the most committed in all of motorsports.

When the caravan of team trucks
rolls through the town,

they're welcomed
by a sea of spectators

ready to kick things off.

[Heather] We're here at
Sebring International Raceway

for the second weekend
of racing this year,

rounds number 3 and 4.

[Singer] I can never be timid

Start to the finish

Even through the blemishes,
my heart is replenished

Whoo!

[Heather] I'm excited to see
what the atmosphere is like.

I've heard that it's crazy fun.

Sebring is a character
of its own nature.

There's a huge campground.

Their fans are
super enthusiastic,

and so this is like
a spring break-type week.

[Heather] Tons of people come
out here to watch this race,

so I'm just as excited as them.
[laughs]

[engines roaring]

How's school?

Busy.

-Yeah?
-It's busy.

Well, you get a break now.

-You get to have some fun.
-Yeah.

Today I hope to just put down
a really good qualifying lap.

At Daytona, I wasn't entirely
comfortable in the seat,

something to do
with how my left leg was

on the brake pedal.

So somehow,
whether it's gonna be putting

some padding in there
or an insert,

I would just like
to make some adjustments.

And my car chief, Mike,
he's amazing

and he's always trying
to help me with everything.

You've got some new panels
and a mirror.

-Rims too, right?
-Yeah.

-Yeah.
-Yeah.

He's, like, one
of my favorite people

in the whole world
at this point.

Like, he is so, so amazing.

I drove the ten hours
yesterday, down.

-Oh, you drove down?
-Yeah.

It's amazing to have someone
like Mike by my side,

because in racing,
you never know

what's around the next corner,

and you need someone you can
trust to get you through.

We'll talk in a little bit.

Just a couple slides I wanted

to share with you today.

I'm gonna go through most
of these slides

fairly quickly,
because a lot of them

you will have figured out
if you're already here.

[Sally] I've been
studying this track,

looking at onboard footage
for the past month,

just getting ready
for this race.

And hopefully I can
work with my teammates.

If not, there's a lot
of fast people around me,

if they're willing
to work with me.

I would like to think I don't
have many enemies on track.

I mean, I'm pretty new.

So, you know, we'll see.

[country rock music]

[Sally] Our next two races
are at Sebring in Florida.

Not having Sebring
as, like, a local track,

I can't just easily
go and practice

'cause I live in Texas.

So iRacing is a great way
to get track time.

Hey, Heather.

[Heather] Hello.

Hey, you ready to race?

[Heather] I'm ready.

All right.

I reached out and I was like,
hey, do you want to do this?

And she was like, actually,
I was thinking the same thing.

It just kind of lightens
the mood a little bit.

Oh, man, that was...

that was a good corner.

At Daytona, there was contact
between me and Heather.

[engine roaring]

She kind of just tracked out into me.

[thud]
[tires squeal]

-Oh! Oh!
-[tires screech]

Oh! Oh, no!

It was really frustrating.

I feel like I got stolen
out of a chance

to get a very good result.

Do you want to start out
behind me and push,

or do you want me to push
you on the first few laps?

[Heather] Yeah, I'll start pulling you.

She totally could have pushed
me, as well, at Daytona,

because we did talk about it.

When we push each other,
we draft so that

the first car breaks the wind,
which helps you drive

as fast as you can on the track,
and she didn't.

So it kind of showed me,
like, where her mind was.

Like, yeah, let's work together.

But then on track, she wasn't
gonna work with me, so...

Okay, I'm coming up on you.

All right.
You go ahead and pass me.

After she didn't come and talk to me

and be like, hey,
I'm sorry that that happened.

I didn't mean to.

She did text me to apologize,

and she was in a hurry
to get to the airport.

But I don't know.

I feel like it could have been
executed a lot better.

If you back up a little bit
to me right here.

I can give you a bump,
and we can draft

on this back straightaway.

[Heather] The incident with Sally,

I wasn't exactly sure
what had happened.

The race director came up
and told me I got a penalty for it.

-Heather's right here.
-Oh.

[Heather] Hello.

Uh-oh.

I have results.

-[Heather] Bad news.
-Yes, bad news.

It's impactful in that sense of time.

[Heather] Yes. I understand.

Did you know Sally was there?

You just, thought you left enough room
but not enough?

[Heather] It all happened so fast,

but it was just, like,
a mistake on my part.

And I felt really bad.

Not the way I wanted to start
off the year, for sure.

You're faster than me there.

I think I need to work on
that one a little bit more.

I feel like we're okay,
but I want to focus on myself

and just do the best I can.

I don't owe her
anything at all.

And we're not on the same team,

so I'm gonna stay away
from her on track.

My name is Connor Zilisch.

I'm 17 years old.

I've been racing ever since
I was five years old,

and I raced in multiple
different series,

ranging from IMSA,
the top levels of IMSA,

to the MX-5 Cup to NASCAR.

You know, it's gonna be
an exciting few years for me

and a really busy
few years for me.

But you know, in my own head,
I'm still not at the top yet.

So, you know, I'm gonna
keep doing my best

and work hard every day
to, you know,

become the best version
of myself.

Connor Zilisch. [laughs]

Yeah. That guy.

There's a lot of hype
around him,

and rightfully so.

Second-youngest driver
in IMSA history

to start the Rolex 24-Hour,

and then to go win
the damn thing

and win a Rolex?

I mean, that's just, like,
completely unheard of.

[Announcer] Connor Zilisch is
rewriting the books.

17 and could be in any form
of motorsport he wants.

[Shea] He's a special driver.

He's a special talent.

He's like the 1%.

We're hanging on to Connor
as much as we can,

like as a business,
as a team, as a series.

[Shea] And I just think
that, you know,

anytime I can put Connor
Zilisch in a good car,

we're gonna win every time.

We know that Connor
and Westin are

gonna lead the racetrack.

[Westin] I'm Westin Workman.

I'm the winner of the
Mazda Motorsports scholarship,

MX-5 Cup scholarship, in 2023.

I would really love to win
the championship as a rookie.

No one's done it before.

So that's my focus right now:
finishing every race,

being consistent.

I want to win the championship,
but just being here,

being at IMSA,
this is a blessing in itself.

[Shea] Westin Workman,
I mean,

he's a diamond in the rough.

I've been working
with he and his family

for the past couple of years,

doing some amateur racing.

So to have him join the team

and come into
the MX-5 Cup paddock,

you know, I'm very pleased
about it.

You know,
at the end of the year,

it's like you definitely
want to win something.

There's the overall
championship.

There's
the rookie championship.

There's the team championship.

For him to win
the rookie championship

would just be fantastic for us.

But I almost...

I don't want to cap him at that,
because I think

he has the opportunity to win
the overall championship.

All my drivers ultimately
want to be a champion,

and my goal is to make sure
that I get them there.

And of course,
I would love to have

a 1, 2, 3 on the podium.

That's how you know
where everybody is.

[Singer] The way we move
is sick

And all of me is fire,

Today we have
two practices and a qualifier.

This is a hectic session.

His helmet is not plugged in!

It's his helmet!

We want to button things up
and be as ready as we can.

And sometimes that happens.

And sometimes we run
a little bit

and push the envelope
a little bit more.

And just when all this starts,
you're like, man,

I really have
to hit the bathroom.

Every time.

It's a lot of car changes.

It's a lot of checking.

It's a lot of nut
and bolting on the cars.

It's a lot of work
for our guys.

[Singer] So watch me while
I work, hey!

[Shea] Good job, guys.

I don't need to be known
for being a female team owner.

I want people to speak
very highly of my work ethic.

We gotta have a quick meeting
to calm everybody.

I mean, we have
three sessions today.

I've had so many people ask,
you know,

running one
of the larger teams, like,

how do you even really focus

on, like, every driver, every car?

Overall balance
mechanically feels fine.

But we've gotta
fine tune for qualifying.

It takes a lot
to well-oil a machine.

The number-one trait is you
have to be a problem solver.

Something to do with the track
warming up, like...

-[Shea] Okay.
-Whether it be no grip, or...

It went too tight?

It didn't feel like
I had any drive off.

Okay.

I manage everything.

She still feels
like corner off.

She doesn't have, like,
drive off the corner.

All the race car drivers...

Just so you know,
the car shut off again.

Really?

Yeah. That issue.

[Shea] All the crew members...

It's just a lot to take in.

It's exhausting,

but it's exhausting
for all the right reasons.

And I keep coming back,
race after race.

This is BSI.

It's a little surreal
from time to time,

like, walking in,
that this is my office

and these are our tools
and our resources,

and not to mention getting
the opportunity

to run a team
with my husband, Nick.

I am the team principal
and the owner,

as well as my husband,

and owner
and the technical director

overseeing operations.

And this is our territory.

[dramatic rock music]

I had a 15-year career
professionally racing.

[Singer] Well, I came
to my own battle test

I grew up and had my career
in a different era.

For six years,
I was the only female

in the series I was racing in,
for six whole years.

[engine roars]

I was very fortunate.

I worked my ass off.

[beep]
[tires screech]

[engines roaring]

I am so beyond myself
and my team.

I just can't believe
we're back up on podium

on the top step.

My successes were
building relationships

and doing a damn good job
in a race car.

I think what was
hardest for me

stepping away from being
behind the wheel was, like,

this uncertainty
of what's next for me.

And moving into a new role was

really, like,
exhilarating for me.

But certainly there were,
you know, fears around it.

[engine revs]

2019 was my last
professional year

of racing to date.

I'm not retired.

I can't, like, retire myself
in this whole thing.

I just have to say
we're on hiatus.

When I stopped racing,
Nick and I decided

to purchase BSI Racing,

which we sunk all
of our money into.

And when race teams go up
for sale,

the worst idea is
to go fuckin' buy one.

[laughs] Okay?

Because of how hard
the industry is,

and it's just a really
difficult way to make a buck.

Ultimately,
winning is your sales.

You win, you get good drivers.

You win,
you have more business.

You win, you have more money.

That's just how it works.

And the drivers are paying
for the opportunity

to come in
and race with the team.

What they're paying for
is infrastructure,

logistics, personnel,
coaching, and engineering.

Their successes,

podium finishes, championships,

those are a direct result
and directly reflect

the team's successes.

[engines roaring]

All these trophies are
here because they're

kind of like our, you know,

most prized possession
trophies.

Like this one in particular,

this was
the 2022 Team of the Year Award

that Mazda MX-5 Cup hands out.

This is awesome.

This is actually a replica
because the Rookie of the Year

does have the original trophy.

[engines roaring]

But this is Rookie of the Year
for 2022, Connor Zilisch.

His trajectory is amazing,
and it's really fun

to watch him be successful.

And we're super proud because,
you know, he's BSI-built.

And MX-5 Cup is showing
to be a proving ground

to help escalate drivers.

And now I have a hopeful
Rookie of the Year...

Westin Workman.

Westin's somebody
I've been working with

for two years in a team
where I take a lot of pride

in developing drivers.

I couldn't be more happy.

[upbeat rock music]

And while I never needed
the personal recognition...

I never needed that.

It's nice to now have the ability
to say BSI is doing this,

to be able to see your business name

on those cars and on the entry list

and your drivers on the podium.

That, for me, that was
such a great transition

to enable me to push and want to be more

and want to do more
and want to provide more.

[crowd chattering]

The qualifying round is

just moments from starting.

These drivers need to claim
a good starting position

for rounds 3 and 4 ahead.

Selin, go get ready.

We've coined Sebring as
a track to respect the bumps.

The track surface has not been
repaved since World War II.

This was a World War II base
back in the day.

It's very brutal on cars.

It knocks out suspensions.

It breaks car parts.

While it's stressful on cars,
it's ten times fold on the driver.

If you haven't broken ribs
in a race car,

it feels like that's what's happening

in the cockpit of a race car at
Sebring International Raceway.

It's very technical.

It's long.

It's always hot here.

So it's gruesome.

But the ambience is what
makes Sebring, Sebring.

[engines roaring]

[Robby] We need to pick
it up a little bit.

Heather was faster than you
during the practice laps.

She dropped into the 27s.

You were 28.5.

[Sally] My dad, you know,

he's been my driver coach forever.

If I'm not performing
how he knows I should be,

he will let me know that.

He's like, why are we even here
if you're not driving 100%?

In qualifying, I think
a lot of that's gonna be

getting in the right group
and then hanging.

[Nine One One:

as the cars finally get rolling

15 minutes to secure

their two fastest lap times.

The faster their laps,
the better place

they are in the races.

looking to break away
from the slower pack

but a nice recovery by 15, Sally Moss.

These drivers are truly vying
to get the best position possible.

[Sally] Oh, perfect.

Just what we need. Ugh.

[Track Official] Be advised there is
a damaged car

and debris on the track.

Repeat, a damaged car and debris

Hey, what was Heather's,
like, fast lap in the last section?

She was a...a 28.7.

[Brad] She's faster than Heather.

-Right now?
-Yeah.

[Sally] What happened to Jared?

[Brad] He found the wall in turn 17.

[Sally] Jesus.

Not pretty.

Yeah, kinda shocking 'cause
Jared don't usually mess up.

Just goes to show you,
Sebring has no mercy.

[Race Official] All right, everyone,

there's cars on their way, but we're also
picking up some debris around the course.

And there is not
enough time remaining

to do a full timed lap.

So checkered flag.

This qualifying session has ended.

[Brad] They put in the checkered flag.

So that's actually it.

Just a good note,
you're faster than Heather right now.

[Sally] Yeah, I know.
Well...

I wish I could have
gotten some more laps,

but the session was cut short,

so they're gonna end up using
our current fastest laps

to place us in both of the races.

[engine rumbling]

[Heather] I had a really bad qualifying,

27th out of 30 cars.

So basically, to me, dead last.

It's hard because, you know,

I felt like I gave my everything,
and it still was not enough.

Did that...

[Mike] Did they say end
of the track normally, or...

Same place, yes.
Same place.

[somber music]

This is such a performance-
and result-based industry,

in that these drivers think
that one practice,

one qualifier, one race,
if it doesn't go well,

it's gonna be the blow-up of my career.

In the moment, it's acceptable
for them to think that,

but we gotta bring them back
to, like, it's a process.

And this one time doesn't define

what's gonna happen
and forecast throughout the entire year.

Do you feel like shit?

I could be better.

[Shea] Why are you beating
yourself up so much?

What can you control
that you can fix?

Does it feel good,
but it's just not coming together?

Or is it something feels off and wrong?

I think I could be doing better.

But I just...I don't know, like,

with my height, just the way that I hit,

I don't know if it's, like,
completely fixable.

We try to work on it with padding
to bring me forward,

and then it, like,
squeezes me with the seat belt.

One thing always affects another thing.

The average race car driver
is probably around 5' 9",

and Heather is barely pushing 5 foot,

so her small frame does not
fit in a standard seat.

You can ask any race car driver
here in the paddock,

they will all say, like,
if my fitment in the car

is not perfect,
you're not gonna get perfect.

So if we fix that,
would your confidence level

and your ability to feel
like you could drive the car better,

would that go up exponentially?

I would think so.

Okay.
So let's see if we can fix that.

I can relate to her

because I've gone through
every single emotion

that she's going through.

Her emotions are valid.

Her emotions are like, I'm good enough,
but am I good enough?

Heather, you're here because
people believe in you, okay?

You're one of the best, if not the best,

female MX-5 Cup racer
that the series has seen,

possibly ever.

But one year doesn't just
give you this rite of passage

to be at the very top.

This is the most
competitive single-make

of any form of motorsports
in the country right now.

So you're competing
against some of the best.

Give yourself some grace.

Women are programmed
to not ruffle any feathers,

to be polite,

but in racing, you don't have that option.

You have to voice your opinion.

Heather's a badass driver,
but in this environment,

she needs to sometimes
have that same energy

on and off the track.

The other thing, too,
don't ever be ashamed

of your feelings.

Boys that I've worked with
have the exact same feeling,

but they express it
in a really immature way.

They just don't cry.

They throw fits.

Let's address the seat

and let's just hit a reset button

for the exhilarating weekend ahead,

because it is finally time to go racing
at Sebring International Raceway,

as we kick off
with the Mazda Series out on track.

Races compile everything you worked on

from the last race to this point.

The races are the most important.

[dramatic music]

There's definitely a different vibe
from practice one and two,

to qualifying, to race one and two.

[intense music]

You know what's up, babe?

It's no different
than any other start.

Get a good start.

That's always the beginning
of a good race.

So focus on that.

Just put yourself in a position
to kick ass.

got a little damage on the fender.

Might have knocked the toe out a little.

Got a broken stud on the left rear.

Don't know how that happened.

Somebody decided
to pass me on the inside,

apparently not looking,

and I just got sandwiched
in between them.

You were moving up until this happened.

I mean, you got by Sally
and just the momentum

of this just really killed you.

I have a huge support system here at BSI.

Like Mike, he's a huge supporter of mine.

He's a dad of two girls,

so in my eyes, he just, like, gets it.

He wants the girl in the field to succeed.

And, yeah, he just, like,

he has full confidence and faith in me.

You would have been in that pack
had this not happened.

[Sally] It's really valuable
sitting down in the trailer

and going over data,

because you can't
go out on track

and do something that
you don't understand.

All the time that I get
away from the track,

I'm, like, studying.

Like, it's nonstop.

I gotta work really hard to get up there
where everyone else is.

[Heather] Ever since I was nine,

I've known what I've wanted
to do with my life,

which is racing.

Nothing else resonates with me.

Nothing else makes me feel
the way racing does.

It's my purpose in life.

But racing is never a guarantee.

It can be taken away at any second.

So having a backup plan has
always been a necessity for me.

I've been pursuing a degree in college,

studying accounting and finance
while simultaneously

trying to become
a professional race car driver.

It's definitely a lot on my plate.

Like, when I have
a race weekend where I'm like,

man, I could go over data right now.

I could watch the race.

But a lot of times what

and my competitive nature.

That's what we needed.

But I'm very, very happy with that.

same as the race yesterday.

We got my teammate
his first win today, Westin.

Super proud of him.

You know, you're out there
with 30 other cars.

Only one person wins.

You're gonna lose a lot more
than you're gonna win.

And you know,
that's a tough reality to accept

when you're kind of growing up
and trying to make a name for yourself.

And, you know, I've kind of learned
to just take every race

and learn from it.

Glad that we could get the car
on the podium in both races.

[Westin] It was so close.

It was 4/1000 of a second
between me and Connor.

I think I heard him over
the-through my car,

over the exhaust.

I think I heard him when I was
coming across the line.

Yeah, it felt amazing.

I didn't even know I won.

Fourth ever race in the series,
I couldn't be happier

with that result.

You know, finishing 1-2 is
a big accomplishment

for not only the two drivers
that are 1-2,

but the team as well.

And Shea,
Shea is an amazing team owner.

I mean, she cares for everybody.

The fact that she's able
to do all this, care for us,

give us the best car as possible,
it's amazing.

[Shea squeals]

[Heather] We got two cars at podium
and you're happy about...

happiest about me.

I'm mostly just happy that we
moved forward this race.

And we progressed the whole time.

We moved up through the pack,
made passes,

and that's exactly what I was
wanting to do

all three of these days.

feeling terrible.

Her performance wasn't great.

Her results were not great.

She was super down on herself.

We ended the weekend climbing
12 positions,

finishing P14, highest finishing female.

So this session, I think I ran
my fastest lap of the weekend.

I'm not sure what lap it was.

Whenever I get home from a race,

one of the first things I do
is watch race footage.

That's a good turn one.

Probably could've committed
a little bit sooner, but...

My boyfriend, he used to race too.

So I trust his opinion.

I know how good of a racer he is.

I got better here in the race,
on the second race.

I was really happy after race two,

but looking back, I was only 14th.

I was finishing 14th last year,

so I want to be finishing
in the top 10 this year

if I want to be progressing.

But when I'm not at track,

I have a lot on my plate
that I'm juggling.

I'm in my second semester
of senior year,

about to hopefully graduate in June.

It gets difficult with managing
both racing and school.

[Professor] Our exam is next week,
as we said,

so we're gonna do a review.

So if you want to ask questions
about the exam,

it's totally fine.

[Heather] I feel like I've just
been living the school and racing life

for about 12 years.

So I'm over school.

Mm. Yeah.

Remember, I'm giving you now
a double-sided reference sheet.

So there's a lot of stuff on this exam.

[Heather] School takes a ton of my time.

I just want to commit
all my time into racing, and...

and see how much it pays off.
