is the only thing standing
between us and a ten grand bonus

that'll turn this build
into a $50,000 payday.

[Tony] He better haul ass.
We need him to make up time.

-It's gonna be really close, guys.

-[Caveman] Is he gonna get it?

At first, I thought
he was gonna sandbag it,

and then at about turn three,
I thought he was gonna wreck it.

I'm just glad that he made it
in under two minutes.

-So, how does it feel?
-[Adam] Like I might owe you ten grand.

-[Shawn] Yeah!
-Sweet.

-[Adam] Under two minutes?
-[Constance] One fifty-two twenty-nine.

-[Caveman] Yeah!
-[Shawn] That's what I'm talkin' about!

This is as close to a 917
as I'm gonna get for a while.

And I'm happy about that.

You gotta trust me a little more next time
'cause this was one heck of a deal.

-To get 40 grand to turn this car into a...
-I can't handle any more of your rhetoric.

And then that extra ten grand!

is feeling pretty good.

-Between the rat rod deal

and the Laser deal...

...we've actually done pretty well
over the past few weeks.

But we have to keep that momentum going.

So right now,

I've got another deal cooking
that could be huge for the shop.

-What's up there, Goldilocks?
-Hey.

All right, where do we go from here?

You know, seein' as we're
a little bit back on our feet now,

I was thinking,
what about an upgrade and trade deal?

What is this upgrade and trade?
What are we talking here?

I've talked to a guy
that has a salvage yard,

and he's been wanting to give up
some of his older good project cars

for a '57 Chevy wagon.

All right, so there's no way
it's gonna happen.

'57 Chevies are not easy to find, dude.

What, do you think this is amateur hour?
I've got one already lined up.

We take that '57 wagon,
doll it up really nice,

and make it worth
somewhere between 35 and 40 grand.

Then we bring it up
to my buddy Mark's salvage yard.

He's got tons of old Detroit steel,

and he'd be willing
to trade big for this '57.

He'll give us cars and cash
worth about 50 grand.

[dinging]

Well, the '57 sounds like a good deal,
so I'm down with that.

But your problem is,

are all the kids in the other room
gonna be okay with that right now?

They just came off
of two really good deals,

and now they know they're gonna have
to wait a minute for a payday.

-Let's go talk to them.
-You get to sell it to them.

-It's your idea.
-You mind backing me up on this one?

-[Mark] No.
-Okay.

[both chuckle]

Shawn's got some news for you.

-[Caveman] News?
-You're quitting?

Hey, hey, hey.

-[Constance laughs]
-You're leaving?

[Shawn] Listen, Mark and I've
been thinking about doing

another upgrade and trade deal.

I've got a guy that has
a salvage yard full of old cars,

and he is willing
to give up a lot of those

for a '57 Chevy wagon.

[Constance] So, like,
what potential cars could we get?

[Shawn] Good builders.
Got a lot of good old Detroit steel there.

So potentially good.

-Got a... a ton of potential.
-[upbeat music playing]

[Constance] Under any normal
circumstances around here,

we would dive into an upgrade and trade,

no questions asked.

But trades take a while to cash out,

and since we still have 250 grand
just sitting in storage right now,

we really wanna make sure
this is a rock solid deal.

I understand everyone's concern.
I know where you guys are coming from,

but what if we hedge our bet?

We bring in another client build
at the same time.

Something to make sure that we have
some steady money coming in

while we work this deal.

You got anything lined up?

[Shawn] I have a few people
I've been talking to,

so I don't see a problem
setting up a really nice cash deal.

I just need a minute to set it all up.

I like the cash deal.

So, if I can eventually find a cash deal,

are you guys good
with us moving forward on this trade?

[Mark] All right, so if everyone's
on board with that trade,

I wanna get that project
started right away.

So, Shawn, tomorrow in the morning
we're gonna go pick up that '57 wagon,

so you guys just clean up the shop,
go home, we'll call it an early day.

And then Shawn
and I'll go in the morning...

You didn't say, "clean up,"

and then pause, and then "go home."

[all chuckling]

-[truck horn honks]
-[Tony] Oh, we got something.

-[Constance] I like. I like.
-I see body parts.

-I see doors on the truck.
-[Shawn] Here it is. Your '57 wagon.

-[Mark] You like that?
-[Tony] I love it.

[Mark] So what we need to do
is get it inside,

and then we'll go over
what we're gonna do with it.

[upbeat rock music playing]

[Shawn] These old '57 handyman wagons

are one of the most recognizable wagons

in American history.

They were the quintessential family wagon.

It was the type of car where Mom could
cart the kids around during the week,

but it was a two-door,

so it was still cool enough
for Dad and his buddies

to cruise on the weekend.

[Caveman] Whoo.

[Mark] So here's the deal.

I wanna get to work
on this car, like, right now.

All of us just jump in, all hands on deck.

Shawn, you gotta get back in the office
and find us a cash deal.

You know I'm on it.

Let's grab some tools
and some sheet metal and get rocking.

Right on.

[Mark] According to Shawn,
the guy we're trading with,

he wants this wagon
because it's nostalgic for him.

Now he wants to share that
with his kids and his grandkids.

[whirring]

So on this build, I wanna give him
the ultimate Gotham Garage family wagon.

That is the best way to make sure

that we get maximum trade value
out of this deal.

We'll start the transformation
in the back.

We'll do a custom mini tub in the rear

to make room
for a massive set of wheels and tires.

We'll do a custom interior
all around with bench seating.

For his family, we're gonna add
a jump seat in the back.

Our twist on the family cruiser.

Underneath the hood,
that's where this thing becomes a hot rod.

We're gonna put in a 454 big block

with a fuel-injected
velocity stacked intake manifold.

In the end, we'll finish off the car

with a classic
two-tone family wagon paint job.

-[sander rattling]
-[crackling]

[Tony] Hey, Mark, I think you'll wanna
come check this out, man.

It's pretty bad.

Man, there's some...
there's some crud in here.

Man, this rust is alive.

-It's a living organism. It eats and eats.
-[Mark] It doesn't stop till you stop it.

Yeah. Well, you know what you have to do
when it's that bad, right?

Pretty much just got to get rid of it.

I know this '57 wagon
can lead us to a big trade,

but this thing is

a lot more of a project
than what I thought it was gonna be.

It needs rust repair,

motor, steering, interior.

[tool tapping]

[Mark] I don't know what this is,
but it ain't metal.

[Tony] Thankfully, Shawn's working
on another cash deal as we speak

because it's gonna take a lot

to resurrect this '57 back from the dead.

Let's get this all cut out, replaced.

We've got work to do. That's for sure.

[surfer rock music playing]

Hey, Goldilocks, what have you got for me?

-Hey, hey. How's it going?
-You line up a deal yet?

Yes, I did. But there's
a few things we need to discuss

before we pull the trigger...

Why wouldn't there be?

[Shawn] I worked the phones
all day yesterday,

and I think I've tracked down
the perfect cash build for us.

So I talked to this guy named James,
and he's a bit of an oddball guy,

but he's got himself a T-Bucket
that he wants to have restored.

I like T-Buckets.

T-Buckets usually generate
a lot of money real quick.

Well, here's the thing.
He also has a Ranchero.

So are we doing the Ranchero
or the T-Bucket? Which one?

He wants us to do both.

He wants to take
the T-Bucket and the Ranchero

and morph the two together.

The money is amazing.

We're talking about 60 grand
for a T-Bucket.

A T-Bucket and a Ranchero.

And a Ranchero.

Building one car is hard enough,
but putting two cars together,

that's a challenge.

How do you take a Ranchero

and make it into a cool T-Bucket?

[Shawn] Don't you like
the ultimate challenge?

You love doing these crazy projects.

And who else would build
something like this but us?

[Mark] As daunting as this task is,

if it's done right it has the potential
of being something really cool.

It brings you back to the '50s and '60s

when people were building
some pretty crazy hot rods.

Listen, I'll take care of James,
you take care of T-Bucket and Ranchero.

So how soon can this happen?

I can have this car down here in an hour.

All right, I'm gonna go get Caveman.
We'll meet you over at the other shop.

If anything goes wrong with this,
it's your fault.

-[Mark] Wow. Now that's a bucket.
-[Caveman] Wow.

-Oh, sweet!
-[Mark] Look at that.

I already like what I see.

-[Caveman chuckles]
-It has a chrome front end, disk brakes.

Dude, this thing only needs a little bit
of spit shine, and we're good to go.

-[car horn honks]
-There's the Ranchero.

Oh, boy, that looks a little rougher
than the T-Bucket.

-Good morning, guys.
-Hey, how you doin'?

-Hi. I'm Mark. Nice to meet you.
-Pleasure to meet you.

-Caveman.
-Caveman, pleasure to meet ya.

I came to Gotham Garage

because I have a very eclectic taste
in custom vehicles.

The cars that I generally enjoy
and like are very over-the-top.

[Mark] Give me a push, Caveman.

[James] I want this T-Bucket and Ranchero
to be no different.

And I believe Mark and his crew
can make this dream possible.

So your dream
was to put two cars together?

I want to take this T-Bucket,
I want to take this Ranchero,

and I'd like to bring them together
and make one.

Are you talking about
the front end of the car or the back?

I don't know exactly how to explain it.

It needs to be loud.

It needs to just scream "wild."

Okay. [chuckles]

It's hard when you get a client
who knows what he wants

but not how to convey what he wants.

Start with what you believe my vision is.

[chuckles]

[Mark] The bigger problem
with a build like this

is it can quickly spiral out of control,

making change after change after change.

We don't have time for that.

What I was hoping you'd do
is just start working on them

and send me pictures.

I'm a very visual kind of guy.

[Mark] So the only thing
that we can do right now

is trust our instincts,
build this car as quickly as possible,

and give James the car of his dreams.

[chuckles]

Mark?

Well, as long as you're good
with the money and the process.

Yeah, I have faith in you.

Well, I'm gonna shake your hand, then.
We got a deal, my friend.

Clearly, this build
is a little more elaborate than I thought.

[straining] Oh, yeah.

But as long as we don't spin our wheels
figuring out what James wants,

I don't see a problem making
30 grand or more on this project.

[Mark] Thank you for bringing me
a guy that has a vision

but can't get the vision out.

[Caveman chuckles]

All I know is that
we're gonna make a ton of money

and you guys are gonna
knock it out of the park.

I got a concept car
and a concept bike to sell,

and you guys got
one hell of a T-Bucket to build.

Make me proud. [chuckles]

[Mark] Don't you just love
how he dumps this on us

and then runs to the exit?

[chuckles]

So let me get two seconds to look at this,
come up with a few sketches,

and have Shawn send them over to James
before we go full steam ahead on this.

And in the meantime,

you need to get a Sawzall,
an extension cord,

and start tearing down on this Ranchero
to see what we're working with.

Yeah, buddy!

-[laughs]
-[upbeat heavy metal music playing]

[Tony] Well, we've got
some work to do here.

We've gotta fix the rust
on the bottom of the door.

There's rust down in the fenders.
The roof is... It's hardly a roof.

It's a lot of rust.

Well, there's only
one way to go about this.

We gotta cut out all the rust,
and we have to make patch panels.

Honestly, I don't think
that we've had to do this much rust repair

on something in a long time.

Uh, you could say we're a little rusty.

[awkward sting]

-No?
-No.

Not... I'm not even
gonna humor that with you.

[laughs]

Once rust starts on a car like this,
it's like an alien life form.

-It keeps eating and eating and eating.
-[buzzing]

[Constance] There's a hole in there.

[Tony] And it won't stop.

You have to cut it out
and put fresh new metal in.

-[buzzing]
-[Constance] Oh, this thing sucks.

[Tony] It takes so long to repair
because the rust gets in

those tight little spots
where the water collected.

Man, there's some crud in here.

And the problem is
we can't move forward on this car

until all of these rust spots
are addressed.

[clangs loudly]

[Constance] Definitely,
trying to fit all of these pieces

like exact to every curve
is the most difficult part, I feel like.

Well, yeah, these body panels
were made in huge stamping machines,

and everything was pressed into shape.

And now we have to recreate that
with these tools.

Sure, yeah.

[clangs]

This '57 Chevy build is a great build
and it's a great car,

and Shawn's really saying
that this is like a guaranteed trade.

[Constance] It would be nice
if it came in perfectly square sizes.

It never seems to work that way, does it?

This could be the build
that gets the shop back rolling.

Gets everybody in a groove.

There you go. Patch things up.

But the '57 is still a huge build,

and it's gonna have a lot of time
and a ton of money into it.

-[epic rock music playing]
-[crackling]

[rasping]

[crackling]

[buzzing]

[Tony] I don't know if Shawn knew
how big a project this was

when he brought it in,
but now we're committed to it,

and we're gonna have to do
whatever it takes

to get this car finished

and get this trade done.

[Constance] Wow.

I think it's looking pretty good.

Yeah, I mean, it's always good
when you can't, like,

put your arm through
multiple places in the vehicle.

[Tony] We're not there yet.
We still got a few holes to patch up, but...

Let's finish the little bit that's left,

so we can get to
the actual fun parts of the build.

And no more dealing with Swiss cheese.

Let's go.

[Mark] Well, I can see someone

had a hell of a time
tearing down this Ranchero.

[Caveman and Mark chuckling]

So I came up with a plan last night.

And I had Shawn text James some sketches.

-Yeah?
-And he just sent me a text.

He says, "Can you make it more exuberant?"

I can tell by the look on your face,
you don't know what that means either.

-Oh, so I'm not the only one lost here?
-No.

[laughs, mutters]

But anyways, he said he likes it.
So the word "like" is in there.

-We're on the right path.
-Sounds great.

-Let's get started. Just follow my lead.
-Yeah, let's go.

[intense music playing]

Morphing a T-Bucket and a Ranchero
is gonna be no easy feat.

But I think
I've come up with a perfect plan

to make this thing over-the-top and loud.

To marry these two vehicles together,

I'm gonna take
the sexiest part of the '59 Ranchero,

the rear quarter panels.

We'll fuse them
to the back of the T-Bucket

to make the car look like
it's in motion when it's sitting still.

To box in the rear end, we're gonna use
the Ranchero tailgate and taillights.

Up front, we'll stack
a bunch of bling on the motor

and also put on
a set of super loud side pipes.

Inside, we'll give it
a full custom interior.

We'll also yank the top off this thing
and turn it into a badass roadster.

We'll finish it off
with a super bright candy-coated paint job

that gives it that wow factor
James is looking for.

[sander rasping]

The challenge here

is how do you make two things
that are polar opposites flow together?

I see you!

[Mark] I have to make it look
like a cartoon car.

I have to take two things that don't fit
and somehow make them fit together

to look like it was born that way.

-That looks pretty cool, huh?
-[Caveman] That thing looks pretty sick.

-[Mark] We're gonna do way more to this.
-[camera clicking]

But let's get Shawn
to send these to James.

Let's get a beer
and wait to see what he says.

I like that idea. Beer.

[funky music playing]

Hey, Scott, it's Shawn from Gotham.

-So that's pretty good.

I'm just calling you,
I'm giving you a little follow-up

on those concept vehicles
I sent you pictures of before.

[Shawn off-screen] Obviously,
I've been on an all-out manhunt

trying to track down a buyer
for this concept car and bike.

-How about the car and the bike?
-What... What is that? That's gorgeous.

Yeah, our main builder,
it's one of his original designs.

I've been sharing pictures and videos
with tons of my high-end connections.

-Oh, what a beauty that is.
-Yeah, you like that, huh?

[off-screen] Everyone loves the vehicles.
There's no question about that.

But the more people I talk to,
the more I realize

this could take more time
than any of us expected.

[man on phone] The work is just fantastic.

But in the buyer's market,
everybody wants a classic.

I'm a little bit nervous
about investing my money

in something as unique
as that concept car.

[Shawn] These are
super unique custom vehicles,

and with Covid
and the state of the world right now,

collectors are playing it
a little bit on the safe side.

I'm not really sure
that right now is the right time for me.

[Shawn] Eventually,
the market will come around,

and I will track down a buyer.

But in the meantime, the good news is

the deals I'm bringing
into the shop are working.

And as long as Mark stays open-minded

to any and all new deals
that I bring to the table,

we should be able to weather the storm

until I find a concept buyer.

to jump on the phone really quick.

-and let's rip the Band-Aid off.
-[Caveman chuckles]

[Shawn] I think that's a great idea.
Let's just do this.

-[James] Hello.
-Hey, James, it's Shawn.

-Mark's right here.
-Hey, Mark.

Um, I was looking at what you've sent,

and it doesn't quite have
the wow factor I'm lookin' for.

Yeah, well, I mean,
keep in mind it's not done.

And you know it's just
in mock-up phase still too.

Oh, yeah, no, I... I understand. I...

It's just I... I think we need to take it
to that next level.

Under normal circumstances,

I would try to steer James
down the path I want him to go down.

In this case, however,
this is not the time and place.

This car is supposed to hedge our bets
against that 1957 wagon,

and he's giving us
60 grand for this build.

Okay, so if that's missing the wow factor,

I mean, I can go in a different direction.
I can add like a cantilevered roof.

And, uh, maybe make the roof see-through.

That sounds different.

[Shawn] So if he puts a roof on it,
is that gonna work for you?

I... I think it will.

Okay, James, so we'll go ahead with that
and then we're gonna put it in paint,

then you can come on down
and check it out.

So, for every road trip,

you need to have a special seat.

That one seat that you can put

the loudest, most obnoxious kid.

-You gotta tuck them the farthest back.

It's really... It's...

It's a Caveman seat.

He's that kid in the family, for sure.

[chuckles]

It took a bunch of work,

but we finally got all the rust spots
patched up on the '57 wagon.

So now we wanna find ways
that we can make this car

more appealing to Mark,
the salvage yard owner,

and this jump seat in the back

is the perfect family addition
to this car.

I'm gonna go get on the water jet

and cut us out a backrest.

In the meantime, can you cut me
a couple of pieces of tube?

Okay.

[intense music playing]

So if Gotham Garage was a family,
who would everyone be?

Man, that's a really good question.

Mark and Shawn would be Mom and Dad.

[Mark] Nice boots.
Did you make those yourself?

-Shut up.
-Boot Barn two-for-one sale, right?

I'm the good kid, for sure.
I did my homework. I got good grades.

Constance, she's definitely
the rebellious daughter,

you know, stirring things up a little bit.

And then there's Caveman.

[imitates foghorn, laughs]

I think Caveman
might have got switched at birth,

but Mom loves him, and we're keepin' him.

[crackling]

Looks good. Everything seems even.

-I think it's gonna work out good.
-Yeah.

So right now,
we'll push this car to the side for a bit.

I know Mark's painting
the T-bucket this afternoon,

and I've got to hop on the water jet
and cut a few parts for that car.

So you and I can help them
finish up that project.

[Constance punches hand] Go team.

[Mark] Caveman and I went all out

on giving this T-bucket a badass roofline.

So now it's time
to give this car one wild paint job.

Green with a pagan gold candy.

And when you see it,
you're gonna walk up to it and lick it.

With all the bling we're putting on this,

hopefully James
is gonna love this hot rod.

[music fades]

[Caveman] Oh, look at that.

[Tony] Do-si-do.

I never thought I'd say this,
but James has been kind of radio silent,

and the last time I sent him a text,
all I got was a big emoji thumbs up.

[exciting music playing]

[water sloshing]

Who knows what's goin' on.

I know we're building a badass car,
I believe we're on the right track,

and it matches the style
and the creativity this shop is known for.

[rattling]

All the little beads and trinkets,
the paint, the blower, the interior,

it's the quintessential car show car.

[Caveman] What do you get when you cross
a Ranchero with a T-Bucket?

A bucket of ranch.

[Caveman chuckles]

[Mark] Does that mean we're in the clear?

Absolutely not.

James could change anything
at any moment in time.

But as far as I'm concerned,
this is a badass hot rod.

[exciting techno music building]

[dramatic rock music playing]

The best thing about this project
is who would have ever thunk

that a '59 Ranchero and a T-Bucket
would go together so well?

You take two things
that have nothing in common,

but when you graft one onto the other,

this car just kind of
took itself down to dreamland.

The way the roof cantilevers over,
it just kind of all flows together.

[music continues]

James was right about one thing
from the very beginning.

We were the perfect shop
to pull off this crazy idea.

I know it was a challenge
to try and figure out

what was in the head of James,
and, man, here it is.

There's no doubt this little
Jolly Rancher's got fricking wow factor.

The problem is, is it his wow factor?
There's the moment we've been waiting for.

Is James gonna like it?

Or is he gonna make us do
a ton of changes to it?

-That's him. He's here.
-Yeah?

-I'm gonna get him.
-I'll wait here for you there, Goldilocks.

On the request of Mr. Dramatic over here,

we didn't send
final pictures of the build.

So we will definitely
be gettin' his first impression.

[Mark] Is that over-the-top enough?

[James] This is the moment
I've been waiting for.

I've been very apprehensive
and very worried

because I wasn't
able to give them a lot of details.

But as I've said,
I will know it when I see it.

So, what do you think?

Definitely different.

I have never seen
something like this done before.

[Mark] We modified it pretty heavily.

We made these filler panels
that adapted the T-Bucket to the Ranchero,

so all this trim looks like it
was made that way from the factory.

Put big 20 by 14s on the back.

Put some 18 by 10s on the front.

Double stacked air cleaner.
You don't see that very much.

I hope this is what you saw in your dream.

-[clears throat]
-[Shawn] Well?

[James] You know,

I don't know how to put this.
You knocked this out of the damn park.

-Oh, there you go.
-There you go.

I am beyond flabbergasted.

I... I am beyond words.

Motor's definitely killer.

I did not anticipate so much
one-off custom things on this vehicle.

This is truly a one-of-a-kind
that I can add to my collection.

[Mark] Fire it up.

[engine sputtering]

we're lookin' pretty good here.

This is really shaping up to be
a nice little family wagon.

It's definitely not the family
station wagon that I remember as a child.

I feel like mine was definitely much more...

[inhales sharply]

-How can I put this nicely? Like, "lame."
-[both laugh]

The 454 that we're putting
into this '57 wagon is just unbelievable.

I mean, the fuel injection is reliable,

the velocity stacks look like a hot rod.

It's the perfect thing for this build.

[Tony] All right.
I think we're looking good here.

It's looking fast.

[Constance] I mean,
the whole build is family wagon,

but on the weekends, it's a hot rod.

So with this upgrade and trade-up,

we're really stacking
the odds in our favor

by building something
that he's really gonna love.

-Fire it up?

We're missing just a few things
before we're road-trip ready, but...

Snacks is the thing that was number one
on my priority list of what was missing.

[Tony] Let's get this to the paint booth

[Mark] We want this '57 wagon trade
to go off without a hitch.

And we want to get as much value
at the salvage yard as possible.

a super classic family wagon look.

It's a '57 two-door wagon. It's a classic.

and a lot of times,

On this project,
we started with next to nothing.

A junkyard rust bucket
that was ready for the scrap pile.

And now,

it's like we put you in a time machine

and took you straight back to 1957.

I'm telling you, this wagon
is absolutely perfect for this deal.

I think this trade is gonna be
monumental for the shop,

as far as getting money in.

[Mark] Well, the deal's
not done here yet, Shlipovitz.

You're really gonna have to work to get us
the max value of this '57 wagon.

[Shawn] I know. I know.

-It's a pretty big spot, huh?
-[Mark] Yeah, it is.

All I'm seeing is, like,
late model everywhere.

[Shawn] Yeah, well,
it's... it's a pretty big place.

[Mark] I don't see anything worth
what's on the back of the trailer.

[Shawn] We just got here. Relax.

I've been going to wrecking yards
and salvage yards

since I was a little kid.

It's been forever.

And I know that all of the good ones,
when you drive in the parking lot,

you spot at least four or five things
that you wanna take home with you.

Where's all the muscle car, hot rod stuff?

The last time I was here,
he had a ton of stuff.

[Mark] I really hope I'm wrong here

because we invested
a lot of time and money

in this 1957 Chevy wagon.

And we built this car specifically
to get the most out of this trade deal.

But this turned into
a bigger project than we thought.

-Shawn, how you doing, buddy?

-Oh, yeah.

[Mark] We're supposed to get
cars and cash, 50 grand out of this thing.

And there is nothing here
that I can see that's worth this car.
