on a positive note.

As my wife always reminds me,

I depress everybody so much

that we got to pass out
the tranquilizers at the end,

but here's the point.

If we were sitting
in this room 30 years ago

and somebody were to say,
"You know,

"I think in the year 2008
the United States of America,

"it's gonna elect
an African-American president

of the United States,"

people would have said,
"You're crazy.

That ain't never gonna happen,
not in our lifetime."

It happened.

It happened when people
all over this country,

African-Americans
and white allies,

stood up, occasionally died,

often went to jail fighting
against segregation, racism,

unfair voting laws.

It happened because
people had the courage

to stand up and fight.

25 years ago or so,

you know how many women
senators we had?

Two.

Today there are 20,
and no one denies

that in the coming years
half of the Congress

will be women or more.

Still a long way to go to
overcome sexism, absolutely,

but profound changes
in this country happened

because women by the millions
said, "Enough is enough!"

Ten years ago if somebody
said, "Well, you know,

"I think that in conservative
states in America,

these states will have
gay marriage,"

people would have said,
"You are really crazy,"

but that is exactly
what's happening.

Real change never happens
without struggle.

I mean, Frederick Douglass,
the great abolitionist, said,

"No one gives you freedom.

You got to struggle for it,
and you got to fight for it."

When we come together
as a people,

there is very little that
we cannot accomplish.

- You've just got

a bunch of losers

in this new economy.

The winners are spread out
and mostly ungrateful.

The losers are
concentrated and pissed.

- It's no longer the old
right versus left,

do you want more government
or less government?

It's really anti-establishment
versus establishment.

- How do we fix the problems
of our nation and grow forward

instead of tearing down
the shoulders that we stand on?

- It was at nighttime
when we had to leave.

We had to move in one day,

just put whatever
you could in a little bag

and had, like, one outfit.

My mom was like, "Oh, we're
moving to Mercer County,"

and, you know, when I was
a kid, everybody was like,

"Oh, Mercer's County's
better than McDowell.

"Like, they have everything,

and everything's nice,
and you can get jobs,"

and so it was a place

where people said your
dreams could come true.

We saw all these
two-story houses,

and we were amazed,

and we were wondering which one
we were gonna move into.

But we lived in this
little trailer right here.

And I remember I had this
little puppy for a time here,

and in the wintertime the snow
piled up on that roof,

and the roof caved in,

and it--thank God it
didn't hit the puppy,

but it--it was one little spot
the puppy was in that

the roof didn't fall
down into, one corner.

- Yeah.

My name is Sabrina Shrader.

I grew up in McDowell County,
where I had a lot of friends

and a lot of people
that helped me

get through a lot
of hard stuff

and long periods of poverty.

My friends told me to not
tell my stories in public,

you know, make us look bad,

and a few years ago I spoke at
the West Virginia Legislature.

The "West Virginia Gazette"
snapped a picture of it,

titled the article
"Poverty Gets a Face,"

and made the front page
of the newspaper.

I went up there,
and I told my truth.

- Most of the time I think
"Well, I'm only 17 years old.

I'm not really--"

- But when you get 18, you can
vote, so you need to know.

You need to know
what people stand for.

We've been taught not to get
involved with politics, right?

- Yeah.
- Well, that's wrong.

That's why we don't
have any power.

What's been happening is
all this money has been

controlling politics

'cause all the people
without money

haven't been involved, right?

- Yeah.

- So those are the people
that are in charge.

We have to change that.

Bye, love y'all.
- Love y'all.

- We're trusting these people
that have no clue

what we go through
to make decisions for us.

I'm tired of that, so I'm gonna
do my best to get in there

and become one of those
decision-makers.

- If you don't have jobs

and you're not paying
people decent wages,

the whole mechanism
of the United States

begins to fall apart,

and that's what's been
happening with us

for a long time.

We've neglected
the infrastructure.

We haven't paid attention
to the employment issue.

We've let wages stagnate or
decline, and then we look up,

and we say, "Oh, my goodness,

"why is there so much poverty
in this country?

Why is the middle class
having such a hard time?"

- All right. All right, Ellie,
make it in.

Okay.

All right, I got to drive now.

That's horrible.

just got about Wal-Mart?

- Oh, my husband called me
to let me know

that the Wal-Mart in Kimball,

which is where the food bank

is that helps a lot of people
in McDowell County

get food and clothes,
is shutting down,

and that's going to have
a drastic effect

on how they're able
to help people.

You're gonna get to meet
some of these people tomorrow.

It's not gonna be good.

It's, like,
a forgotten-about place.

[indistinct chatter]

- Okay, then.

We're only gonna be able
to serve 110 families today.

That's all the food
that we have.

We're going to try our best
to be here again on Monday.

If I give you food today, don't
you come back up in here Monday

'cause you know what's
gonna happen, right?

- Right.
- My name is Linda McKinney.

I'm director of Five Loaves
and Two Fishes Food Bank

in Kimball, West Virginia.

My suggestion is if we get
to you and you're past 110

is just kind of wait around,

and we might be able
to scrape up something.

We get one semi tractor trailer

a month from
Operation Blessing.

Our volunteers came
in early this morning

to break down the truck,

put it in the shopping carts.

We are also
a Feeding America site.

Anything that Wal-Mart
would dispose of,

we get that three days a week.

We will be losing
that food on the 28th

when Wal-Mart
closes their doors.

Now, there's a hundred-
and-some-plus at Wal-Mart,

not only are--they're
out of their jobs.

There's no way this
food bank can help them.

In the last three months
we've turned away more

and more and more.

It just gets sadder and sadder,

and then you have
47% of children

are considered homeless.

They're living
with grandparents

or other relatives,

so, you know,
we'll just regroup.

That's all we can do,
and if there's a crumb left,

I'll feed somebody, you know?

I'm from Italian heritage.
You feed people.

Can you listen, baby?
We're out of numbers.

We can only serve 110 today.

Go that way and pull
your truck up here

where you'll keep warm, baby.

So that's what we do.

- You feel guilty and shame
for yourself

'cause you think you
did something

to deserve to be poor,

and you must not be
working hard enough

because you can't pay your
bills, and you can't buy food.

I mean, something
must be wrong with you.

That's what I used to think.

I don't think that no more.

[reflective music]

- Well, let me thank all of you
for coming out

on a Saturday morning.

What I want to do is just chat
for a little while,

tell you a little bit
about myself

and some of the ideas
that we're fighting for.

I was born in New York City.

My dad was a paint salesman.

Grew up in a 3 1/2-room
apartment,

moved to Vermont in 1964,

ran for
the United States Senate

on a third party back in 1971,

and I got 2% of the vote.

Not dissuaded, I ran again,
and I got 1% of the vote.

[laughter]

Too dumb to quit,
I ran again and got,

eventually, 6% of the vote,
and then I stopped running.

I gave the people of Vermont a
break after one guy said to me,

"If you promise never to run
again, I will vote for you."

[laughter]

But I didn't keep that promise.

I am in Iowa because
I am giving thought

to running for president
of the United States.

What I am hearing is a lot
of support for the agenda

that I am proposing,

which is a agenda to create
millions of decent-paying jobs,

to raise the minimum wage,
to do pay equity,

to reform our disastrous
trade policies,

to deal with asking
the wealthy and powerful

to start paying their
fair share of taxes,

to deal with the national
healthcare problem.

The question is whether or not
there is the willingness

on the part of ordinary people
to in fact get engaged,

to stand up,
and to fight back.

Every worker in this room
is producing more than he

or she did 20, 30 years ago.

Are our wages going up
or our hours going down?

Quite the contrary, right?

People work longer hours in
many cases for lower wages.

While the middle class
is crumbling,

the wealthiest people
and the largest corporations

are doing phenomenally well.

Today the top 1/10 of 1%

owns more wealth
than the bottom 90%.

The Walton family of Wal-Mart
owns more wealth

than the bottom 40% of the
American people, one family.

I think we have
a moral obligation

to bring people together
for the sake of our kids

and our grandchildren
and the climate

and the planet, to say,

you know what? You can't keep
doing what you're doing.

You can't keep beating
down the middle class.

You can't keep
buying elections.

You can't keep sending
our jobs to China.

That's wrong.

So the job is to mobilize.

How effectively we can do that,
that remains to be seen.

Let me ask you this question.

Do you think we would
have a shot of winning

or doing well
in the Iowa caucus?

Honest assessment.

[applause]

All right.

- Our parents grew up
during the Depression.

We grew up in the '50s
and '60s,

and through the hard work of
our parents and grandparents,

we were able
to have decent lives,

got a decent education,
and we thrived.

You had a lot of politicians,

including politicians
in the Republican Party,

who were liberals, frankly--
frankly liberals,

I mean, to the left
of many Democrats today.

So they cared about the poor.

They cared about
the working classes.

They cared about
the middle class.

They thought that it was
important for people

to be able to go to college

and not come out with
staggering levels of debt,

and I think more than
anything they understood

that it was
absolutely essential

for people to have work,

and not just work,
but work at good wages.

Certainly when Reagan
was elected in 1980,

all bets were off.

This fantasy was perpetrated

that the best way
to help ordinary people

and poor people

was to turn all
of our resources

towards the very wealthy

and help them,

and they would do
better and better,

and then some of their wealth

would trickle down
to the masses.

Well, of course,
that was nonsense,

but it was a kind of nonsense
that gripped this society,

and the working classes

and the poor have been
worse off ever since.

- Five, six, seven, eight!

- I see a lot of ferment
across the land

in the United States right
now; people are not happy.

People understand that
things are not going well.

You have the Black
Lives Matter movement.

You have the movement
of low-wage workers.

They've been protesting
and calling periodic strikes.

I'd like to see
leadership emerge

that could begin to knit

some of these
movements together

so that they form alliances.

[evocative music]

- My name is Jan Williams.

I'm a 41-year-old mother

and a school bus driver
for L.A. USD.

I grew up in L.A.
in the '80s and '90s.

The neighborhood
that I grew up in

was a predominantly
black community,

a working class area.

Now the same areas are
being gentrified where we now

are being pushed out
of those communities,

and you see us
becoming more... white.

[laughs]

Rents are skyrocketing.
Jobs are scarce,

and I think a lot of people
are leaving the city for work.

[cheering]

I got involved with
the movement for Black Lives

through working with my union.

A friend of mine in our
labor union organized

a bus tour for us

to go to Ferguson to see
where Mike Brown was killed.

I really didn't even
know much about

what was the big deal
about that at the time.

It wasn't anything
that moved me, you know,

to investigate more about it,

so when we went to Ferguson,

we had an opportunity
to talk to people

who lived in the community

who shared with us
about the media blackout,

how they had tanks
out there, had tear gas.

People weren't allowed
to leave their house.

Basically, Ferguson had
become a war zone,

and I couldn't believe

that that could happen
here in this country.

[somber music]

Black Lives Matter,
it's an organization

of people like me,

of regular people
that's just doing

what we can
to create the change

that we need to see
so that we can live freely.

It began as a hashtag
on social media.

We've regularly organized
protests around the deaths

of black people killed
by law enforcement,

racial profiling,
police brutality,

racial inequality

in the United States
criminal justice system.

- No justice!

all: No peace!
- I said no justice!

all: No peace!

[indistinct chanting]

- [bleep]

- Get on the ground!

- Tears in Inglewood
at the location

where a night out
for single parents

ended with their dying
in a police shooting.

Officers responded to the call
of an occupied car

stopped in
Manchester Boulevard

early Sunday morning.

They saw a gun

and that both the man and
woman inside were unconscious.

- They were parked in
their car right here,

and they were asleep.

Police say they spent 45
minutes trying to wake them up

and they ended up dead, both
of them shot and killed

after a night
of being on a date.

We still--we're still
trying to get answers.

This system is designed to do
just exactly what it's doing,

so we will never get
justice under this system.

The system killed her.

- What do you tell your son?

- You mean about
police officers?

They make him nervous,
and it--and it hurts me

because we're not--you know,

he's not scared of what
they call gang members,

somebody look
just like him.

That's not gonna scare him
and intimidate him,

but he sees a police officer
with all this artillery

around his waist,

dark glasses looking at him,

and now he's nervous
and paranoid,

so I told him, you know,
I'm fighting for it.

We're fighting for change.
- Black lives, they matter here!

all: Black lives,
they matter here.

- Thank you, guys,

My name is Jan. I'm a organizer
with Black Lives Matter,

and I'm a union member
of [inaudible] Union 99!

- For some folks,
you're thinking,

"Well, tomorrow's
gonna get better

'cause Donald Trump said so."

Well, okay, you need
a little bit more history.

I think on the left we need
a little bit less history.

You know, we have a whole,
you know, Black History Month.

I would--at this point I would
trade in Black History Month,

20 of them for one
Black Future Weekend.

- Progressives have played
along with the racism game.

They've refused to confront
the ways in which racism

is used to divide
communities from each other

in order to maintain and
reproduce economic inequality.

- We've been doing
environmental justice,

racial justice,
immigrant rights.

Everyone's been doing their own
separate mobilizations,

separate set of priorities,

and we need a real
political revolution

that's multiracial,
multiethnic,

multi-everything
type coalition.

- A political revolution means
people feeling their power,

taking to the streets,
protesting there,

but strategizing, organizing,

taking control of the levers
of power in this country.

- Check two.
Check, testing, one, two.

[smooth jazz music]

- Then with your support
and the support of millions

of people
throughout our country,

we begin a political revolution

to transform our country
economically,

politically, socially,
and environmentally.

Bernie Sanders

kicked off his campaign
for president.

- He's a long shot.
- A long shot.

- I don't think he's gonna be
taken too credibly.

- Bernie Sanders is a
socialist, for God sakes.

- A thick Brooklyn accent.

- He's 73 years old.
He looks 91.

- He's a little crusty.
- He's a loon, isn't he?

- If Salvador Dali
and Dr. Seuss had a child

and that child was raised by
schizophrenic howler monkeys,

it would be Bernie Sanders!

Give me a taste of this crazy,
wacko cuckoo bird!

- If a bank is too big to fail,
that bank is too big to exist!

We must establish pay equity
for women workers.

We must be focused
on campaign finance reform.

- What a rational,

slightly left of center
mainstream politician.

or appealing to rich ♪

♪ Standing up for what's right
in a system that's all wrong ♪

Nine months ago we came
to this beautiful state.

- Thank you.

- We had no
political organization.

- Thank you!
- We had no money.

We had no name recognition,
and we were taking on

the most powerful
political organization

in the United States
of America.

[cheers and applause]

And tonight, while the results
are still not known,

it looks like we are
in a virtual tie.

[cheers and applause]

[women screaming]

- Donald Trump,
you know he's what?

- Bien business, bien deals.

♪

- I want to begin

by congratulating
Senator Sanders

on his victory.

[crowd roars]

- The candidacy
of Bernie Sanders,

for those involved
with grassroots politics,

was not as surprising
to those people

as those in
the corporate media,

you know, the pundits, who
know so little about so much,

explaining the world to us
and getting it so wrong.

- The people of New Hampshire
have sent a profound message

to the political establishment,

to the economic establishment,

and, by the way,
to the media establishment.

[crowd roars]

- Bernie Sanders rode
a movement that goes back

to Occupy

that burst
on the scene in 2011.

Hundreds and thousands
streamed into Zuccotti Park,

downtown Manhattan,

people expressing
deep dissent,

anger, and solutions.

What can be done? How do you
create a different world?

How do you challenge
those in power?

[contemplative music]

- We will make banks pay,

and we will reclaim
our democracy

because this government was
founded to be of the people,

by the people,
and for the people.

- Yeah!

- It belongs to us
because we are the 99%.

- Occupy was actually my first
real brush with activism.

I found out that there
was an Occupy L.A,

and I went down just to donate
some supplies and be like,

"Good job, guys.
Like, keep up the good work,"

and then go back to my life,

and I was very
quickly volun-told,

you know,
what I could do to help,

and I stayed, and I ended up
being there for two months

and, you know, being arrested
in the eviction.

I'm Elise Whitaker.
I'm in the field

organizing staff
with Democracy Spring.

We are a mass nonviolent
civil disobedience movement

aimed at getting money
out of politics

and ending voter suppression.

At that time I remember
a lot of folks telling me that,

you know, protesting
doesn't change anything

and that Occupy was
gonna be meaningless,

but ultimately,
four years later

we can look at our current
political climate,

and the idea of the 99%
is a household concept.

People talk about
income equality.

People talk about
campaign finance reform.

They talk about
Wall Street corruption.

- All right, so you're coming?

All right, muy bien.
That's exciting.

- Coming away from
that movement, you know,

we really realized
there's not one solution,

but there is one
major impediment

to us gaining traction
on any of these issues,

and that is that we don't have
a democracy that works for us.

so we started building
this movement

and kind of dreaming up
something

like Democracy Spring.

It's gonna be killer.
I don't know. I'm excited.

I think we're gonna
change the world.

- I don't think our Congress
is filled with criminals.

I think our Congress
is filled with people

who go there
for the right reasons

but then find themselves
in a system

that forces them to spend
an extraordinary amount of time

raising money from the
tiniest fraction of the 1%.

My focus in research
recently has been

on the--on basic corruption
of our democracy,

a system which plainly
benefits the rich

and gives them extreme
influence inside the system

relative to the middle class
and to the poor.

The empirical data
on the actual decisions

of our government show us that
what our government is doing

is not responding
to the average voter.

Our government's responding to
the donors of their campaigns.

What I became
convinced of was that

if we didn't find a way to
motivate a political movement

that could address
this fundamental issue,

then this democracy was toast.

- All right.
- That's surprisingly heavy.

- If you're meeting other folks

that are here to
take action with us,

make sure that they know
those training times

and locations, all right? Cool?

- Started Saturday, April 2nd
in Philadelphia,

a march from
the Liberty Bell to D.C,

and this is day seven.

We've come over 100 miles now.

My name's Kai Newkirk.

I'm the campaign director
of Democracy Spring.

I'm grateful
to be here with you.

We're a nonviolent army
of freedom fighters,

you know, and patriots
that's moving towards D.C.,

and our--just our strength
and capacity's

just growing every day.

Our demand is very clear.
It's very simple.

It's to take immediate action

to end the corruption
of big money in politics

and ensure free
and fair elections

that give us all
an equal voice.

There's four bills that are
on the table right now

that would start to
really build small donor,

citizen, public financing
of elections,

overturn Citizens United

and other decisions that have
taken away our capacity

to be able to say
now to superPACs

and no to billionaires
putting tens

and tens of millions
of dollars into elections,

restore the Voting Rights Act

which was gutted
by the Supreme Court,

and make it much easier
for people to vote,

like automatic registration,

ensuring that people
have access.

We're gonna march
to the Capitol,

to the people's house,

and we will claim that space,
you know, nonviolently, right?

Peacefully but with
a fierce determination,

and we are not
going to leave

until either Congress
listens to the people

and comes to their senses

and is willing
to take some action

to save our democracy

or they arrest us all
and send us to jail.

- One vote!

- There are people that say

and we can open up
the possibility for reform

that people don't think
is possible right now.

All great empires

who have been
resistant to change,

that has been their downfall.

- I think it's going into a
place of more open-mindedness

and more of love
rather than separation.

- We are here as part of our
50th anniversary celebration,

going back to our roots!

- If things are gonna change,
we've got to step up

to the plate
and take some risks.

If not us, who?
If not now, when?

You know, all it takes is
for good people to be silent.

Well, none of us
want to be silent.

- I'm so energized
that you all are here.

Are you feeling energized?

- So this movement, where does
it come for you personally?

- It's all love.
It's all love and hope.

It's that we are facing
a real crisis in our nation

when every voice
can't be heard

and every vote
can't be counted,

but I believe that we can do
better, you know,

and it's--to me
it's an act of patriotism.

- The whole idea is--
of a free market

separate from government

is an illusion.

Government determines
the rules of the game,

and the question,
fundamentally,

is who has most influence
in designing those rules?

Many people in America today,

they've internalized
the propaganda

that somehow you're paid
what you're worth

without an understanding
that the market itself

is a product of decisions made,

and what you're paid really is
a matter of who has the power

to determine what you're paid.

Virginia Legislature,

Senator Bernie Sanders'
office called me.

I got to speak on a panel there

in front of the Health
Committee and the Senate.

It was a relief to see
and hear that other people

knew that poverty
does exist in America

and that even if people hadn't
growing up living in it,

that some of them did
have the right perspectives.

In Charleston where Bernie's
coming to a rally there?

- Uh-huh.

- They're shutting their
schools down and everything.

- Quite a bit of excitement
out here for the--

- Mm-hmm.
- For Bernie coming?

- Yeah, I haven't even really
got to practice my speeches.

Look at all these

poverty in America

and ask people to chime in
on their personal experiences,

what can we do,

what should
communities be doing,

what can government do?
You know, what's our goal?

- I am really pleased that
this event--

I know what it's like
to not have enough food

and what it's like to stand
in line at a food bank,

and living in poverty every day
creates toxic stress,

which causes even
more problems.

So that we can come together

for community conversation
on rural poverty.

Now I would like to welcome and
introduce... Bernie Sanders.

- Thank you all.
This is quite the turnout.

Today is not a political rally.

What today is about
is discussing an issue

that we simply, as a nation,

in Congress and the media,
do not talk about,

and that is the issue
of poverty

and the toll that poverty

is taking

on the people of our country.

Unbelievably,

there are fairly wide
swathes of communities

in America today,

including McDowell County,
West Virginia,

where life expectancy

is actually going down
for a variety of reasons

having to do with despair--

people going no place
in a hurry,

can't find good jobs,
unemployment too high.

People are becoming alcoholic,
addicted to opiates and heroin,

and are committing suicide,

taking place in America
right now in the year 2016.

How severe is the drug
problem in your judgment?

- I would say that 90%
of my clients

are in some way
addicted to drugs.

Beyond that, it has
touched my personal life,

as my mother died of
a prescription drug overdose.

- The stress is--
it's unbearable...

living in poverty,

and we don't have
anything else,

so either you turn to drugs,
or you fight through.

We have nothing else.

- Thank you.

You're not gonna get a handle
on the drug problem, I think,

unless we deal with
some economic issues

and we deal with the despair

and the hopelessness that
a lot of people are feeling.

[applause]

- I was embarrassed
to talk at first

because I am
Sabrina Shrader's sister.

I actually was pretty smart
as a teenager.

We both made good grades.
I was involved in sports.

Well, I got on drugs
not by a doctor.

I ended up getting married
to a drug dealer.

It ruined my life.
We got in some trouble.

He caught charges,
and I took the rap for it,

and, you know, there was times
when I was sitting in jail

that I thought that I would
just come out and give up,

but I didn't,

so what is it about
how do you get second chances

for trying to turn
your life around?

If I had a job or if I
had things that I could do,

places you can go,
it would be a lot easier.

- That's not easy
to say publicly.

Thank you very much
for your courage.

Sabrina is a person who comes
out of that environment

with that much despair,

and yet she is keeping
her eyes on the prize,

looking forward, and I
respect her immensely.

- We have got to revitalize
American democracy.

We have got to bring
millions of people

today are not in the process.

I want people to understand

that politics is
not a dirty word.

It is how change takes place
in a democratic society.

- Last night the Sanders
dream of reproducing

that Michigan miracle
didn't come true.

The movement took
a big body blow.

Ohio lost. Illinois lost.

Every contest lost,

and suddenly things
look very different.

Part of what went wrong with
the Bernie nomination quest

was that the white left,

the populist left
has been addicted

to this dumb analysis

that we call trickle-down
justice, okay?

This idea that you don't
have to talk about race.

Don't talk about racism.

Just say you're gonna go
after the big banks.

You're gonna fix
social security,

and then shh,
racism will go away.

Well, no sane
African-American person

ever born believes that.

The entire white populist left
was proceeding along this road

that was inevitably
gonna come into conflict

with the racial justice left,

and it took the form
of Black Lives Matter

charging the stage.

They're challenging
the entire society to say,

"We matter. Our lives matter.

Our experience matters.
You must take us seriously."

- We're doing this work
not for political reasons,

not for any other reason
than to seek justice

for the families
of those whose lives,

whose bodies have been
stolen by the police

and also disrupting the system

that oppresses us

and kills us routinely.

- This is not only
about racial justice.

This is about
American justice system

and making the infrastructure
work for everybody.

- All Americans want a safer,

better relationship
with law enforcement,

and that's what
we're talking about.

- And when I'm finished,

the baton is gonna be passed
to another until we get justice

will be justice for all.

- Every Tuesday, the Los
Angeles Police Commission

meeting is held.

Over nearly two years
now Black Lives Matter

organizers have come
to the meetings.

We've had a--one
of our citizens arrested,

an 81-year-old man,
for speaking off-topic.

We've had organizers arrested

for speaking
beyond two minutes.

There are police officers

standing at every corner

to intimidate people.

These are all tactics
that the current president

of the Police Commission,
Matt Johnson,

is using to intimidate us
and keep us in silence

and repress
and oppress our voice.

The Police Commission
is actually supposed to be

working on behalf
of their citizens.

- [speaking Spanish]

- I demand justice.

- Thank you, sir.

[cheers and applause]

- We the public,
black lives matter,

any life matters.

You have to stop
injuring people.

- Yeah, say her name.

- Say her name.

- I start calling the jails
to see why she didn't

make it to the court.

They tell me they didn't
know where she was.

I said, "My name is Lisa Hines.

"I'm trying to locate
my daughter,

Wakiesha Wilson.
She was in your custody."

I called every hour
on the hour,

and they couldn't tell me
anything, and they said,

"Well, ma'am, we're just
trying to find her,"

and they gave me
a different number to call,

so I called the number.

That's the coroner's,
and he told me,

"I'm sorry to inform you,

"but your daughter
is deceased,

suicide from hanging."

So I said,
"No, she didn't do that.

No, she did not kill herself."

That was four days she had
been dead before I found out,

and I had been talking
to the police,

and they didn't
tell me anything.

I did speak with a detective,

and he did tell me that

she had a altercation
with a officer.

After the altercation, she
was found dead in the cell.

It's not only Wakiesha.

There's Sandra Bland,
Shalia Hayes.

They all are women of color.

They are black women, and they
say they were found hanging.

Every black woman that goes
to jail leaves in a body bag

because she committed suicide?

No. I don't think so.

That's--no.

They need--they
have to come up with

something better than that.

- And none of you all have
given them answers.

The first report--

- No, wait, but you let the
police talk over four minutes.

The first LAPD report
said that you all...

[inaudible]--
the telephone booth.

The second report said that
she was lying unconscious

in the middle of the floor,
so which one was it?

There were over 57 community
members who wanted to speak.

Out of all the stories
we heard,

they were all pretty
repetitive that the LAPD

is not here
serving the community

in a way that the community
is happy about.

Show him the picture. Show him
the picture of your son.

That's her son
that the police killed.

That's her baby.

We gonna fight for this,
and her m--her baby

too, your baby
killed too, right?

These are the mothers.
These are why we fight.

All these tears we see,

there's millions more
that she has cried

and will continue to cry.

Chief Beck,
he could care less.

It's okay to him for her
to shed these tears.

The unions is where
Garcetti goes

when he's ready
for reelection,

so when it's time
to start playing politics,

they're heads
are gonna roll now

because the unions
are getting involved

and getting ready
to support and stuff.

- You know what?
- So I was hoping

to get some more solidarity
with la--with labor

that are actually--they're
working at the beginning too.

- The idea that labor and
civil rights was two movements

but with one goal was
expressed very early on.

The march on Washington,
that was the first time

I had seen that many
black folk together,

standing in such
pride and dignity

and hearing the
magnificent voices.

Randolph's was one of them.

John Lewis, who was a kid,
was another of those,

and of course,
when Dr. King spoke,

you could hear a pin drop.

I was 15.

I didn't know that
it was history at the time.

I just knew that it
sounded important,

and I wanted
to be there.

This is my 45th year
being in the labor movement.

I'm a grandmother.

At 67, I get to see
the whole gamut, all right?

And I watch some of
the young people today

who are expressing themselves
in all kinds of ways.

I think about one sister
in particular,

Bree in the situation
in South Carolina

and the Confederate flag.

Everybody was waiting
for a decision

to come down
to remove it.

Girlfriend jumped
on that doggone pole,

pulled that puppy down,
handed it over,

and said, "What next?"

Some of it is moment

because of the nature
of the instant news,

the texting, the Instagram,
all the rest of it.

That's a moment piece,

but when they take
those moments

and turn it into a movement,

hot damn, we're ready
to rock and roll.

Let's go, and us
gray-haired old people,

or if we dye it red, brown,

or whatever, we're ready
to support them.

We the people have the power.

We'll learn how to use
those democratic principles

and rights that we have
because after all,

we are the giants that
our forefathers envisioned.

- Welcome to you,

if this is your
first action,

your first time thinking
about getting arrested.

You're gonna be
a family tomorrow.

You're gonna be
an action family.

I like to think
of direct action

as being kind of inherently
about conflict in some ways,

and it's not necessarily bad.

Conflict and tension is
we're trying to make conflict

that's usually below
the surface really visible

so that people can't
ignore it anymore.

- We're not just signing
online petitions anymore,

or we're not just
yelling on the Internet.

We're finally getting
to civil disobedience.

People have had it, and
Americans are uniting to say,

"We're going to take action."
We've got to fix the system.

Democracy Spring
is a part of that.

We're in Philly right now

at the Democratic
National Convention,

and it's a mess, and Sanders'
supporters are in rebellion,

and the Democratic Party

is trying to squelch
that rebellion.

They're trying to take
their signs away,

take away their voice,

and make sure that
they fall in line,

and all it does is drive
independence away

that sees a machine
that does not relate to them.

[foreboding music]

- You've been all
over the place.

- Yeah, moving and shaking.

In June I was asked to speak
representing West Virginia,

America, and Bernie about ways
to reduce poverty in America,

so I spoke in front of the
Democratic National Committee

in Washington, D.C.,

and that was the first time
I ever flew on a plane.

I never thought I would
do that, but I did it.

This has felt the weirdest

'cause this building
is so huge.

I'm not accustomed to Uber
and all that jazz,

so I'm kind of
just following them,

and whatever
guides me, I'm going.

- The way they rigged
this election,

the way they rigged
Hillary Clinton

is terrible for democracy.

- Are you a delegate?
- I am a delegate.

- From what state?
- I am from Arizona.

all: No more election fraud!

- We started off
with the establishment

and the media considering us
to be a fringe candidacy,

50 points behind in the polls,

and nobody outside
of Vermont knew who I was.

But by the time the campaign
ended, we had won 22 states.

We ended up with 1,900
pledged delegates

to the Democratic
National Convention,

about 46% of the total.

We helped write the most
progressive platform

in the history
of the Democratic Party.

As a result of our efforts,
Secretary Clinton

changed her views on a number
of very important issues,

such as the Keystone Pipeline,

the TPP, minimum wage,
higher education,

and I think it is fair to say

that the progressive
movement today

is in far better
shape than it was

before we began the campaign,

and I know that there is

an enormous amount
of disappointment

that we did not do better,

but I think our attitude
has got to be

not to look back
but to look forward.

We accomplished
an enormous amount,

and people are just gonna
have to keep working hard.

Social change, it doesn't
happen overnight,

not for the worker's movement,
trade unionism, civil rights,

not for the women's movement,
not for the gay movement,

not for the
environmental community.

The struggle continues,

and we got to roll
up our sleeves

and maintain the pressure.

where the delegates can go in

and then said that we were
gonna go over any barriers

to bring our message
to the Democratic Party.

They need to live up
to their name

and fight to make this the last
corrupt, billionaire-dominated,

voter suppression-marred
election in the country.

They're bringing dozens of us.

This is just a bunch
of the men.

Gonna bring us down
to process us, I suppose.

- The DNC's in a world

We love Hillary Clinton,"

and so they assume
their perspective

is the perspective
of everybody out there.

"She's been so nice to us.
She's great."

Well, that's not
what they think.

If this election is
about Hillary Clinton,

we will lose, okay?

And when I say we,
yes, progressives,

and yes, the whole country,

'cause that clown
Donald Trump will win,

and God help us all
if that happens,

but right now that's exactly
what the DNC's doing.

They're handing him the
election with their arrogance.

You have cast 81 votes
for Secretary Clinton

and 66 votes for
Senator Sanders.

- And the nomination is going
to Hillary Clinton

as of just now,

and that's the big news
in this country,

around the world.

- Hillary Clinton
will get credit

for having built a machine.

Bernie Sanders
is building a movement.

Those are very
different things,

both important, both necessary,

and at the end of the day,
99 times out of 100,

you'd rather have a machine
than a movement.

They're more reliable,
machines.

- Hillary Clinton understands
that she cannot alienate

this democratic base

which I think represents

people across the political
spectrum in this country.

They are seeming to make
some concessions,

but if they are only symbolic,
it won't be enough for many.

- You cheater.

You're a cheater.

- And so the Trump nightmare

begins to emerge,

Trump-zilla just crushing the
villagers in state after state,

and he has now turned
the entire political system

into a reality TV show
in which he is the star,

and nobody else
knows what to do

because they're still
operating

inside the old media system.

On reality TV, the villain
is always the star,

and he understands that,

and so he has stranded
the entire political culture

inside an entertainment culture

that the political class
doesn't understand.

- I couldn't tell
the difference

between CNN, MSNBC, and Fox

because Donald Trump sounds
the same

on all three networks.

You know, you constantly
would hear his voice

with the lower third that said,

"Breaking news, breaking news."

He is ripping open the
underbelly of hate in America.

He is opening a Pandora's box
that is extremely frightening.

He's calling women pigs,

and he's saying no to Muslims
coming into the country.

He's calling Mexicans rapists.

- Donald Trump has found
this big set of mostly white

working-class folks
who are falling,

and he has said,
"I will be your champion.

"I will say crazy stuff,

"but I am gonna be
for you no matter what,

and therefore you will be
for me no matter what."

- For most of the day I wasn't
actually too worried about it.

I was in New York. I was about
to--I had obligations at CBS.

I'm just kind of enjoying
my day in New York.

- As we were driving
around New Hampshire

trying to energize all of the
canvassers who were out there,

there were really only Trump
signs along the streets.

I started to get this feeling
in the pit of my stomach

that we might not win

and that the politics
of hate and fear

might actually win
this election.

- It wasn't until Florida
returns began coming in

and a bunch of the trackers

were showing a huge surge of
votes in the rural counties.

He's winning Florida.
He's winning Iowa.

Ohio is very close,

and the projections show
he's gonna win that too,

and I'm thinking,

"Oh, like, there's a pretty
good chance he's gonna win."

- We were in upstate New York

trying to turn out the vote
for Zephyr Teachout.

Her race was very close,
but she didn't win in the end,

and just watching
the results come in,

I mean, it was painful,

knowing what the consequences

were gonna be for people
in our country.

- I was actually working on
a campaign here in Indiana.

Seeing the numbers come in
and seeing kind of, like,

loss after loss after loss

was rough, you know?

- By that point I was on
the phone with organizers

around the country--it was
maybe 11:00 at night,

coordinating protest actions

and other events
to get people together.

The way that I survived
the election result

was to organize.

- Now the question for
Republicans is how much

will Trump influence
their ideology?

Will they have
that same combination

of aggressive nationalism,

of white identity politics,
of nominal commitment

to delivering
benefits to people?

Question for Democrats is,
how much are we going

to see lots of candidates
and candidacies

modeled after some element
of the Sanders campaign?

[laid-back acoustic strumming]

- You can do polls
all day long,

but it's still not going
to catch everybody,

and you're not gonna know
who the majority

is because people are split.

I'm running for a house
of delegates seat

in district 27
in West Virginia.

Three richer-than-me men,

they've had those seats
for a while.

They get money
from the coal PACs,

the political action
committees.

My money came from the unions,
the teachers' unions,

the United Miners of America.

Some people gave me donations,

so I had about $8,000 from
mostly West Virginia people.

Well, then this group
came together

after Bernie didn't
get nominated.

It's called Our Revolution,

and they help regular
people get into office.

Well, I'm the only
West Virginia candidate

that they endorsed,

so I got about $22,000
added to that from them.

I've got ten billboards up.
I've got ads in the paper,

which has been
the most expensive thing.

An ad in the paper was
about $2,000 for one day.

I mean, that's a lot of money,
and I hate spending on this,

but that's what you have to do
to get your name out there,

so I'm loving the hell
out of people.

Literally what I'm doing,
loving the hell out of them

until you see the light
come in people,

and I do get to see that.

To see my best
friend in McDowell

County, who is
a recovering addict,

is thinking about running
for mayor in the town

that she lives,
yeah, that drives me.

When my youngest sister
can go and campaign

with me four hours
on a street in Princeton

and talk to hundreds
of people,

yeah, that keeps me going.

To get the sleeping
giants to wake up,

you have to get them
to believe in themselves,

and once they believe
in themselves,

then they can operate
through love,

but you got to get them
to love themselves too,

and right now in America
most everybody hates themselves

'cause we're stuck right now.

I was stuck and didn't know
it till three years ago,

and once you get stuck and
you need to grow, guess what?

You go through a lot
of growing pains.

It hurts, but pain
doesn't last forever

unless you stay stuck,
so you got to keep going.

This is it.
There's no more votes.

[calm music]

- I'm just gonna keep doing
what I'm doing,

keep telling my stories,
keep being involved,

keep uniting people
to get involved,

keep connecting the dots,
keep teaching,

keep doing what I'm doing
and keep growing it.

"Well, she's a Democrat.
She ain't a Christian.

She's for abortion."
That ain't true.

All these rich people,

Mainers.

Look out, West Virginia,

'cause we're gonna
have to rise up.

Like, come on.

- Clearly a lot more
has to be done,

overturning Citizens United,

moving to public
funding of elections,

doing away with Republican
efforts to suppress the vote,

making it harder
for poor people

or people of color to vote,

getting, even more
importantly,

progressives elected
to the city council,

to the state legislature,
to school boards.

What I want to see is
that people understand

that getting involved
in the political process

is not only not a big deal,

it's what your
birthright is about.

- I see the optimism in
the progressive community

moving forward,

and I saw it in
the Bernie Sanders campaign.

Here was a Palestinian Muslim
girl from Brooklyn, New York,

introducing a white
75-year-old man from Vermont

in a place like Wisconsin
to a 90% white audience.

No one in this campaign
ever told me,

"Look, here are
your talking points.

Here are the issues
you can't discuss."

People said, "You go up there.

"Bernie's coming out
in ten minutes.

"You got ten minutes to talk.

Say whatever you want. Be you.
Be all of you, everything."

- We need a new framework
and a new language

for how we think
about who is the "we."

It's always more powerful
to begin at the place

where lots of different
experiences come together.

We call it whole
person politics

because it rejects the notion

that you should have to choose

between one part
of your experience

or try to carve out
one section of your experience

from a whole life.

- I want people to realize
that when you're organizing,

that the most basic thing
that you do

is look around the table

and think to yourself,
"Who's not here?

Whose voice is not
at the table?"

And once we start doing
that for each other,

then our organizing becomes
more intersectional,

and believe or not,
we expand the table,

which means we expand
and build more power.

- Today we are struggling
with all those promises

that got made in our documents
that govern us as a people.

The discussion today talked
about those democratic rights

and the principles
of our country.

The bottom line is,
civil rights and labor rights

may have two movements
but it's always one goal,

for the strengthening
of character of people

so that they realize
the dignities

that the country promised us.

- I have the privilege of,
for the last 15 years,

working for 1199 SEIU,

which is a union whose history

and whose roots
have always been one

that the struggle of workers

to have economic justice
in their lives

is deeply grounded
in making sure

that those same workers
have justice in their lives

when they go back
to their communities.

- What makes a difference
is knowing where you've been

and the shoes
that you've walked in

and seeing your--having your
perspective that I don't have,

and we need to bring that
not only into the rank and file

but into our leadership.

- My generation doesn't
want to organize

the way the generation
above us did.

It's this kind of top-down,
hierarchical, rank-and-file

organizing is--
is incredibly effective

and has done wonders for
the people of this country,

but it's not how people
of my generation operate.

Millennials have a much
more natural understanding

of horizontalism and
decentralized communications,

and I think that that's going
to be really imperative

to how we organize
going forward,

and I also think that
there's just this freshness

and this creativity that we
can bring to the movement,

and hopefully some humility.

- We need to find ways
to work together.

We need to listen to the voices
that often get shut down

so that in 2018

when we do have these
big elections coming up,

we're ready.

- We brought together
35 millennials

from across the
organizing spectrum

to come together
in Washington, D.C.

in anticipation
of Trump's government

to start talking
about the next steps

that we need to take
as a multiracial movement

led by millennials
to tackle the issue

of not just resisting Trump

but also how do we
strengthen democracy?

How do we reclaim
our democracy?

How do we get young people
to stay involved

in the political process?

- Less than 24 hours af--
you know,

after the polls had closed,

we had, like, 200 people
on a phone call,

and we have a listserv now
of thousands of people,

many of whom have never
been activists before.

- If you want people to stay
involved, they have to win,

and it can be small things.

It can be the establishment
of a group.

You know, it can be, you know,

a service that you're
providing for the community.

- I am worried about
trendy activism.

I'm worried about, like--like,
it's gonna die down,

and people are
gonna normalize Trump.

- We're in such an interesting
moment of crisis

and opportunity

because old systems
are breaking down.

There's an opportunity
to do something new

because whether it's Democracy
Spring or Black Lives Matter

or the Dreamers,

we understand that
the work of direct action,

of actually confronting

and trying to interrupt
business as usual,

is required to change
people's hearts and minds,

to open up sense of
possibility and imagination,

and to make something that
yesterday seemed impossible,

tomorrow seem inevitable.

- As the public, we paid
for the cameras,

so why can't we see them?

Obviously, when the footage is
beneficial to law enforcement,

then you release it,

but when it shows
something different,

you don't release it.

We're gonna keep coming back,

and if Wakiesha Wilson
killed herself,

we want to see it.

- It's bullshit that y'all
can continue to act like this

is a civil conversation,

that y'all are doing
something for the community

when Wakiesha Wilson's
family is sitting here.

Y'all have still failed to give
them any real, concrete answers

about what happened
to her daughter,

and y'all are sitting here
talking as

if this is a big step forward
for the community.

That's a slap
in the fucking face.

- We don't know what else
to do, right?

We don't know how to express
our pain and anger,

and we don't know
how to get justice.

And we've been told that
if you just engage the system,

that's democracy,
and we know it's a lie.

We know y'all gonna
go back there.

Then you're gonna
come out and say,

"LAPD is telling the truth
about itself."

We know what the outcome is!

- On behalf of the entire
commission, I want to again

extend our condolences
for the death of Ms. Wilson

to her mother, Ms. Hines,

her children,
family, and friends.

In this case,
the evidence shows

that there were
no substantially

involved personnel,

and accordingly no tactics
were employed,

no firearms were drawn,
and no force was used.

Accordingly, the commission
made no finding

in each of these areas

and unanimously adopted
the recommendations

of the chief of police.

The commission
has carefully reviewed

the evidence in this case.

Right now the work that
we're doing here with BLMLA,

our project with making
black lives matter in schools

and starting within L.A. USD,
within the city of L.A.,

with these small,
local elections.

We have people running
for school board.

We have city council
that are running,

and also our city mayor
is coming up this year,

so those elections
are important too.

That's how we're able to start
to build those models

that we want to see
on a national basis.

- [inaudible] confused, scared,

worried about the future

not only because I am a student

but because I am
a student of color, a Latina.

- When you actually look at how
race is shaping the economy,

how class and gender
all work together

to create a situation
of inequality,

that's when you actually
start to see the full picture

and you start to create
better solutions.

for standing for your students,

and for the students we say
this may be your first.

Let it not be your last.

- They're a shared
disadvantage

and a shared struggle,

and if you can convince people
to see their disadvantages

as mutually tied together,

you have the basis
for a political movement.

- You know, to be honest,
you know,

I think it's actually
hopeful for people to say,

"Yes, it's actually worse
than we thought,"

because it's only when we
start there that we can fight

for the things that we really
need to solve the problems.

Obama was able to
give the grassroots

a deep sense of optimism,

but what he didn't give them

was a way to keep
making change

once he was in office.

- So we've been doing
environmental justice,

racial justice,
immigrant rights.

Everyone's been doing their
own separate mobilizations,

separate set of priorities,

so the downfall of
the progressive community

is the lack of
intersectional organizing

over the course
of a long time.

- I think Bernie Sanders
gave us a tremendous opening,

and now it's up to us
to take that opening.

The revolution is about
people getting involved

and being active and being
in it for the long haul.

- There is an argument
being made that inside

the Sanders campaign

they distributed
these responsibilities

way more down to the base
than ever before,

and that capacity now
is there.

Instead of it all being
run from the center,

you know, where Bernie
controls the email list,

many people are
actually in positions

of being the network hub
for their local network.

- There's a million ways

that we should be
continuing the revolution.

It's every local fight,
state fight, regional fight,

constituency fight,

fights to defend black lives,

fights on immigration,
fights for LGBTQ rights.

It's all these--you know,

everybody has
to keep fighting.

politicians on notice

that we will not shut up.

And every time
a life is stolen,

we will rise up.

I've also become an organizer
with Black Lives Matter

here in Los Angeles.

- People get tired of greed
controlling them,

and they start voicing
their opinions

and organizing
their communities

and having meetings
and make change happen.

Take your power back.

And I asked her
if she was voting,

and she said, "No, I never
vote," and I said, "Why?"

And she said, "'Cause it
doesn't change anything,"

and I said, "But see,
I am one of you, like,

and I am running,
and I need you to vote."

- This is not gonna be easy.

We look at the history
of progress in our country.

There've been huge setbacks
on all these fights.

It took time.
It took struggle.

People had to overcome
obstacles and setbacks.

Why would it be
any different now?
