for the shop, unfortunately.

we've been doing everything possible
to get this shop back on track.

We've done a few deals
that brought in some solid profit.

But we're still sitting on
a $250,000 investment.

when it came down to it,
sitting on another car

just wasn't something
we were willing to do.

-We're just trying to cash out.

But I just have a budget
that I shouldn't go past.

Even though we're taking
a 15 grand loss here,

this deal is by far our best option

if we want to cash out right now.

taking a loss on a vehicle,

but, I mean,

We're gonna have to recoup this loss.

I actually already lined up a new deal.

Mr. Sneaky Pants over here,

doing deals without telling me about it.

Did you think that was gonna make

I'm not saying I expected
the rocket car to blow up in our face,

but I always knew there was a chance,

so I decided to put
the wheels in motion on a new deal.

I've been talking to John Perez
about doing another build.

It seems he has
a vintage military ambulance

that he wants customized.

John Perez is an old friend of the shop.

A few years back, we built a wedding coach

as a 20th-anniversary gift
for John's wife, Maria.

[people cheering]

[Shawn] John likes his bling,
that's for sure.

Here's the thing.

He only wants to spend
about 35 grand on it,

and apparently he's got
a super quick deadline on this project.

I guess he wants it ready
for some special occasion.

The thing with John,
he's an impulsive guy.

We only had three weeks
to do that wedding coach build,

but tight deadlines mean quick paychecks,

which is exactly what we need right now.

Thirty-five grand won't leave
a lot of meat on the bones,

but at least there'll be
something there to chew on.

-When can we see it?

That makes the job a little easier.

-What's on the inside?
-[John] It's fully loaded, my friend.

What are you thinking about doing to it?

-It's a graduation gift for my grandson.
-Awesome.

He just graduated from high school.
He's going to San Diego State.

This is going to be
the ultimate party bus.

a pristine vintage ambulance

and turn it into some crazy party bus.

Normally what you'd see out of a party bus
is a fricking Mercedes Sprinter van,

or you see a Chrysler 300
or a Lincoln Town Car.

That's generic. John's not that guy.

-So, what is your timeline on this?
-Well, that's the thing.

-You know me, I'm very impulsive.

You have five days to get it done.

-[laughs]

-[Mark] Right? Wow.
-Exactly.

Five days, 35,000.
I think that's pretty good.

[Shawn off-screen] We knew this build
would have a deadline. It's John.

That's a pretty tight deadline.

So you want the inside
completely John Perez blinged-out.

-Gotta match what I'm wearing.

[Mark] John knows what he wants.

We're just gonna
have to do it in five days.

We really don't have a choice.
For 35 grand, we'd do it in three days.

I need to get this thing
up the street and on the trailer.

length of time to get this done.

John Perez is gonna pay us 35 grand
to turn this into a party bus.

But we have to have this done in five days

if we want to get our 35 grand.

-[Tony] But it runs?
-It runs. Drives rock solid.

So we need to get this thing
stripped apart on the inside.

-But in the meantime...
-[Caveman chuckles]

so you need to skedaddle

-and go get us another car.

-So let's get this cleaned up.

-[men chuckling]

John Perez and Gotham Garage
both have the same style.

We both like a lot of bling.

Hey, two heads are better than one?
[chuckles]

But the challenge on this job
will be timing out the build perfectly.

Here, I got a date for you, Constance!
No head. He don't think.

-I'm a little creeped out right now.
-[Tony] He won't talk back.

It's gonna be tight, but if we're gonna
get this party bus done in five days,

we need to map this build out in detail.

So this is how
we're gonna plan this party right.

[heavy rock music playing]

Today is day one.

So we need to strip this thing apart

and then come up
with some detailed sketches

and form a solid plan of attack.

Day two is dedicated to the interior.

I wanna add
super comfortable custom seating

with cold storage underneath.

[clangs]

Day three is when we turn things up.

We're gonna add LED lighting
all across the top

with a disco ball to set the mood.

We're also gonna add
a couple of flat screens

and toss in a mirrored ceiling.

Day 4 is all about the exterior.

We're gonna give this huge ambulance
an all-gold reflective wrap.

And the final day
is all about blinging this thing out

with a ton of Gotham Garage touches.

Let's do some sketches on this
and figure out the seating program.

And then I'll get with Shawn and give him
a list of what we need to order.

-[Tony] Yeah.
-[Caveman] Hey.

[Shawn] The party bus alone

is barely gonna recoup the 15 grand loss
we took on the rocket car.

On a 35 grand job,

I'm thinking we're gonna make
17 or 18 grand profit,

so now we need to get
a quick build in the shop

that can actually
put money in our pockets.

Wait. Wh... What was that?

-That one, the Bug.
-Oh, no, that's my...

-No, that's my mom's car.

I bought that for my mom
a little while ago.

We could make that into a $20-$30,000 car
with very little work, bro.

We go for the same retro style.

We put big tires on the front,
but bigger tires on the back,

so it looks like
an old-school Bug, but it's not.

You know what? I'm gonna call your mom
and see if she'll sell me that Bug.

She always checks up on you.

[Mark] All jokes aside, I actually have
a practical reason for wanting this car.

There's a built-in market
of rabid off-road enthusiasts

who love Baja Bugs, but almost everyone
uses a vintage Beetle to build them.

I think if we put our stamp
on a modern Baja Bug,

we'll have a very desirable car.

[line ringing]

-Hello?
-Hey, Carol, it's Mark. How you doing?

Hey, Mark!

Hey, Shawny Boy!

How do you describe Shawn's Mom?
Very simple.

Picture Shawn
but as a sweet little old lady.

We're discussing your really nice

Volkswagen Cabriolet Beetle.

-Oh, it's a beauty.

[Mark off-screen] Carol is shrewd.

She's been in the car world
her whole life.

She knows how to work a deal,
and she knows how to get a deal.

Can I buy that car off for you?

the inside of this gaudy but classy?

[Tony] So day one on this build
was very productive.

We got the whole ambulance cleared out,
and then me and Mark sat down

and came up with some
pretty cool sketches for the party bus.

Now we're gonna
start working on the interior.

The back of this ambulance is where

the biggest transformation
is gonna take place.

We just need
some drywall and some texture.

-[Constance] Curb appeal.
-[both chuckle]

So this interior all needs
to be hand-built from scratch.

Easy-peasy.

We need to make the seats ourselves,
we need to do full custom upholstery,

and Mark wants to make cold storage
underneath the seats for drinks and food.

What else do you need cut?
Is that it for all the seats?

That's it for the seats.

So we got seatbacks,
backrests, back panels.

-Now we just need a wedgie for the roof.
-[Mark] How long and how big?

-They're 91 inches long.
-All right.

[Tony] Here's what concerns me most
about our five-day timeline.

In no way, shape or form...

[clacking]

...is this ambulance
set up to be a party bus.

-That fits pretty good.
-[Constance] Yeah.

You gotta remember,
these old military vehicles,

they're built to reliably
transport people and equipment

over the most rugged terrain,

so they're very simple machines.

[Caveman] Look, now you see me.

-Now you don't.
-[Constance laughs]

[Tony] Everything we're
doing to it is custom,

which means it's all gonna take time.

So if we're gonna turn this
into a legit party bus,

we're gonna have to work
quickly and efficiently

to get this done in time
for the graduation party.

[Mark] I'm pretty happy
with the progress we made today,

but we just gotta keep
plugging at this thing.

I mean, we gotta really knock this out.

But tomorrow,
we got another car showing up,

so we need to divide and conquer.

Tony and Constance,
you stick on the ambulance,

and Caveman and I, we're gonna jump
on this new Baja Bug project.

First thing in the morning,
when you come in,

get started back on this,
and get it all buttoned up.

Just keep in mind,
John likes a lot of bling.

-She likes to ride right up on the curb.

With Baja Bugs, most people
use the older Volkswagen Beetles

because it's a super simple car
that you can make an off-road car out of.

-My work's done here.
-[Mark] Yeah.

-I got to go get my mom another car.
-Get a nicer one.

'Cause you got an extra
1,500 bucks of my money.

[Shawn] Heck yeah.

[Mark] When you go and use a newer Beetle,
you've got to deal with the computer.

There's all kinds of hydraulic stuff
for the convertible top.

You don't know which wires you can cut
and which wires you can't cut.

-How often do we get cars with AC?
-[Caveman] Oh. Uh...

Needless to say,
it's not an easy undertaking.

[brakes squeak]

[Caveman laughs]

-Put the top back up.
-Hey, look what I found.

Aw...

-Shawn!
-Aw. No way!

-I'm... I'm framin' this.
-Oh, dude, he had a mullet!

[Caveman laughs]

My goal here is to get
20 grand or more for this Baja Bug.

Up, up, and away.

That means it's got to have appeal
to a legitimate off-road enthusiast.

[upbeat music playing]

Whenever you're talking off-road,
you've got to start with the suspension.

We're gonna lift the car,

adding big off-road shocks
all the way around.

Plus a set of ginormous tires,

so it can handle anything we throw at it.

We'll also give it a roll cage for safety.

Then we'll paint it
an outrageous classic color

in Beetle style.

That's how we're gonna take
Carol's little cruiser

and turn it into an all-terrain beast.

[music fades]

-[Mark] Caveman! Easy, dude.

Don't cut through any wires
on the backside of that.

Remember last time
we worked on a little German car?

where we're chasing wires
for the next three weeks.

on a new thing about manifestation.

Actually, you'd be surprised

[whispers] Smart Car.

A lot of you might remember

that Mark and I worked on
a Smart Car a while back.

And just like this Bug,
we were turning it into an off-road car.

-Ah-ha! Yeah!
-[Mark] Get your helmet on.

[Caveman] Truth be told,
that thing almost broke me.

[Mark] What the hell is wrong?
It's not staying in drive!

[Caveman] When we tore that thing down,

we pulled apart so many wires
it made the computer malfunction.

[Mark] What is this?
No... That's the motor.

[Caveman] And it took us days
to retrace our steps to figure out why.

Where's the self-destruct button at?

[Caveman] So from here on out,
on this Bug build,

I'm gonna be extra delicate and careful,

because if this car
gives us any problems like that,

I'm gonna smash this damn Bug

like a bug.

That's it. I can...

There we go. Now we're coming off.

Caveman, what did I just tell you?
You have to be careful.

Just think, "No Smart Car."

[Caveman] Stop manifesting it!

So, uh, what... what do we got going on?

-Party lights.
-Yeah.

I mean, we need as many lights as possible
in this small, confined area.

-That's the idea.
-[laughs]

Tony and I have been hard at work,
moving as quickly as possible,

trying to transform this ambulance
into a VIP party bus.

We got all of the seats cut out.

We put the mirror up on the ceiling,
and Tony was able to create

all of these custom fixtures
and lenses for our lights.

Next up, we wanna hook up
all of the LED lighting in the back.

The top ones,
we'll run them through the back.

We'll drill a hole up the corner
and then run our two passes that way.

Or, like I said, you can run two passes,

and then run
that little bit that you had left

along the side right here.

-Yeah.
-On the outside.

[Tony] You know,
this party bus is a fun project,

but if I'm being honest,

things at the shop
are just kind of stagnant right now.

The concept vehicles were supposed to
kick off a whole new era here at the shop

and lead us to bigger,
more high-paying builds,

but since they're both stuck in storage,

we're basically working on
the same old jobs,

and the future here
is more uncertain than ever.

I'm just calling you up
on those concept vehicles

I sent you pictures of before.

I know Shawn is meeting with people

and spreading the word
about the concept vehicles...

-How about the car and the bike?

these panels all upholstered,

put all of that back in.

So we're getting there,

but we're definitely
gonna be cutting it close.

decide on a five-day timeline,

Caveman and I are gonna add a pair
of badass Fox Shox to this little Beetle.

[Caveman whistles] Wow. That's awesome.

[Mark] These shocks
will lift this car way up off the ground

and give it
some awesome off-road capability.

[whirring]

Nothing like a sharpened drill bit.

The last thing we can afford on this Bug
is for any wires or cables to come loose,

or even worse, get cut accidentally.

That's gonna make the computer go haywire.

It's gonna take us forever
to figure out what went wrong.

It is frustrating because
now I have to be gingerly and dainty.

You have no idea
how unnatural this is to me.

and just ripping it apart.

I'm gonna go meet with Shawn,

all hands on deck on that party bus

I wanna give you an update
on the concept vehicles, all right?

I've been really putting out the word.

I've been getting a lot of action on them,

but nobody's ready
to fork out over 250 grand for them.

It's been a few months
since the virtual auction,

and I don't think any of us thought

that we'd still be sitting
on the concept car and bike.

Look, we're in limbo right now,

and I could tell the rest of the crew,
they're getting a little restless.

We need to figure out
what we're gonna do with these things.

I know Mark's plan was to sell
this car and bike to an individual buyer.

Then that would lead to bigger,
more high-profile builds.

But as long as we're
still sitting on these vehicles,

we're stuck in neutral.

I've thought about it.

We started out building those cars,

and then we've always talked about
taking them to a live auction.

So, why don't we revisit that?
There's some big auctions coming up.

Why don't you reach out
to some auction houses.

Take these cars to an auction
and see what happens.

Really?

I know our plan from the beginning was
to take these vehicles to a live auction,

and with Covid restrictions loosening,

I can understand why Mark
would bring this back up.

But here's the issue.

These vehicles have now been
sitting on the shelf for quite some time,

and auction buyers are always
looking for the hot new thing.

If we don't get 250,000,
are you willing to accept that scenario?

Well, yeah, because I don't think
that's gonna happen.

My fear is if we put those vehicles
on an auction block,

in front of that type of crowd,
it could totally backfire,

and the bids could fall way short.

In a big live auction setting,
there's gonna be tons of new buyers there.

It's gonna be our best opportunity
to get the most money for these vehicles.

All right, fair enough.
That's all I needed to hear.

I'll look around at some of the auctions,
see which one's coming up soon,

and we'll kinda go from there.

No, sounds like a plan.

[Mark] I got 48 hours
to go finish building myself

a, uh, custom party wagon
out of a military ambulance.

We got two days left to finish
this party bus for John and Damien,

but we've got to dedicate one full day

to the biggest part
of this transformation,

wrapping this massive ambulance.

a guy that loves bling?

a huge party bus wrapped in gold.

I still can't believe we got
all this done as fast as we did it.

is all about one last push
to dial in all the fine details.

a super-clean
limousine style plush interior,

all the cold storage underneath the seats.

[Mark] This ambulance project

was exactly the fun type of build
we need right now.

Sure, it was a quick turnaround,
but the end result was worth it.

In just five days,
it went from a military vehicle

to a blinged-out millennial party bus.

We gave it a super loud
gold exterior with giant tires.

On the inside, you would never know
that this thing was born back in the '50s.

John gave us 35 grand to build this thing,

but honestly,
it looks like a million bucks.

This is gonna be one bus

that Damien is gonna have
way too much fun driving around in.

[mellow blues rock music playing]

My problem with the whole deal

is I don't know
what Damien's gonna think of it.

I honestly didn't know what to expect
because my grandpa is unpredictable,

but I'm so glad with how it turned out.

This, my friend,

-Can you do some partying in this bus?

We got you two flat-screens. Party ball.

-This is insane.
-You gotta have the mirror on the ceiling.

-We got two ice chests built-in.
-[Shawn] Heck yeah.

[John] Fabulous job, Mark.

-Wanna hop up in and see how it feels?

This is a mobile nightclub
you got going here.

-[Mark] Pretty much.
-Oh, man. This thing will be lit at night.

John and Damien love the car,
which we love.

And at 35 grand, that means
we're getting 18 grand in profit.

You know, it's not the biggest payday,

but it ain't too shabby
for five days of work.

You guys did an awesome job to it.

The lights, the ceiling, the mirrors.

Five days was tight on this,
but we got good money.

It's a win-win situation.

John's happy. We're happy.
Everything is good.

We build a car in five days,
and this guy thinks it's easy.

and delivered to John and Damien,

this roll cage for the Volkswagen...

I got a guy on the phone right now
that wants to buy the concept pair.

[sputters] I guess I should
go take that phone call.

This guy just calls me out of the blue.
His name's Nick.

I guess he saw pictures
of the concept car and bike

-through a contact at the Petersen Museum.
-Really?

[Shawn] Hey, Nick, you there?

I'm with Mark here.

-[Mark] Hey, Nick.
-Hey, Mark.

So, Nick, you were saying
you're a broker, huh?

Yeah, I'm a... I'm a collections consultant
to a few collectors here in the U.S.,

and a handful overseas, Europe, et cetera.

One of my guys passed on some photos

of your concept car and bike
a couple of weeks ago.

I put it in front of a few people,

and I've got one guy
that's particularly interested.

-He wants me to come have a look.
-Really?

I want to see
if it's available for me to see.

[Mark] When do you wanna look at it?

If it's possible, I could be there
in about an hour to an hour and a half.

Obviously, we had pretty much written off
an individual buyer at this point.

Mark and I had settled on bringing
this car and bike to a live auction.

Absolutely, an hour,
an hour and a half will work.

We can get the cars over here to the shop
and cleaned up for you to view.

No problem.

before we roll the dice at a live auction.

We got an hour to make some money,
