Take a look at this headline.

"A Michigan trucker believes
he encountered
and shot the dogman."

What in God's name
is a dogman?

Okay, bear with me.

There have been a ton
of recent sightings

of this human
wolf-like creature
in Michigan.

Most recently by this guy,
Joe Barger,
who did not believe in dogman.

But he says it attacked him
and he fought back.

-And not only did he shoot it,
he killed it.
-[Josh] What?

[Phil] So there's
a dogman body out there

-we can do a DNA analysis on?
-Dude, this is amazing.

[Heather] Well, that's where
the story gets even wilder.

He says that before he could
retrieve the body,

government agents came
and took the body away.

Not only that,

they also told him to be quiet
and threatened him.

This story is bananas,
but I've heard of this.

-What?
-[Josh] Yes, this dogman,

government conspiracy thing
is a real thing.

And actually, sightings
of a dogman creature

date back centuries.

Terrifying tales
of a canine cryptid
dubbed the dogman

begin in the old histories
of the Odawa tribes
in what is now Michigan.

The first documented claim
of a dogman appears in 1887,

when lumberjacks
in Wexford County
survive an encounter

with what they describe
as a monstrous amalgamation

of hound and human.

In 1938,

Robert Fortney
is in the same area

when he is attacked
by a pack of wild dogs.

He claims
the leader of the pack
rises onto its hind legs

and watches him
with what he describes
as human eyes.

Though the story
sounds outlandish,

in the decades since,
there have been countless

alleged dogman encounters,

often corroborated
by compelling photos
and footage.

Blamed for violent deaths
and disappearances
over the years,

the creatures are said to be
an astonishing
seven to ten feet tall,

with a wolf-like head
on a human torso.

Witnesses claim
they can charge on all fours
or run bipedal.

They also say
the dogman's eyes
are very human-like.

Often amber.

And its howl
is said to resemble
a human scream.

[howling]

Some allege
the U.S. government

knows all about these
disturbing canine creatures,

but wants to keep them secret
from the public.

Incredibly, some go
even further,

claiming to have seen dogman
on U.S. military bases,

fueling a jaw-dropping debate

over whether this creature
was actually created

in some kind
of government experiment:

A wild weapon
tamed by our military.

Now Heather was contacted
by a trucker
who claims to have been

personally attacked
by a dogman
that he then shot and killed.

[gunshot]

Can there really be any truth
to this wild story?

Is the dogman out there
or is the tail truly
just wagging the dog?

Heather, you're buying this?

Okay. I don't know about this
government conspiracy thing,

but there could be some truth
to something being out there.

There's millions of acres
of forest
and hundreds of years

worth of stories
about something similar.

All right. Phil, I'm guessing
you're skeptical.

I don't know if I'm so ready
to go down this rabbit hole.

Listen, like so many
other conspiracy theories,
it could be people

misidentifying something
influenced
by what they read online,

what they see in movies,
see on TV.

Whoa, Phil, don't bite
the hand that feeds here.

Look, I understand.
We do have to be careful

when it comes
to conspiracy theories.

People wanting something
to be real is not the same
as it being actually true.

But there is something
about this story
that really intrigues me.

It has been around
for so long.

It has gained
so much traction.

I want to know
what is the truth
behind this thing?

Like, where did this
come from?

So go and investigate.

Meet this trucker,
see if you can verify

his dogman attack
or the government involvement

and find out the truth
behind the dogman.

[Josh] It's
a two-and-half-hour flight

from New York
to Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Then, it's another
90-minute drive north

to the Manistee
National Forest,

where I've arranged
for Phil and Heather

to meet up with our alleged
dogman witness.

For years,
it's been Bigfoot, right?

-Yeah.
-But now,

there's a huge uptick
in the dogman.

-Why is that?
-We know there's been reports

of a dogman-like creature
since the 1800s,

but there are people
that believe

it's actually
a recent creation
of the government.

These are those
conspiracy angles
that I have a tough time with.

The way
I see conspiracy theories
is it is a dramatic way

to talk about something
you don't quite understand.

I mean,
look at what people talk about

in conspiracy circles.
flat Earth theory,
lizard people.

That is a gross exaggeration.

We know there's only
one lizard person. It's Josh.

But lizard people? No.

Did you know
there's a really cool,

long-tailed duck
that you could spot here
in Michigan?

[Heather] Of course there is.
I mean, what would you do
without your birds?

[Phil] I don't know.

-And that is our truck stop.
-[Heather] That's a big rig.

All right, let's see
what he's got to say.

[Heather] Joe Barger
is a long-haul trucker

who's been driving
the Michigan back roads
for decades.

And it's on this stretch
of highway where

he says he came face to maul
with a terrifying dogman.

So our understanding
is you've got
quite a crazy story

-that happened to you
on this road.
-Yeah.

Can you just
walk us through it?

Tell us from the beginning
what happened that day.

I was picking up a load
and as I was coming back,

there was a air leak
that I had.

So I pulled in here.

I just got out my tools
and got underneath,

and that's when I noticed
the atmosphere was--

It was really different.

Then I heard footsteps.

[footsteps approaching]

So I got right back
in my truck.

As I was leaving,
I looked on the right side

and I see that
there's a wolf head
looking down,

peering in at me
from the passenger side.

-A wolf head, staring at you.
-Staring at me,
keeping up with me.

I'm at about 20 miles an hour.

What are the chances here
that this is a bear or a wolf

that jumped onto the side
of your truck

and was essentially trying
to get in?

There's no chance of that.

He was running next to me.

-On two legs.
-On two legs?

-Yup.
-[Heather] But that's like
nine feet up.

That's super tall.

Yeah, and he was stooping down
to look in.

So I pulled my gun out

from the side of my seat
and shot twice as fast
as I can shoot it.

-Did you hit it?
-I hit it.
It went down immediately.

What do you think it was
that you shot on this road?

A dogman.

Because he was reaching in
with his clawed hand

like a raccoon-looking hand,

but just five times bigger
than my hand.

About three
to four minutes later,

I feel like
I have to turn around
and go back.

As I'm approaching,

there's people already there,
right where this occurred.

And I'm thinking,
what are these people
doing here?

And I can tell that

this thing that I just shot
is gone.

The body was no longer there?

You could see the disturbance
in the ground,

but it was gone.

-[Heather] I mean,
that's strange.
- [Joe] Yeah.

Eventually, I get detained
by federal agents.

"Detained by federal agents."
What do you mean?

Yeah, they pulled me in,

and they showed me
some homeland
security identification.

How did this conversation go
with the feds?

Intimidation
right off the bat,

like, we know who you are,
we know what you did.

You killed our asset.

Uh, you're not going
to talk about this again.

And if you do,
these are the things

that we can do
to make your life miserable.

They told you
that you killed their asset?

Yeah.

So they're trying
to intimidate you
into silence?

Yeah.

It looks like it didn't work.

Well, it did
for about four years.

But then I decided
I'm not doing that anymore.

This is more disturbing
than my encounter.

The government
is controlling these cryptids.

They're real.

[Phil] Joe's bizarre sighting
happened in the middle
of Manistee National Forest,

which spans over
1,300 square miles
of western Michigan.

Apex predators out here
typically do not venture

so close to humans
along the highways.

I think our best bet
to encounter whatever it is
that Joe saw

is to head deep
into the thick,
rugged woodlands.

So deep we're gonna need
a special set of wheels.

[Phil] I did a scan
of the satellite imagery
of this region

and came across
a large clearing

that would serve
as a prime hunting ground

for any apex predator
out here.

That's where I wanna head.

Check this clearing out

What are we looking at?

[Phil] Meadows like this
in the middle of a big forest

are super important
for the potential prey animals
around here.

So things like deer,
rabbits, gophers,

because they know
they have grass
they can eat,

but also they've got
quick shelter,

if something does
try to come and eat them.

And to make it even better,
we have this evergreen
pine forest on this side,

and we have that
deciduous forest on that side.

And anytime in an ecosystem
where you're at the border
of two different habitats,

you have
a higher species biodiversity.

And right now,
we have three habitats.

We have the forest,
the meadow and that forest.

-Trifecta.
-Yes.

So bottom line is,
if there's wildlife
in this national forest,

we have a great chance
of seeing them here.

[Heather] I guess
we should take
a look around, right?

[Phil] Yeah.

I'm not gonna be much
for tracks here,
but we might get lucky.

Ooh. Look what we got here.

-Pellets.
-We got some pellets.

So we know
the deer do come here.

There's some activity.

Well, that's good.
At least we know
there's prey here.

[Phil] Yeah.

As we continue
to scour the meadow

for any signs
of an apex canine predator

or the dogman cryptid
our witness Joe claims
to have encountered,

we establish
multiple extra sets of eyes
along the perimeter.

-Is that good enough?
-Yeah.

Maybe get some
dogman's shoulder?

Yeah. I mean, it's above me.

[Phil] These camera traps
will capture any wildlife
that crosses their sensors.

And I'll get an alert sent
to my phone
anytime a photo is snapped.

So let's assume
there's something
like a dogman out here

and that the dogman
is at least part-canine.

And some of the reports
of people seeing dogman say

that he's in packs
amongst wolves.

So let's howl.
Let's bring in the wolves.

The key I found
is people always want to do...

And honestly,
it's a thing when humans howl,

wolves out there
sometimes howl back

or at least become curious
and come check it out.

Research indicates wolves have
an uncanny ability

to differentiate
the frequency modulation
in each other's howls.

Howl will serve
a variety of purposes.

They can communicate location
to other pack members,

act as a rally call
for hunting,

and even ward off rivals
from a pack's territory.

Howls can be heard
by other wolves
up to seven miles away.

And even human howls can get
the occasional response.

Just north of Reed City,
you have the Miller Airport.

They call that place
Dogman Hotel.

-[Phil] Oh.
-[Heather whispering] I think
I just saw something.

Heather, get back here.

The way I see it,
even if they're not

howling back now,
the message is sent.

So now we just wait.

Well, at this point,
we have eyes down low.

Now we need
to get eyes up high.

What do you mean?

How are you with heights?

The meadow's
best vantage point

is up high
in one of the perimeter trees.

From there, we'd be able
to see any predators

tempted by our howls
or the promise of prey.

So we set up a ladder stand,

extending it
as high as possible,
next to a sturdy pine,

giving us a perch
of around 20 feet.

Looks good. Looks great.

Okay, from up there,

you keep eyes on the meadow

and I'll go around
the perimeter,
keep eyes on the forest.

-All right, I got your back.
-Okay.

Wolves are not strictly
nocturnal creatures,

but any apex predators
out here will prefer to hunt

under the cloak of darkness.

-The plan is to wait
for nightfall.
-[Heather] Okay.

[Phil] Heather will use
the FLIR
from the ladder stand,

and look
for any heat signatures
in the meadow.

I'll be on foot, patrolling
the surrounding woods

with the night vision
binoculars.

It's deathly quiet out here.

So now that it's nightfall,
this is when the activity
should be picking up.

Right now,
I'm looking for eyeshine.

I'm looking for
any disturbed ground,

essentially, just any sign
of who might be living
out here.

It is really creepy...

being out here by myself.

That was a loud
knocking noise.

It came
from somewhere over here.

a loud knock.

I haven't gotten anything

and if I howl,
my sound will travel
a lot further in this area

and maybe we'll get

It seems like our howling
might have worked.

[Heather] It definitely
feels that way.

to be certain about the size
of the creature capture

on the thermal imager,
but its speed is undeniable.

Unfortunately, that would be
our last glimpse
of any wildlife.

Our trail for dogman goes cold
for the rest of the night.

The next day,
Phil and I decided

to split up
and gather more intel...

while he tracks down
another possible eyewitness...

[Heather] ...I meet up
with a self-professed
dogman expert.

Nice to meet you.

[Heather] John Bell
is both an army vet
and retired law enforcement.

He spent years researching
the dogman phenomenon

and its supposed links
to our government
and military.

[John] One thing
you have to understand is that

this comes into a kind
of a new science
of cryptozoology.

Basically, for layman's term,
it's things
that shouldn't exist

that there's evidence
that they possibly do.

Mm-hmm.

[John] Now,
when it comes to dogman,

everyone's got
a different theory.

And my theory from my study
and my research,

the dogman,
it depends on the age,

but an adult male
will be anywhere

from eight to nine feet tall,

most commonly reported.

They have hands that look like
raccoon-looking hands,

with nails at the end.

They have the ability
to run on all fours,
but also on two legs.

They can run over 50 miles
an hour.

They have very large mouths.

And the most common eyeshine
that people report

is an amber, yellow or red.

At some point in time,
the military discovered
these things,

and they started
to weaponize them
in a super soldier program.

So there are
eyewitness accounts
of these super soldiers?

-Oh, yes.
-Wow.

Have any of these things
been deployed in conflict?

Absolutely. There's been
lots of reports

about them being deployed
in operations in Syria,

ss well as operations
in the Middle East.

Interesting. I haven't found
any evidence of that.

With my background,
I've got connections

to sources that a lot
of other people don't have.

And it's difficult telling you
which they said
because it's classified.

So how many dogmen
do you think are potentially
out in the woods of Michigan?

Hundreds. I would
only be speculating, you know.

[Phil] But how far away
were you from it
when you saw it?

I want to say, probably,
probably 30 feet.

[Phil] Jake Shetenhelm
is a local hunter and trapper

who says he's had
a recent dogman sighting
not far from this stream.

My friend had come over
and he knew
that I'd been trapping,

so he wanted to see
what that was all about.

And we go to check the traps.

As soon as we got close
to the farthest trap away,

-we heard a branch snap.
-[branch snaps]

And it's when
we saw this thing.

It was a silhouette at first,
and it was huge

with golden amber eyes, tall,
a German Shepherd-like ears.

And after it takes
a few steps towards us,
it stands up.

It already looked massive.

But this thing must have been
seven foot plus.

[Phil] That is giant.

And you were watching
this thing walk towards you?

Yeah. My muscles
weren't listening to my brain.

My friend,

he was all ass and elbows
back to the house.

That should only exist
in nightmares.

The next morning,
my friend and I went out there
and we found the tracks.

And they were dog prints,
but they were bigger
than my hand.

-That's huge.
-Yeah.

Wolf tracks
can be very, very big.

I mean, they can be
about that big,

but you're saying
it was bigger than that.

It was much bigger than that.

Interesting.

Before this incident,
what did you think
of the dogman?

I thought it was a legend.

I thought it was a scary story
to tell around the campfire,
tell your friends.

But your eyes can't lie
that much
when two people see it.

It's not something
that should exist in nature.

It's a nightmare
that's come true.

Okay. I'm looking for dogman.

Where do I go?

Well, first of all,
you shouldn't be looking for.
That's my best advice.

But you should be looking
in rural areas

or areas connected
to the DNR are specifically.

Department
of Natural Resources.

You want to look
for very strange structures
out in the wilderness,

things that are completely
out of place
and don't belong there.

For example,
just north of Reed City.

you have the Miller Airport.

Miller Airport
is a huge facility.

Reed City is a very small town
with a very small population.

It just doesn't make sense.

-That's strange.
-It's very strange.

And it has a history
of military involvement

in operations
that have taken place there.

And it's right on the border
of DNR property.

So all of that makes it
an extreme hotspot.

I talked to a source of mine
who told me

that they call that place
Dogman Hotel.

[Heather] After learning
about Miller Airport,
I researched its location.

It sits on the outskirts
of Manistee National Forest,

about two miles north
of Reed City.

The airport
was built in the '50s

by a local manufacturer,
Miller Industries.

Its huge size
far exceeding the needs
of the small local population.

And strangely,
there are very few flights

ever recorded
as taking off
from the facility.

And it now appears
to have been
completely abandoned.

Stranger still,
locals report seeing

a military presence here
on multiple occasions.

There is no public information
on what they were doing here,

which only fuels
the conspiracy theories.

With John Bell's warnings
ringing in my ears,

I convinced Phil, we have
to check out Miller Airport.

-[Phil] Here we go.
-[Heather] Whoa!

-[Phil] You can't miss that.
-Dogman Hotel.

This facility is located
around two miles away

from Jake's supposed
dogman encounter

and roughly 15 miles
from Joe's.

Whatever it was
that our eyewitnesses saw,

it could easily call
this place home.

Is the idea here then
that this airport

is or was a front
for some sort
of dogman training facility?

[Heather] That's exactly
what he thinks.

it matches the description.

searched the woods
until sunrise

on the hunt
for the source of the howl.

But whatever it was,
it disappeared into the night.

Our search for the dogman
proved to be
an unforgettable investigation

as much
for what we didn't find
as what we did.

Phil and Heather analyzed
the bizarre shriek
they recorded

in the Manistee
National Forest.

What the [bleep] is that?

[Josh] It was canine.

But far
from being extraordinary,

-it was something every day.
- [shrieking]

The howl
of the very common
Michigan gray fox.

[Phil] Oh, my God,
it smells terrible.

[Josh] Phil sent out
a sample of the urine

he discovered nearby
for further analysis.

That looks fresh.

[Josh] While the results
revealed it came
from a canine,

the type of canine
was inconclusive.

Another gray fox
or something more significant.

We can't be sure.

[Josh] However, the paw print
the team discovered
at the abandoned airport

led to more questions
than answers.

It matches a wolf print.

But one that's supersized.

Phil argues it could be
a normal wolf print

that simply appears bigger
due to displacement
in the mud.

Heather is not so sure.

And the trail camera
Phil set up nearby

did not capture any activity
around the deer carcass.

at the airport stayed gone.

of the airport itself
is a strange one.

A detailed examination
of company records

show the vast facility
was built in 1956

by wealthy industrialist
Jim Miller.

It was then sold in 1979
to the Nartron Corporation,

who said their business

was supplying electronics
to automotive
and military suppliers.

no evidence to support that.

across all branches

that appears to relate

to any kind
of a dogman project.

And far from acting like
they had something to hide,

the local
and federal authorities

were extremely helpful
to our team,

to investigate

in Michigan's state
and national forests.

So is there
an undiscovered creature
roaming Michigan's wilderness?

It's possible.
