October 1941. Grim days. The enemy is approaching Moscow,

General of the Army Zhukov, the Western Front Commander, was ordered in a State Defense Committee resolution

to defend Moscow on its western frontiers, i.e. 100-120 km west of the city,

Lieutenant General Artemyev, in command of the Moscow garrison,

was tasked with defending the city on its approaches.

Following the appeal of the Moscow Committee of the All-Union Communist Party of Bolsheviks and the Moscow Soviet of People's Deputies,

Moscow residents turned their city into a giant fortress, barricaded its streets, and turned its frontier posts into bulwarks.

Mechanics, teachers, artists, steelworkers join special volunteer units and workers' battalions.

Women and girls replaced their men, who had left for frontlines, at factories.

All factories and all workshops make weapons.

A grave danger stood over Moscow.

During those days, State Defense Committee Chief Joseph Stalin addressed the nation on the order from the Communist Party's Central Committee.

'Comrades Red Army men and Red Navy men, commanders and political instructors, partisans!

The whole world is looking at you, the forces that are capable of destroying and crushing the hordes of German invaders.

You are viewed by the world that has been temporarily subjected to the German yoke as liberators.

You have been chosen to fulfil the great liberating mission.

Be worthy of this mission.

You are waging an honest, liberating war.

May the bravery of our great ancestors give you strength in this war:

Alexander Nevsky, Dmitry Donskoy, Kuzma Minin, Dmitry Pozharsky, Alexander Suvorov, and Mikhail Kutuzov.

Let the victorious banner of the great time bless you!

For the complete defeat of German invaders!

Death to German occupiers!

Long live our glorious motherland, its freedom and independence.

Under the Lenin banner, forward! On to victory! '

Tens of thousands of workers were building defensive lines in those difficult days.

Moscow residents and members of nearby collective farms put up defenses and tree barriers to stop the enemy's advance to the capital.

Moscow worked day and night producing weapons for victory.

Plants, factories, workshops sent weapons and material to the front nonstop,

Hitler deployed about 80 divisions near Moscow to capture the Soviet capital, Our forces battled far from the city to defiect the Nazis,

Fascists paid dearly for every step they made toward Moscow,

They had to step over their fellows'corpses to move on.

The guards forces of the Great Patriotic War, soldiers and commanders who won glory for their courage...,

..., and who were guided by the single law - victory - were emerging in the battles near Moscow.

Many units have guards banners already,

The nation's best sons rise to defend Moscow,

Arise, our mighty family, Arise to deadly war

With fascist powers of enmity, With all their cursed horde,

Let fury of the noblest sort Sweep seething like a wave.

This is a war, a holy war, Our people's life to save.

We'll give a stern rebuff, will we To the fascists' iron yoke,

To violence, and to robbery, To butchery of the folk.

Let fury of the noblest sort Sweep seething like a wave.

This is a war, a holy war, Our people's life to save.

Day by day bleeding, fascists continued creeping towards Moscow,,,

... inspired by the thought that its suburbs were close already,

But Hitler's general attack was all but finished,

By an order from Comrade Stalin,

the military council of the Western Front prepared for the decisive counterattack.

People are welcoming their liberators,

Partisans are leaving woods where they spent 45 days waging a fierce war.

Oreshki villagers are welcoming their friends and loved ones who fought against fascists dealing strikes from the woods.

Artemy Batov, the Solnechnogorsk City Soviet Chairman, just returned from the woods...

... where he fought in a guerrilla regiment. He is surrounded by city residents.

Right from the battlefield he is heading for his office,

'Comrades, brothers! Solnechnogorsk is ours!
