This guy is one of the greatest.

Everything that I've always
heard, I now understand.

- He had everything
that you needed to be

a great professional wrestler,

and one of the great minds in
the history of the business.

- In professional wrestling,
the two athletes in the ring,

they're working together.

And I loved working with
Jake, because it was so easy.

- Jake, to me, is one
of the greatest talents

I've ever seen.

In the ring, he sure
as hell could tell

probably the best story.

- I'd say the DDT
and his promo work,

and his ring psychology

would be the three things
that will always stand out

when people talk
about Jake Roberts.

- He grew up on wrestling,
he understands wrestling

and understands the psychology

in wrestling in
front of a crowd.

- You know, if you're
really good at what you do,

then the more believable you
could make that character,

and the more you
could draw them in

to where they're, you know,

sittin' on the
edge of their seat.

And Jake had that ability.

- Jake Roberts is the guy
who made me wanna watch

professional wrestling because
you didn't know with Jake.

You didn't know what was
real and what was fake.

You just didn't know.

- You know, when the
cobra bit Macho's arm.

(crowd cheers)

- [Voiceover] And the snake
has glommed on the arm!

And Randy Savage is helpless!

- The Snake was so
unusual and so feared

that it became part
of his persona.

- Jake's the kinda guy

who has that creative mind

that came through
very naturally.

- A long time ago I
learned one thing:

that if a man has enough power,

he can speak softly and
everyone will listen.

- He'd whisper and man,
there was somethin' different

about a guy who
didn't yell at you

like everybody else did.

- People get drawn into it

and they're paying attention
more than they would

than if you're
yelling and screaming,

A Snake, he has six.

- And he was one of the first
people whose promos I saw

and he scared me.

You know, he creeped me out.

- He casts a spell on you.

It's almost like you
get caught in his web.

- There are very few guys

that actually made me fear.

- I will hook that DDT.

And I'll crack your skull.

- Jake developed that
move, came up with it,

gave it the name.

- If you saw him hook
that front face lock,

it was like, OK, it's o--

Nobody kicks out of it.

- And that's the grace of
any great finishing maneuver.

You can strike
suddenly and quickly

and you just don't even bother.

- When the time comes,
I will hook the head

and I will drive
him through the mat.

I will put the final
nail in your own coffin!

- Especially the
deal with Steamboat.

I just remember that
DDT on the floor

and hearing the smack.

And just thinking, like,

"Oh, Steamboat might be dead."

- So there was always an
era of mystery with Jake.

- Well let me tell
you something.

It's more shameful to deny fear

than it is to run from danger.

- When it comes time for me to

name a few of my
favorite Pro Wrestlers,

Jake is always on my list.

- If you're a
student of wrestling,

and you don't watch
Jake Roberts' matches

and his interviews,

then you're missin' out
on one of the best ever.

- I think he was an influence
on this entire generation.

You gotta be able to speak.

He's got it.

You gotta be able to
work, he's got it.

- He had intensity.

He had everything
that you needed

to be one of the great minds
in the history of the business,

and was a huge
influence on my work.

- I don't care how much
bigger their opponent is,

whoever their opponent is,

is in danger.

And that's such an
amazing talent to have.

As a performer,
have that audience

doubting.

- As we have
established, all of us,

- I remember laying on our floor

in Gainesville, in Texas

and watching wrestling on
Sunday morning with our uncle.

And that's kinda how we learned
about who our father is.

That was really the
only time we had.

- My brothers are five
years younger than me

and they're twins.

And nobody asked me to,

but I felt like it was my
job as an older sister,

so I protected them.

- Jake, kind of had two careers.

One was this great
piece of talent,

who could communicate.

And then he had
that other career

that most people
don't want to talk to,

but he went through hell.

- In the last three
or four years,

I didn't think I was
gonna have a dad around.

- It's scary to think, you know,

what Jake coulda done

had he been totally
straight his whole career.

- He's one of the best,
but he's got a lotta issues

that stop him from doing more.

- When the entire world
knows you as one character

for such a long time,

I think it's easy to
become that character.

- [Voiceover] The crowd
doesn't know who you really are

and then you leave that arena

and you have to
go back to a hotel

and it's like
you're all wired up

and now we gotta shut it off.

- You just wrestled in front
of 50,000 people, so, phew!

- Us as addicts, we can...

Our minds tend to

wander a little bit looking
for something to do,

which cannot, you know,
it's not a good thing.

- Back in the day, when they
really traveled like they did,

nonstop, and the way
that Jake was livin',

obviously hard and fast,

combined with that
wrestling career.

You know, I know that
guy feels like...

garbage.

- Your wife's not there,
your kids aren't there,

and so how do you
fill this void?

And...

- The thumbs start
to twiddle and--

- All's you see is the negative

and the dark, deep,
places of death.

- Every time I tried to
talk to him about it,

you know, he'd just kinda,
"Ah, I know what I'm doin'.

"I know what I'm doin'."

And I'd say, "Jake, you
don't know what you're doin'.

"It's got you."

- Suddenly, the reputation,
the desire of this great pro

is diminished down to nothing.

- And you see these
people droppin' like flies

just dyin' and dyin'
and you're like,

"God, please don't take Jake
from this earth," you know?

"Not another one."

- Hell, I wanna see Jake
live to be an old man.

In our business, sometimes
that doesn't always happen.

You get a lot of guys
meeting their demise

and leaving this
world way too soon.

(gentle piano music)

- We told the promoter,
"Listen, dude.

"Do not put him out there.

"He is in no shape
to perform tonight."

- Excuse me.

(crowd shouting)

Shut the hell up.

- There were 22 of those
airplane vodka bottles.

22 of 'em around
where he was sitting,

on top of everything else.

- (grunts) You're not...

givin' me the same respect, man.

- You know, J.T. takes
Jake over to the corner.

And he hits him and Jake
doesn't register it.

Two seconds later he
falls flat on his face.

(crowd yelling)

(hand thumping against mat)

- Do you think they booked
Jake "The Snake" Roberts

to lose in 30 seconds?

Like, I mean, no.

(crowd chatter)

Promoter's looking
through the curtain

and, "What the hell
just happened?"

And he goes,

"Go, go do something.
Somebody do something."

And I'm like, "What
do you want me to do?"

And he's like, "Go take a DDT
and get him out of there."

So, I'm nailing him, and
if you look at the tape,

the stuff looks fake,

because I'm talking to him,

"Jake, come on.
Just give me a DDT.

"That's it, and this
whole thing is fixed."

And he is not working.

If he would have
given me the DDT,

I'm telling you TMZ would
have never had nothin'.

The people would have
left before it got stupid.

But the whole reason that I
got to the level that I got,

he's standing in the ring,

exposin' himself.

(indistinct yelling)

So while part of you
does what everybody does.

They go, "Well, I feel
sorry and I hope that

"he gets the help
that he needs."

But then the other part of you,

especially if
you're a part of it,

you go, "Eh, the
hell with that."

- When there's an
accident on the road,

I don't stop.

I don't like watching
stuff like that

and I think it bothered me,

the fact that people
would rather film it

than try and help.

to make these people happy,

'cause you couldn't
perform a lick.

That's the real name of
Jake "The Snake" Roberts.

Recently, been talking
to Jake quite a bit.

Known him for quite
a number of years.

He was one of my two mentors.

Dusty Rhodes and Jake
"The Snake" Roberts.

I was very fortunate
to have those two

mentor me.

Jake believed in me when

really very, very, very
few people believed in me.

Jake was the one who
gave me the knowledge

and I was nobody at the time.

- Dallas, came into the
wrestling business very late.

- At age 35, become a
wrestler for the first time?

- You wanna talk work
ethic, DDP has it.

If he can do somethin',

he's gonna do it to the
utmost of his ability.

There's no room for second best.

- Diamond Dallas
Page got his start

in professional wrestling.

Now he's created
a fitness system

that some people are
calling life changing.

- I knew how close
Page was with Jake,

or how much he respected him.

He was always talking
about Jake Roberts.

Two, I knew how down
and out Jake was.

He had nowhere left to go.

- Us as addicts and alcoholics,

we like to do things our way.

And that doesn't work sometimes.

You got to, I had to give
the reins to somebody else

and let them drive,
and that's OK.

- There's obviously
some skepticism.

You know, I think
there has to be.

Only because addiction's
an ugly beast.

- It's not a drug
rehabilitation center.

- But I truly thought if
there's someone's positivity

that can ram through that,

is gonna be Dallas.

- Jake has hit on some
really hard times.

His body's really beat up.

He's got a new hip.

His neck's messed up.

Havin' problems
with concussions,

all sorts of shit.

Bottom line is,

before anyone can
actually help you,

like, you gotta be
ready to help yourself.

Me and my buddy Steve are here

and we're coming down
here to film this.

- He wanted to help Jake

and he wanted to actually
get Jake to do his program.

I thought it was really
a perfect opportunity

to possibly document the
whole process of doing that.

- And he has a lot to
give if he could just

finally kick out,
get himself straight.

- There you are.

You're on that side
of the road, though.

- I guess when we were
going to Jake's house,

I expected this
really nice house,

because, you know, Jake was
this huge wrestling superstar.

- You guys want
something to drink?

A coffee or, not coffee, but

water, Gatorade, urine?

(laughter)

Yeah, a little over a year
ago, I retired officially.

The only passion I
had was wrestling.

Had to give it up.

I had a life, but I poisoned it.

Self-destructive son of a bitch.

My father wrestled.

I was never around him.

Well, he didn't show
up for my graduation,

and he never went to a
ballgame I did, or nothing.

Went to see him and,

"Hey Dad, I graduated
high school.

"I want to go to college."

My dad looked down
at me, he said,

"You're gutless.

"I'm ashamed of you, and you'll
never amount to anything."

And I got angry, man.

I got so fucking mad.

I was insane mad.

I always swore up and
down that, you know,

when I grow up I'll
never do that shit.

- [Voiceover] Then
why did you do it?

- I wanted to shove
it up his ass.

Came up with this idea,

if you want your father
to be proud of you,

you do what he's
doing and show him up.

Just to get him, man.

And I've never...

truly forgiven him

for what he'd done
to me as a child.

- [Voiceover] You
mean your abuse?

- [Voiceover] (whispers) Yeah.

- [Voiceover] By your dad?

- My stepmother.

My dad would go on the
road and terrify me.

Being afraid to go to sleep.

'Cause you know somebody
used to come down

that fuckin' hall
to wake your ass up,

and take you in their room,

and make you perform.

And then afterwards you're
gonna get a hairbrush,

couple of clothes
hangers, beat your ass.

And tell you that if your
father finds out he'll kill you.

Or he'll hate you.

And you don't say a word.

All these things that
happened to me as a kid...

they make you who you are.

(dramatic, minimal music)

Screwed the fans,

screwed myself of my memories.

I was giving up a life.

- I always wanted to repay him.

I wanted him to believe
in himself again.

Now come up on your knees.

I wanna show you something.

(grunts) Ah, ah.

- And I know all of my pain
is because I'm inactive.

I'm not doing anything, I'm
300 fuckin' pounds, man.

or two away from

not being able to walk.

- And that's what
really opened the door

for me to wanna try.

Like, never believed he
was in that bad of shape.

you feel like you fight it,

fight the addiction?

- It was our assumption
that Jake was clean.

He wasn't using drugs and
he wasn't drinking alcohol.

So, it was our primary focus
to help Jake get into shape.

- 288. Hey! 12 pounds.

- I really wanted to help Jake,

but I wasn't gonna do it

until I was absolutely certain

that I knew he was actually
gonna put the work in.

- I knew this is my last
fucking shot in life.

- We knew that environment
plays a huge factor

in someone changing their life.

- I'm thinking to myself,

same shit he said to
me years and years ago.

You keep doin'
what you're doin',

well, this could really
turn into somethin'.

- [Voiceover] What was the
last time we weighed you at?

It was 288, right?

- 288, yeah.

Aha, I like that.

(whispers) 278.

So the idea was really
to propose to Jake

that we bring him to Atlanta.

Dallas had some
hesitation because

he knew that Jake
could be a handful.

- First of all, I hadn't
lived with another guy,

you know, for 20 years.

Positive side was,

there was somethin' inside him

that really made
him want to change.

- [Voiceover] Are
you ready for this?

- Yeah, I'm ready as
I'm gonna be. (laughs)

- [Voiceover] They're fucking--

- [Voiceover] That's

- [Voiceover] Right here?

- [Voiceover] Comin' up.

a bit clean shaven.

got the cigarette,

But there were no dreams,
there was no happy.

Because there is no happy, man,

when you become addicted,
you're overweight,

your life is lost,
you feel like death.

And what I have to live by is:

my history is not fucking
gonna be my destiny.

Maybe I should leave

rallying around him

to make sure he succeeds.

So, you know, how could you
not be excited about that?

it's just best if everybody

just tries to help
with everything.

The next thing is
drugs and booze.

- Good, I'll be
in charge of that.

- I guess, it's probably
not a secret that, you know,

we're trying to make
sure that Jake stays good

on his past problems.

So, that's, the thing
is with everybody,

is we're all gonna
not necessarily just

follow Jake around and
watch what he does,

but we're just gonna try to

make sure that he
stays on track.

- And I'd like to
throw out there, too.

If this guy's gone,

and you guys see me
actin' a little goofy.

able to sustain it without

a lot of support
and encouragement.

and expect a lot,

but you also know that he cares.

When the cravings hit

If you have that first

you think you're fairly tough

and that you're

But I've also got a disease.

- When we first got
together, it was,

"I could drink three
beers, that's all I need."

- I don't wanna drink
anymore at all, period.

A million drinks lined
up is not enough.

But, one drink is
too fuckin' many.

time in our lives

that we've talked
to him frequently,

and he was focused.

he's eatin' the right way,

of impingement syndrome,

where you raise your arm up
and your rotator cuff gets

has no insurance.

He didn't have any money
to pay for the surgery,

so we had to come up with
some kind of solution.

- I just got the
numbers from the doc.

Actually, they're pretty good.

Bottom line is, it'll
be around eight grand.

- So we decided to
try crowdfunding.

So we put up a page on Indiegogo

to try to raise the
money for his surgery.

- And the fans got to
get a piece of Jake.

Whether it was a photograph,
autograph, you know,

Skype call, a T-shirt,
whatever it was.

That night, we put it up,

and we'd never done
anything like this before.

We haven't checked it out
or anything, so we wanna

check to see where we're at,

and then we'll talk about where
we're gonna go from there.

- Cool. Well, I'm excited.

- So we had Jake's
daughter, Brandy.

She's visiting him, which was
huge for him at that time.

(gasping)

- Un fuckin' real.

- $7,000 out of $9,200.

- [Voiceover] But the really
cool thing that came out of that

was Jake got to see how
much the fans really cared.

And that really
sorta took him back,

and gave another level
of the foundation.

Building that structure
underneath him

that's, right now,
has been pivotal.

- All those years, I guess
they did mean somethin'.

knocked me to my knees.

I'm humbled.

I'm so grateful.

I never thought I
was good enough.

Had a lot of issues I've
dealt with over the years,

and some that I still
have to deal with daily.

It was always about doubt.

Doubting myself,
doubting my ability,

doubting my talent,

doubting love.

There's one thing that
I cannot doubt anymore,

and that's the love

that you have given me.

When we started to see
the amazing progress

that Jake was gettin',

we started to get, you know,

get it out there
on the internet.

People honed right in.

Scott Hall started
as Diamond Studd,

and it helped create that whole,

what would become
Razor Ramon persona.

When you're medicated on so
many pills and so much booze

that you can't
feel it, you know,

I watched him limp.

He was limping comin'
in, and a real slow walk,

and limping with his
leg turned out, and...

You know I'm not gonna sell it,

'cause I don't
wanna say anything,

he's trying to hide it.

One of the things he
blamed his addiction,

his alcoholism, his
pills, all of that,

was on his pain.

- I'm over 30 somethin'
days now clean,

and this is the longest
I've ever had in my life,

you know, in the real world.

You know, I've had
longer periods of time,

but it's always been in
some kind of facility.

(sighs)

'Cause it's gettin' real.

Like, change is
really scary for me.

Even though I know it's
gonna be somethin' positive.

- His heart.

I mean his inside
heart, his drive,

his motivation, his inspiration,

I can see that.

- No matter how horrible
my life was in the past,

I always had my body
to fall back on.

I always had my body,
always had my physique,

and you know, I had this
heart procedure in 2010,

where they implanted a
pacemaker and a defibrillator,

and I was really, really sick.

You know, I can't lift anymore,

and whenever things would be
stressful and all this stuff

was comin' down on me, I
could always go to the gym.

I always had my body
as a place to retreat.

When I look in the mirror,
you know, I'm goin',

"Oh, okay."

But boy, when I see it on film,

I'm reminded that I
got a long way to go.

I've had a few brief workouts,
but I got a few hiccups,

you know, a few dings.

Old injuries are
rearin' their heads,

and try to have, figure
out how to deal with them.

- Now reach out
and grab that pull,

there, didn't you?

Had I not been in this setting,
I woulda just blew it off

this road to physical rehab,

you know, to be able to get
back into shape again, and--

heart and the hip, I've been...

you know, I had a tough hill
to climb last few years.

So this, I feel like I,
everything is fallin' in place

for the right reason.

I just feel so thankful to
everybody who helped me.

three of my eight.

hurt them anymore.

while he was drinking

He may have been drinkin'.

And it all came
back the same thing.

They did 90 meetings in 90 days.

- The thought behind that is

getting around those
people in those meetings

every day,

so you're never that
far removed from it.

Instilling that into
his brain before,

he wouldn't think that way, man.

He just didn't.

my life that I don't wanna be

a prisoner to

from years of inactivity,

Eventually, we'll be

got here, I weighed 310,

now I weigh 258.

Stayed here with Jake
and Dallie for months,

and now I live two blocks away,

down the street
with my son Cody.

And we're gettin' super
tight, and our goal was to get

his wrestling career on track,

get to hang out together,

so we're gettin' all
those things accomplished.

We train, we're livin' like
a couple of pro wrestlers.

I wanna be right where I am.

I feel like I'm right exactly
where I'm supposed to be.

But I wanna stay connected
to the crib here.

A lot of good things
happened here for me

in my life, recently,

and I don't want to stray
too far from that support.

I spent too much time looking
in the rearview mirror,

and I need, I found
that I need to be

focusing on the windshield.

That's why the, you know,
rearview's so much smaller.

- Jake was like, "You know,

"it's time for me to move
on down the line, too."

And I was like, "I'm not
kickin' you out, bro."

(laughs) He's like, "No, I'm
not takin' it like that."

He was like, "I
think it's time."

And he said, "I'm gonna
move in with Kyle,

"and we're still
just down the road."

- I met Jake at the gym.

I look over, and there's
Jake "The Snake" Roberts".

I told him I was proud of his
recovery, and I was a big fan,

and the next thing you
know, we became friends.

And he invited me
over to Dallas' house,

and I've been around
for a while now,

and I've been treated like and
feel like I'm part of the team,

I'm part of the family.

Jake was plannin' on movin' out.

The place he was looking to
move was like an hour away.

I said, "Jake, why don't
you live with me instead?

"You'll be close to the
house, we work together almost

on a daily basis anyway,
it'd be more convenient.

"And I think it'd be a
better situation for you."

And he agreed.

of the ponytail!

The workouts, I mean,
you just killed the last

couple workouts that
we've had, and I couldn't,

I couldn't feel any better

makin' that choice
to do your thing,

because I think

- I mean, when you go from doin'
drugs and alcohol every day

to zero.

I struggled with it,
you know, afraid that...

I could wind up
in the same health

as I was before I came.

And I never, ever
wanna go back to that.

- Jake and I have talked
about what we can do to,

now that he's clean and sober,

and we have a bunch of
ideas in the making.

Well, the first thing,
if not the main thing,

is to start a live
radio show podcast.

this is the addiction, not Jake.

therapist tells me.

Hate the addiction,

when he's not an addict.

He's a pretty loving, good guy.

gonna make us feel bad

for questioning him.

have to be like,

the addiction.

time I'd go away,

Jake would fall down.

And it really became a
reminder, not just to me,

but to Jake,

that this, having the addiction,

is gonna be a lifelong battle.

completely differently
than we've ever

done anything, talkin' to Jake.

This is probably more
serious, but to me,

I want it to be the most
laid-back ever, dude.

- This whole group of
people that surrounded him

was not about punishing him.

That wasn't our goal.

Our goal was to try to
figure out what we could do

to prevent him from
relapsing again.

Once I think Jake started
to understand that,

he made a lotta progress.

- And maybe it's from not
goin' to the meetings and shit,

but I'll be startin' to
feel funny, you know.

Been over a year.

- You did reach out to me.

You did reach out.

And I got the text, you said,

"Dude. I'm goin' to
see my shrink again."

And I said, "Do you need me?"

I remember that
day, when I said,

"Dude, where you at?"

And then I never
heard from you again.

- (whispers) I know, I know.

- So I did feel you
reach out to me.

- I was so fuckin' miserable.

I was fuckin' goin'
crazy inside my head.

I didn't know which way
was up, which way was down,

who my friends were,
who they weren't,

and I knew better.

- I know we're never gonna
take you down that path.

- [Jake] I know.

- You know what I mean?

So, if you put yourself in
that, in that environment,

it's a slippery world.

- [Voiceover] I did. I
put myself right into it.

I fell right into what
she wanted me to fall for.

- Dude, I want, I want to
see this all the way through.

I've never quit on
anything in my life.

And I don't want to quit on you.

You quit on you, that's
a whole different end.

You know, you've done
the right direction.

No matter what, you
can't take that away,

what you've done, what
you've accomplished,

what's happened over
this last fuckin' year,

and you can't take that away.

- I always promised myself that

man, when I grow up, and,

I'm gonna love my kids, I'm
gonna take care of my wife,

I'm gonna, I'm gonna
treat 'em good, man.

And I'll always
be there for 'em.

I'll go to every football

and I never seen shit.

And I hate what I did, but
I can't change what I did.

And what I'm doing today
is respecting my family,

myself, and others.

he had no one to call.

own thing for so long,

didn't believe him.

accountability people

You know, one of the biggest
names in our business

who's also the active
Executive Vice President

of WWE Talent.

And he asked me if I wanted to
be a part of Old School Raw.

- Old School Raw is when
they bring back a bunch of

wrestling legends.

Guys like "Superfly"
Jimmy Snuka,

Sergeant Slaughter.

And this year, they
invited back Dallas.

It's pretty awesome.

You know, the whole
crew came together,

and we all watched
it here at the house.

- [Voiceover] Booker T!
(laughs) What's up, bro?

- (laughs) DDP, what's up baby?

How you been, long time no see!

- Just doin' a little DDP yoga.

- Oh, that's good.

- That's core strength,
- That's pretty good.

- and flexibility and (mumbles).

means a lot to the boys

to feel that they are
still a part of the family.

there most of the day

and he looks at me, and he says,

He said, "It'll be worth it."

And I just didn't get
it. (snaps fingers)

- We're all hangin'
out and laughin',

then it's the last
segment on Raw

where it's The Shield in
the ring with CM Punk.

They're in the ring and The
Shield's about to do something,

then all of a sudden
like, music hits.

And they turn around.

(dramatic music)

And then in my head, I'm like,

that sounds like Jake's music.

But maybe it's, maybe it's
just me thinking that.

(crowd cheers)

- [Voiceover] You gotta,
you gotta be kiddin' me!

You gotta, look,
you're kidding me!

- And I was like, "Oh.
Jake isn't showing up.

And I couldn't handle
what I was looking at.

I was just so excited, I
just get covered in chills.

- What a lot of people
don't understand is,

Jake had really
been excommunicated,

or sorta like banned

from, you know,
everything with the WWE.

So for him to get the call back,

it meant so much to him.

- They came and got me and
took me to gorilla position.

That's the first thing,
that's for the first time,

in so many years.

And he extended his hand,

and it was an awesome moment.

I'm just shakin' his hand
and lookin' him in the eyes.

To hear them say, "It's
good to have you home.

"Good to have you back."

As he drew them open.

I went through that curtain,
man, hearing that music.

I quit breathing. (huffs)

I shoulda had the pads
there to bring me back.

'Cause my chest just
seemed to fill with air,

I thought I was gonna burst.

But the moment that
got me the most

is when I put my
hands on the ring.

Oh.

It is like (exhales deeply).

Punk and the other guys

get out of the way,

and then CM Punk, you know,
squatting down into the ropes

to allow me that
panoramic, full view,

that I had missed it,

'cause if I'd have known,

if he'd have told me,
I would have stayed.

I woulda watched it, you know,

and I'd have been
jumpin' up and down

for Jake when he came
back in the crew.

- It was so emotional because

felt like I was walkin'
down that aisle with him,

which was, was just a
crazy feelin' to have.

- The fact that he was on Raw
meant so much for that goal.

Especially him wanting to
be in the Royal Rumble.

Really phenomenal moment.

A true triumph of
the human spirit,

it was just a really cool
thing to be a part of.

pound drug addict,

and finishes up 18 months later

as a 245 pound
WWE Hall of Famer.

Pretty good story.

- I've always loved

professional wrestling.

I shoulda shared
the time more wisely

because I don't regret
loving wrestling.

Because there's nothing
on this planet like it.

I was given an innate amount of
talent by God a long time ago.

You guys got a little of it.

I'm ashamed that I
wasted a lot of it.

- Sure makes me feel good that
there is people in the world

that know how to get people
out of the low slump areas

of their lives,
and back up on top.

- But for some reason, one
person sticks a hand out.

And that person, for me,
was Diamond Dallas Page.

(crowd cheers)

It woke me up.

me somebody does care.

I'm so happy

because I've got some
special people here

called family.

They gave me a second chance.

- I just feel a little
bit safer in a ring.

I never had any
problems in here.

But it was when I stepped
outside these ropes.

I just got over the
whole pride thing,

it's one of the seven deadlies.

I've just started, you know,
I'm not afraid to ask for help

or ask somebody--

Like, I don't need
people to watch my back,

I need them to watch my front,

- Alcoholism has no friends.

It wants to kill you,
wants to kill him,

wants to kill anybody
it's involved with.

That's what it's all about.

- So the bottom line
is, you ain't cured.

- Never be cured.

- But you can fight it.

It's makin' that
conscious decision

to keep your eye on
the prize, for me.

- Again, it always
comes back to the story

we tell ourselves, man.

- It ain't over.
- Right.

- You know, it's like,
for all of us, you know?

It's a journey we're all on.

- It's what you tell
yourself, exactly.

- And it's all, we're
all interconnected.

(laughs) And we're gonna be
like three grumpy old men.

- Which we're not too

you learned the most, bro?

I feel pretty damn
good about that.
