me saying

a word.

Do you think they realize they're dead?

Um, I don't think so.

No, I think they're.

Yeah.

Yeah.

Yeah.

That's their energies here.

Oh, see, he kept pulling me.

Used to like to grab people by the

neck.

I'm talking to them.

Don't be upset.

We're not taking over your space.

I've been hearing there's some paranormal activities been

going on.

I have not featured in any paranormal activity

yet, because by my trade, what I do

in my other job, business, I'm an actual

coroner.

I'm not afraid of the ghost at all.

But number one, because I'm always around the

ghost by being in cemeteries, have to put

people underground just to make sure that they

get to their designated spot.

So basically, I haven't felt a friction.

I was actually upstairs in one of the

appointments that we have available to just, you

know, rest or take a nap.

And out of the blue, I see this

face, and it actually makes me feel hot

right now.

It was just this face and this girl
