that I would really

why aren't we

We came looking for
the footprints of Adolf Hitler

and his escape through Spain.

Is that a swastika
carved down there?

And I think
we pretty much found them.

Adolf Hitler's whereabouts

months and years
after he was believed dead.

The investigative team

a massive evacuation

of Nazi planes left from
Berlin's Tempelhof airport.

A review
of the flight records revealed

that one of the flights
carried the Fuhrer's

personal belongings.

And that's a whole week

before the Russians
take Tempelhof.

The timeline fits,

but the question is, could he
have made it to the airport?

Lenny's found a route
that goes from Hitler's bunker,

close to the airport.

could have
used subway tunnels

to travel safely underground
from the Fuhrerbunker

to within 300 yards
of Tempelhof.

The discovery of a walled-off
passage under the airport...

That's big enough
for somebody to crawl through.

within 50 yards of the subway.

If the team can prove
the two tunnels connect,

it could be
a major breakthrough

in the investigation.

There are documented reports
that say a tunnel

was built for the purposes
of supporting Hitler's escape

and if we could find
an additional tunnel,

it's very feasible

that Hitler could have gotten
out of Germany.

You still need to close
the last 50 yards

of this choke point
to find that tunnel.

The best thing to do is to get
some ground penetrating radar,

and see if the subway's tunnels
align with the tunnel

where he's come
to the dead-end.

to find any sort
of object in the ground.

it can find something as fine

Assuming that it's going

8 feet underground.

to see if it continues.

Yup, it's still there,
same pattern.

He kept getting
consistent hits.

Yup, there it is again.

That line was so accurate,

it just kept going and going
and going.

That's exactly the direction
to the subway station.

We are in the game.

So from the scans,
you have a tunnel.

It's roughly
about 8 to 10 feet down

and about four feet wide

so it matches exactly
what you would expect

from a tunnel.

Better proof
you can't really have.

There's the exit from
the subway, but if you

remember when we walked off
the train, the tunnel,

it runs this way, correct?
- Yeah.

So looks like it's
a straight shot

into the side
of the tunnels somewhere.

They may have done an opening
in the side of the tube.

Joerg, here's my question.
- Yeah.

Subway probably runs maybe
another fifteen feet that way.

- Uh-huh
- I'd love to connect

the dots underground.

With a little bit of luck,
maybe we can find a hole.

If this tunnel connects

directly to the subway,

it will prove
an underground escape by Hitler

would have
been completely feasible.

so we were right about here,

It's very hard to believe.

We just now put the last piece
of the puzzle together,

we connected Tempelhof airport
to the Fuhrerbunker.

If he wanted to choose
this route to get out

of Dodge in a hurry,

ample opportunity,
it's a direct shot.

we've got a tunnel here,

takes me right to the airport.

Here's Adolf Hitler
that supposedly

took off seventy years ago,

but right now I feel
like I'm right behind him.

surrendered
after Germany's defeat

46 U-boats went missing
and operated in secret.

reports of U-boats

being sighted there,
post World War II.

an Argentine naval document

that reports
that an unknown German sub

surfaced
near Caleta de los Loros

months after the war was over.

The team also found
a fresh water, man-made well.

This makes no sense
to be here,

this is unbelievable.

This is a tremendous find.

Hitler,
or any other Nazi,

coming into Argentina
on a U-boat,

is going to need supplies,

is going to need fresh water,

and then there was also
a witness, a woman who,

in 1945,
saw this U-boat surface.

She claims
that she saw a submarine

once they
disembarked the people,

they had nowhere
to go back to.

The war was lost.

So it was scuttled.

narrator: During World War II,
scuttling,

or the intentional sinking
of U-boats

to avoid secrets
falling into allied hands,

was a common Nazi practice.

It is estimated
that over 200 Nazi U-boats

were scuttled during the war.

If Paesani's
eyewitness testimony is true,

and the U-boat
she allegedly saw

was carrying out
a secret mission,

that boat is now likely
on the bottom of the ocean.

I mean, the point
is there's a lot of noise

around this location.

In a 70-year-old case,

there aren't a lot
of eyewitnesses.

So in order for Caleta
to have been credible,

we need to determine
whether or not this woman

would have had a field of vision
relative to this U-boat.

We need to take this
out of the realm of, you know,

hearsay and myth.

the eyewitness report.

into the area

where the sub was sighted.
See what's credible.

See whether or not somebody
could've seen a sub

the diver on a 1997
Argentinean naval expedition

to locate the suspected
scuttled U-boat in this area.

What was the distance

that the woman said
she saw the sub at?

And then she sees
the submarine

over in the distance.

As an investigator,

eyewitness testimony
is not always accurate.

We want to see for ourselves.

We want to visit the scene
of the crime, so to speak.

- All right, have fun.

If that looks believable,

we find an indication that
in fact subs were landing here,

and it's time to prepare,
to look for the sub

that was scuttled.

eyewitness is no longer alive,

the team
will verify her testimony.

heading out to the area

that the U-boat
was supposed to be in...

and I'm going to go
from her vantage point

and see if she's lying.

The vessel that we're on now
is 21 feet, 7 meters long.

That makes us almost exactly
one-tenth the size

of the types of U-boats that
we know traveled in this area.

If Tim can see us
that would tend to confirm

that it was at least feasible.

to the property,

Tim goes
to the precise position

where she claimed
to have seen the U-boat.

Yeah, five by five,
you ready?

All right, let's go.

narrator: Because Steve's boat
is ten times smaller

than a U-boat, Tim uses
the magnification

of a camera lens
to level the playing field.

She has a perfect view
of this entire bay.

Possible to see something,
but nothing.

how did that look to you?

Oh yeah.

Definitely got you guys now.

You can actually see us?

I still have eyes
on you guys.

that's pretty conclusive.

You guys are just
a 20-foot inflatable,

there's a really good chance
we could see a 220-foot boat.

I cannot believe
I can see this.

It's suddenly feasible

that a sub could've come
to this area.

Now it's time to get proof,

we need 2015 tech,

we need to bring in experts,

and frankly,
if there's something here,

we are absolutely
gonna find it.

If that U-boat was sunk
by the Argentinean navy,

or if the Nazis
scuttled it, either way,

there should be something there
on the bottom of the ocean.

a German U-boat off an area

called "Caleta de los Loros."

In 1997 the Argentinean Navy
went down there

and they couldn't find anything,
which brings us to you.

Yeah, so, the basis
of the technology is similar,

but it's really the back end,

the post processing
that has gotten a lot better

with the ever-increasing power
of computers.

If there's something
in the survey area,

if there's a U-boat there,
we will definitely find it.

The problem we're gonna have
is we're gonna have

to narrow it down very
quickly because the bad weather.

Right, it's about to be
winter down there isn't it?

You simply can't be cruising

up and down
that shore in storms.

The faster we do it,
the better.

is down there,

it will be a treasure trove
of evidence.

We could be
onto the very escape vehicle

that was used by Adolf Hitler.

that idea of Hitler
using the airport

to escape to me

"What was his plan

once he got

So they manufacture 'em
right here,

they put them together
right here and roll them out?

So Hitler would have a lot
at his disposal.

the Focke-Wulf Condor 200

was used by the Axis powers
for long-range reconnaissance

and bombing runs.

Hitler's custom-built Condor

was equipped
with extra large fuel tanks,

armor-plated seats,
and an automatic parachute.

Hitler kept
those planes here?

Yeah.

If an aircraft decided
to take off from here

loaded down
with the right people,

you can get out of here
in a hurry.

If he did take a Condor
out of Berlin,

I can tell you one thing,
he's not getting to Argentina.

I mean it's out of range.
Too far.

There are no places to stop.

So, uh, you look east, of course
he didn't go to Russia,

Red Army is all the way
up to Berlin,

it's just impossible.

He didn't go north

into the Scandinavian countries,
he didn't go to Britain.

In Africa,
got the American army there.

If you look
at the political map

with a range of 2,200 miles
Spain is the only alternative.

We have FBI document

and it states here,
"The United States Army

is spending most of its efforts
to locate Hitler in Spain."

I mean,
that's extraordinary,

we think that Hitler
lived and got to Spain.

It's not we've heard rumors
that he's here,

it says they were out and out
looking for him.

This is another document,

from the O.S.S.,
it says,

"Hitler refused
to involve Spain in the war

because he has a promise
of sanctuary there

when Germany is defeated."

There is one man that Hitler
could go to for salvation.

It's Franco.

Generalissimo Francisco Franco

was a dictator
and fascist leader,

who ruled Spain from 1939
until his death in 1975.

Franco seized power
in a military coup,

sparking a bloody civil war.

His forces crushed
the opposition with help

from bombers and ground troops
sent from Hitler's Germany.

without Germany's help.

I mean Hitler, in a sense,
created Franco.

In any investigation,

known associates
are very important.

We have a dictator
who has the money,

and the power to assist somebody
like Adolf Hitler

and they also have a debt
of gratitude.

Spain's a big country.
Where does he go?

Um, Franco had
his summer retreat in Galicia.

Yeah, I mean I think
his residence,

it's one of
the better possibilities.

If Franco had agreed
to protect Hitler,

he would want
to put him someplace

where he could trust the guards
and trust people to be quiet.

Someplace that he knew
was out of the public eye.

I think that's the most
likely place to look.

that surrounds
the entire perimeter.

You got houses that I'm sure
armed guards were in.

You know you take this route

It's a perfect spot
to land a plane.

It's a fortress,
it was well protected

I'm sure there was plenty
of eyes and ears around here

when Franco was here.

Any aircraft could have
landed anywhere in that area,

but I'm trying to prove
that Adolf Hitler was here.

So, I want to get
inside this compound

and find some factual evidence
that proves it.

what's beyond those walls.

Behind those walls, there'll
be many, many, many secrets.

There's a story here
from May 1945.

Franco's driver allegedly said

a German gardener appeared
called Addy Lupus.

Addy is the name
that Eva Braun used for Adolf,

and Hitler loved
being called Mr. Wolf

and Lupus
is Latin for wolf.

So Addy Lupus.

I haven't been able to find
a single piece of evidence

that leads me to think
that any part

of this story is true,but--

Could be behind those walls.

In my career in looking
for violent felony fugitives,

I mean I've tracked down
plenty of people on rumors.

Even if the entire rumor
is not exactly the truth,

there's bits and pieces
of what's said in that rumor

that can lead you
to a direct hit

on a fugitive that's been
running for many years.

There's another entrance

to find a U-boat out there,

it's going to be this team.

of this potential sunken U-boat

to a 2-mile search area.

they should be able to complete

you will come across something

and that something
will change

your whole approach
to the story.

from the civil war, uh--

a major German community here.

aren't too well-liked

I mean maybe they just bulldozed
them over and they buried them.

This is like a whole

I can see, like,
an existing wall

that was pretty much new,

20-30 years old...
What is that?

And then behind it
was another wall

and it looked pretty old.

and especially with a case
like this that's 70 years old,

so you've gotta look
in every corner

It's a bit weird,
a bit strange.

Here behind a wall,

in a quite graveyard
in a little town in Spain,

it looks like there is actually
physical remains

in this cemetery
of German soldiers.

- It'd be interesting.
- Yeah, very.

Hold on there might be dates
or something here,

No way.

Is that a swastika
carved on that?

You gotta be kidding me.

You've got the swastika,

and you've got in German,
"Here rests German Soldiers."

I mean this whole idea

of a cemetery there
tells the whole story.

narrator: Bob and John have
uncovered a photo that supports

the field teams' findings
of a cemetery with Nazi ties

in Spain, a neutral country
during World War II.

I mean could you imagine this
in another part of the world?

A country allowed
supposed enemy soldiers

to be buried there?
I think it's pretty amazing.

The fact that German soldiers,
Nazi soldiers,

were buried in Galicia
tells us

even though Spain
remained neutral,

it was still pro-Nazi.

narrator: Despite confirming
Nazi activity, Bob and John

have yet
to find direct evidence

Hitler was in Spain.

They turn to a new
investigative approach.

If Hitler
had escaped from Germany

we need to narrow the focus
of where he may have gone.

In the investigative world
there is an adage

that the money
doesn't lie, people can,

but the money really is going
to tell us the truth.

In this case Adolf Hitler
had enormous wealth,

so for him to get
out of the country

and to be supported,
the money had to go somewhere.

The Office
of Strategic Services

was following German money
and going to

different parts

why submarines
