has built one of the most powerful

gold mining dynasties in the Yukon.

a crisis gives the Beets' kids

for his claims on Indian River,

Tony needs his kids to find a way to save the season.

First up, youngest son, Mike.

Didn't really truly learn how to be a gold miner

until I got out to Paradise Hill.

I'm pretty sure I can get a decent amount of gold out of this hillside here.

Better go pitch the plan.

[narrator] Mike's plan, return to Paradise Hill

and try to hit its elusive White Channel pay layer

that's previously netted the Beets family millions in gold.

-[Tony speaking] -[Mike] Hey, Dad.

[Tony speaking]

[Mike] I got a lot of pacing in the [bleep] hillside that I can get to.

-[Tony speaking] -[Mike] Mmm.

Yeah, but I'm offering you a way to get gold right off the bat here.

Get moving, 'cause I'm not stopping.

[narrator] Mike cut his teeth mining for gold on Paradise Hill,

I've been doing it since I was a wee little twerp.

[Tony speaking]

[Mike over radio] I don't care who's the best.

I care who gets the job done right.

[narrator] When it comes to mining, Mike's a natural.

Lots of ripping, lots of dirt moving.

[narrator] And it's all he's ever wanted to do.

[Mike] The way I see it, when I have kids,

they could be taking over after me.

And just like in the future,

I might be taking over from my dad.

[narrator] To prove to Tony he has what it takes,

Mike needs to resurrect the 30-year-old trommel

that has sat idle for years.

[narrator] Mike's plan to rescue the season

is up and running and already delivering gold.

[Tony speaking]

[narrator] A mile downhill on Hunker Creek,

Mike's sister, Monica,

has her own plan to save the family business.

we still had our water license here.

You've been thinking about this spot for 30 years.

[narrator] Monica is the youngest of the Beets kids.

[Monica] Tony, as a father,

when we were, like, small children, awesome.

He'd come in and run amok.

[Monica] I found growing up with the older brothers,

I've been able to hold my own more,

because I've had to stick up for myself.

We're too alike, very stubborn.

We always think we're right.

[narrator] Monica has become a highly skilled equipment operator

and gold recovery expert.

I've been doing this since I was three.

This job was never a choice thing.

All I need to be happy is to move dirt.

[narrator] She's proved herself to be a levelheaded voice of reason

who's graduated to running plants.

[Monica] It's nice to be actually making money with my cut, with my plant.

[narrator] Kevin meets Tony on ground

next to Mike's new cut on Paradise Hill.

[Kevin] Well, seeing as we're not doing the Indian River this year,

why don't we set up a little operation over here?

[Tony speaking]

-[Kevin] Mike's got his operation over there. -[Tony speaking]

And he's gonna be working this way, right?

So, why don't I stick an operation over here,

and go that way?

And we can meet in the middle.

[Tony speaking]

[narrator] Eldest son, Kevin, is a college graduate.

[Kevin] Mining has paid for my university expenses,

and that's something a lot of folks can't say.

[narrator] The Beets' chief mechanic.

[Kevin] Besides Tony,

there isn't anyone on the claim

with as much experience as me.

Watch your ears.

[narrator] And the family's quick thinking problem solver.

When I say I wanna fix this now,

[Kevin] What we should do instead of fixing this old [bleep],

Off the shelf, then we know they work.

[narrator] But working for his father hasn't always been easy.

And we are still sending.

all three Beets kids push forward at Paradise Hill.

The Kiwi plant is plugging along.

It's really nice to see all of us bringing gold in.

Kevin is running a mountain of stockpiled pay.

And the Beets are coming out all guns blazing.

with Monica taking a step back to parent Jasmine...

on Kevin and Mike to step up.

Then I, I feel like he-- we can expand even further, do more.

[narrator] Ten days later, Mike's stripping crew hit pay in record time.

So, I assumed it wouldn't move.

Mike has a chance to make up for his mistake.

[narrator] Tony tasks him with delivering a wash plant to a nearby neighbor.

[narrator] In the Klondike, Tony Beets' son Mike...

[narrator] ...has just dropped the $300,000 Kiwi plant

off the back of his lowboy.

[narrator] It's Mike's second mistake of the season...

So, this year, Tony talked a lot about stepping back,

giving me and Mike more responsibility.

But it's hard for him.

He's just so used to being in charge.

He just can't keep his fingers out the pie.

[narrator] Tony has tasked Kevin with looking after

his entire fleet of rock trucks...

[Kevin] Where the [bleep] is tractor number four?

[man] Truck number four is broken and overheating.

Thomas is running it.

People don't listen. And they're not that bright.

It looks like I'm stuck doing a cylinder swap.

This is the last bolt, and then she's done.

There's one thing after another.

I've got 14 other things on the go, and that's just counting rock trucks.

Never mind excavators and dozers, plants.

[narrator] Tony is also relying on Kevin

to keep his aging trommel turning.

[Kevin] Oh, [bleep] That is [bleep] ridiculous,

the way it's piling up on there.

I mean, we don't want our pay under the conveyor belt.

We want it in the trommel,

so the gold ends up in the sluice box.

[narrator] Beneath the hopper,

a rubber and metal skirt

channels pay onto the five-foot wide conveyor,

but it's damaged and spilling gold-rich dirt,

which is building up beneath the belt.

Kevin needs to remove the skirt

and build a replacement from scratch

to get back on the gold.

[Kevin] We're shutting down.

[Kevin] This skirt, it needs to be [bleep] done.

[Kevin] Tony likes to be in charge. He likes to micromanage.

to get their only working washplant up and running.

hold the running ring in position,

allowing the trommel to rotate in a perfect circle.

Without them,

the plant's dead in the water,

and their season is over.

[Kevin] We don't have near enough [bleep] people

who can weld our air arc,

to do all this before end of season.

[Kevin] Well, that's the next year project.

This is why I keep...

trying to get Tony to have stuff ready on site.

It does put a lot of extra pressure on me

when we're just waiting on parts

'cause, you know,

half of the time, it ain't [bleep] to fix it,

it's having the [bleep] to fix it.

and the Beets family

are a man down.

Kevin has decided to take time off from the family business.

[Mike] I don't know why my brother decided not to come here this year.

It's a shame when you lose someone,

but everyone's expendable.

There's two types of brothers.

Types of brothers that are, like, connected at the hip,

you know, bestest buds,

and there's the kind of brothers who fight all the time.

They're either one or the other.

We were the other.

My brother has a hard time listening to other people.

If he were to come work here,

he'd be thinking he'd be in charge.

My mom is also very pragmatic.

She doesn't understand why he's not coming back,

is 'cause of the money. Very good.

[Monica] You know, my parents had us running equipments

since we were 12, 13 years old.

So, Kevin taking this time off

to figure that out for himself,

I think is absolutely amazing.

[narrator] Without his chief mechanic,

Tony is now behind in his race to fix the trommel

that broke down at the end of last season.

[narrator] Tony spends three months welding the trommel,

and over halfway through the season,

it's still in pieces,

and has delivered no gold.

that normally, Kevin would oversee.

[narrator] Despite Tony and Mike's desperate fix,

the trommel is still no closer to running.

assuming nothing goes sideways.

It's very frustrating with Tony.

I don't think he quite realized

There was a lot of frustration, I think, from both ends.

So hopefully, we can make something work this time

and be a bit more cheerful.

[narrator] When Kevin left, he got an opportunity

no one in the family has been offered before.

Tony proposed leasing him ground on Scribner Creek,

but Kevin declined.

[Kevin] We've been thinking about Tony's offer.

The biggest thing is gonna be nailing down what he's committing to.

helping Tony to get two remaining wash plants running

with the final push.

the Beets weigh their final gold for the season.
