I join my team in the field, to investigate arguably

the most haunted building in America.

[Josh] But this year my team looks a little different.

[Phil] Little bit further.

-[Phil] Are you sure you want to go down there? -[Heather] Absolutely.

-[Phil] You're go in first. -See you at the bottom.

[Josh] Field biologist Phil Torres is joined by Heather Amaro.

A third generation paranormal researcher.

Who are you?

[huffing voice]

[Josh] Who's two decades spent investigating

the unexplained have made her a true believer.

We've got some big questions to answer

and a lot of digging to do.

is the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum.

Where reported paranormal activity is off the charts.

And as I head towards it,

the shadow swoops towards me.

[Josh] In life, This abandoned psychiatric hospital

was infamous for its cruel treatments.

Takes a ice-pick to work

-and performed that very first ice pick lobotomy. -[Josh] Wow.

in its horrifying halls in death.

I have been fascinated with the paranormal my entire life,

and I'm a third generation investigator.

So joining y'all is like a dream come true.

You know what you're getting yourself into?

In fact, to commemorate you joining our merry band of investigators,

I have arranged something truly special for you to investigate.

The Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum.

Oh, heck, yeah.

I take it you know this place.

I wouldn't be a very good paranormal investigator if I didn't.

Trans-Allegheny is one of the most iconic

haunted locations in the world.

Arguably the most iconic.

This is a a former psychiatric hospital

whose terrible past is said to actively haunt its present.

And they've just reached out to us with exclusive access.

For us to investigate where no team has gone before.

[Josh] Deep in the wilderness of West Virginia,

the monstrous Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum

stands abandoned,

A horrifying reminder of the evils

of early American medicine.

Construction begins in 1858.

But as the Civil War inflames America,

the asylum's construction cools to a halt.

The building's half formed husk is battled over

by Union and Confederate forces.

When the dust settles,

the vast gothic asylum

begins admitting patients in 1864.

To this day, it is one of the largest

hand cut stone buildings in North America.

But by the 1950s, a place of healing and hope

becomes one of horror

due to its controversial and often deadly treatments.

Electroshock therapy, hydrotherapy,

insulin induced comas and lobotomies.

Dr. Walter Freeman,

armed with nothing more than an ice pick and a hammer.

Makes Trans-Allegheny his home.

The patients themselves also become more sinister.

As Trans-Allegheny begins admitting

criminally insane murderers.

[distant screaming]

[Josh] In 1994, the facility shuts its doors,

but not before an estimated 20,000 people die here.

After new owners purchased the asylum

in 2007, they reopened it as a museum.

But as soon as they do, visitors begin to see

and hear things that shake them to their core.

Witnesses have reported

-disembodied voices. -[sinister laugh]

[Josh] Doors slamming...

-objects thrown... -[crashing]

[Josh] ...and full body apparitions.

Today, the main building is a mecca

for paranormal investigators.

But there are many other recently

unsealed structures on the property.

Where activity is now said to be spiking,

including the criminally insane building,

and the medical center

Recent reports range from people

getting physically attacked by unseen forces

to sightings of mysterious shadow figures.

These buildings have never been fully

investigated by paranormal teams before.

by the staff over at Trans-Allegheny.

And it was captured in the old medical center.

This was recorded inside the medical building,

and they say nobody else was around.

But look, whatever this is, between the recording and the other recent reports.

I think we have to investigate.

This is a truly iconic location.

Last year, we investigated

another of these infamous asylums.

Eloise in Detroit.

And we came back with some astounding evidence.

That was a night I will never forget.

And yet Trans-Allegheny here is even larger.

And reportedly more active

and more terrifying than Eloise.

This is going to be an incredible place

for us to investigate.

So he sees an invisible spirit

But it's not set in an Asylum.

They're trying to commit him the whole time

I don't know if I've ever seen a movie about an asylum guys.

Watching nature documentaries.

I don't know how much you know about bees, Heather,

but you're about to be a world class expert.

Oh, fantastic.

Did you guys know how many species

of native bees West Virginia has?

-No. -No, Phil.

-At least a100. -Wow.

There's leaf cutter bees.

-There's minor bees. -[Heather sighs]

Mason bees. There's even sweat bees here.

Of course, we've got bumble bees,

and those are just major families.

We have solitary bees.

Also known as Phil at his senior prom.

She was a good friend of mine.

[Josh] This place has a population of, like

-under 4000 people today. -[Phil] Wow.

[Josh] But my understanding is it pretty much grew up around the asylum.

And there it is.

It is huge.

I mean, it's like, as far as you can see.

We're here to meet with our contacts.

We find them waiting in the asylum's impeccably restored front lobby.

[Josh] Jess and Zachary have spent 17 years

at Trans-Allegheny between them.

They are two of the foremost authorities

on the location's dark past.

And paranormal present.

This is one of our fully restored boards.

There's not much of that throughout here.

It doesn't all look like this.

-No, no. -[chuckles]

[Zachary] A lot of it is left in that decrepit state.

Okay, so easy simple question.

-Is it haunted? -Oh, yeah.

I mean, you didn't even hesitate.

[laughs] No.

-It's haunted. -Yes.

What kind of activity are we talking about?

[Jess] Shadow figures.

Disembodied voices.

[Zachary] Full body apparitions.

-E.V. P. -Doppelgangers.

Doppelgangers?

Yes.

Literally, what? You think you see yourself

or someone you know?

How does that work?

I've seen the other tour guides

that wasn't even around

even seen a guest that wasn't even there.

I've been seen twice in the past year.

In places that you were not.

I was not there at the time.

I was in a totally different building.

I've actually never ran into doppelganger,

so I'm pretty excited about that.

like how many buildings are here today.

[Zachary] So we still have 13 standing.

-Naturally. -Of course. 13 buildings

And would you say that those outlying buildings

have a lot of activity in them?

I believe so.

Yeah. We've just started exploring outbuildings

and us being out there so much more.

The activity is really starting to kick up.

Which buildings are we talking about?

-Why don't we go show you. -Please?

[Josh] To get a better sense of the hospital's sprawling campus.

Jess and Zachary lead us outside to a large lawn

surrounded on all sides

by additional asylum buildings.

It's incredible how many buildings

are hiding back here.

[Zachary] And behind these buildings.

That's where the farm was that we still own

over 300 acers of the original land.

All right. I got to say, that is not the prettiest building back there.

-[Phil] Yeah. -[Josh] But so start here. What is this?

The in criminally insane unit.

The worst of the worst

were housed within that building.

You're talking serial killers,

murders, rapists, all within that building.

Wow. So the most dangerous patients--

The most.

And what sort of activity is reported in there.

[Jess] We have footsteps.

-We have disembodied voices. -[woman laughing]

[Jess] Shadow figures.

Whenever you're going to unlock the building or lock up the building,

you'll hear banging from the windows

that somebody's trying to get out.

Wow. Okay, so where else don't you want to be alone in?

The medical center.

-[Josh] The building on the far end? -[Jess] Yes.

-[Josh] Okay. -Why?

[Zachary] So the medical building was built to pretty much

be the hospital for the hospital.

-[Josh] Hmm. -[Phil] What kind of procedures happened

in the medical center?

The insulin shock therapies, the lobotomies

would have been the main procedures there.

And there was a notorious

doctor here who did those lobotomies, right?

Yes. That would be Dr. Walter Freeman.

So his main room would have been within that first floor,

where he performed his ice pick lobotomies.

[Heather] Ice pick?

[Zachary] That's correct.

He went into his kitchen one day,

opened up a drawer,

takes an ice pick to work

and performed that very first ice pick lobotomy.

[Josh] What was the death rate

on those ice pick lobotomy here?

[Zachary] Fourteen percent I do believe.

[Josh exclaiming in horror]

And also, on that first floor is the morgue.

So if you died here,

you ended up on that first floor.

So thousands of bodies have passed through there.

[Josh] Wow.

Okay, so what kind of things are reported in there?

We have a shadow figure on the first floor

that we nicknamed "The Doctor."

Because he does pace back and forth

from where the procedure rooms is,

up and down the hallway.

People have seen this shadow?

-Mmm-hmm. Multiple times. -Okay.

We also have a spirit that we call "Joker."

He is mischievous.

He's known to make equipment malfunction.

Multiple people have seen him, like peeking his head around the door,

looking at you.

And have either of the two of you

-ever had experiences in there? -Yes

Probably the most terrifying encounters

that we have had on the property.

Would you mind showing us where it happened?

-Let's go. -Yeah. Come on.

Wow.

Welcome to the third floor.

This area would have been the patient rooms

for any patients that was in here for procedures.

This is where the scream happened.

The one you sent us?

Yes.

So take us through this event

because it is this, like, bloodcurdling noise.

-So... -Yes.

How many of you were here in the building that night?

There was a total of seven of us.

Six of us was down in the morgue.

On the first floor.

And one decided he wanted to walk all the floors by himself.

About three or four doors down

is whenever he heard this blood curling scream.

[screaming]

[man] What the... [bleep]

Did you hear the scream where you were?

[Jess] Yes. All six of us heard it.

While we were down on the first floor in the morgue.

I see him run down the hall and ran outside.

I went out to check on him.

I asked him what happened.

He was shaking so bad, I had to get the recorder

from him to play back what he just heard.

So he was terrified.

He was terrified.

And what about your experience, Zachary?

Where was that?

If it was up in the attic.

Let's see it.

[Zachary] I was up here exploring with another

tour guide from the asylum and a couple of his friends.

So we were all in this area.

First, it started with some noises,

so I heard a couple of footsteps.

As I hear these footsteps,

that's when I started seeing a shadow

blocking out the window at the end of the hall.

And as I head towards it,

the shadow swoops towards me.

[intense music playing]

And the shadow went over you, went into you?

What did it do?

It came up to me and then dissipated.

Did it make any noise?

-[Zachary] It did not. -Silent.

Silent.

What do you think it was?

[sighs] I would say that it was an intelligent style hunt

something that's here and able to interact with us.

[Josh] With two extraordinary eyewitness accounts

featuring a disembodied scream

and a mysterious shadow figure.

We're going to start our investigation

in the medical center.

[Phil] All right, we've got power.

So camera time.

We set up our command center on the first floor

and established surveillance on the reported hot spots.

Including the attic where the shadow figure was seen.

The third floor hallway where the scream was heard

and where people have reported a spirit

known as the Joker

and the surgical suite.

Where the ice pick lobotomies took place.

And where the ghost known as The Doctor

has been encountered.

I would swear I saw somebody down there.

Up on the third floor and then watch this.

So right there, we're already getting some weird IR change.

[Heather] It looks like a figure crouching

There is like a dark splotch

in the hallway, some sort of mask.

And this is also right where that scream was recorded.

I mean, this is already a hot spot.

That's why we put a camera there.

We got a nice view down the hall.

It's like it walked down the hall.

[Phil] It's like a growl.

[Heather] There is no one else in here with us.

It was like whatever it was, it got closer and closer.

And then suddenly...

...It was behind us.

Behind us, like a noise.

-Guys, I don't like this. Okay? -[Heather shivering]

[Phil] You know, I got goose bumps.

[Phil] Oh, my God.

Which end of the hallway are you at?

[whispering] Let's walk back down.

So okay, back to our REM pods here.

[Phil] Yeah.

[Heather] And because we've heard something

and because of the scream heard here,

we've got to do an audio recording.

For sure, we should leave equipment here for sure to record audio.

This is a real vintage microphone.

[Josh] Wow.

[Heather] I brought with me an old mid-century microphone.

The kind that patients here might have been familiar with.

My hope is that it may help encourage

any lingering spirits to reach out and make contact.

[snaps fingers] Right.

Microphone is hot. Audio is recording.

[Josh] Okay, so maybe we hear that noise again.

In the meantime, we got a lot more building to investigate, yeah.

-Yeah. -Okay. Come on.

We head up to the attic where Zachary had his disturbing encounter

with what he believes was a ghostly shadow figure.

Okay, this is, uh,

-this is a lot scarier at night. -[Phil] Oh, yeah.

Look, now that we're up here in the dark,

you really can see where Zachary was talking about seeing the shadow.

It's just ink black down there. You can't see anything.

So on one hand, you can totally imagine

how somebody sees a shadow in all that murk.

On the other hand, how does he see anything at all?

[Phil] Yeah. I mean, there's a window down there. There's a window over here.

-Let's say it's a full moon that night. -[Josh] Right.

[Phil] Then, if something were down there,

then he would be able to see some sort of shadow.

-But it doesn't explain it moving towards him. -[Josh] And shadow of what?

That's the big question.

Even if there is ambient light, what's he seeing?

The Joker?

So if he did see something ghostly down there,

let's see if we can coax it out.

-I like that idea. With the SLS. -Yeah.

-[Phil] Okay. -Sure. SLS camera.

Let's see what it picks up down there.

[Heather] SLS is powered up.

[Josh] So let's see what it sees down here.

Let's shine that right down where Zachary was looking. [whispers] Right down there.

[in normal voice] And whatever is up here, some people have claimed,

is this entity known as the Joker, right?

This is the... This is the ghost

that's supposed to mess with your equipment in the building.

-Did you see it? It detected a person right here. -Yes.

So we were just talking about the Joker.

We saw something on our camera here just a moment ago.

Did we just get messed with by the Joker?

-[exhales sharply] -Evidence of the Joker?

It's not a pattern yet. It's a single device.

Well, that brings us back to our initial question.

What did this guy Zachary see?

I don't know, but... Come on, you know what I'm gonna say.

I... I don't. It's gonna be nerdy.

What is something that could make a dark shadow over there and fly right over you?

[together] Ghosts.

-[Phil] You guys. -Right? Is that... was that the right answer?

-Obviously. -[Josh] What... What are you gonna say?

I'm just saying there's... I've already seen some raccoon poop around here.

-It could be... -A flying raccoon?

-[Phil] No. It could be-- -Like Super Mario?

It could be a bird. It could be bats up here.

-[Josh] An animal? Okay. -An animal.

[Josh] We do see droppings up on the rafters.

But if some pigeon was up here, wouldn't you hear that flying toward you?

Yeah, I suppose you would.

But, you know, I'm gonna keep looking around

-for evidence of something. -[Josh] Okay.

[Phil whispering] All right. What do we got back here?

Yeah, it's open up there.

[in normal voice] Oh! I got something good.

Let me get some gloves on.

-So... -[Josh] What'd you find?

...if this is what I think it is...

-Did you guys see it? -[Josh] I don't.

-I see a filthy fireplace. -[Phil] Exactly.

A filthy fireplace full of biological treasure. Look, look.

So do you see those? Those white spots.

-[Josh] This light stuff here? Yeah. -[Phil] Yep.

Those are mouse bones which means this is an owl pellet.

So this is what an owl regurgitates

-as it is digesting a mouse. -Right.

So this tells us for sure we've got owls up in here.

Oh, yeah. When owls fly, they fly silently.

So an owl coming at you under the right light

could seem like a shadow coming right at you.

[Josh] Okay, well,

-let's see what else is going on in this building. -[Phil] Okay.

[Josh] After Phil's possible debunk,

we make our way down to the first floor

to investigate the asylum's morgue and surgical suite.

In addition to the alleged Joker entity said to lurk here,

staff also report a shadow figure known as the Doctor.

In addition to the morgue, the first floor is also

where infamous doctor, Walter Freeman

brutally lobotomized countless patients with an ice pick.

The morgue is somewhere around here, right?

-[Heather] Morgue. -[Josh] This is the morgue. What is this?

-Oh, is this the body freezer? -[Heather] Yes.

[Josh] Look at this.

-[Phil speaks indistinctly] -[Heather] Try and pull it out. Yeah.

I mean, just think how many hundreds of bodies were on these slabs?

[Heather] Thousands.

The other thing is, it's so cold in here that literally...

Okay, so this is the surgical room.

So this is where those lobotomies happened. Right in here.

I mean, yeah, with an ice pick.

I think we should try to reconstruct the surgical suite.

-Like a trigger? -Exactly.

-And maybe we'll get something in response. -Let's see what it does.

So I know this isn't an operating table, but we can double as one.

because there may be some residual energy tied to these pieces.

[whispering] That was a scream, for sure. That was not in here.

And that... What is that? That's the criminally insane building.

-They're all just staring at us. -A dozen deer.

Yeah, but that could not have been a deer that made that noise.

-Absolutely not. -Deer can make some squeals,

That was not an animal. That was a scream.

[Heather] That was a woman's scream.

[Josh] So criminally insane building or the woods.

I say criminally insane building.

[Phil] You know, I'm gonna say woods.

-You wanna look in the woods? -I'll take the woods.

35 miles from Trans-Allegheny, is the town of Philippi,

home to a macabre display that's fascinated visitors for over a century.

Two perfectly preserved human mummies.

Were they found in an ancient Egyptian tomb?

Not quite.

Their story begins in 1888 with eccentric local farmer Graham Hamrick,

who claimed he was able to replicate ancient Egyptian mummification.

So where does this small-time farmer find cadavers to experiment with?

Well, for about $140 or 3,500 bucks today,

the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum was delighted

to sell him the bodies of two female patients

who'd gone unclaimed by their families.

Remarkably, Hamrick's technique worked.

He patented the process and soon caught the eye of P.T. Barnum,

whose traveling circus took the so-called Philippi mummies on tour for several years.

The pharaohs would be proud.

The rest of us can be rightly disturbed.
