We either wait it out
until this all passes,

and we take it to the next auction.
Who knows when that's going to be.

Or I can find
just an outright buyer for it right now.

The problem is, what if these auctions
come back in a few weeks?

If you go and find a buyer
and you sell these two cars today,

we're all gonna regret going,
"Why did we do that?"

I get it.
Nobody is more frustrated than I am.

This was not supposed to fall apart
in the 11th hour.

I don't want to be that person
speaking for everyone,

but I know, myself, personally,

I don't know how much longer
I could stretch those paydays.

[Mark] I know everyone is scared of,

"How am I gonna get my bills paid?"

"'Cause I was banking
on this money coming in now."

[Caveman] There's gotta be
something that can be done.

What other solutions do we have?

But the only way this plan works

is if we take this car to an auction.

And quite frankly, if we can't take it
to an auction and it has to sit and wait,

then I'm good with that.

Yes, we built these vehicles
just for the auction,

to get in that bidding frenzy
that drives the price up.

But obviously, the consensus is

that most of us can't afford
to wait this out any longer.

Maybe there's a way that we could have
an auction, but do it online.

-What are you talking about?
-[Tony] If you bring the buyers in,

and we get everybody
on a video conference,

that's pretty much an auction.

A live video auction.

I've never seen that before,
but I mean, it kind of makes sense.

I've been doing auctions
since I was a teenager,

and nothing beats the feeding frenzy

of bidders that you get at a live auction.

If we could somehow create
that same feeding frenzy

with a virtual auction,

it could work.

On these video conferences,
everybody can see everybody else,

so I think we could get
that same auction excitement.

That's true.

It's unconventional,
but under the circumstances,

it might be our best alternative.

It actually sounds
pretty damn good, really.

I don't know,
what do you think about that?

Well, I'm not opposed to it,
but at the end of the day,

you're gonna have to get
some high rollers to commit.

And I'm gonna be honest with everybody,

these two vehicles
are worth 250 grand or more.

So, they've got to be
those kind of clients.

So if you can make this whole process

work as good as a live auction,
then it'll be the next best thing.

No doubt.
So are we on board with this, or what?

before this car is assembled

Even though we started
with a solid donor Corvette,

we're still creating
a whole vehicle from scratch.

In a way,
this is really Mark's life's work.

He's been planning and designing
this car for years.

Ultimately, this concept car
is a reflection of him,

and it's a reflection of this shop
as a whole.

So we have to sell everybody

on the creativity and ingenuity
of this shop.

[Mark] Even though we don't have
a strict auction deadline anymore,

I still want to get this car done
in three weeks.

[Mark] Right now,
we're hitting our stride creatively.

And I want to keep the energy going,
so we don't lose momentum.

[Tony] It's pretty badass.

Yeah, this is one car
I want to go for a ride in.

[techno music playing]

[Shawn] All the big auctions are canceled,

and we're gonna have
our own virtual auction.

[man on phone] What do you mean by that?

We're gonna do it
just like a regular live auction,

but we're gonna do it
through video conferencing.

[man 1] Okay.

[Shawn] Tony's idea
to hold a virtual auction

is definitely our best shot
at mimicking that live auction feel,

but this is new to everyone.

And sometimes these big time buyers
are stuck in their ways.

The car and the bike are still for sale,
so we're gonna hold our own auction.

[man 2 on phone] Oh, like an eBay?

No, we're going to do our own
virtual auction.

[man 2] Oh.

I know Mark wants to hold this auction
in about three weeks,

but putting these guys in a new situation

and asking them to do something
they've never done,

could take a little convincing.

Instead of you going to the auctions,
we're going to bring the auction to you.

[man 3] Shawn, to be honest,
I'm having trouble picturing it.

I just can't see it.

So you'd be bidding against other bidders

through a video conference.

[man 4] Call me for the next one.

[Shawn] Yeah, I understand.

[man 5] I don't like the idea
of dropping a bunch of cash

on an internet deal, Shawn.

Clearly, I have my work cut out for me.

I'm gonna have to keep working the phones
day and night

until I get some guys on board.

[muttering]

Man, this is gonna be
a lot harder than I thought.

[techno music playing]

[Caveman] It's like a crackerjack prize,
right? [laughs]

[Mark] If we want this concept car
to be on par

with some of the most advanced cars
on the market,

then it needs to have
similar technological features.

-This would be the party seat.
-[Tony] There you go. [laughs]

[Mark] I want our car
to have a backup camera

and a forward-facing camera.

By placing a camera on the front,

I can now see everything,
a panoramic view, front and back.

[Caveman] Does this have "record motion,"

so you can see what that cat looked like
before you ran it over?

-[Tony laughing] Oh, dude.
-There's no instant replay.

[laughs]

[Mark] In theory, you'd be able
to look down and drive this car,

just looking at the LCD screens.

-You ready?
-[Caveman] What are we looking for?

-There's the front.
-[Caveman] Okay.

[Mark] So what we're trying to do
is give the driver

a modern virtual driving experience.

of my Rolodex of high-end buyers,

and so far, I've had no luck convincing

these guys to participate
in our virtual auction.

[Shawn] But I gotta stick with it.

All I need is to get one guy on board,

and I think the dominoes
will start falling from there.

about those concept vehicles

that I sent you
pictures and renderings of.

What we've decided to do
was still sell the vehicles,

and we're gonna do a virtual auction.

And the only difference is
it'll be online,

-all through videoconferencing.
-[Warren] Uh-huh.

Is this something you'd be interested in?

[Warren] Mm, well,
it's a little different.

Sounds a little crazy,
but I love that vehicle.

have been interested in these vehicles
from the beginning.

I've got international buyers.

high-end vehicles from us in the past...

[Dan] Well, it's a little different,

we're not gonna have a room full

The coolest part about this car
is that we get to take full ownership

of every element to this vehicle.

Everything on this car,

the windshield, the grill,

where the mirrors are gonna go
or where they don't go.

How are the doors gonna work?

What's the interior gonna look like?

Everything down to the door handle.

[Tony] It's a lot of holes you got there.

-[Mark] A lot of switches and gauges.
-[Tony] The self-destruct button.

I'm gonna label one of them ejector seat.
So I hit it, and it goes... [imitates alarm]

[Mark] It's not designed by Chevy.
It's not designed by GM.

It's not designed by Ford.

On this car,
it's built here at Gotham Garage,

inside these four walls.

It started with the concept bike
and bringing that vision to life.

But now that we've turned
all of our attention to the car,

it's very obvious to me

that these two vehicles will be
a perfect representation of this shop.

-Tomorrow, let's work on the body...
-Whoo! [laughs]

...so we can get this car
into the paint booth.

[Caveman] Right on!

[Shawn] Hey.

Are you happy with that haircut
they gave you?

-Oh, you are funny.
-[Mark] Not as funny as that haircut.

[Shawn] Now that I've wrangled up
all our bidders,

I want to sit down with Mark
and go over everything

before we auction off these vehicles.

Since the virtual auction is such
an unconventional format for everyone,

I want to make sure we're both
on the same page going into it.

-Listen, I got an update on our auction.
-Yeah.

I've got six guys right now,
that are all high-roller guys.

-Who'd you get?
-So I got Randy. You remember Randy.

-We sold him the Frankenbus.
-[Mark] Yeah.

[Shawn] Got a guy that you probably met
at the Peterson. His name's Dan.

He's actually been looking
to get a Gotham Garage car.

And then BJ,
we sold him the Corvette boat.

[Mark] I remember BJ.

[Shawn] I got Larry. Remember Larry?
We sold him the '56 pick-up.

[Mark] Mm-hmm.

[Shawn] He's on board,
and he's very serious about it.

And then we even have a guy from overseas,
a guy named Warren.

He's from Paris.
He's a race-car driver. He's legit.

And for the last guy,
you're not gonna believe who I got.

Actually, Alex.

-El Camino Alex.
-[Mark] Alex?

[Shawn] Alex, yeah.

I've stayed in touch with him.

He is very serious about this.

-I kept the door open. He's got money.
-I can't wait to see Alex again.

There you go.
So we need to talk about serious strategy

because we need to figure out

where we're gonna put the reserve
on this car.

You know, you're talking about
250 reserve.

How hard are we on that 250?

A reserve price is the minimum price
a seller is willing to take at an auction.

The guys I got lined up for the auction,
they know what to expect from us.

I told them we were gonna
start the bidding at a hundred grand,

but I let them know that
if they don't come with strong money,

they're not taking the pairing home.
They know that.

So if somebody hits
that reserve price or higher,

you are obligated to sell it to them.

But if they come in short of that,
we don't have to sell the car.

[Mark] Based off of cars like this
that have sold at auctions in the past,

market value's 250,000 for both of them.

I'm just saying this is an odd situation
with a virtual auction and everything.

-True.
-[Shawn] We gotta keep that in mind.

You say we're at 250, but I'm just saying,
what if it lands a bit less than that?

[Mark] Here's the thing about
selling vehicles like this in an auction.

The public is gonna find out
what they sold for, sooner or later.

That's gonna set a precedent
on what's fair market value

for a custom car built by Gotham Garage.

The point of this exercise
is not to make 40, 50 grand.

We could do that on other stuff.
We don't need to short sell this car.

At a normal auction,

I think we'd have a chance
at getting close to 300 grand.

So 250 is actually the lowest
I want to accept.

So if we sell this car
for less than 250 grand,

it will adversely affect our future.

We're gonna lose money down the road.

I need to know where your head's at

because we put
a lot of time and effort in this car.

We're 120 grand deep in these vehicles,

and with the crew,
and not getting paid for a while,

that's a lot.

[Mark] I've put years of creative thought
into this project,

and the value that I personally put on
the craftsmanship coming out of this shop

is very high.

So when it comes time
to make a final decision on this,

everybody's gotta remember,
I have their best interests at heart.

I'm thinking about
everyone's financial future.

Yes, the 250 reserve, I get that.
I'm just trying to set a plan up.

Look, if we get a strong offer,
obviously I'm gonna consider it.

on the concept car,

but if we want to get it ready
in time for the auction,

For me, this concept car
is a lifelong dream,

and now, there is a light
at the end of the tunnel.

[Tony] Carbon fiber inserts
are on the car.

-It's almost there. Looks really good.
-[Mark] Almost.

Even though this is a concept car,

the best modern-day comparison
would be a supercar,

like a Lamborghini or a Bugatti.

So body work on this car

has to be as smooth as marble and precise,

as if it just rolled off
the showroom floor.

[whooshing]

I've been looking forward to this moment
for almost 20 years now.

But to see it come into living color

is really dumbfounding.

[music continues]

I want you to see this car
as a flash of light in the distance,

and then it passes by you in a blur.

And then it's gone.

so we've gotta hustle

It's a sound stage

for the car and bike

and a huge white wall
where we can project the video conference.

[Caveman] That is badass. Look at that.

[Tony] I know this car
means a lot to Mark,

but at this point, it means just as much
to the rest of us as well.

Oh, that's so badass.

Typical Mark, sitting on his ass
when I'm doing all the work.

It's been all hands on deck on the car,

but one last push,
and we will have this car done

and turning into a living breathing thing...

Wow. What a difference that made.

...is an indescribable feeling.

Once you put glass on the car,
it starts looking like a car.

[Mark] For me, this project
is literally a lifetime in the making.

I grew up in the era of the Space Race,

watching all types of cartoons
and reading comic books,

and I took all that inspiration,
put it to paper,

and now it's sitting on the floor
on four wheels in front of me.

But at the end of the day,
I just want to get in,

put the key in the ignition,

and take it for a wild ride
down the highway.

[suspenseful music playing]

[Mark] We've recreated concept cars
in the past,

but we've always followed the design

of those iconic car builders
that came before us.

Those guys started with an idea,
put a pencil to paper,

and brought those ideas to life.

And just like those cars, this started...

...with a spark of imagination
inside my head.

This car has been living in my brain,

like a cartoon, ever since I was a kid.

[tires squealing]

This is gonna look so good
on the turntable.

Building these one-off concept vehicles
was a crazy idea right from the beginning.

But we're here,

and we did it.

collection of pictures and videos

of the finished car and bike,

and the response I got
is very encouraging.

Mark obviously
put his heart and soul in these vehicles.

with just a vision in his head,

and now, that vision has come to fruition.

I won't lie. I'm a little stressed.
Never been down this road.

Never held my own auction,

to the other side of this one.

and get this thing loaded.

[Shawn] Obviously,
passing on our high bid at the auction

came as a major shock to everyone,
especially the crew.

I'm still surprised.
I thought we were closing that deal.

[Shawn] But I talked to all the bidders,

and they completely understand
our situation.

[Dan on laptop] No hard feelings at all.

I sincerely wish it could've happened.

But I'm a businessman, I get it.
It's business.

How are we gonna get money rolling?

We gotta...
We gotta get some cash in here, ASAP.

Yeah. No doubt about that.

I know the crew is worried about money,

but I spoke with Mark earlier,

and it sounds like he's come up
with a way to help everybody out.

He wouldn't make a decision like that
without having a plan in mind.

[horn honks]

Oh, what's he... Mark's got something.

[Shawn] What? What the hell is this?

As much as it feels
like he's let everybody down,

there's no way in hell he's gonna leave
the crew hanging like that

without something up his sleeve.

So, I feel like I kind of
blindsided you guys at the auction.

That's not what my intent was.

I didn't do it to hurt anybody
or frustrate you guys...

but at the end of the day,
it wasn't based on my pocketbook.

It was based on what's gonna happen
down the road months and years from now,

not days and weeks from now.

[Shawn] I see where Mark's coming from.

These vehicles are like
no other vehicles we've ever done.

Like it or not, these vehicles
were an investment,

and to sell them at any other time
than at a peak market

just doesn't make any sense, you know?

If you guys are saying it's an investment,
this investment better make a big return,

that's what investments
are supposed to do.

-[Constance] Agreed.
-There you go.

[Tony] This is just where we're at now.

We're all the way in.
There's no turning back,

and we just got to find our way out.
So, is this our way out?

This is the paddle to get us up the river.

That's what this is.

[Mark] For the past few months,
these guys have given me everything.

It is now my turn to give back to my crew.

This is a 1928 Essex,

and how this is going to work is,
I'm gonna pay for this whole project

out of my pocket.

And I'm not taking my cut
out of this deal.

That's for all of you guys to split.

If we have to go into the cash reserves
and pay rent, mortgage,

groceries, whatever that's gotta happen,

then I will do that
just to get us back on track

until you can find somebody
that can buy those two vehicles

for the right amount of money.

I mean, Caveman almost fell down
just now hearing this news.

-Did you guys all hear what I heard?
-[all laugh]

[Mark] These guys are like family to me.

So when your family's struggling,

you always do whatever it takes
to make sure your family stays whole.

Let me get this straight,
your peace offering is a rusty turd?

-[all laugh]
-Yes, even Shawn.

Okay, here,
I'm gonna make it even sweeter.

So Shawn's gonna give up
his portion of the profits too.

-I love that idea! I can dig that!
-[Tony] Now, you're talking.

-You wanna keep talking?
-[Constance] I'm on board.

Now you got 'em excited!

This is where you be quiet,
or you're gonna pay for it.

-Ah, jeez.
-[all laugh]

[Mark] I know one thing about myself,
and one thing about Gotham Garage,

this is just a minor speed bump.

So why don't we get
this POS off the trailer,

-get it in the shop and figure it out?
-[Caveman] Let's go. [laughs]

We will get out
the other side of this tunnel.

-[Tony] It's kinda cool.
-[Constance] Yeah.

And it will all be worth it.

[Shawn] So, what ditch
did you pull this thing out of?

[Mark] I didn't.
I traded a pair of your boots for it.

[Shawn] Oh, please don't tell me
it was my lizard skins.
