on a boat, which is so cool.

My parents are
very simple people

with huge, grandiose

ideas in life and adventure.

My dad was in the Navy,

then became a truck driver.

My parents have been very
nomadic the last 15 years.

-Hi, Daddy.

A little bit.
How are you?

-[Jeff] I'm good.
-[Shea Holbrook] How's the leg?

Healing.
Huh?

Yeah?

Leg, yeah, healing.

[Shea Holbrook]
My dad was involved in

a really bad
motorcycle accident.

He almost lost his life.

[person] There she is.

[chuckles]

You could have picked
another week to have surgery.

-Just saying. Just saying.
-I know. I know.

-But I just...
-It's our anniversary.

[Shea Holbrook]
When I started racing,

my family leveraged themselves
financially way too much.

I am so beyond
myself and my team.

I just can't believe we're
back up on podium on the top.

I want to do what it takes
to help take care of my family

just because my dad
has had so many issues.

And with his
motorcycle accident,

my dad had
a heart attack recently.

My parents have had...
you know, they've had it rough.

So, you know.

[sniffling]

I do owe it to them
to be successful.

If I'm successful,
they won't care about

how much money they spent
and sacrificed to...

to support me.

This year,
I feel like more people

are supporting
women in the industry globally.

Well, there's a lot more
female drivers, I think, now.

-[Jeff] Yeah.
-Oh, my gosh.

-I mean...
-Than when you started.

Oh, yeah.

Even still with, like,
Mazda's support,

it still has to be like
pushed even further

down to the grassroots.

Like, it has...some of it has
to come through karting.

[engines rumbling]

[Jeff] If you go to a go-kart
track anywhere in the U.S.,

10% of the field is girls,
literally.

So what happens to them all?

I will tell you what happens.

Envision a family.

They got a girl.

Dad is average American.

He's making middle class money.

And these kids are growing up
go-karting their whole lives.

At some point, Dad is not
saying anything to anybody,

but going, man, my kids
might be pretty good at this.

But how am I going to fund it
to get them to the next level?

I just ran
my fastest lap ever, 50.5.

[Jeff] Girls are out there,
but they get shut off early.

Because they just never
had the opportunity.

Just never had the right thing
put in front of them.

[Shea Holbrook] As a family in
America, things are expensive.

And it's difficult to

give, give, give
resources to children.

And now being a parent myself,
I understand.

Like, you know, you need
to balance your books

and determine what you
can and you can't do.

[Jeff] Because I told this
to a big sponsor CEO

on how to help women
get into motorsports.

You want to help
a nine year old?

Help them at
the grassroots level.

Do something female-related,

which you could do very
inexpensively at a track

or at an event where they're
not giving away anything.

But give a $500 check
to a nine-year-old girl?

-[Shea Holbrook] It helps a lot.
-Oh, yeah.

-[Shea Holbrook] Yeah.
-[Jeff] You know, that...

It keeps them...
keeps the girl and the family

reinvesting and coming back.

Typically, an American family
getting into any form

of motorsports, most of them,

the families come from
affluent backgrounds.

They have good quality
financial jobs.

You find a lot of
business owners.

And then sometimes you have
the wild cards like myself.

A blue collar,
hard-working family

had to pull ourselves up
by our bootstraps

and just kind of make it work.

We've opened up
our lives to this.

[Erin] Yes.

It's so important
to let the world into

our individual lives
of motorsports.

Sometimes, it's generational.

The grandfather, the father,
the son, they raced.

My grandfather didn't do this.
My father didn't do this.

It started with me.

I'm the first generation
in my family.

And hopefully
we'll change that.

I'll become the grandmother,

and, you know,
my daughter and her daughter.

If I can help be a stepping
stone to pave that way,

I think that would make a
really cool story, wouldn't it?

[gentle music]

[Jenny] Some of these houses
have just been put in.

[Heather] Yeah, it looks
like there's more people

since the last time I was here.

[Jenny] Yeah.

You can't imagine
how happy I am.

I'm so happy to have you home.

It's been a long time.

Home.

[Heather] Finally, home at last.

[Jenny] Yay.

My last couple months
have been interesting.

Oh, my God.
What did you put in here?

Everything.

Four years' worth of stuff.

I had to move
back home to California

because I did go
through a breakup

with my boyfriend that threw
a curveball into everything.

Got to get this hung up

and then cleaned
as soon as possible.

I used to have a dry cleaner in
North Carolina, in Mooresville,

and they only
cleaned racing gear.

Oh, really?

So I don't think I'll have
that luxury anymore.

[Jenny] It was hard to be away
from her for that long.

I'm beyond excited
about her being home.

I'm going to go get some
more stuff from the car.

OK.

And we will be flying
now together to races.

[gentle music]

[Heather] I'm at my mom's place.

I was living with my boyfriend
for the last, like, four years.

And we were just, like,

getting into a place of
kind of like a slump, right?

And so I just...
I wanted a change.

My first serious relationship,
I'm only 22,

so four years is a lot.

The breakup took
so much time and energy.

I no longer had a simulator
because of that,

because we were going
to be using the same one.

I was doing final exams.

Just being able to
get through finals

was, like,
an added level of stress.

Every day was very, very hard,

which made it very difficult
to prepare for the next race.

Now everything feels like
it's just falling apart.

It's been tough to put
a lot of time towards racing.

Sometimes life just
gets in the way.

[engines rumbling]

Welcome to sunny California

for rounds five and six
in the Mazda MX-5 Cup.

Get ready for three
action-packed days of racing,

with our two main events taking
place on Saturday and Sunday.

[engines rumbling]

We're packed in
like sardines over here.

-[person] I know.
-[laughs]

[Shea Holbrook] Here at Laguna
Seca, Monterey, California,

the beautiful atmosphere,
sightseeing is just fantastic.

The weather's always good.

It's just such a beautiful site
to come and host a race.

But Laguna Seca in particular,

the track is actually
quite difficult.

There's a lot of
elevation changes.

This is actually dangerous.

[announcer] OK, leaders
coming on by here.

Go.

[announcer]
The last eight minutes.

We'll see if the
aggression goes up.

Yes, it does.

Ortiz is going to go now.

[Shea Holbrook]
The faster these cars go,

the more risks
there are for drivers.

The infamous
corkscrew turn here

is not just known nationwide,
but it's known worldwide.

[announcer] She had no brakes
going into the corkscrew.

Holy cow.

[Shea Holbrook] And it's
infamous for cars losing it

and going off track
on the right-hand side.

It's a dangerous area.

It also is a very dusty place
at this time of year.

The racing surface, it doesn't
always have the best grip.

[announcer]
Now let's see if we can work out

what happened there.

Oh, my goodness me.

It was a huge one.

One, two, three.

Cars go upside down.
They fly in the air.

Like, we have to do
what it takes to help

just protect the drivers.

[upbeat music]

[Heather] I've grown up
watching races on this track.

And it's one of those
where you look at it

and you never think
you're going to be

able to do that yourself.

[announcer]
Well, the pressure is on.

[Heather] There's an iconic clip
of someone making, like,

a passing maneuver
in the corkscrew.

[announcer]
Oh, look.

Here he comes, here he comes,
and he finally gets him!

[Heather] Definitely seen that
a bunch of times.

[announcer] ...takes the
checkered flag from the pole

and the win here at Laguna Seca.

So this is the corkscrew.

You come at...at this corner
completely blind.

You can't see anything over the
crest of the hill right here.

Basically here, just hoping
that you pointed the car

in the correct direction.

Because if you haven't,
it's going to

want to shoot out to the left,
or shoot inside of the track.

I've seen cars just shoot way
out into the dirt over there.

I raced here last year
for the first time.

This was the track
I struggled the most with.

Coming out of this corner,

I made contact with
my teammate, actually.

So it's just one of
those corners that

is a little sketchy
and freaks me out.

This is so steep.

I feel like I'm about to fall.

We think of Laguna as
very much a rhythm track.

Each corner affects
the next corner.

So if you miss a corner,

it's going to affect
the next four or five corners.

And so drivers either
love it or hate it.

[indistinct chatter]

And you remember
everything about Secs

and everything
about the corkscrew.

[engine revs]

[Sally] I've been here
for the past four days,

getting lots of
good sessions in,

getting familiar with the track.

I feel prepared.

I feel like I'm going
to do a lot better than

if we just came without
those practice days.

It should be good.

Yeah, because you
got new tires.

-New tires?
-Hella grip.

It's not the easiest track.

You'd be perfect.

[Sally]
But I actually like it.

I think it suits
my driving style,

because it's all about
the flow of the track.

It just clicks with me.

I want to make sure
we nail this setup.

I think this weekend might be
a breakthrough weekend for her.

She's had a really
good progression

over the last couple of days.

She is very capable of
being a top ten driver.

Hopefully this is the weekend.

We'll find out.

[Sally] Even when
I'm not at the track,

I eat, sleep, breathe racing.

In between the races,
I'm very focused,

a lot of gym
and strength training.

I'm constantly thinking about

how I'm going to
drive the track,

visualizing the corners and what
my race strategy is going to be.

All of the training
behind the scenes,

all the work that has to
be done, it is consuming.

[singer] ♪ I'm the best ♪♪

[Sally]
So much pressure all the time.

But I'm addicted to that.

I want to be the best.

The first step to that is
breaking into the top ten.

The top ten is usually
consistent names.

Jared Thomas, Jeremy Fletcher,

Gresham Wagner, Connor Zilisch,

Aaron Jeansonne.

It's usually the same people

until some of these drivers
can get up there.

And so I'm hoping that
that can be me.

We're midway through the season.

I'm ranked 21st out of 30
of the drivers.

This needs to improve quickly
if I want to be here next year.

Anybody in the top ten
could win it, any given race.

You can battle your way
from tenth to first

in a couple of laps
because it's the MX-5 Cup.

Anything could happen.

[engine revving]

[Jenny]
You have races coming up.

How do you prepare
for, like, the next race

and the next race?

I think just showing up
in the best mindset

so that I don't
overwhelm myself.

If I'm like, oh, my gosh,
I have so much going on,

I have school, I have racing,
I have my other life

outside of this,
it's overwhelming,

and there's really no point
in even thinking like that.

With the breakup,
I have a lot of distractions

going on currently in my life.

Typically, I will overthink
on a general day.

But I need to focus on
why I'm here

and my main goal,
which is to win.

[Jenny] It's not like, you know,

where you can go to
a place like, say, a job

and you can just show up

and maybe you're not
mentally there that day.

[Heather] Yeah.

And being in a race car...

Yeah.

[Jenny] It's dangerous
if you're not mentally there.

Yeah. Mm-hmm.

I just need to be thinking
about the first race tomorrow.

After the first race, we can
think about the second race.

[gentle music]

At BSI Racing,
a lot of our drivers are

16, 17, 18 to 20-year-old kids.

You know the drill.
Take care of yourselves.

Clean up after yourselves.
Take care of each other.

While I'm not their mother,
they call me mom on the team.

I love that about my role.

But while this whole thing
is a roller coaster,

I'm on 1,000 of them,

while everybody else
might be on one.

Calm him down.

If I see him flick a bird
like that again.

I'll pull him out of the car.

Where's the secondary
transponder?

I don't really get
to have a break.

[Nick] I don't know.

'Cause I go back home
and I'm a real mom.

Did you have any dreams?

You just want to go straight

and I, we have two young kids.

They still wake up
at 6:00 AM every day.

I haven't slept in
in five years.

[laughs]

He woke up a little bit earlier
than he normally would.

I never understood this
until I had kids.

The window is so important,

because if it's off by like five
minutes, it could literally...

it's like temper tantrum,
you know?

They go to school
three days a week.

We're very lucky to get them in
when we did,

because they would accept kids
at one year of age,

which was important for me

because of how much
we travel and work.

[phone ringing]

Who's calling me already?

Mom!

They're like,
what do you think your kids

will be when you grow up?
I'm like, I have no idea.

But if there was one thing that
I could say Cooper would be,

he'd be a dentist.

Because the boy is
obsessed with toothbrushes.

He has...we have, like,
25 toothbrushes

all over the house.

And then Olivia
is the master negotiator,

so she'll be a lawyer.

But of course,
they'll be race car drivers.

I better start making
more money.

[laughs]

I had a 15-year career
professionally racing.

And my husband and I decided
we want to have a family.

When I transitioned
my career from

being a professional driver
to motherhood,

it was very nerve wracking
for me because

what's going to happen next?

If I'm not a driver,
then who am I?

I always knew, though,
that I would have a career

in motorsports
even if I wasn't driving.

[banging rhythmically]

Olivia Chorley.

[banging rhythmically]

Nick and I do go home.

We are extremely
present with our kids.

But I am only home on
Monday evenings and Tuesdays

this entire month.

And I couldn't do this without
the support of my parents

helping us raise our children.

and drink my coffee.

I just feel so connected, but
so disconnected from them.

And they're so young
that, like,

they're not going to
necessarily remember.

But it's hard.

You have this
inherent mom guilt.

be absolute shit show

because everybody's going
to go to the outside,

the inside, dive bombing one.

And turn six.

Like, I'm scared
of, like, turn six.

It's going to be the same.

[Sally] Today is race day.

I feel confident for
the first time at a track.

I'm going to put myself in
there, put my foot down,

and I'm going to show people
what I can do.

Top ten.
That would be phenomenal.

to the drivers' meeting.

Just remember,
with all the snaking,

it's not all that easy
to present yourself

in a good, proper fashion.

[Heather] I'm a little nervous.

Tension is just
a little bit higher

because a lot of times,
people just make mistakes,

especially at this track.

Every series in this paddock
is very supportive

of motorsports ministries.

I just wanted to pray.

God, thank you for
this group of drivers.

And this series in particular,

it's always exciting to watch
for such young drivers,

the experienced racing
that goes on.

And I know that our
whole paddock thinks

that way, and the fan base.

with Heather.

A top ten finish is always
going to be very important.

Nothing makes me
prouder than to have

a female up towards
the front in a BSI livery.

So I'm very happy.

What happened to Sally?

I know there was an incident
with Sally Mott

and Woody Heimann.

And I would describe Woody
as a veteran in the series.

He is somebody that
is relatively stern.

So in the event that
there's an incident

and he feels that
he is not at fault,

I would assume that
he will most definitely

approach the situation.

I hadn't heard him say
anything about Sally.

that needs modification,

My name is Randy Buck.

I'm the Race Director for
the Mazda MX-5 Cup Series.

By nature,
every race car driver

is out there to win the race,

with ultimately not a lot of
care for anyone else.

There's contact in
almost every race series.

I'm the one who ultimately
has to make decisions about

what to do when
there are incidents.

[Sally]
We're, like, enemies now.

Don't think about it
as enemies, though.

He's upset.
He has a reason to be upset.

I mean, this is where the
experience comes in, right?

You only have, what, a couple
of races under your belt.

So it's going to take time.

I get the being mad part.

When you're
approaching the corner

and you're not presenting,
like, a good, solid overlap,

you're kind of asking

so a drive-through penalty.

So 25 seconds gets applied
to today's results,

which moves you back
from wherever you were...

The other part of
the conversation

is probation is a thing
that could happen soon.

The ultimate penalty
for a mistake

made while on probation
can be actually

being suspended from a race.

[Sally] I can't be mad at
anybody beside myself.

I just wish it didn't happen
this weekend.

The car felt amazing.

I feel like that would have
for sure been a top ten.

my whole life.

And I am extremely nervous

because last year,
we really struggled

with this race in particular.

Breakfast of champions.

[Sally] I'm just low energy,
pretty much like a zombie.

But, you know.

It's just hard coming back

What a day for racing.

[Sally] I'm very, very happy
with how I did

considering yesterday.

At the beginning,
that was rough.

But honestly, I couldn't really
be mad because, you know,

I did the same thing yesterday

and it was kind of
like instant karma.

[announcer] Sally Mott!

I just drove the best
I could with what I had.

And I started
picking people off.

I finished 11th,
my best finish.

I just need one more spot.

Just talk about your mindset
and kicking off

position after position.

So I honestly...

I drove my heart out,
and I feel like it paid off.

And even though my toe was out

and I was struggling
in some areas, I feel like...

I feel like I did my best
and I stayed focused

and I put on a show
when it mattered.

I learned a lot of lessons
this weekend.

this crap situation.

What can you turn it into?

And it turned out pretty well.

Makes for a good story, right?
