The Trans-Allegheny
Lunatic Asylum.

Oh, heck, yeah.

I take it you know
this place.

I wouldn't be a very good
paranormal investigator
if I didn't.

Trans-Allegheny
is one of the most iconic

haunted locations
in the world.

Arguably the most iconic.

This is a a former
psychiatric hospital

whose terrible past is said
to actively haunt its present.

And they've just
reached out to us
with exclusive access.

For us to investigate
where no team
has gone before.

[Josh]
Deep in the wilderness
of West Virginia,

the monstrous
Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum

stands abandoned,

A horrifying reminder
of the evils

of early American medicine.

Construction begins
in 1858.

But as the Civil War
inflames America,

the asylum's construction
cools to a halt.

The building's half formed
husk is battled over

by Union
and Confederate forces.

When the dust settles,

the vast gothic asylum

begins admitting
patients in 1864.

To this day,
it is one of the largest

hand cut stone buildings
in North America.

But by the 1950s,
a place of healing and hope

becomes one of horror

due to its controversial
and often deadly treatments.

Electroshock therapy,
hydrotherapy,

insulin induced comas
and lobotomies.

Dr. Walter Freeman,

armed with nothing more
than an ice pick and a hammer.

Makes Trans-Allegheny
his home.

The patients themselves
also become more sinister.

As Trans-Allegheny
begins admitting

criminally insane murderers.

the facility shuts its doors,

but not before an estimated
20,000 people die here.

After new owners
purchased the asylum

in 2007, they reopened
it as a museum.

But as soon as they do,
visitors begin to see

and hear things
that shake them to their core.

infamous asylums.

And we came back
with some astounding evidence.

in the asylum's impeccably
restored front lobby.

at Trans-Allegheny
between them.

of the foremost authorities

on the location's dark past.

and us being out there
so much more.

The activity is really
starting to kick up.

Which buildings
are we talking about?

of the hospital's
sprawling campus.

lead us outside
to a large lawn

surrounded on all sides

by additional
asylum buildings.

It's incredible
how many buildings

are hiding back here.

[Zachary] And behind
these buildings.

That's where the farm
was that we still own

over 300 acers
of the original land.

All right. I got to say,
that is not the prettiest
building back there.

-[Phil] Yeah.
-[Josh] But so start here.
What is this?

The in criminally
insane unit.

The worst of the worst

were housed
within that building.

You're talking
serial killers,

murders, rapists,
all within that building.

Wow. So the most dangerous
patients--

The most.

And what sort of activity
is reported in there.

[Jess] We have footsteps.

-We have disembodied voices.
-[woman laughing]

[Jess] Shadow figures.

Whenever you're going
to unlock the building
or lock up the building,

you'll hear banging
from the windows

that somebody's
trying to get out.

Wow. Okay, so where else
don't you want to be alone in?

The medical center.

-[Josh] The building
on the far end?
-[Jess] Yes.

-[Josh] Okay.
-Why?

[Zachary]
So the medical building
was built to pretty much

be the hospital
for the hospital.

-[Josh] Hmm.
-[Phil] What kind
of procedures happened

in the medical center?

The insulin shock therapies,
the lobotomies

would have been
the main procedures there.

And there
was a notorious

doctor here who did those
lobotomies, right?

Yes. That would be
Dr. Walter Freeman.

So his main room
would have been
within that first floor,

where he performed
his ice pick lobotomies.

[Heather] Ice pick?

[Zachary] That's correct.

He went into
his kitchen one day,

opened up a drawer,

takes an ice pick to work

and performed that very first
ice pick lobotomy.

[Josh] What was the death rate

on those ice pick
lobotomy here?

[Zachary] Fourteen percent
I do believe.

[Josh exclaiming in horror]

And also,
on that first floor
is the morgue.

So if you died here,

you ended up
on that first floor.

So thousands of bodies
have passed through there.

[Josh] Wow.

Okay, so what kind of things
are reported in there?

We have a shadow figure
on the first floor

that we nicknamed
"The Doctor."

Because he does
pace back and forth

from where
the procedure rooms is,

up and down the hallway.

People have seen
this shadow?

-Mmm-hmm.
Multiple times.
-Okay.

We also have a spirit
that we call "Joker."

He is mischievous.

He's known to make
equipment malfunction.

Multiple people have seen him,
like peeking his head
around the door,

looking at you.

And have either
of the two of you

-ever had
experiences in there?
-Yes

Probably the most
terrifying encounters

that we have had
on the property.

Welcome to the third floor.

This area would have been
the patient rooms

for any patients
that was in here
for procedures.

This is where
the scream happened.

The one you sent us?

Yes.

So take us through
this event

because it is this, like,
bloodcurdling noise.

How many of you were here
in the building that night?

There was a total
of seven of us.

Six of us was down
in the morgue.

On the first floor.

And one decided
he wanted to walk
all the floors by himself.

About three
or four doors down

is whenever he heard
this blood curling scream.

[screaming]

[man] What the... [bleep]

Did you hear the scream
where you were?

[Jess] Yes. All six
of us heard it.

While we were down
on the first floor
in the morgue.

I see him run down the hall
and ran outside.

I went out
to check on him.

I asked him what happened.

He was shaking so bad,
I had to get the recorder

from him to play back
what he just heard.

So he was terrified.

He was terrified.

And what about
your experience, Zachary?

Where was that?

If it was up in the attic.

Let's see it.

[Zachary] I was up here
exploring with another

tour guide from the asylum
and a couple of his friends.

So we were all
in this area.

First, it started
with some noises,

so I heard
a couple of footsteps.

As I hear these footsteps,

that's when I started
seeing a shadow

blocking out the window
at the end of the hall.

And as I head towards it,

the shadow
swoops towards me.

[intense music playing]

And the shadow
went over you,
went into you?

What did it do?

It came up to me
and then dissipated.

Did it make any noise?

-[Zachary] It did not.
-Silent.

Silent.

What do you think it was?

[sighs] I would say
that it was an intelligent
style hunt

something that's here
and able to interact with us.

[Josh] With two extraordinary
eyewitness accounts

featuring a disembodied scream

and a mysterious
shadow figure.

We're going to start
our investigation

in the medical center.

We set up our command center
on the first floor

and established surveillance
on the reported hot spots.

Including the attic
where the shadow figure
was seen.

and where people
have reported a spirit

known as the Joker

I got goose bumps.

we've heard something

and because of the scream
heard here,

an old mid-century microphone.

The kind that patients here
might have been familiar with.

My hope is that
it may help encourage

any lingering spirits
to reach out and make contact.

In the meantime,
we got a lot more building

We head up to the attic
where Zachary had his
disturbing encounter

with what he believes
was a ghostly shadow figure.

Okay, this is, uh,

a lot scarier at night.

Look, now that we're up here
in the dark,

you really can see
where Zachary was talking
about seeing the shadow.

It's just ink black
down there.
You can't see anything.

So on one hand,
you can totally imagine

how somebody sees a shadow
in all that murk.

On the other hand,
how does he see
anything at all?

[Phil] Yeah. I mean,
there's a window down there.
There's a window over here.

-Let's say it's a
full moon that night.
-[Josh] Right.

[Phil] Then, if something
were down there,

then he would be able to see
some sort of shadow.

-But it doesn't explain it
moving towards him.
-[Josh] And shadow of what?

That's the big question.

Even if there
is ambient light,
what's he seeing?

The Joker?

So if he did see
something ghostly down there,

let's see if we can
coax it out.

up on the rafters.

But if some pigeon

that flying toward you?

I'm gonna keep looking around

-for evidence of something.

which means this is
an owl pellet.

an owl regurgitates

-as it is digesting a mouse.

they fly silently.

So an owl coming at you
under the right light

could seem like a shadow
coming right at you.

possible debunk,

we make our way down
to the first floor

to investigate
the asylum's morgue
and surgical suite.

In addition
to the alleged Joker entity
said to lurk here,

staff also report
a shadow figure
known as the Doctor.

In addition to the morgue,
the first floor is also

where infamous doctor,
Walter Freeman

brutally lobotomized
countless patients
with an ice pick.

The morgue is somewhere
around here, right?

Graham Hamrick,

who claimed he was able
to replicate ancient
Egyptian mummification.

farmer find cadavers

Well, for about $140
or 3,500 bucks today,

the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic
Asylum was delighted

to sell him the bodies
of two female patients

who'd gone unclaimed
by their families.

Remarkably, Hamrick's
technique worked.

He patented the process
and soon caught the eye
of P.T. Barnum,

whose traveling circus took
the so-called Philippi mummies
on tour for several years.
