and we're just lookin' to try to play a little bit better.

We took a punch and we just haven't been able to respond yet.

The Dodgers have a lot of respect for this Yankees team. They know they're explosive.

Yet another home run in Game Three last night.

Yesterday, Charlie was like, "Daddy, you might... Maybe you could win, like, MVP."

But I don't even think he's had a second to really soak it in yet.

His only focus, really, is winning the World Series.

He takes it so seriously.

Like, I think that's how he thrives in baseball

is, like, being so intense, the way that he is.

Years ago, Fred gifted Freddie a necklace with a cross,

and it has his mom's hair in the cross.

So Freddie never takes that off, even while he's playing.

It actually broke right before the World Series.

And we had to, like, overnight it to the jeweler,

and then, like, they got it back right before Game One.

But we're like, "We need this back. ASAP." [chuckles]

So young when she passed away. He was only ten.

But he said one of his earliest memories that he remembers

was that he was at one of his super young games.

His mom was sitting, like, in the outfield,

and he hit a home run, and it literally, like, almost hit his mom.

And I guess she was just jumping up and down, like,

freaking out, like, so happy.

Um...

Ugh, it's gonna make me wanna cry,

but I feel like she was probably doing that in heaven when he hit his grand slam.

Baseball's such a crazy game.

You can be like Aaron Judge, you're incredible all year.

But it's, like, impossible to be good the whole time.

You know, it's like you get hot at a certain time

and you can't control when you're hot or not,

it's just how the game goes.

It's rough. So...

You never know what could happen.

[Kay] Well, it's happened.

Um, we can actually say

this is a literal must-win for the New York Yankees.

They win, they force a Game Five with Gerrit Cole on the mound.

They lose and they go home.

and for the Dodgers up three games to none over the New York Yankees

and 27 outs away from a world championship.

I knew it was gonna be loud. The fans are going to be into it.

[Edman] It does feel like a, you know, very intimate stadium.

You can kinda sense the fans' presence right on top of you.

[crowd cheering]

[Volpe] Game Four, I was looking around the dugout.

Every single guy wanted the at bat, every single guy wanted the ball.

And we were gonna do whatever it took.

[Joe Davis] For the Yankees, the 26-year-old rookie, Luis Gil,

starts with the Yankees' season on the line.

I think that he has the stuff to be a potential Cy Young winner.

In our pregame meeting, it wasn't so much,

"Hey, we're rookies doing the World Series Game Four."

It was more like, "Let's go win. Let's go after these guys because we can."

Hey, we're gonna work together.

If you don't like a pitch I call, just ask me.

I'll talk to you and I'll tell you the truth.

But... But... we're not gonna go back and forth.

[Davis] Dave Roberts sends his lineup to the plate.

Ohtani leading things off, and then Betts and Freeman.

[crowd cheering]

[Nelson] And here comes the pitch from Luis Gil.

[John Smoltz] See, that's the only problem.

This is his first home postseason start.

The adrenaline is rushing.

[Davis] Ohtani sends a pop fly into shallow center field.

We're off and running in Game Four with a pop out to short.

[Roberts] Obviously Shohei was hurt, compromised,

and he wasn't swinging the bat great.

But to still hang in there, that was huge.

[Jon Sciambi] And the batter now will be Mookie Betts.

That's poked down the line and a fair ball into the right field corner.

[cheering]

[Nelson] The ball finally gets to Soto.

Mookie will stand up at second with a one-out double in the top of the first.

[Davis] Freddie Freeman at the plate.

Trying to start it early for the Dodgers again.

He ended Game One, he started Game Three.

A little rain falling here in Game Four.

He's up there with Betts at second.

[Chelsea] Get out.

[Sciambi] Slammed, and a ball drilled, right field, curling back, gone!

He's done it again!

[Nelson] Freddie Freeman, simply unstoppable!

[Davis] Four games, four home runs.

You gotta be kidding!

It's unbelievable.

Freddie, he was on fire.

Everything that he gets up in the strike zone,

it was a homer.

[Roberts] I just felt we had all the momentum.

And not to say that I felt that we were gonna run away with it,

but I thought we had the game in hand.

The bottom of the first is about to begin.

You know, everyone was talking about, "You just need to score first."

Sure, we wanna get a lead, but we can win if we don't too.

And we got no choice right now.

[Nelson] What an opportunity for the rookie Ben Casparius.

It wasn't that long ago Ben was in the minors,

and here he is starting a potential World Series clincher for the Dodgers.

Fly to right by Torres, Betts in the corner.

Does he have room?

- Yankee fan ripped it out of him. - Oh, shit.

[Davis] Betts has that ball in his glove

and this fan literally tries to take his glove off.

That was really wild. I have never experienced anything like that.

I don't know what he was really trying to do.

[Betts] It was, like, the second time in my life I've ever wanted to fight someone.

So Betts went right into the corner and the wall.

[Waldman] Well, he's got the ball. You can see it. He's got it in his glove.

The fan in the Yankee uniform is prying the ball out of Mookie's glove.

[Nelson] I mean, absolutely absurd.

We knew from that moment that they were going to do

anything in their power to get into our heads.

[Waldman] This guy should be kicked out of this game.

[Davis] Four-pitch walk, and the Yankees have their first base runner.

It's a broken record on this, but somebody's gotta give a jolt

to this lineup and to this stadium.

Aaron Judge comes up.

[Monday] You don't throw that fastball in a good spot right here,

you're looking at tie game.

[umpire] Ball, that's off the plate!

[Sterling] Outside, ball four. Judge walks.

And the Yankees have the tying runs on.

[Davis] To the plate comes Stanton.

This guy's been one of their best hitters all postseason.

Now, here's Mark Prior.

The pitching coach to come out.

[Roberts] In the postseason, you gotta turn into a street fighter.

And with street fighting, there are no rules.

These guys have long arms, and if they get extended,

they're gonna really hurt you, so you have to crowd 'em.

[Nelson] Casparius's first-pitch fastball up and in.

[Roberts] You don't try to hit anybody or let alone hurt anybody,

but you just can't have them have their way and lean out over the plate.

That's just baseball.

There's Gavin Lux straight up with the bag at second.

Throws on the run across his body.

And Ben Casparius wiggles out of a jam in the bottom of the first.

[Davis] The Yankees try to do something that's never been done,

It's already 2-nothing. They can't wait long.

[Nelson] Now here's Anthony Volpe, the young shortstop.

[Davis] And another walk.

[Sterling] Here's the catcher, left-hand-hitting Austin Wells.

[Wells] I just felt like, in that game, they have the pressure,

they have to win one more,

and just go up there and enjoy it and fight to the last pitch.

[Nelson] Hit in the air, right center field.

Kiké Hernández on the run. He's at the wall.

He cannot make the catch!

It bounces off the wall.

It ends up being a double for Austin Wells.

[Sterling] Volpe goes to third, and they're gonna hold him.

Yankees have second and third and one man out.

[Davis] Here's Alex Verdugo.

Verdugo... Grounds one to first.

Freeman's got it, takes it to the bag. They do get Volpe home.

That's a run they absolutely had to have.

[Rizzo] They played really well

and they had massive hits, obviously, but we have that "one day" mentality.

"Just win today."

We have the pitching, we have the bullpen, we have the offense.

[Sciambi] We go to the bottom of the third.

It's the Dodgers 2 and the Yankees 1 here in Game Four.

[Nelson] Now Aaron Judge to the plate.

[Davis] Look out!

[Sterling] Did it hit him? I think it did.

He plays the carom perfectly and somehow holds Chisholm to a single.

Judge goes first to third, and the Yankees have 'em cornered.

[Davis] The Yankees, their season on thin ice.

[Sterling] And here is Giancarlo.

When my grandfather was a baby,

my great-grandfather, he went and fought in World War II.

And when he came back, he didn't know him, didn't recognize him.

The way he got to know my great-grandfather,

he sat on his lap every single night and they listened to the Yankees.

[Volpe] I didn't know if it was out, but I knew I barreled it good.

And then right when I realized it was over the fence, I blacked out.

It was amazing.

[Boone] You finally got to see the top blow off Yankee Stadium

in a World Series game.

The energy. You know, the noise.

The excitement.

[Davis] A jolt through the stadium and through this series.

[Sterling] And we go to the bottom of the 6th. Austin Wells.

Sends it a mile! It's gone!

The sleeping giant has awoken.

Verdugo, on the ground to second. Coming home is Lux!

[Freeman] The players and the fans are just feeding off each other.

They just kept building on it in that game and kept scoring more and more.

[Sciambi] 7-4, New York, but now it's Gleyber Torres.

[Sterling] A fly ball to deep right.

Betts going back. That ball is gone!

[Sciambi] Gleyber Torres! A three-run homer over the wall.

And the Yankees have broken it open!

It's 10-4 here in the Bronx.

[Rizzo] You got the Bleacher Creatures doing their thing, screaming.

You got beer flying everywhere. We didn't want to go home.

We wanted to force a Game Seven,

but to force a Game Seven, we had to win Game Four.

[Davis] Judge hooks a line drive to left field, and that's in for a hit.

It's just a contagious feeling

when you have everybody, one through nine, in that lineup

all laser locked in like that.

[Davis] It's 11 runs for the Yanks.

[Roberts] I started to see Judge come to life.

It just seemed like he was a little bit more patient,

seeing the ball a little bit longer,

and that's something that started to scare me.

[Eduardo Pérez] To be able to get not only a base hit and an RBI,

for Aaron Judge, this is huge.

It takes a lot of weight off his shoulders.

[Sterling] And we go to the ninth inning.

The Yankees have a very safe 11-4 lead.

[Davis] Dodgers down to their last strike in Game Four.

Into center field.

- Judge comes on. He's got it! - [crowd cheers]

[Sterling] Ball game over. Yankees win.

[Sterling] The Yankees win!

[Nelson] There's beer being thrown around Yankee Stadium in celebration.

The Bombers will stave off elimination for at least one more night.

[crowd cheering]

[Judge] Look, we know what's at stake. You know...

You know, we're playing for our lives, so...

Just because our backs are against the wall,

it hasn't changed our mindset, especially with this group, who's been through a lot.

All we gotta focus on is winning another game. That's it.

[clicks tongue] Hi, honey.

Let me make sure you all right.

[all chuckling]

That was unbelievable.

- I ain't never seen that in my life. - I've never been a part of it.

I just wanna make sure we're on the same page.

but the Yankees came back with a jab.

And all of a sudden, you kinda feel like that mo has shifted towards the Yankees.

[commentator 3] You left the door open, and truly great teams,

when you give 'em an inch, they take a mile.

That door slithered open, the Yankees have a chance to kick it down.

[Sterling] The Yankees have to win to continue their season.

One win from an eighth world championship.

[Volpe] I feel like we were really confident

in what knew what we can do if we executed.

Getting it back to LA. That was our goal.

[crowd cheering]

[Nelson] And it's a matchup of these teams' aces:

Gerrit Cole for the Yankees and Jack Flaherty for the Dodgers

in a Game One rematch.

[Nelson] You expect Ohtani to be aggressive here tonight

as he tries to make his mark on this World Series.

Gerrit Cole into his windup. The first pitch of Game Five.

Ohtani swings and lifts it high in the air, shallow right center field.

Aaron Judge calling for it and catching it.

One pitch, one out for Cole here in the first.

Now Mookie Betts.

[suspenseful music plays]

Picked up by Rizzo, who'll step on the bag on his own.

Now, the guy who's been the toughest task

for the Yankees so far in this World Series, Freddie Freeman.

[Davis] You talk about sending a message. He's done just that.

Two-run home runs in the first inning of both games here.

[Smoltz] Yeah, he has been locked in.

He'll be wanting to be aggressive on the first pitch.

He usually is.

[Sciambi] Swing and a high fly ball left field.

Playable. Verdugo backing up, under it, and he makes the catch!

And Gerrit Cole gets them one, two, three.

[Nelson] Now it's Jack Flaherty's turn.

I felt so ready to go for Game Five.

Body felt good. Felt like, you know, ball was coming out good and everything

and felt in a really good place that day.

[Davis] Juan Soto comes to the plate.

You talk about Cole setting the tone. Flaherty's gotta set one of his own.

[Smoltz] For Jack Flaherty, all he has to do is match.

And Aaron Judge coming to the plate.

[Sciambi] And listen to the crowd greeting Judge

as the big slugger steps in on the right side.

Yeah, the fans bring a different level to it.

They bring the edge where you know you can't fool 'em, you can't trick 'em,

and they want to see winners.

But these fans are faithful. You know, they appreciate the hard work.

And, you know, they're cheering us on from the very first pitch to the last out.

[Smoltz] First pitch, I would imagine,

will tell you a lot about Aaron Judge and tonight.

[Sterling] And it is high. It is far.

Especially when you got Gerrit Cole on the mound,

and you give that guy a couple of runs,

good things are gonna happen.

[Davis] I'd say he's figured it out.

[Smoltz] Well, right now, there's a lot of people in the other clubhouse

putting together a different game plan if they have to face him in Game Six

'cause he's a different player.

[Flaherty] Wanted to get through that first inning 0-0.

I miss. He puts a good swing on it.

[Davis] Infield pulls in in the second inning as Alex Verdugo comes up.

Flaherty could really use a strikeout.

Alex Verdugo drives in Anthony Volpe, and it's four to nothing.

[Verdugo] Definitely felt like we started getting some momentum.

Having better at bats. Driving the ball a little bit better too.

And we were where we wanted to be.

This guy doesn't have it tonight.

[Monday] And Dave Roberts cannot stay on this train any longer.

He's gonna have to change.

[Roberts] As a manager, I'm playing chess.

And you've gotta figure how much leash you're gonna give the starter.

[Volpe] I feel like we're feeding off the energy of the fans

and the atmosphere in the stadium,

and really doing damage and attacking and kind of making them feel us.

[Monday] My big question. Where did the Dodgers go?

[Nelson] And they better find themselves quick.

[Rizzo] We felt good. Won game four, we're up now in game five, like...

Now there's some momentum going. Now there's some more belief.

You start to feel like there's some momentum shift.

So your mind starts to think about, like, what does Game Six look like.

[Roberts] We were already thinking about Yoshinobu

trying to get a flight back to LA earlier to get some rest for a Game Six,

and then thinking about who's potentially available to pitch

because those guys had all the momentum.

[Sterling] Yankees with a 5-nothing lead

as we play here in the top of the fourth.

[Davis] So here comes the man of the moment in Los Angeles,

Freddie Freeman.

[Freeman] You're just, like, nah, this game's kinda...

this isn't what we envisioned at the start of this game.

And the fans were into it again. Like, they were going nuts.

And... "Okay, like, come on, just get one. Like, chip away."

[Davis] Launches this ball left center field.

Judge on the run.

He's still going. He's at the wall.

- And he's got it! - [crowd roaring]

Aaron Judge putting his stamp on Game Five!

[Hernández] You see that big man going after that ball.

It was like... wow.

That was an amazing catch.

[crowd cheering]

[Roberts] In 2004, I was part of a team where we came back

from a 3-0 deficit in a seven-game series.

And then it started to little bit bleed into my head,

like, I don't wanna be on the other side of this.

I can start to feel that scent bleeding into my psyche a little bit.

[Davis] Dodgers still looking for their first hit against Cole.

[Monday] Dodgers desperately need something to feel good about.

They didn't play well last night at all,

and up to this point, they haven't played particularly well either.

[Sterling] Here is Kiké Hernández.

[Sciambi] Swing and a line drive and a base hit out into right center field.

Kiké Hernández aboard,

and for the Dodgers, their first hit of the night.

[Roberts] That hit was huge.

Kiké, he just lives for the postseason.

He just has a way like I've never seen

to just lock in, um, in the biggest of moments.

[Sterling] And here's Tommy Edman.

[Nelson] Another 0-2. Tommy Edman to center field.

[Edman] Initially off the bat, I was like, "Oh, that's got a chance to fall."

Then I see Judge camped under it and was like, "Oh, dang. That's a bummer."

- [Sterling] Oh, my God! - [Chelsea] Go, go! He dropped it!

[Sciambi] Oh, he dropped the ball!

[Nelson] He clanks it in center. He clanks it!

[Sciambi] Racing for second is Hernández, and he slides in safely.

[crowd cheering, clamoring]

[Hernández] I think it happens to every outfielder.

An easy line drive and you might take your eye out of the ball

for, like, a second,

and you move the glove and you'll drop the ball.

[Waldman] By the way, that's his first error of the season.

- [Sciambi] Wow. - [mouthing words] Fuck.

And now the Dodgers in business.

Two on, nobody out.

[Edman] I was like, "Oh, my gosh. That's our window.

We got a chance to make something out of this inning."

[Davis] A little crack in the door here. Down 5-nothing.

But a couple runners aboard, and Will Smith,

who went deep in yesterday's game, at the plate.

[fan] Come on, Cole. Get outta this.

[Smith] There's no game in the World Series

you wanna just fold over and let them win 'cause they jumped out to a lead.

Anything can happen.

[Nelson] Volpe to his right, going for third to get Hernández.

The ball skips away from Chisholm.

Everybody's safe.

[Chelsea cheering] Yeah!

And the bases will be loaded.

Goddamn it.

[Davis] It was gonna be a tough play, but one the Yankees should make.

[Roberts] Kiké just does a great job of bending out and getting in Jazz's way

and then caused a bad throw.

That's something that doesn't show up in the box score,

but that's something that was a big, game-changing play.

[Volpe] Kiké made a good play getting in my throwing lane,

and I just made a bad throw.

It's something I gotta live with.

[Davis] This has been one of the big differentiators throughout this series,

the Yankees' defense, sloppy.

It's the nine hitter, Gavin Lux.

- All right, let's do it, Lux. - Go.

[fan] Come on, Cole. Be the ace you are.

[Sciambi] Cole, kicks, fires.

[Davis] Got him! Ninety-nine again!

Tailing away for the first out of the fifth!

[Smoltz] Nothing has changed, demeanor-wise, from Gerrit Cole.

Even the errors didn't make him twitch.

[Sciambi] But Cole not out of the woods yet.

Here comes Shohei Ohtani.

[Davis] The fast ball ties him up, and it's one and two.

[Wells] Gerrit, even after the errors and everything that happened,

he had the utmost confidence in his ability to get outs and compete.

[Sciambi] The 1-2.

Swing and a miss! He struck him out!

Cole fans Ohtani, and there's two away.

[Davis] Superstar against superstar on the biggest stage,

and Gerrit Cole wins it head-to-head.

[Roberts] I was like, "He's gonna find his way to get out of this inning."

[Sciambi] And now it's Mookie Betts.

Swing, and a little roller to first. Rizzo is there.

He goes to underhand but nobody covers!

And everybody's safe.

[Nelson] Nobody was covering the bag! Nobody covered it!

[cheering]

And that is how the Dodgers break through.

[Davis] Atrocious defense from the Yankees

leading directly to a Dodger run in the fifth!

[Edman] It was crazy, 'cause in the first inning,

Mookie had hit almost the exact same ball

that Rizzo had fielded and just made the out himself.

So I think when Cole saw Mookie hit that ball,

he kinda just had déjà vu and was like,

"Okay, that's the same ball. Rizzo's gonna get to first."

[Rizzo] As a first baseman,

the ones that are spinning, those are probably the hardest plays.

So, I just played the hop conservatively, and I looked up to flip it to Gerrit,

and there was just a miscommunication on both of our parts.

Come on.

[fan] That's basically three errors in the same inning.

The fundamentals on this team are just so bad.

[fan 2] That's terrible.

Hey, we'll take it.

Hey, Freddie's about to bang right now.

Freddie's about to hit it out. Tie the game up.

They'd given us about five outs in this inning.

Mookie hits a ball, and they didn't cover first,

and we got a run.

We had two outs, I was like, "Gotta get a hit."

[Nelson] So now Freddie at the plate. Two outs in the fifth.

They're still loaded.

[Freeman] I wasn't thinking grand slam or anything.

I was just like, "Keep this line moving. Let's keep it going."

[Davis] Into center field a base hit.

[Chelsea screaming]

[Davis] Two more runs will score.

The Dodgers take advantage of the bad defense from New York.

And this game has changed in the blink of an eye.

Freddie!

Freddie! Let's go!

Goddamn it. Just get an out.

[Davis] Mistakes stacking up

and letting a team like the Dodgers right back in the game.

- Just like that. We're back. - [Chelsea sighs]

[Nelson] At the corners for Teoscar Hernández.

[Hernández] You know when you had a feeling

that everything is gonna go your way?

We had that in that game.

[Davis] In the air to left center field.

Judge on the run, dead sprint now.

To the track and it's over his head!

[Nelson] Mookie scores! Here comes Freddie!

[Davis] This game has been turned upside down!

[Davis] The Yankees crack the door open with the poor defense,

and the Dodgers kick it down.

A five-run fifth inning and a tie game in Game Five.

[fan] That is disgusting.

[Roberts] It's a no-hitter.

They're up 5 to zip, and we got a tie ball game.

[Waldman] If they lose this game, it's their own fault.

[Sterling] Boy, is it ever.

[Davis] This team is just too good to give an inch,

and they've given a mile.

Thirty-eighth pitch of the inning from Cole.

[Cole] Feel like we come in the dugout and we're like... [scoffs] ..."Wow."

It is a little hard to comprehend,

but, I mean, at the same time, you know, we're still in the ball game.

[crowd cheering]

[Sterling] Now, to the bottom of the sixth.

The new pitcher is Brusdar Graterol.

Very hard-throwing right-hander.

[Roberts] Graterol, he's, uh, typically an efficient pitcher.

I'm counting outs and trying to figure out how I keep this game as close as possible.

[Davis] The guy they call "Bazooka," Brusdar Graterol.

Gonna have his work cut out for him here. Soto, Judge and Chisholm comin' up.

[Sciambi] Three and two, here we go. Nobody on, nobody out. The pitch.

[umpire] Ball four.

[Sciambi] Ball four.

And the go-ahead run is aboard.

And here comes Aaron Judge.

[Davis] Highs of highs and low of lows in this game for him and for the Yankees.

[Rizzo] The last inning. It was tough to swallow,

but definitely didn't feel like we were out of it.

We always knew we were one swing away.

That's always our mentality.

[Sciambi] Three and two. The pitch.

[Nelson] Called a ball.

At the outside corner. An edgy pitch and it goes New York's way.

[Sciambi] Graterol can't believe it, and now the first two have walked.

[fans chanting] Let's go Yankees!

[Sterling] First and second, no one out. And here is Chisholm.

[Dodgers player] Oh, turn it!

[Davis] Lux will go to second for one.

That's all they'll get with the speed of Chisholm.

And the Yankees have 'em cornered with one away.

[Sciambi] And Giancarlo Stanton is gonna get a chance

to give the Yankees the lead.

The pitch.

[Sterling] Swung on and hit in the air to left center.

Back goes, Teoscar.

And... Kiké, he makes the catch.

[Sciambi] Tagging from third and coming in to score is Soto.

Tagging to second is Chisholm.

And he's in!

And it's 6-5 Yankees on a deep sac fly by Giancarlo Stanton.

[Rizzo] We got punched. We responded.

It's just about comin' in and not letting it affect you.

You have to stay focused on the next pitch.

[Monday] Stanton just missed from hitting a three-run home run.

[Roberts] That point in time, I was thinking, "Was I gonna be all-in or not?"

Because, you know, we were stretched pretty thin with our staff.

But I just felt our guys did enough to earn the right

for me to exhaust every option to play to win that game, that night,

and not look towards a potential Game Six.

[Davis] Dave Roberts, looks like, gonna make a change here.

Blake Treinen's ready to come in as early as he's been deployed in this postseason.

[Roberts] We couldn't give up any more runs,

so I went to Treinen to stop that momentum.

[Treinen] It was earlier than I'd been called in,

so that aspect caught me off guard a little bit, but I was A-OK.

I've gotta go at least one-plus innings.

[Davis] Treinen's been their top guy in this postseason.

Is Blake Treinen running out of gas, though?

He's given up a run in three consecutive outings.

[crowd cheering, clapping]

[Sciambi] Treinen fires.

Swing and a ground ball.

Right side, Lux gobbles it up, throw to first. In time.

[Nelson] And that ends the sixth inning.

So Treinen comes out of the bullpen, strands a pair,

but the Yankees score one and take the lead back.

[Sciambi] 6-5, Yankees on top. We go to the eighth.

Tommy Kahnle will take over.

And Kahnle to face Kiké Hernández.

[Davis] Rips a line drive base hit to left field.

[first base coach] Right here, right here, right here.

[Davis] He started the rally in the five-run fifth.

He starts this eighth with a base hit.

[Sciambi] And Dodgers have the tying run on base.

That's the last. They get to bullpen, they got this game.

- Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. - Mm-hmm. They got this game.

[Sterling] Now here's Tommy Edman against Kahnle,

and he's batting from the right side.

[Nelson] ...runs in that frame. Tommy Edman, broken-bat ground ball.

[Sciambi] Volpe dives, grabs it, but everybody's safe.

Yeah, yeah, Edman!

[Davis] Volpe's able to smother it, but it didn't mean much.

Hernández to second, and Edman on a broken-bat roller has an infield hit.

[Sciambi] Smith, oh for three.

[Nelson] Inside. Ball four.

A four-pitch walk.

Load 'em up for Gavin Lux.

Jesus Christ. This is the bottom of the lineup.

- Déjà vu. Bases loaded. - Yeah. Yeah.

- Yeah. - Uh-oh.

[Sterling] And here's Aaron Boone, and he's not gonna wait any longer.

He's gonna go to his number one guy in the bullpen.

[Davis] Weaver, for the first time in his career,

is going to pitch three consecutive days.

And will come in to a bases loaded situation and a one-run game.

There are not going to be any nails left to bite in the Bronx

by the end of this one.

Come on!

[Nelson] The Dodgers have Gavin Lux at the plate,

bases loaded, no out.

Throw strikes.

Get in there and throw strikes.

[Nelson] Here's the pitch.

Aaron Judge drifts over to his right.

Kiké Hernández tagging from third.

Sacrifice fly Gavin Lux, and we're tied once again.

It's six-all.

Good job!

[Monday] Tommy Edman able to tag up from second

and wind up at third base.

[Nelson] Mookie Betts digs in.

Oh, my God, my heart is beating fast.

Anything. Please, honey. Anything.

- Please, please, please. - Ooh, wow.

[Brianna] Please, come on.

[Nelson] Weaver sets...

kicks and fires.

[crowd cheering]

Judge backs up, Edman tagging from third.

Here he comes.

Another sacrifice fly, and the Dodgers have the lead in Game Five.

[Edman] So much excitement, you know, touching home plate.

All right, we got the lead.

[Davis] From down 5 to nothing to ahead 7-6 in the most preposterous way.

[Dodgers clamoring]

[Nelson] Bottom of the eighth. The Dodgers now lead the Yankees 7-6.

But New York has exactly the part of the order due up that they want.

[Treinen] I looked at Doc and I was like, "I'll keep going."

And he was like, "All right."

My calf had, like, cramped up a little bit on me that previous inning

and I had our trainer, Greg...

I was like, "Greg, you gotta loosen me up, it's cramping."

And I just prayed for myself, like, "Lord, we scratched all the way back.

Let me put up another zero for these guys."

[Davis] One gone in the eighth and Aaron Judge.

This crowd's so nervous.

Eerily silent in here.

Judge trying to bring them to life.

Captain at the plate.

[Sterling] Lined... Base hit!

- Over third, down the left field line. - [crowd cheering]

Extra bases for Judge.

[Davis] He's got a double. Tying run in scoring position in the eighth.

[Treinen] He hit a double down the line, and I'm thinking,

"You need to figure this out."

[Davis] How much more does Treinen have left?

[Nelson] Treinen has already pitched an inning and a third.

[Davis] 3-1.

Takes ball four.

The go-ahead run is on.

And Giancarlo Stanton's coming up.

It's too many pitches. They've got to take him out.

[Davis] Will it be against Treinen,

or does Dave Roberts dip into that bullpen?

[Treinen] So Doc's walking out, gives me the hands kinda like pumping down.

"Calm down." Like, "We're gonna talk."

[Roberts] I wanted to slow the game down, hit pause and just check in on Blake.

[Treinen] Then he comes out and he's like, "How are you feeling?"

I was like, "I feel fine, Doc."

And he was like, "Can you give me one more out?"

And I was like, "Absolutely, like, I-I want this guy."

[Roberts] Wanted to look him in the eye, put my hands on him, see how he felt.

[Treinen] And he's like, "Okay, this is your last guy."

And I was like, "All right."

[Nelson] How about this call from Dave Roberts

to leave Blake Treinen in the game.

He's approaching 40 pitches.

The Yankees have the tying run on second, the go-ahead run on first.

One out on the eighth inning,

and the Yankees most clutch postseason hitter at the plate,

Giancarlo Stanton.

[tense music plays]

[Davis] First pitch.

Lifted down the right field line.

He's under it. He's got it.

Whoo!

[Freeman] Nice! Let's go.

[Davis] Stanton's the second out.

[Treinen] Doc told me that if I looked in the dugout, he was pulling me.

[Roberts] I'm looking at Blake. Blake doesn't look at me.

[Treinen] You can't take me out after just one pitch.

There's no way. You gotta leave me in for one more guy.

[Roberts] I'm on the top step watching his demeanor,

knowing what I told him.

But it was one pitch, stuff was still good.

I look at Freddie in the distance...

[Freeman] And I'm just staring at Doc.

Doc looks at me, and I said, "Mm-mmm."

I just shook my head and I was like, "Let's die with Blake on this mound.

We have to."

[Roberts] Freddie's been in this game for a long time.

I trust his feel, his heartbeat, his gut, all that stuff.

I trusted him that particular moment, 'cause I was wavering.

And I just decided to stand down.

And I said, "This is his guy."

[Sterling] Well, here is Rizzo, with runners at first and second.

Two out.

[Sciambi] Blake Treinen giving it all he's got.

[Smoltz] He's on fumes right now.

[dramatic music playing]

[Nelson] Got him swinging!

[Davis] Blake Treinen digs deep!

And the Dodgers are three outs away from a world championship!

[Treinen] It was probably the most special moment of my career,

to have gone two and a third and hopefully have bought ourselves

a clean inning for whoever was gonna come in.

[commentator 4] I don't know who Dave Roberts is gonna go to next.

Man, he's running out of arms quick.

[Nelson] And look who is warming up in the pen.

Walker Buehler now throwing.

[Gomes] We're getting on the bus to go to the stadium

and Walker sits down behind me.

He's like, "Hey. I feel good, it's my bullpen day.

I'm good to pitch if you need me."

And I was like "Look, Walk, we're in a really good place."

He's like "All right. If things get wonky, I'll be ready."

I'm like "Okay." So, I let Doc and everybody know.

[Roberts] And I tell them to text Walker back, "No, thank you."

Because he was our Game Seven starter.

He had just pitched two days ago.

So then, we're going through this game, and the sixth inning rolls around.

So, Walker being a smart player, is looking at who's available.

So then he goes to me, "I'll be in the bullpen if you need me."

[Buehler] I don't think anyone thought I had a chance to get in that game

and I messed around and said "I just came here to hang out with you guys."

But as that game keeps getting a little weirder and weirder,

and you're kinda looking around doing the math in terms of who's left,

and who is tired, and who's this, and who's that...

By the eighth inning, Treinen is in a Herculean spot

in terms of going two and a third.

And there was no one else left.

And it's like, "All right. I think I've got the ninth inning."

[Roberts] We have the lead.

So I'm just thinking, "We have to just go for it right now."

And if something happens and they tie it up,

I'll be prepared for the fallout.

For a potential Game Seven, Walker would certainly be spent for the series.

When you're exhausting everything

and you're putting everything out there with no margin for error, that's scary.

[Nelson] It comes down to this in Game Five.

Bottom of the ninth, Yankee Stadium.

The Dodgers 7, the Yankees 6.

LA three outs from a world title.

[Freeman] When Walker came in, I was like,

"Wait a second, you're supposed to be starting Game Seven if we need, like..."

This is... Oh, man! We're going for it.

[Nelson] The Dodgers are turning to Walker Buehler.

Out of the bullpen for the first time since the end of June in 2018.

And it comes in a potential World Series clincher.

[dramatic music playing]

[Buehler] I felt so weightless

and I think that adrenaline, kind of feeling in that moment,

you're just trying to get your warm-up pitches going,

and never really done it before.

So, we'll see what happens.

[Davis] Anthony Volpe, Austin Wells, Alex Verdugo,

trying to extend the Yankees' season.

First pitch from Buehler.

One ball, no strikes.

[Smoltz] That's the one thing to watch for, okay?

Adrenaline will be fine with the miles per hour.

But the command. Will he have the command?

[Hernández] So nervous.

It's just only one run in Yankee Stadium.

Anything can happen. You're facing the Yankees.

[Davis] The 2-2.

Breaking pitch. Grounder to third. Muncy's got it.

One gone in the ninth!

So, now it's Austin Wells.

[Nelson] One out, nobody on.

[Sterling] Here's the 2-2.

It's low. Three and two.

[Nelson] This count is full.

[Nelson] Swing and a miss! Strike three!

That's two!

[Davis] The Dodgers are one out away.

And it's up to the former Dodger, Alex Verdugo,

to try and keep things alive for the Yankees.

Buehler throws!

And misses downstairs.

Top of the order, Gleyber Torres, if Verdugo can reach.

Swing and a miss! One ball, one strike.

[dramatic music playing]

[Nelson] Buehler comes home. Verdugo whiffs again. That's strike two!

[Davis] The Dodgers a strike away.

[tense music playing]

[Davis] Start the party, Los Angeles!

Your Dodgers have won the World Series!

[Nelson] That's it! It's a World Series win for LA!

[Sterling] Ball game over! World Series over!

[Boone] Obviously, this is a very difficult moment for us.

You get to this point...

You know, as I said to the guys,

it stings now but this is... this is gonna sting forever.

You know, I'm 51. You know, I poured my life into chasing that.

And when you get that close, you know, it's...

I'm-I'm heartbroken. I'm heartbroken.

And I'm heartbroken for those guys that pour so much into this.

The ending is cruel.

[Jazz] We make errors, you know.

And they were capitalizing on our mistakes.

You know, and that's how you win baseball games,

capitalizing on the other team's mistakes.

You know, we came up short and, uh, just...

It's just... It's brutal.

A lot of different things, to be honest, um...

Getting the chance to see Yankee Stadium rockin' and rollin' like that

the past couple of nights was pretty special.

You battle through so much throughout the season,

all for it to come to these final games like this.

will stick with me until I die, probably.
