the tortured and the torturer

are said to haunt its halls.

it almost looks like
a suit of armor.

Exactly.

That's what people
think they're seeing.

A figure in a suit of armor.

But here's the thing.

There was no one there.

And this picture was taken

at supposedly
the most haunted castle
in all of England.

Chillingham.

Seriously, a haunted castle
and it's called Chillingham?

[laughs] I know, I know,
that tracks, right?

The spelling has evolved
over the years,

but the chilling part
goes way back.

Something tells me
this castle doesn't have
the most charming history.

No, hell, no.

This place will make
even George R.R. Martin blush.

It has centuries worth of war,
murder, torture, you name it.

It's been
in the owner's family
for over 800 years,

and they're convinced
it's haunted.

They're the ones
that sent me this picture.

So, Chillingham,
I know this place.

It really has
an incredible history.

Some of the very worst
tortures imaginable

were said to be invented
at Chillingham.

Supposedly,

this is one of the most
blood-soaked castles
in all of Britain.

Four thousand castles
still stand

in the United Kingdom.

But when it comes
to violence, horror,

and potential
paranormal activity,

nothing comes close
to Chillingham.

Located in the wilderness
of northern England

on the border
with historic rival Scotland,

Chillingham castle was built
in the 13th century

by the noble Grey family

on the site
of a former monastery.

In 1286,

the death of Scotland's king
Alexander III,

triggers a succession crisis
as he had no direct heirs.

England's king, Edward,
seeks to exploit
Alexander's death

by establishing himself
as Scotland's monarch.

Scotland resists
the English king,

igniting the war
of Scottish Independence
in 1296.

Chillingham is on
the front line,

becoming the base
of operations for Edward

during the long
and bloody campaign
against the Scots

who are led
by William Wallace,

better known as Braveheart.

[man shouts]
Death to the false king
of Scotland!

[Josh] Many of the Scottish
soldiers captured

end up
in the castle's dungeons.

But they may have wished
they died on the battlefield.

A man named John Sage

is said to have been appointed
chief interrogator.

[soldier screams]

[Josh] He reportedly kills
50 people a week,

torturing his victims
with horrific innovations.

Like the Rack
and the Iron Maiden,

a metal coffin
lined with spikes,

which was closed
while the victim
was still alive.

Thousands die at Chillingham,

tortured, burned alive
or starved to death

in the dungeon's
most dreaded chamber
known as the oubliette.

Ultimately, king Edward
fails to subdue the Scots.

Skirmishes continue
for centuries,

and Chillingham remains
on the bloody front line.

It's no surprise

that reports
of paranormal activity
eventually emerge.

The first written accounts
of Chillingham's ghosts

appear in a pamphlet
published in 1925

by Lady Leonora Tankerville.

She becomes so fearful
of the paranormal,

that she seeks the services

of notorious
Victorian occultist
Aleister Crowley.

Crowley travels to Chillingham

and reportedly
conducts rituals

that some believe
cause something sinister

to slip through
from the netherworld.

Today,
visitors routinely report

terrifying encounters
inside Chillingham.

Full body apparitions,

including regular reports
of a mysterious Blue Boy,

horrifying, disturbing voices.

And worst of all,

people say they are attacked
by violent poltergeists.

The property's current owner,
Sir Humphry Wakefield,

is convinced his castle
is haunted

and that the activity
is only getting worse.

Do the walls of Chillingham
still hold the souls of those
that suffered here?

A violent history
spanning centuries,
stunning evidence,

and the Godfather
of the occult himself,
Mr. Aleister Crowley

believes this place is legit?

Come on now,
we have to investigate.

Crowley certainly
took his paranormal research
seriously.

If he thought Chillingham
was worth his time,

it could certainly
be worth hours.

ghostly encounters

are based on this history

From there,

drive an hour south
to Chillingham,

crossing the border

Wow, this countryside

But remember,

that all of that beauty hides
some really sinister history.

Oh, boy, you about to ruin
this nice, lovely road trip
for us?

-I'm gonna bring you
right back down to earth.

this is actually the site

of the battle of Flodden field
in 1513.

And that's where
10,000 Scotsman died

and 4000 Englishmen died
all in one day.

-Fourteen thousand people
in a single day.
-Yeah.

[Phil] That is a lot of death.

Whoo! There it is.

-Oh, my goodness.
-Whoa! [laughs]

[Phil] This is like
a storybook castle.

Only this is
a much darker story.

of Chillingham Castle

he continues to preserve
the castle's legacy

and has opened its grounds

This is the Great Hall.

[Heather] This castle's
been in your wife's family
for 800 years?

That's right, yes.

When did you first learn

that this castle
might be haunted?

When I first came here...

I said, "Fine, please do."

He came and said
there were too many ghosts,

he couldn't deal with them.

-So, Sir Humphry,
given the history here...

...given what it seems
like a lot of people
have experienced here,

do you think
this place is haunted?

Too many unlikely things
have happened.

[Phil]
With Sir Humphry's words
echoing in our ears,

he directs us
to meet his castle historian,
Richard Craig.

[Heather] Richard,
nice to see you.

[Phil] Richard is an expert

on Chillingham's
millennia-spanning history

and its bloodcurdling
hauntings.

This is
the king Edward I Room.

There's a lot of castles
across the UK.

-A lot of them
claim to be haunted.
-Mmm-hmm.

What is it about this place

that you think makes it
stand out the most?

[Richard] During the first
Scottish War of Independence,

it's estimated that some
7500 poor souls

were brought here
to be subjected and tortured.

[Heather]
Seven and a half thousand
were tortured in this castle?

[Richard] Mmm-hmm.

There's no bloody history
in this castle
without John Sage.

He was the torturer
of the castle,

appointed by Edward the first

to try and find information
relating to William Wallace.

[Phil] How would he
interrogate people?

They'd be taken
to the torture chamber,

subject to hot irons.

It would escalate
to the most feared device
in the torture chamber.

The Rack.

People would be roped
into the Rack

and then stretched
ever so slowly

until joints began to pop.

[soldier screams]

Oh, my God.

Bones began to break.

Still alive, of course.

Other ones would be thrown
in the oubliette.

What's the oubliette?

The oubliette
is basically a hole

in the floor of the dungeon

with quite a significant drop.

That was end of the road.

Because oubliette
comes from the French word
oublier,

which means to forget.

And that's what would happen.

This room where we're standing

is also known
as the killing room.

-We're standing
in the killing room?
-[Richard] Yes.

John Sage was burning people
in the courtyard at the stake.

He assembled the children
of these people in here

to watch their parents
being burned.

-Did someone kill him?
-That...

Yes.

Good.

He met a very sticky end.

John Sage's wife
died by his hand.

He strangled her.

And consequently,

he was hung, drawn
and then quartered.

And it is said
that his ghost haunts
this castle.

It's a very violent presence.

Just last weekend,

we were moving through
the Great Hall in a group.

Suddenly,
one girl was thrown bodily
to the floor.

And I was bodily thrown
against the wall.

[Heather]
Physically thrown around.

It was very violent
and there was blood.

John Sage was out for blood,
and he got it.

What makes you think
it was John Sage?

Because we were provoking him.

-If we were to try
to provoke him...
-[Richard] Mmm-hmm?

...what would we do?

Go down the route of,

"Everybody said
you were a monster.

Prove this to us."

And then see where that goes.

This place is like
nothing else on Earth.

Chillingham is the holy grail
of paranormal activity.

Believe me.

With over 30,000 square feet
of castle to investigate,

Heather and I get to work
setting up cameras
in the most active rooms.

First up,
the king Edward Room,

also known as
the killing room,

where visitors have reported
shadow figures

and objects
moving on their own.

As well as the dungeon,

where Richard tells us
the disembodied wailing

of John Sage's prisoners
can still be heard.

We set up a camera
in the Pink Room,

reportedly the castle's
most haunted bedroom,

where the ghost
of a little boy

is said to appear
as a blue orb.

And we make sure to monitor
the castle's chapel,

where Aleister Crowley
was rumored

to have performed
occult rituals

and some even say

opened a portal
to another dimension.

Lastly, we position a camera
at the Great Hall...

...where Richard says
he and his guests recently had

their violent encounter
with John Sage.

we head to the Great Hall

to investigate reports

of the bloodthirsty ghost

so many artifacts,

each could have
its own residual energy.

It's like they're all
staring at you.

this is where Richard said
a violent attack happened.

[Phil] He said he was in front
of the fireplace.

[Heather] I wanna do a call

people actually got physically

Richard said happened
to that group of people.

on his many victims.

we can actually dig.

If we can find some clues
that tell us what happened

I'm wondering
if that is some sort
of drainage channel.

So, artifacts,
any organic matter,

into this pit

if you didn't have
a proper burial,

you wouldn't go on
to the afterlife.

They would be trapped here.

and I head upstairs

to the castle bedrooms,

but our night's investigation
is far from over.

-[Phil] Okay.
-While Phil will be staying

in the infamous
King Edward room,

I'll be taking the pink room,

which Richard claims is
the most haunted bedroom

in the castle,

for a ghastly reason.

In 1920,

workmen were breaking
through the wall.

They came across
the bones of a child.

People staying
in the room are woken up

in the middle of the night

by a child
with a blue aura around him.

[Heather] In case
the boy's spirit wants

to make his presence known
while I sleep,

I set up several
toy-like trigger objects
around me.

A motion-detecting music box
and cat balls,

which will light up
if touched.

Toss them on this bed.

Okay, Heather,
I'm ready to pass out.

Holler if you need me.

Yeah, will do.

[Phil exhales]

[Heather] Now you can see

when I roll over,

that music box does
not go off.

Got the sensor pointing out,

so it will only go off

if there's movement
in the other direction.

and that's not going off.

[Phil] Are you kidding me?

No. And it was non-stop.

[Phil] So you think...

I mean, at this point,

I think I'm just going
to stay up until morning.

[Phil] We still have
a lot more investigating

a mostly sleepless night,

we decide to broaden
our search

beyond Chillingham's walls

to its 150 acres of grounds.

[engine starts]

[Heather] And to get
to where we're going,

we need a little help.

All right. I'm going
to go meet

-another witness
in the forest.

And I've identified an area

where I might be able to find
the evidence I'm looking for.

-All right. Have fun.

[Heather] My witness has
asked to meet me

at a very specific location,

a thick grove of tangled trees

on the southern end
of the castle grounds.

-Mark.
-[Mark] Hi, Heather.

Thanks so much
for meeting with me.

Mark Trotter is
a former police officer

who now gives tours
on Chillingham's history.

He's had
several strange encounters
on its grounds

that he can't explain.

Why did you want
to meet me here?

This is one of the most
haunted places

in the grounds
of Chillingham Castle.

I think it's all to do
with all the battles

that have been here.

This field behind us was where
most of the battles took place

back in the medieval period.

This was the best way
to attack the castle.

And of course,
you have to remember also

that all these trees would
be used

to hang Scottish prisoners.

Hang people?

[man grunts]

[Mark] Yes,
and the other thing,

they never used
to cut them down,

because they believed

that if they didn't get
a Christian burial,

then their soul would wander
the earth for eternity.

So they would allow them
to rot and drop to the ground.

We've had heavy rainfalls

and little bits of bone have
come up

of people who've just been
left where they've fallen.

There could be bones lying
in the ground

right there behind me.

Absolutely.

And also, you know,

we talk at great length
about the medieval period.

[Mark speaking]

So the history
and the violence goes back

much further
than the medieval period.

People have lived
and died here for 6,000 years.

[Phil] I've decided to search
the castle's perimeter,

just outside
its defensive walls,

where many battles
reportedly took place.

Armed with
my trusty metal detector,

I'm hoping to find relics

that confirm
Chillingham's dark history.

[metal detector chirps]

Okay, might have got
something here.

Let's see.

Okay, okay, what have we got?

[tense music playing]

Okay.

Yeah, looks like
a square nail.

It's old.

But does it indicate violence?

Not necessarily.

Let's keep looking.

[Heather] So what about
this area right here?

Has there been any activity
in this area?

People have seen
shadowy images,

figures even.

People have heard things.

I did a tour one evening,

and there was
a gentleman stood next to me.

We're in the pitch dark.

All of a sudden,
he just took off running

into the darkness,

and he ran into a tree
and knocked himself out.

He ran head first into a tree?

He did.

And when he came around,

I've never seen
anyone so frightened.

He told me
that he'd heard a voice

in his ear saying, "Hello".

Did anyone else hear it?

No, no. Nobody else heard it,
just him.

I was stood right next to him.

I never heard a thing.

So someone or something is
trying to get your attention.

That's it. They are trying
to get your attention.

When I first came
to Chillingham,

I wasn't interested
in spirits or ghosts.

I thought it was
a load of rubbish.

But since then,
I've been here for nine years.

I've had
an awful lot of experiences

in these grounds.

There's no doubt in my mind

that spirits are amongst us.

So Chillingham made you
a believer?

Absolutely.

purported to be
the most haunted location

on the castle grounds.

an idea

on how I might debunk it.

to their shared fascination

with the occult.

to have partnered

with British
intelligence operative
Ian Fleming

of James Bond fame.

Crowley's drink of choice was

one of the strongest spirits
in the world,

by an historic artifact,

I want to use
a paranormal device

specifically designed to scan
trigger objects.

The TDT can also detect
environmental anomalies

and can translate
EMF disturbances into words.

and scan the sword

and this room in general

and just see if we get
any hits.

to determine any reason

for it to fall
at the moment it did.

how that could have happened.

of the wall-mounted sword

in King Edward's room...

a lot of force

the sword does seem
to impossibly move

of its own accord.

Phil believes that it could be

some kind of digital glitch
in the footage,

but admits
he's never encountered

anything like it before.

of the horrifying things
we saw

and heard were disputable...

of the bone

found in the oubliette...

a forensic anthropologist,

and they confirmed
it appeared human.

But most shocking of all was
the lead object

Phil discovered
near the castle.

We got something.

Physics Laboratory

for detailed analysis.

And their findings
were stunning.

The object was dated to be
at least medieval

and likely older.

Even more remarkable,

x-ray imaging indicated

writing hidden
within the object.

It is believed
what Phil discovered is

a Roman curse scroll.

The Romans would forge objects
containing curses

aimed at their enemies.

They would then bury them,

bringing misfortune
to the place and its people.

Could this object explain

Chillingham's disturbing
paranormal activity?

Unquestionably, it is a find

of great
archaeological significance,

as well as being perhaps

the most unsettling artifacts
we've ever found.
