with the motor,

so we're gonna pull over right here.

We got all kinds of water back there, but
guess what's not in the radiator anymore?

[Caveman] Oh man!

Going into this Bel Air hot tub build,
we all knew this was gonna be a challenge.

It didn't like pulling
your big ass around.

Start bailing.

When you put water in a car,
you're probably going to have problems.

It's still hot, man.
It's evaporating the water still.

What I wasn't expecting is any kind
of mechanical failure with the motor.

[engine cranking]

We're only getting paid 50 grand,
and we have to get this thing done,

'cause I got some friends that own
a boutique motel out in the desert,

and they want to feature the car
in a commercial for their motel,

which is now about three weeks away.

[Caveman] All right, let's go.

[Mark] If this motor has a problem
pulling this kind of weight,

that's going to cost us
thousands of dollars

and at least a week of time
to do a motor swap.

It doesn't look like it's sagging as much
in the back anymore.

It's not sagging as much.

[Mark] They've been planning
this shoot for months.

They've hired a film crew.
They've hired extras.

They're even shutting down
their whole motel for this to happen.

So we cannot miss this deadline.

So that did not go as well as expected.

Yeah, we had a few problems.

-[Constance] Hey.
-[Mark] What's up, Shawn?

[Shawn] Oh no.
This ain't looking too good.

Pulling all that weight,
little hard on the motor.

We had a little overheating problem.
Good thing we got radiator fluid galore.

[Shawn and Mark laugh]

[Shawn] Actually,
it's nothing to laugh about.

This ain't looking too good,
I'll tell you.

-[Mark] What are you talking about?
-[Shawn] We have a serious issue.

[Mark] We all knew this was going to take
trial and error.

It's the same thing we do to every car.

I don't mean to be defeatist,

but this is a business
where we need to make money.

We could just stop
and get rid of this project

and move on to something
that's going to make us money.

Of course we're going forward.

We're not gonna bail on this
after one test drive.

That's not what we do here.

[Shawn] Right now,
I've got high-end builds ready to go.

I know Mark's worried about
the bigger commission jobs

holding him back creatively,

but it's a little nuts to me
that we're pushing these builds aside

in favor of a hot tub car.

Really? A hot tub car?

[power tool whirring]

[engine revs]

I have a feeling
the extra weight of the water

is making it pull too hard
with that little, tiny electric fan

and old-ass six-cylinder radiator.

-[laughs]
-[Mark] So let's get this radiator out,

get it flushed,
then get the new one back in with a fan.

Shawn's concerns about this car are valid,

but at this stage in the build,
it's an overreaction.

[Tony] Until we know exactly
what's going wrong underneath the hood,

it's way too early to cut and run.

-[Constance] There you go.
-One radiator.

[Tony] There it is.

[Mark] Once we replace the old radiator
with a new and more powerful radiator,

we'll have a much better idea
of whether or not

this motor has issues,

and then we can make a more informed
assessment on how to move forward.

-You guys are doin' a fine job here.
-[horn honks]

What the hell? Is that Shawn pulling up?
What does he want?

[Caveman] I hope
he brought us lunch. [laughs]

-Yay, Ford!
-[Caveman] It's a stepside!

[Shawn] Now we're talking.

Since Mark is adamant about continuing
on this hot tub car for his friends,

we absolutely need an easy-money build

as a fallback plan.

[Caveman] What's this one?

[Shawn] I just picked this up
from our storage.

This is part of our woodie trade.

Our margins were thin to begin with
on this hot tub project,

and now that we're having issues,
my opinion is

we'll be lucky to break even
on that build.

A few weeks back, we traded the woodie

for 85 grand
and some very valuable project vehicles.

We did a super quick restoration
on the school bus

and made 17,500 in profit.

That money is what's
keeping us afloat right now.

Best case scenario,
we make 10 grand on the hot tub car,

but the cost of parts and labor
could bury us on that car.

That's why
I want to bring in the stepside.

A truck like that will have no surprises,

and it's easy for me to sell.

-Got a flip front end.
-Oh sick!

-Yeah!
-[Constance] Ooh!

[Shawn] With all the problems
we're having with that hot tub,

all the unknowns,
it's just not a sure thing.

This is a sure thing.

We do a paint job, make it look nice,

little bit of interior work,
maybe throw some wheels on it.

I say we turn this into
a custom Gotham Garage truck.

I could sell this thing
for 30 or 35 grand, easy.

-[Tony] Heck yeah.
-[Shawn] This is our bread and butter.

We build a hot rod truck and cash in.

[Tony] We're already on a tight deadline
with the hot tub car,

and now you want to throw this in the mix?

For me, it makes way more sense

to pool all of our resources
into the hot tub car.

And you wanna do all this in three weeks?

Yeah.

[Mark] That car is for my friends,

and I do not want to miss the deadline
for that commercial and let them down.

We don't have to answer to a customer.

There you go.

[Mark] But I can see that the crew wants
a bit of financial reassurance,

that's why they want to do the truck.

The only person we have to worry about
changing their mind on this is Mark.

-Yep.
-Yeah.

-You know...
-[others laugh]

He's changing his mind. Look at him.

-[Shawn] Don't look so close, Mark.
-[all laugh]

We'll get the hot tub issues figured out,
and we'll get that turned around.

But I'm good with sticking this one
in the pipe right now.

-[imitating cymbal clanging]
-[Mark] We'll have to balance both builds.

I'm going to stick on the hot tub car
and make sure that car gets done on time.

So here's the plan right now.

Tony and I are gonna take
the hot tub car to Gotham.

Caveman and Constance,
you guys can start tearing this apart.

-Then we'll worry about a game plan later.
-[Shawn whistles]

[engine starts]

-[parts clattering]
-[Caveman] What are we doing? Headers off?

Headers off.
I'll pull these carbs off too.

[Caveman] I'll start on the headers.

Do I like Ford trucks?

Yes, I do. [laughs]

This body style is definitely something

that every classic hot rod person
has their eye on,

'cause it's just so cool.

They've been making them
since the late '40s,

and no truck has sold more
in the United States.

And the '56 is definitely
one of the more preferred body styles.

If Shawn wants us to build a custom truck
and flip it for some easy money,

I mean, we can really do that
in our sleep.

Mark wants the windshield out too,
so you got a razor blade?

-We can start taking this out.
-[Caveman] I got a plan for that.

Oh, no, no, no, no.

[Caveman] Mark's not here.
I'm just gonna take this out.

-Okay.
-[Caveman] Get your PPE.

All right, you ready? Ready?

-That's always fun.

[Constance] I think that
we should just leave it right there.

I don't know, Mark,
we came back, and it was like that.

[both laugh]

[Constance] Let's order some parts
for this thing

and then head over to Gotham and help
Mark and Tony with the hot tub car.

[Caveman] All right.

[electronic music playing]

[tools whirring]

[Mark] While we wait on the parts
for the '56 truck,

I want us all to jump back
on the hot tub car

and get it roadworthy.

Tony, you want to hand me one of those?

But before we take that car
back out on the road

and see if the radiator
solved the motor problem,

I also want to change the rear suspension.

We're going to have to add
a set of air shocks

to adjust the suspension
so the rear end doesn't sag as much.

Let's put them on at the same time.

Between this change and the radiator fix,

I'm hoping
that all of our problems are solved

before we put this car back on the road.

-Definitely higher.
-[Mark] Definitely higher in the back.

We're good to go. Caveman, suit up.
We're going for a test drive.

-[claps] Got it.
-Board shorts. Not G-string.

-[laughs]
-Board shorts.

[upbeat music playing]

-Seems like it's running smoother.
-Yeah.

All right, here we go.

How is the temperature gauge?

Motor seems to be running
at the right temperature.

Suspension feels good.

All right! Yeah, the hot tub!

Phase one is complete.

We have a tub that holds water,
a car that can handle the weight,

and a motor that can pull it all.

-[Caveman] Hey, guys!
-[Constance laughs]

[Mark] The next phase is engineering.

We need to figure out a way
to make the jets in the back functional.

Suspension handles pretty good,

and the water stayed in the radiator.

And this is what he's been doing
the whole time we were gone.

-Living the life.
-[all laugh]

[Mark] All right, cool.

The commercial for the car
is in two and a half weeks,

so we really got to hustle.

-Commercial?
-[Mark] It's a commercial for...

-We get to be in a commercial?
-[Mark] No.

-I get to be in a commercial?
-[Mark] No, the car.

[others laugh]

Did you ask
if I could be in the commercial?

Nope, didn't ask.

[laughs]

I feel like, if anything,
I should be in the commercial.

-[Caveman] Yeah.
-You guys are like little kids.

-[Caveman] Yes, we are.
-[all laugh]

[Constance] To be completely honest,

it definitely makes sense
to have Caveman be in this commercial,

but I definitely think he needs
some type of babysitter,

and I have a lot of experience
shooting commercials and modeling.

It's not often that a lot
of female mechanics get to build a car

and then actually represent that car
in a photo shoot or video or commercial,

and I also just really want
to get out of the shop. [laughs]

I'm gonna end this conversation.
Let's get this car finished.

[Constance] You're totally gonna ask,
right?

[Mark] I'll ask.
Whatever they say is what they say.

But for now, time to divide and conquer.

Tony and Constance,
you meet me at the other shop,

and I'll get you lined out on the '56.

[Tony] All right.

[Mark] Caveman, drain the tub,

and then I'll meet you back over here
and keep working.

I hear we're being in a commercial.

I heard I'm gonna be in a commercial.

-[Mark] Caveman.
-Yeah!

[Mark] Get your body liquids
out of the tub. Drain it.

[Constance and Tony laugh]

[upbeat music playing]

[Mark] So here's the deal.

What we're gonna do is
remove the radiator,

everything that goes with it in the trash.

You don't want to keep this nice,
homemade job? [snickers]

No, someone's mom's missing a cookie pan.

[all laugh]

[Mark] If Shawn wants
a custom Gotham Garage truck,

then we're gonna give him
one of the slickest trucks he's ever seen.

We're going to start
by upgrading the motor.

We're gonna give it a lot
of brand-new, high-end parts,

and really make this thing scream.

We'll also add
a set of linear actuators to the hood.

So it opens and closes
at the flip of a switch.

At the back of the truck, Tony's
going to fabricate a custom tailgate,

so our logo shines through.

And we'll finish it up with some
copper coated wheels and a retro paint job

that ties it all together.

This truck is going to be badass.

There's no doubt about it.

But here's the catch.

Shawn's got to get at least
40 grand for this truck,

because that's the only way
we get the right profit

to make this project worthwhile.

After these last couple builds,
it's been a roller coaster.

For sure.

Maybe this build would be like a reset
and bring some money in.

-I feel like we all need that right now.
-Yeah.

[Tony] This Ford truck is a solid project,
but if I'm being honest,

we were under the impression
that things were going to shift

into the high-end client builds.

And they started to.

-[John] Dude, look at this thing.
-[Shawn] Huh?

-[engine starts]
-You nailed the style in the body,

but my choice would have been
to keep the interior a little bit more...

to the period.

[Tony] I know, creativity,
we were a little constrained,

but we had a little bit of stability.

Now that's gone.

We switched over
and had a good upgrade-and-trade going.

-We ended up with the woodie.
-[engine revs]

-[laughs]
-[Tony] That was a big payday.

We brought cars in.

We must have scored
some sort of good deal today.

And even though the hot tub car

and the truck will bring in
some okay money,

normally we have the next something
waiting to come in,

and we always trust Mark and Shawn
to take us down the right path.

But right now,
we're at this fork in the road,

and I think we're all
just a little concerned

about the direction of the shop right now.

-You want to fire this thing up?
-Hell yeah.

[engine starts]

[sputtering]

-[turns off engine]
-Does it fire?

Yeah, it's pretty awesome.

-[Tony] We did it.
-Whoo!

[Mark] You ready to get some bubbles
in this car?

-Let's do that.
-[Mark] You see how the trunk is open?

[Caveman] Yeah, I'm wondering
why I'm seeing hoses.

[Mark] This is called
side turbo mount 101.

How do you like that?

[blowing loudly]

[laughing]

[Mark] On any other hot tub car,

they use a generic pump
to make the bubbles.

We're going to do something
completely outside the box.

I want to install a set of twin turbos.

Know why we're going to do two?

-Because it's better than one? [laughs]
-It's always better.

Oh, how awesome.

Turbos on the car
are normally used on the engine.

What a turbocharger does is,
it takes the power of the exhaust,

spins a fan, sucks in fresh air,

forces it into the motor to give you
a lot of horsepower.

We're going to use
that same basic principle for the hot tub,

but instead of forcing the fresh air
into the motor,

we're going to force it
into the jets to create the bubbles.

A turbo powered hot tub.

[Mark] Don't worry, we're not gonna be
blowing dirty exhaust into the hot tub.

The turbos only push in fresh air
to make the bubbles.

We got to do a little test fire.
Watch that turbine. Make sure it's moving.

We're not gonna drive it again?

Nope, not gonna drive it again. You ready?

[Caveman] Yeah, go ahead.

-Oh yeah.
-[Mark] Movin'?

They're spinning.
That's gonna make bubbles in a hot tub.

[laughs]

[Mark] Let's send this off to bodywork,

and then when it comes back,
I gotta paint it,

and then we got to finish it
in time for the video shoot.

[Caveman] Cool. That's badass.

[Mark] I've been a creative person
my entire life

for as far back as I can remember,

and I don't want to change.

I hold on to my creativity
because it's our thumbprint.

We do stuff that nobody else does.

That's what separates Gotham Garage apart

from the rest of the car builders
in the world.

But I do know that that mentality
has been very frustrating

for everyone at the shop lately.

So now I've got to figure out

how to make the money that's coming in
with these higher-end clients,

fit the creativity
without giving up the creativity,

so it works for Gotham Garage and it works
for these new high-end clients.

In my opinion,
if we want to get to that place,

we're going to have to swing
for the fence, no baby steps.

We're going to have to take
a giant leap of faith.

I've been designing and sketching
an all-original car

for the past 15 to 20 years.

It's basically a concept car,

and I'm at the point where I have
the entire build mapped out in my head.

To me, building a one-off
never-before-seen car

could give us the best of both worlds.

One, it lets us be creative.

Two, it gives us something
to show these high-end clients

to entice them to buy this type of car
and to trust our creativity.

We got to see where
we're going to land on the '56 truck

and the hot tub car.

But the more I think about it,
the more I realize this car

could be the solution to our problems.

It might be time to take this crazy
vision of mine and make it a reality.

[upbeat music playing]

[Tony] All right,

Good, good. Is Erica there with you?

[Rebecca] She is.

-Hey, I wanted to give you guys an update.
-[Rebecca] Okay. Sounds good.

Well, I don't know how to say this,
but, you know,

the build isn't done yet,

and it's becoming
a little more expensive than expected.

-You know what I mean?
-[Rebecca sighs] Yeah.

[Shawn]
This is exactly what I was afraid of

from the beginning of this build.

These are Mark's friends, and he promised
to build them a one-of-a-kind car.

But now that we get close to the end,

the hard truth is that
this build is going to cost

more than the 50 grand
that Mark promised Erica and Rebecca.

This is such a tricky build.

There's been so much trial and error,

and the time and labor alone
is costing this car to go over budget.

[Rebecca] Mm.

[Shawn] I know Mark doesn't want
to upsell his friends,

and, quite honestly,
I don't feel great about it either,

but this is my job.

I have to look out
for the finances of the shop.

[Rebecca] We certainly don't want to put
any of the guys at the shop out.

It's just we really only budgeted
for the 50 grand.

I'm hoping Erica and Rebecca
can come up with a solution.

Otherwise, we may end up
taking a loss on this project.

We're not trying to gouge you
or anything like that.

You know, we know the value is through
the commercial you guys are doing,

but, at the end of the day,
we're just trying to break even on this,

you know what I mean?

[Rebecca] Why don't we do this?
Why don't we head out to the shop,

let's see how the car's turned out,
and we can, you know, we'll make it work.

[Erica] We'll figure out something good
that makes everybody happy,

and it'll work out great.

[Mark] I'm gonna paint this truck
a vintage color

that you just don't see anymore:

root beer brown.

It is going to accent
all of the copper trim

and the red leather interior.

It's not a color that you see every day,

and it's definitely not a color you see
on a truck like this.

[upbeat music playing]

[Tony] The hot tub car still has
a couple days left at the body shop.

So we're all gonna dive into this truck
and get it to the finish line.

That's going to be amazing.

To give this truck one more custom piece,

I'm going to turn the old tailgate
into our brake lights and turn signals.

The lights are going to get mounted
into the tailgate,

and we're gonna build the Gotham Garage
logo right over the top of it.

-It's going to be fancy.
-[in British accent] English tea fancy.

That's the kind of fancy
I'm talking about.

[Tony] Between the tailgate and the other
custom accessories that we're adding,

this should definitely be the truck
that Shawn's buyer is looking for.

[Mark] You done admiring your handiwork?

-They wonder why I have gray hair.
-[others laugh]

[Mark] I'd never admit it to Shawn...

but I'm pretty stoked
that we built this '56 Ford truck.

Seeing it get done, seeing it finished...

-...it's a really badass looking truck.

-[Mark] What do you think of that color?
-[Shawn] Good.

I think James is going to like
the custom touches.

I think we did a few more than a few.

I asked Mark and the crew
to build a custom Gotham truck,

and they absolutely delivered.

I initially talked to our buyer, James,
about a price of around 35 grand,

but with all the craftsmanship
and the detail that the crew put in,

this a 40-grand truck all day.

-Hey, Shawn.
-There he is. James.

So I'm hoping James is willing
to open up his wallet

and pay a little bit extra.

-Mark. Nice to meet you.

And this is the '56 Ford stepside.

[James] What'd you do here
with the exhaust?

[Mark] It actually is welded
to the running board.

How do you like that color?
I went with copper and root beer brown.

[James] I like it.

Kinda did all the little extra
Gotham Garage touches.

Yeah.

-[Mark] Full custom interior.
-[James] Wow.

[Mark] Gauge set, steering wheel.

-Put a brand-new wood bed kit in it.
-[James] Nice.

[Mark] We also did
a pretty cool custom tailgate.

-[James] Oh, nice.

[James] Yeah.

[Mark] So on the inside,
right above the steering wheel,

there's a switch panel.

This is how you get to the best part
of the truck, in my opinion.

-Oh, there you go. Wow.
-[hood whirring]

[Mark] Which now exposes
your giant 410 engine.

-Damn.
-That enough motor for you, James?

-Yeah, I like those headers.
-[laughs]

Everything we could chrome,

-there's chrome.
-Yeah, I appreciate that.

[Mark] James seems a little reserved,

but he's kind of warming up really quick
to the idea of he's getting a hot rod.

[engine starts]

-How's that, James?
-That's nice.

-[Shawn] Yeah?
-I like it loud.

The only question here is,
is he 40-grand into it, or is he not?

Yeah. You leave that to me.

Here's the thing,

-I know we talked 35...
-Yeah. Yeah, yeah.

...but Mark and the crew
went overboard as usual.

[James] Right.

And right now,
the truck stands at 45 grand.

Mm!

How's that sitting with you?

That's a little high. I wasn't expecting...

There's a lot of custom touches on this,
just exactly what you ordered.

-[James] Right.

The truck looks great. Drives great.
I like it. I just... I can't go that high.

-[Mark] I can live with that.

when I'm right. It doesn't happen often.

But when it does, it sure feels damn good.

that we only have a few days left

to finish that hot tub car
to get it ready for the video shoot.

is back from the body shop,

it's time to put a slick paint
job on it and finish that car.

So now it's all on me
to absolutely shatter their expectations.

Obviously the rest of the interior
has got to go in.

-The hot tub needs one more coat.

[Mark] We need to get the trim on it,

-I can't remember all this.

I know that the phrase "outside the box"
is kind of cliché,

but we color outside the lines on purpose

so that we can put
our minds together, solve it,

and build the craziest thing
you've ever seen.

And with this hot tub car,
I think we've succeeded.

[Caveman] How's them turbos coming, turbo?

[Mark] Mine's already done.
I don't know what's taking Tony so long.

[laughs]

[Tony] Did you hear back from the girls?

[Mark] I talked to them
about putting Constance in the video.

They're good with that.

And, Caveman,

they do have a special part
for you to play.

-You're gonna do great.

-[Tony] Now we got a hot tub car.

We had a starting budget of 50 grand,

and like we talked about on the phone,
this was going to be a different build.

how tough a build this was.

We ended up putting in
a lot of extra stuff.

The twin turbos, the disc brakes,

the stiffening of the suspension
and everything to handle all this.

So, you know we went through an awful lot.

So where we came in at the budget

is 60 grand for this.

That's just where we're at in this.

You know, at 60 grand,
we're barely breaking even.

We were definitely planning on
driving out with this thing today.

We just don't have 60.

and come up with something.
So, what are you thinking?

and it all works.

with the '56 truck and the hot tub car,

on my vision of our next big project.

So there's been a lot of uncertainty
around here

about how we're going to move forward
with this whole new client build.

I want to put Gotham Garage on the map
with their own concept prototype car.

I've already got the designs
and the sketches to do this,

start to finish, everything done here.

You know what that's gonna take

This is gonna be a huge build.
You're talking about an all-original car.

The crew's been waiting on Mark
to give us clear direction

on how the shop should move forward.

But I don't think anybody expected it
to be this ambitious

or this much of a risk.

Big car companies spend years
developing these kinds of cars.

They put their best design teams,
their best engineering teams,

and their best creative minds
behind developing these cars.

And even then
there's no guarantee of success.

Yes, the best concept cars could be worth
a ton of money when they're complete,

but they can also be total flops.

This will all come down to what someone's
willing to pay for Mark's vision.

Look, I want to make sure
you thought this through

and that you're a 100 percent sure
that you want to go forward with this.

Look, I know it's a big swing,
but I am not going to let this plan fail.

Okay, the big thing is the money
that it's going to take to build this.

This is going to be expensive, obviously.

Yes, but I believe that
a big investment up front

is going to lead us to a massive payday.

I figure we can build this
and then we can take it to an auction,

make a ton of money.

I love the idea, but we got to figure out

how we're going to come up
with ample amount of money

to best show what we're capable of.
